Alex Acosta “Resigns,” Trump Immediately Fills Position With Someone Equally Bad or Worse

Politics • Views: 26,844

This morning Labor Secretary and Jeffrey Epstein deal-maker Alex Acosta “resigned,” and of course he and Donald Trump blamed it on the press, who have been committing the grave sin of reporting on Acosta’s very shady deal with Epstein.

Trump immediately consulted his list of the most rotten people in America, and pulled out the perfect successor to Acosta — Patrick Pizzella, who worked with corrupt lobbyist Jack Abramoff to enable a brutal sweatshop economy in the US territory of the Mariana Islands.

At a July Senate confirmation hearing, Pizzella said he didn’t remember much about the work he did in the late 1990s to help the Northern Mariana Islands—a US commonwealth 1,500 miles from Japan—defeat a bipartisan effort to rein in a guest worker program that the Labor Department found relied on indentured workers. When Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) asked Pizzella whether he knew about reports of forced abortions and routine beatings at the time, Pizzella replied, “I was not aware of any such thing.” Pressed further, he said reports of abuse by multiple government agencies and newspapers were mere “allegations.”

What Pizzella didn’t say was that he helped lead a public relations campaign to rebrand the islands as a paragon of free-market principles. Between 1996 and 2000, emails and billing records reviewed by Mother Jones show that Pizzella and colleagues organized all-expenses-paid trips to the islands for more than 100 members of Congress, their staffers, and conservative thought leaders. When they got back, Pizzella helped them convince colleagues that the Northern Mariana Islands were, as his old boss Abramoff liked to put it, a “laboratory of liberty.”

Just another day in the Trump era, filled with corruption, cronyism and crime.

How many “Acting” Secretaries does this make now? And that’s with the GOP controlling the Senate and rubberstamping any semi-human troglodyte Trump nominates.

Even with a rubber stamp from the senate, the nominees would still have to be grilled by Democrats and have potentially unsavory things come to light. That’s what “Acting” avoids.

There’s that, but I think beyond that, Trump doesn’t want to feel that ANYONE has any power to limit or contest his actions and choices. The more “Acting” Secretaries he gets away with, the more “Advise and Consent” becomes irrelevant.

Right now Sec Def, DHS, Labor, and SBA. Throw in Mulvaney doing double duty.

But there’s a crap ton of other positions that are empty/filled with acting persons. That includes Secret Service, CBP, etc.

Brookings (at the link) notes that they only indicate a position once - so if there are multiple nominations, confirmations, and then resignations/firings, it counts only once. Therefore, something like Press Secretary is captured only once. Still, they capture serial departures too: 33% of these “a” team departures are for serial positions.

Every state has enrollees in the 9/11 victims compensation fund. Every state.

Texas: 1-500 (these are given as a range by the CDC).
Kentucky: 50-99
South Carolina: 500-999
Arizona: 100-499
Maryland: 100-499

These fuckers love to have first responders as backdrops at their photo ops, but heaven forbid that those first responders need health care and coverage for 9/11 related ailments, and they can’t be bothered to help them.

Yea, but the Trump admin just stopped counting bees so it’s OK.

The US Department of Agriculture has suspended data collection for its annual Honey Bee Colonies report, citing cost cuts — a move that robs researchers and the honeybee industry of a critical tool for understanding honeybee population declines, and comes as the USDA is curtailing other research programs.

Still getting preferential treatment. Why identify assets under seal so the public can’t see what his assets are? Concerned he’d be revealed to be a con artist who lived beyond his means? Or that he’s got far more assets? Ultimately, he should be denied bail no matter what.

On this particular issue, I can understand it. IF (big IF) he really does invest for people, it is possible that they are unaware of what has been ongoing forever. And I think it is unfair for some innocent rich person (which hypothetically is possible) to get smeared in with this asshole.

Oh it was anticipated. From the Wiki on Heinlein’s 1940 (rev 1953) work “If This Goes On”:

The story is set in a future theocratic American society, ruled by the latest in a series of fundamentalist Christian “Prophets”. The First Prophet was Nehemiah Scudder, a backwoods preacher turned President (elected in 2012), then dictator (no elections were held in 2016 or later).

en.wikipedia.org

ETA:

The afterword describes three stories which describe the beginning of the theocracy and subsequent beginnings of rebellion against it. “The Sound of His Wings” would have concerned a televangelist named Nehemiah Scudder who rides a populist, racist wave of support to the Presidency. “Eclipse” describes the subsequent collapse of American society with particular emphasis on the withdrawal from space travel by the new regime.

Our dictator simply was supported by televangelists rather than being one himself.

Scratch Les Wexner and I think you have the original source of Epstein’s wealth:

per Forbes, “Leslie Wexner, billionaire founder of The Limited clothing chain, was widely believed to be his benefactor for years and the major source of his wealth.”

Also—in the book “Filthy Rich,” the fact that Les, through the Limited and Victoria’s Secret had access to young women “models” was mentioned. And the creepy story about how it was Epstein who handled getting Les and Abigail to sign their pre-nups, taking a “model” to Les’s office and having his sign it on her stomach totally weirded me out.

Oh, another thing in the book—they (Epstein’s pals and lawyers) tried to discredit one of the accusers by saying she was trying to extort half of Les’s wealth—several billion dollars. It was kinda sketchy about what she supposedly had on Les (or if it even really happened at all) but it was an interesting side thread to the whole story.

My guess would be, like voting against appropriating funds for fixing the water problem in Flint, he doesn’t believe that it should be the purview of the federal government. Instead, he probably believes it should be handled by state/local governments.

One of the problems with the right side of the libertarian spectrum is an insistence of following arcane rules in the face of changed circumstances and societal norms/expectations. In this case, failing to (or rather refusing to) recognize that for a variety of reasons, the federal government now plays a role as a backstop in emergency situations.

That, of course, has been the plan all along.

Indeed. Though the timetable seems to have accelerated in recent years as the demographic reality of America’s future begins to dawn upon them. A party that enjoyed a relatively stable base for much of the latter half of the 20th century now finds that said base is contracting as the older members die off and the younger members dwindle.

The “Tea Party” seems to have been the biggest accelerant, the embrasure of the party’s radical wing driving out those it was grooming to be the next generation of leaders in favor of a very vocal and totally uncontrollable wing of fanatics. That wing’s hold of vital votes killed most of the party’s biggest efforts since 2011 to do much more than “trigger the libs!” Hence the blowing through of former norms, whether it be “reconciliation” or “blue slips,” to try to put something in place that will last longer than the next election cycle. Don’t be surprised if we get to 2021 under a Dem president and find ourselves hearing about how repealing the Trump Tax Cuts will be a “massive” tax increase upon the American people.

Speaking as the proud husband of an Oklahoma woman, I find this headline entirely unsurprising.

re: #81 KGxvi

Knowing Trump, he just means the couple of years where everything got fucked up from excessive deregulation. Because if he does have one skill in life, it’s “not being the guy left holding the bag.”

It’s a skill which, if most what I’ve read about him is any indication, he came about through years of repeated failures. And it’s a skill that can only get you so far, as the reports of most major banks refusing to lend to him any longer show. Yeah, it’s kept him afloat, but only because he’s sacrificed so much of the boat that he’s left clinging to a piece of driftwood. Really, the only thing that continues to save his ass is the fact that apparently nobody outside his organization has direct access to his finances.

Bold of you to assume he has any idea what job creation numbers were during Obama’s administration… or that he wouldn’t just declare it fake news.

Hey, all the job and economy figures from the Obama Administration were all fake! But the numbers complied under Trump, from the same sources, using the same methodology, and probably the same career Gov’t employees - THOSE are real.

Unless they look bad, in which case Many People Are Saying they’re fake. Indeed, a big, tough guy, with tears in his eyes, said to him, “Sir, sir! These numbers are fake!”

Donny measures so much of his presidency against what Obama accomplished, I don’t doubt for a sec that he spends at least a little time with every new jobs/UE report asking if the numbers finally put him above Obama’s. A guy whose ego is so fragile that he has to inflate his wealth to get a high spot on a meaningless list of “richest people” is going to look for every little way he’s “better” to flout.

Ayep, every indication is that Donny has been reliant not only on the money of others, but their cleaning up his messes, in order to avoid total bankruptcy. Because every time he’s left to his own devices, whether it’s by battering down the resistance of others or simply firing them in favor of yes-men who will do his bidding for a paycheck, the best he can ever hope for is to break even.

Don’t touch the man’s snake

They say he wanders alone,
from badlands to bars.
And commits heinous acts,
under cover of stars.

He’s got a graying goatee,
A silver patch on one eye.
If you look at him wrong,
kiss your future goodbye.

He wears a black leather jacket,
and some thick, rugged boots.
Four guns strapped on him.
He’s a merciless brute.

He’ll end your livelihood,
He’ll break every bone.
If you should happen upon him,
just leave him alone.

Run as fast

Or feel the wrath

Yes I was being snide. When it comes to sex crimes the police do a shitty job of being fair with witnesses not to mention processing rape kits. The entire criminal system sucks and barely tries to be better because men have a baseless fear of being falsely accused. If men were the victims it would change in a hurry.

If he makes such a speech, aren’t the networks obligated to give equal time to the Democrats? Is it possible that he discontinued the practice in order to eliminate an avenue for the opposition to speak to the nation? That said, I never listened to those statements anyway.

If Greenwald thinks that Bolsonaro is going to back off, or that the hate that the fascists are whipping up towards the press is not going to ever touch him or his husband…

… he really doesn’t understand how things go from this point on.

At recent nationwide demonstrations, backers of Bolsonaro and Moro repeatedly denounced Greenwald — often by focusing on his sexuality and his husband, leftist Brazilian congressman David Miranda. Bolsonaro himself has famously said that he would rather have a dead son than a gay son.

“GlennGreenwald, get out of Brazil! You are disgusting,” read one sign. An online campaign with the hashtag #DeportGlennGreenwald was popular on Brazilian Twitter.

Pro-Bolsonaro members of Brazil’s congress have called for Greenwald’s imprisonment and deportation.

Executed for being gay. Preview of things to come in Brazil.

At this juncture, deportation is really going to be a best-case scenario for Greenwald.

“in the hysterical mode of the day”—fuck Bill Fucking Barr. Though some might say I’ve just proved his point, I would add, fuck that fucking traitor.

*SPIT*

If I were a totally soulless GOP bastard, I could see Trump, Pence, and the CBP thinking this is a PR winner: imprison people in these camps worse than cattle, create the right conditions for squalor and disease in them, then turn around and blame the poor bastards in the cages for “bringing in” their own conditions.

Bill Barr, 7/11: “Some in the media have been suggesting—in the hysterical mode of the day—that the administration has been planning to add the citizenship question by executive fiat w/o regard for contrary court orders…This has been based on rank speculation and nothing more.”

— Natasha Bertrand (@NatashaBertrand) July 12, 2019

Which means that Barr is lying his ass off.

My congessman (Andy Biggs) is another one of those dicks.

I’m literally 3 miles outside the district of Dick #3, Ken Buck. I’d like to think that this makes him less electable in CO-4 next year, but if he was able to scrape by for re-election even in ‘18, I don’t really see a way that it does.

This is everything you need to know about Mike Pence’s complete lack of integrity. He sees the squalor of a detention facility run by the administration in which he serves … and he blames Democrats

It’s the “look what you made me do to you!” defense that’s a perennial favorite of abusers everywhere.

In 2010 I had just finished my PhD but was struggling to make ends meet. So I signed up to be a census worker in Indiana. One of my tasks was to help ferret out homeless camps. One of my fellow workers drove about 2 hours from his home with his kids in his truck because this was necessary income. We set out at midnight. We got to a couple of camps, but no one was there. Maybe they heard us coming. We weren’t told to go back. Then I was switched to retirement homes. It was a real struggle to do census work with memory-impaired elderly. Finally, I had a couple of days when I was sent into the the deep hollers of southern Indiana. Lots of dogs. Not fun.

The tweeter says

But it is simpler than that. The only and complete thing you need to know about Mike Pence being a piece of shit with no integrity is this: he’s a Republican.

Gotta hand it to them, they have the old “turd blossom” skills of one Karl Rove. Take a horrific situation you created and when the heat builds turn it around as proof of crisis.

Colorado’s 4th district consists of mostly rednecks who want to secede from Colorado. Like Colorado’s 5th, it’s pretty much a lost cause for Democrats.
