Trump condemns “Send Her Back” chants, which means we can be sure that when they happen at his next rally, all he’ll be able to do is whine that he has no control over his supporters.

This CNN event on right now drawing the names for the debates in two weeks is a perfect example of how the political process has been perverted for the purpose of attracting TV viewers.

Every time you find yourself thinking that CNN is really crusading for truth in the age of Trump, keep in mind that network president Jeff Zucker decided 4 years ago right now that putting Trump on the air 24/7 was a great way for him to sell advertising.

Also, Jake Tapper is a fucking hack.

The Mayan and Aztecs were more serious about their sport:

The Aztecs continued this proud tradition of loser‐lose‐all, as many vases and sculptures depict the inevitable decapitation of the losing team. There are even some depictions of ball players playing with the heads of the losers in place of a ball. Whether this actually occurred is up to artistic speculation. The Spanish who observed the game reported horrendous injuries to those who played it — deep bruising requiring lancing, broken bones, and even death when a player was hit in the head or by an unprotected bit by the heavy ball.

The DNC should adopt Mesoamerican debate rules.

In Ameristan in the near future, vaccines will be illegal, and all the diseases conquered in the 20th century will rage through the nation and kill or cripple a lot of kids. But FREEEDUMB!!1!!1!1

Fortunately, there are a lot of Mexican-born children in El Paso so Mexico’s stringent vaccination program will help with herd immunity. The Mexican public health services don’t mess around. They don’t accept religious objections and they wouldn’t consider woo-woo bullshit a religion even if they did. This article from 2002 describes what it is like:
Mexico bests U.S. in vaccinations

MONTERREY, Mexico — If parents here are late getting their child inoculated, a public health nurse will come to their home, pull down the youngster’s pants and give the vaccination right there in the living room.

If mom and dad are away at work, the nurse does not wait for them to come home and give permission. The shots are given anyway, and the paperwork is left with the baby sitter.

In Monterrey, like Houston an industrial city of more than a million with large pockets of underclass, the government divides its poor neighborhoods into sections of about four square blocks each, then puts a nurse in charge of supervising parents in each area to ensure all of the children are vaccinated on time.

So tonight I watched the latest episode of the latest hot cooked-up-drama show, Spin The Wheel.

My belief about the show has not changed. It is based around the idea of “luck”, of course, but to pick every episode’s guest hero the producers have gone out to find just that - everyman heroes.

Not that everyman heroes are a bad thing, in real life.

But the show is built around some sort of premise that trying your chances at gambling is a reward for doing something good.

Which I find to be downright odd, if people accept that blindly as a good thing.

If you want to reward someone, just give them the reward.

What’s this making them play a super-sized roulette wheel?

Especially since there is a chance, a non-trivial chance, that the player goes home empty handed. (no spoilers, but it’s a real possibility.)

Recidivism in societies:

Far-right protests ‘attracting biggest numbers since 1930s’ in UK amid Brexit anger, report warns

Far-right protests are attracting the largest number of supporters since the 1930s as Brexit fuels anger against the “elite”, a report has warned.

Research for the Commission for Countering Extremism, seen exclusively by The Independent, said tens of thousands of people have descended on London since the start of 2018 over Tommy Robinson’s imprisonment and delays to Britain’s departure from the EU.

Some “Free Tommy” protests spilled over into violent attacks on police officers, while “Brexit betrayal” marches saw demonstrators carry nooses and drag effigies of politicians through the streets.

Trump’s flagrant over-spending, leading to record deficits, enabled by Republicans in Congress, are all part of the populist deconstruction of society.

When the rich do not care for society but only their own pocket, we are in a state where social angst can rise quickly.

As dimwitted as many Trumpers are, their angst is still angst. It may be manipulated by Trump (and Murdoch and the rest), but the angst rises out of a feeling of displacement in society.

There isn’t an easy way out of this. The only way to handle a total debt that grows to be equivalent to a GDP is to do austerity measures, which will bring about more angst.

Societies are built by cooperation. When those in power see that their benefit is built upon the destruction of other, then the whole shebang is in trouble.

Actually there are a lot of ways to handle the debt without austerity. Soak the rich, print more money, or just keep borrowing more. Japans national debt is several times larger than its annual GDP, and its not a real problem. Now this doesn’t mean I think its cool to borrow trillions to give it to billionaires; we ought to be investing that money in our kids, our workforce and our infrastructure.

The “rich” don’t really have enough money to cover the debt.

Printing money is just austerity by another name. Hyperinflation leads to the inability to buy goods and services, just like physically limiting those goods and services.

We here often focus on Trump’s moral depravity and the duplicity of his followers.

But there is another facet to Trump which is just as bad: his ignorance and his disdain for knowledge.

Trump and his ignorant followers believe false things. They do not accept physical reality or the necessary impact of physical reality on things like economics.

It’s not just flagship issues like climate-change of which Trump denies. He denies what is known in economics, he denies what is known in engineering, he denies what is known about how to run a society.

The rich don’t have to pay off the debt, just pay the interest. You are assuming there would be hyperinflation. There are massive deflationary pressures that didn’t exist the last time inflation was a problem 40 years ago. The ever plunging cost of computing power, the lack of bargaining leverage the deunionized workforce has, the removal of price controls on airlines, energy and other economic sectors, and the opening of the formerly communist and third world to economic development, most of which produced little anyone wanted to buy 40 years ago. This was an important point AOC made when questioning Powell; there is virtually no inflationary pressure in the economy.

If printing money to pay the debt is the way taken, then that will be hyperinflationary because so much now is indexed.

Deflation is of course real, and what you describe is a possible worst case scenario - deflation due to mass job losses.

Such an event though will be bigger than the Great Recession of 2008.

In my life, in watching my own expenditures, I can see significant price increases the past 24 months.

I have long records of my various expenditures, some going back to 2000. I can see what has happened.

I can track, for instance, how Cox keeps upping my rates (for just internet.) Sure, they increase bandwidth, a little bit, but bandwidth that is mostly wasted. Tier pricing is set by strategy where one really does see a difference at any price that is less than the standard tier.

We also see gasoline prices, which deflated due to the recession combined with increased efficiency in the US, combined with less miles driven. But now Trump has given up with increasing automobile mileage, for example, which undermines the idea that Americans can keep on driving without being unduly affected by world petroleum dramas.

And so on.

I don’t expect Biden or Sanders to drop out before the money runs dry, with the only question right now being of whether they make it to Iowa before that happens. There are a lot of the bigger donors who are still uncommitted, waiting until there’s a clear front-runner before they open their wallets. Joe and Bernie are no doubt betting that if they can eek out a 1st or 2nd place win in Iowa and/or New Hampshire, then they’ll jump back to the top of the board and thus win the support of those donors.

Fascinating article at Mother Jones
I had never really been aware of day-care being targeted by social conservatives. It makes sense, though, a lot of sense.

Why Are Right-Wing Conspiracies so Obsessed With Pedophilia?

The story is the same, from the day-care panics to QAnon: It’s not really about the kids. It’s about fears of a changing social order.

…….

The patriarchal family was under siege, as conservatives saw it, and day-care centers had become the physical representation of the social forces bedeviling them. “You had this Reagan-driven conservative resurgence,” Beck says, “and day care was seen as at least suspicious, if not an actively maligned force of feminism.”

The general context is the same: conservative retrenchment after a period of progressive social gains.
Day care held a prominent place in right-wing demonology. As far back as the 1960s, conservatives were warning darkly that child care “was a communist plot to destroy the traditional family,” as sociologist Jill Quadagno writes in The Color of Welfare. In 1971, President Richard Nixon vetoed the Comprehensive Child Development Act, which would’ve established a national day-care system. In his veto message, Nixon used the Red-baiting language urged upon him by his special assistant, Pat Buchanan, saying the program would’ve committed “the vast moral authority of the national government to the side of communal approaches to child-rearing against the family-centered approach.” In a decade of rising divorce rates, at least conspiracism and reactionary social conservatism could enjoy a happy marriage. By the time Judy Johnson came forward in 1983 with allegations that a teacher at the McMartin preschool had molested her child, the country had been primed to assume the worst by more than a decade of child-care fearmongering.

Nader’s campaign had this too. I’m all for a higher minimum wage but people like Bernie can’t walk the talk. And this has been consistently an issue for him.

SCOOP: For years, Bernie Sanders has traveled the country advocating for a $15 per hour minimum wage. His campaign organizers say they aren’t making that much, and they’re using his words to protest for higher wages.

I would note that there is a distinction between an ongoing for-profit business and a political campaign.

Not that I am a Bernie supporter to any extent. Just to note that there are nuances here that are being overlooked.

I see lots of references to “Black Mirror” but I am unfamiliar with it.

Black Mirror is a British science fiction anthology television series created by Charlie Brooker, with Brooker and Annabel Jones serving as the programme showrunners. It examines modern society, particularly with regard to the unanticipated consequences of new technologies. Episodes are standalone, usually set in an alternative present or the near future, often with a dark and satirical tone, though some are more experimental and lighter.

Black Mirror was inspired by older anthology series like The Twilight Zone, which were able to deal with controversial, contemporary topics without fear of censorship. Brooker developed Black Mirror to highlight topics related to humanity’s relationship to technology, creating stories that feature “the way we live now - and the way we might be living in 10 minutes’ time if we’re clumsy.”

The “San Junipero” episode I reference is probably one of the finest episodes they’ve ever done. A mini-masterpiece.

Just as a wife who would to try to change an abusive husband is seen as disloyal, an American citizen wanting to change America (by “making it great again”, for example) is not just seen as disloyal, but subject to deportation.

We are really seeing a throwback to an outdated view of politics and society which we need to counter before it becomes institutionalized

What we’re seeing is an explosion of cultural atavism, a longing for a lost past, in which Christian, middle-class whites were at the very apex of the social pyramid - now, these same people see their socio-cultural position threatened and they’re lashing out in fear.

Not necessarily fear they’ll be displaced, but rather, that they’ll have to share some room at the apex of the pyramid. It’s an anti-egalitarian reaction, whether they’re aware of it or not.

I unfortunately expect that to have less impact here in Pennsylvania than expected. Despite the state’s history of ethnic diversity, especially in the western part with the various groups immigrating to work in the coal mines and steel mills, there are a lot of very conservative Catholic congregations that are racist in their core and/or are going to be single issue voters and pin the entire abortion issue on the Democratic candidate. (The last based on experience with two friends/co-workers who I am pretty sure voted Trump in 2016 justified solely by that stated reason. I have yet to ascertain whether their views regarding Trump as a candidate have changed since then.)

Yea, my plan on engagement if the issue arises the next time I see some of these people is pointing that the nativist rhetoric is the same as a hundred years ago when the KKK was active in the western PA region and doing cross burnings to intimidate the immigrant (and Catholic) miners. I don’t hear any outright anti-atheist sentiments from them since they know I am agnostic/atheist in outlook. And, if anything, I can challenge them regarding the administration’s behavior on the border and elsewhere not being very charitable or Christian in nature - which chafes some of them in being reminded about from folk such as myself.

The suspect at the center of Japan’s worst mass killing in almost 20 years told police that his work was plagiarized and that he used gasoline to torch the renowned Kyoto Animation studio, killing 33 people.

Police identified the suspect as 41-year-old Shinji Aoba during a press conference on Friday and said he has unspecified mental health issues.
Kyoto Fushimi Police spokesperson Ryoji Nishiyama said they were not yet aware of a link between the suspect and the studio in Kyoto’s Fushimi-ku district.

The suspected arson attack on Thursday has left anime fans world-over grieving the loss of life and a studio, which claimed to put its employees first and was a major force in the industry.

And dividing people by their fears is exactly how conservatism works to maintain itself. That way the people who benefit from conservatism (the wealthy and corporations, who are the “pastors” of the religion), can deflect anger and hatred of the masses (the “parishioners”) on an external demon which is trying to destroy their faith.

That demon is usually progress which benefits everyone.

I am curious to here more about the building’s condition. Initially saw mention that one of the fire escapes was blocked by the fire and the other inoperable/blocked and that was where most of the bodies were found. Was the latter blocked by the attacker, or was already blocked or unusable due to something else? And if the latter, I presume that was some sort of serious safety code violation.

I’m remembering my first semester of American history at community college. My professor was a guy around my Dad’s age. A southerner(contrasting with myself since I honestly don’t see myself as a Southerner, I don’t necessarily see myself as a Northerner either) but he seemed pretty liberal minded. Anyhow, one historical event he talked about as important was Bacon’s Rebellion. I’m not sure how famous it is nationally but it was something I had learned about in the 4th grade(Virginia in the fourth grade in the mid 90’s at least taught Virginia history that year). But Professor Reed’s point was that Bacon’s Rebellion was important because it began the scapegoating and later use of violence on a group in the so called frustrated majority. I was really happy when he wrote a reference for me when I transferred to GMU.

I don’t see the large mass of cousins that often.* And at the meetings I don’t recall much, if any, political discussion. I know one of my cousins home-schooled her children, but not the particular underlying reasons for doing so. And they are fairly scattered nowadays, though there is still a good number of them around Johnstown still, including one who owns my former grandparent’s house in Portage.

* - My branch of the family is the smallest (youngest of 5). And as the youngest of 3 all my 1st cousins on my paternal side but one are older than me. And about the only time there are gatherings I am invited to are funerals at this point. I keep in some touch via Facebook with a couple of them and that’s it. My two oldest aunts generated fairly large clans due to having four and ten children respectively.

My maternal side connections are nil since my mother was the only child who survived past 15 and thus any cousins on that side are at least 2nd and I have not been in touch with any of them in decades.

The frustrating thing is they just say “Well mine came legally.” They don’t know that. All the research I’ve done and I still haven’t found the immigration records of all my family. They’re threatened by changing demographics. I think what bothered them the most about Obama’s election and it will bother them doubly so if Kamala is elected is that a black person can be their boss now. I’ve never felt threatened by such a thing since I have had PoC as authority figures in my life whether that was school or work. But equally important, I’ve had them as peers too. I don’t claim to be colorblind. I’m aware of our differences but my belief is that what should make this country unique is we were never supposed to be an ethno-state. What we actually have practiced I concede is unfortunately a different reality.

I’m in the suburbs of Atlanta, so it’s not just the Southern Baptists that are conservative here, but I don’t know how you form coalitions with different churches on this, since I have no idea who the more liberal congregations actually are. That’s where an effort should be made though, getting these various groups together to draw in more attention to what the GOP really thinks of America and Americans. My father’s father worked in the Labor Department. When my oldest aunt got married, her husband and my grandfather would sometimes argue politics. I don’t know how heated it got but my grandfather was the liberal and my aunt’s ex was the conservative. Both were educated guys. I think all five of my Dad’s brothers and sisters were in someway struck by how their parents treated people. My grandparents marriage itself was inter-class- my grandfather growing up more affluent and interestingly enough in a Republican household and my Nana growing up with a widower father but I’m not sure about his politics, Dad’s cousin told me he remembers him cursing Truman but a lot of people hated Truman left and right. Either way, my Dad’s parents from what I saw treated people fairly regardless of race or class background and I guess that helped make their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren liberal both politically and in life.

re: #226 A Mom Anon

I’m trying to think what other denominations would be allies for the Catholics in this situation and I have no idea. I’m not at all a church going human. My take is believe what you want and leave me the hell out of it,lol. I also don’t want your religion in charge of community or society. For people who claim to love this place, they hate damned near everyone who lives here. It needs to be pointed out relentlessly.

It really depends where you are. I’m not church going either but it would be better off if churches were more diverse. I think part of why Catholics even more conservative ones tend to be more welcoming than Evangelicals towards newcomers is because Catholic communities are more diverse. African-American Evangelicals tend to be welcoming because of their own experiences though. A reminder though that the Southern Baptists exist in the first place due to a split over slavery. I believe they have since apologized for that but like the concept of original sin, it’s always going to be there, that their denomination owes its history to a split on slavery. You don’t read about Northern Baptists much but the few I’ve read about have been more open minded. The funny thing is in colonial days, the South was less Evangelical than the North but now it’s the other way around.

Catholics, including Latino Catholics, are certainly socially conservative, but their sense of “family values” is a bit different that what modern Conservatism tries to sell us: they want strong communities, good schools and effective government institutions to promote and protect them.

Modern conservative “family values” just means banning gay marriage and abortion, privatizing schools and cutting taxes and government to a bare-bones minimum.

If my parents argued politics they apparently did it away from their children. My father was the conservative from what I could tell with my mother being the liberal. Both college educated (engineer, librarian), came from working class families (truck driver for coal company, steel mill worker), and prized education and choice for their children. Religion was not a major factor in our upbringing. Both our parents were raised Catholic, but my father was non-practicing and my mother attended a UU congregation and was pretty much a secular humanist. I attended “Sunday school” at the UU church at a young age, but that was pretty much more of a child care thing than an indoctrination.

My sister attended a UU congregation as well while my brother and I are pretty much non-religious. He terms it being “a-religious”.

If asked I refer to myself as a “hopeful atheist” and explain that as “I hope there is not a overseeing and interceding capable deity since I dislike the concept of being a lab rat. If said deity is not overseeing and interceding than it doesn’t make much of a difference.” If asked about moral behavior I generally respond that moral and cooperative behavior is to the benefit of society as a whole and that all altruism does not flow from religion.

Well in that sense, I’m socially conservative too I guess. But you’re right. That’s where there is a huge disconnect between conservative white Christians and conservative Hispanic and Black ones. I have some small letter c- conservative values too. I think family should be valued but the difference between me and the Fundies is I think that family can be headed by a single parent, two same sex parents, and still work just as well as with a mom and dad. And I also think we have the freedom not to have children if we want to either. The problem is small letter c- conservative values have been equated as being the same as capital C-conservative values. Jimmy Carter is the embodiment of the former and Trump definitely doesn’t live a small letter c-conservative lifestyle but they love the latter and hate the former. I could honestly deal with the Fundies if they were just honest that they are as pick and choosie as they accuse liberal Christians as being.

Hate is learned. Yes, obviously humans have weaknesses that are exploitable, which means we can surely have evil tendencies, but we are not born to hate. If you watch young children together, you just don’t see hate. Disagreements yes, over toys and things and attention, but not outright hate.

What makes what’s happening now so insidious is we have created cultural norms that reward being an asshole. Just look at what ends up on TV and passes for “entertainment” on major networks during prime time. The reality shows like big brother, the bachelor and ette, hook up island crap and so on are just bad parodies of high school cliquery and being awful for the win. Bullies and liars get paid, being nice and having integrity? Not so much. And don’t get me started on throwing gender into what’s considered strong vs. weak in our culture. That doesn’t help what’s happening either.

Even if we do get the gears fixed and boot out the fascists, we have a serious cultural reckoning we’re going to have to face, so we can stop making the same dumb mistakes over and over.

I really thought voting for Obama would be the beginning of something special. Maybe it was my naivete as Obama was the first person I ever voted for President, I was 21 that year. I really thought electing a son of a Kenyan immigrant would really help us move forward because not only did I feel Obama had better ideas than McCain, I really liked and still do like him immensely as a person. His entire family too. Michelle is one of my favorite FLOTUSes ever and teh girls seem like they’re cool too. And then the attacks on them including from Trump. What frustrates me is how my neighbors and extended family cannot see that bigotry doesn’t have to be wearing a Klan hood or NAzi armband. Bigotry can be much more abstract. I don’t know what we’re going to but this can’t go on. The right needs to stop with the culture wars and accept modernity.

I think we all thought that electing Obama, twice even, would have created more equality and begin shifting toward more fairness and opportunities for everyone. What we really didn’t count on was a rise to power of people with literally no moral compass. This has been going on, the most recent version at least, since the 60s. After the Civil Rights Act and party shifts resulting from that, there was an organized effort by the GOP to stop progress of any kind. It’s not been given the serious attention it should have been. I think Democrats believed that taking the high road and not sinking to their level would work. Meanwhile the GOP was taking over state and local government with an eye on implementing everything they could that would destroy work labeled “liberal” or “commie”. That worked it’s way to DC and we’re paying for it now. We have lots of catching up to do and we have got to get it through our heads that THE WORK IS NEVER DONE. We can never get too comfortable when democracy is at stake. And it will always be at stake. Always.

I also had this silly notion that even Conservatives could point at Obama and show him as proof of the conservative American Dream that anyone, regardless of race or background, could rise to the highest office in the land if they worked hard enough.

But that would have involved acknowledging his achievements, even if they did so only grudgingly.

That was too much for them. Instead, they insisted he was some kind of Manchurian Candidate Affirmative Action coddled poster child who bought the election by offering Tons of Free Stuff to unemployed parasites who did not deserve to vote.

Your family is way bigger than mine.

Everyone on my father’s side of the family is gone except my sister.

I have one son my ex-wife turned against me when he was a small child because of religion.

On my mother’s side, she is alive and her brother is gone. My uncle had five children, all of whom are nominally in liberal protestant denominations who disowned both my sister and me (except for my eldest cousin). My aunt remarried and had one more child (nominally my first cousin but she won’t have anything to do with me either).

The infamous grocery store incident which I understand was misconstrued but HW didn’t hide his patrician background in how he dealt with politics. I think the accent is legitimate. Looks like a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on, at least in the Athens, Greece area:

A strong earthquake has been felt in the Greek capital of Athens, causing people to run out into the streets.

The tremor measured 5.1 on the Richter scale, according to the Athens Institute of Geodynamics, but the US Geological Survey gave it a preliminary magnitude of 5.3.

The quake was “strong but fortunately not very long”, according to one witness quoted by the European Earthquake Monitor.

There was no immediate word on injuries or damage.

It was not mentioned in my mandatory Michigan history class. /s

That said, I went to Wikipedia, that font of all human ken [citation needed]. As it turns out, neither Gov. Berkeley nor Nathanial Bacon were decent people. Bacon appears to have rebelled because he was left out of Bekeley’s patronage, and wanted to lead attacks on Native Americans. The argument was Natives were raiding frontier settlements.

While he was busy with his army in the colonial capital, his own area was raided by said-same natives because he’d taken all it’s defenders to overthrow the government.

That’s actually walking their church’s walk. I’m impressed. (No, I’m not going to CCD any time soon, but damn, I hope the GOP gets a giant exodus of Catholics from their party over that.)

I deal with hard core Catholic forced birthers on the phone every day who scream about the “baby-killer Democrats”. Even when they find out their kids have been molested by priests they still stay in the cult. They won’t leave and they still continue to purge out of their cult the faction that believes in” liberation theology”.

Yeah the Governor seems to have been awful too.

Maryland had a similar revolt some years later, in which a disaffected Anglican priest became a Puritan. He saw Maryland’s majority-Catholic government as an offence to his religious sensibilities (and he also couldn’t get patronage from the government), so he raised an army of Protestant citizens in Maryland. They successfully overthrew the colonial government.

He later participated in two more rebellions, both of which failed. He was then charged by the Puritan government of Maryland with “blasphemy against the Christian faith,” for which he was sentenced to a fine of £20 and to be bored through the tongue with a red-hot iron (he was pardoned by the new governor for his past service in the Protestant rebellion in the colony).

After that, he tried to get reëected to the Maryland Assembly, but the majority Puritan government kept him out due to his past as an Anglican priest.

My ex-wife dabbled in Nichiren Buddhism for a while. I could never really get into it in any way, but I appreciated their view that all life and all things are interconnected, and I liked the way the church was structured, run by lay people, and not hierarchical.

My ex girlfriend was into the Soka Gakkai cult. Ikeda this Ikeda that. She was a wonderful companion to be with but when she tried to get me to chant it just got to the point that we had to split up. And when I tried to get her to see what a crook Ikeda was she reacted just like any other cult member. Tried to get a rabbi from Chabad to chat with her but it did not work out.

Trump condemns “Send Her Back” chants, which means we can be sure that when they happen at his next rally, all he’ll be able to do is whine that he has no control over his supporters.

Stochastic terrorism.

Trump is a stochastic terrorist. His words have consequences. They enrage and enable his racist white supremacist base to act, as they have already done in Pittsburgh at the Tree of Life shul, and in Charlottesville, where Trump equated goddamned Nazis with the people protesting goddamned Nazis.

He will use this again, and then he’ll join in with the chants. He did this all through 2015/2016, and he’ll be back at it again.

It’s his thing. It’s always been his thing. He’s a racist for decades and the policies he’s enacting are a white supremacist’s wet dream. He wants to stop nonwhite immigration (and is considering shuttering the office overseeing refugee entry to US). He demonizes nonwhite immigrants and migrants. He attacks POC who aren’t waving his MAGA flag.

It’s going to get a lot worse. And we’ve got a media that still doesn’t comprehend the damage Trump does with his lies even as they regurgitate it without context. They’re stenographers and hagiographers aiding Trump and his propagandists at Fox.

There are few willing to debunk Trump in real time, and to dig into Trumpworld, and we need more like them. Every media outlet needs them, but that requires time, money, and the media outlets are more concerned with profits than investigative journalism.

I fear for our civilization when our media outlets when they peddle conspiracy theories and elevate them to speak as equals with those who deal with facts.

For instance:

Trump’s virulent racism is treated as magic balance fairy bulkshit or ignored as though the media has collective amnesia about what Trump did last week, last month, or last time he ran in 2015/2016. Trump has now and has always been a racist and bigot. Nothing has changed. He uses the same tactics, and knows that the media wont bother holding him accountable. And the handful of GOPers who are speaking out on this aren’t blameless either.

Trump knows the GOP wont either. They’re cowards who fear the dragon of white supremacy they’ve spent decades cultivating. This didn’t happen overnight. It took decades of blaming nonwhites for the problems angry white guys have as opportunities and jobs pass them by. It’s easier to blame the black guy for the white guy’s problem than to tackle chronic under-education, lack of job opportunities, retraining, and reorienting the economy to address worker needs in light of increased automation.

It’s easier to claim MAGA than to do anything to actually make it great - unless you think making it great means stopping nonwhites from coming here to take your jobs.

Do these angry white guys think that nonwhite doctors are taking their jobs? That nonwhite migrant farm workers are taking their jobs?

These are the jobs that these angry white guys aren’t doing - because they don’t have the skills or the will to do them. Yeah. They wont go out in the fields to pick crops. They think it’s beneath them or that they can’t handle more than a few days in the fields before their bodies revolt against all the repetitive motion, the pain of lifting heavy crates, and the inability to go to the bathroom in sanitary conditions.

The “rich” don’t really have enough money to cover the debt.

Printing money is just austerity by another name. Hyperinflation leads to the inability to buy goods and services, just like physically limiting those goods and services.

Oddly enough, the rich DO have enough money to cover the debt.

The total net worth of all Americans, combined, is over $60 Trillion. More than half of that is owned by the wealthiest 1%. That would be enough to cover the entire debt, and the next two years federal budget.

(USA TODAY) Iran denied Friday it lost a drone in the Strait of Hormuz after the United States said it had “destroyed” an Iranian drone that was threatening a U.S. ship.

“We have not lost any drone in the Strait of Hormuz nor anywhere else. I am worried that USS Boxer has shot down their own UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) by mistake!,” Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Twitter.

Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted military spokesman Gen. Abolfazl Shekari as saying that “all Iranian drones that are in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, including the one which the U.S. president mentioned, after carrying out scheduled identification and control missions, have returned to their bases.”

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic waterway for the seaborne transportation of about a fifth of the world’s global crude oil exports.

President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the drone was threatening a U.S. ship and was “immediately destroyed.” He said the drone came within 1,000 yards and ignored “multiple calls to stand down.

I know the claim is dubious given the source but it would be so on brand for this fucked up, corrupt administration to shoot down one of our own drones then try to blame it on Iran as a pretense for a war.

The frustrating thing is they just say “Well mine came legally.” They don’t know that.

I do know that my mom’s grandparents came here legally.

Of course, that was at a time when the only immigration law in the whole country, the only limitation on who was a legal immigrant, was the Chinese Exclusion Act. Which presumably also forbid Japanese, Korean, Thai, etc.

In any case, the great-grands were Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe, not the least little bit Asian. Therefore, entirely legal.

(Dad’s parents, it’s a little fuzzier. They came in the 1920’s, I’m not sure of the exact year so I don’t know if they had visas, if it was before or after the 1924 law started the country-of-origin quotas… the stories they told me were contradictory, I haven’t done the research to find out which are true).

And in more fucked up Trump news via POLITICO:

The Trump administration is considering a virtual shutdown of refugee admissions next year — cutting the number to nearly zero — according to three people familiar with the plan.

During a key meeting of security officials on refugee admissions last week, a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services representative who is closely aligned with White House immigration adviser Stephen Miller suggested setting a cap at zero, the people said. Homeland Security Department officials at the meeting later floated making the level anywhere from 3,000 to 10,000, according to one of the people.

The proposal for a near-shutdown of the refugee program is alarming officials at the Department of Defense, who don’t want to see a halt in admissions of Iraqis who risked their lives assisting U.S. forces in that country. The possible move comes after the Trump administration cut refugee admissions by a third this year, to 30,000.

If the administration shuts down refugee admissions, it would give President Donald Trump a powerful talking point as he makes immigration restrictions a centerpiece of his reelection campaign.

These people are pure fucking evil man…and Miller is about the worst of the bunch.

Let’s see. I have my Dad’s paternal grandfather’s record. He came with his parents in 1882. I have all four of my mom’s grandparents who arrived between 1905-1921. Great Grandma was Great Grandpa’s second wife so she came much later and just missed teh 1924 quotas by a few years. I also have one of Dad’s great grandmothers who came from Scotland with her widowed mom and siblings in 1871 but the others notta. I think the earliest ones arrived in the early years of teh French Revolution. I’m not sure what specifically motivated them.

Shutting down refugee admissions. I can think of nothing more anti-American than that. Although my family weren’t officially refugees and I don’t think that existed in the early 1850’s. They may well as been. They were fleeing a terrible Famine in Conneacht. They were forced to pay taxes to the Anglican church. Not even fifty years before, their parents and grandparents lived under the Penal Laws. I get legitimately angry when I see my fellow Americans who have an idea what their ancestors went through embrace the same bullshit that would have kept their families out.

That should be the kickoff.

We should get specific questions as to how Barr acted to shut down investigations. Who contacted SDNY and told them to stop investigating Trumpworld despite clear evidence of criminal wrongdoing (Hicks perjured herself is just the tip of that iceberg).

But even if Mueller just reads from his own report, it should be enough to get more Democrats on board. We know the GOP has ignored the report - they’ve said as much. They haven’t bothered to read it, as though burying their head in the sand will make the obstruction and criminal misconduct disappear.

Hah!! I just got access to Amazon Prime (not my account ;-)) and am planning on binge-watching over the next couple weeks.

Handmaid’s Tale is carried by Hulu. is it available at Amazon?

And most flat earthers would answer that question “no.” (See all the flat earth videos on YouTube discussing why gravity is a hoax.)

I know the claim is dubious given the source but it would be so on brand for this fucked up, corrupt administration to shoot down one of our own drones then try to blame it on Iran as a pretense for a war.

That would be the legitimate military definition of a false flag attack, not the conspiratorial nonsense you hear around events like 9/11.

Welcome to the new reality. Everyone wants a piece of the streaming pie and shows keep bouncing around. You try to save money by ditching Cable and subscribing to Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime. But by the end of the year you’ll need to have Hulu, Netflix, Prime, HBO Max, Disney Plus, whatever NBC calls their new service, plus CBS All Access if you want to watch Star Trek episodes or other CBS exclusives.

And ultimately you’ll end up paying exactly the same amount you used to pay for Cable for all the different things you want to watch.

So many conservatives rail against single-parent homes.

More than once during my life I’ve asked someone who interjected that “why do you hate war widows like my mother?”

After my father was killed, pressure was on from people in my village in Michigan for her to re-marry (it was scandalous for her to remain a single mother). She was bashed for going to college on her VA benefits instead of finding a nice man. People within our family also weighed in she was causing a family scandal.

I hear ya. Both my Mom and Dad had grandfathers who were single parents for a little while. Dad’s grandfather remained a widower for the rest of his life. Thankfully, Great Nana’s widowed aunt whose sons were all grown up helped raise my Nana and her sisters. Mom’s grandfather did remarry to my Great Grandmother but still he was raising four kids on a coal miner’s salary and time. There shouldn’t be any pressure to marry. I think it helps t o have two people but your mom shouldn’t have rushed into a potentially loveless marriage because of societal and family pressure. Social conservatives just cant wrap their heads around that there are different kinds of families. My one cousin and his husband are raising two girls. They just got back form Barcelona. I don’t know them well but the girls do well in school and my cousin is a successful guy. I’ve seen plenty of “traditional” family units have their problems.

The Prohibition one IMO was fascinating. Really liked Vietnam too. TBH I’m surprised Burns hasn’t touched on WWI yet directly because I find that an infinitely fascinating subject matter. I really enjoyed the Vietnam one since he considered all perspectives- former US military, war protesters, Vietnamese civilians north and south, former military north and south, NVA, etc. I really enjoyed watching it with my Dad who was coming of age in that era. My mom is a bit younger so Vietnam isn’t as ingrained in her mind like it is his since he had some friends that went.

I had a client request we install DirecTV because the DirecTV NOW app on Apple TV is too confusing. I had to get them to realize that media distribution is changing and they need to use the DirecTV NOW app as their ‘satellite receiver’ and don’t install all the separate apps for each channel on their Apple TV.

They forgot and went off the reservation. They still need channel numbers and to be able to hit one button and see ‘TV’ playing and hit Channel Up and Down.

At the very top of their main page:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows that 50% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Trump’s job performance. Forty-eight percent (48%) disapprove.

a little musing about “send them back”

texas:
- lots of latinos
- some recent immigrants - say last 10-20 years
- some migrants - ie moved from other states
- some legal, certainly some not
- others can trace their ancestry back a long way
(though just as with religion and sexual orientation, you can’t tell by looking who’s who)

- put aside the whole notion that we have the right to petition the government to redress grievances. we have a right to express our disapproval and protest.

- would trump hold a rally in texas and tell them if they dont like it to ‘go back’?
- would someone go up to a random texan and tell them to “go back where they came from”? (sure, yes i know people do)

why do i bring this up?
- it’s the line from above - “others can trace their ancestry back a long way”
- i left out the other part
- they were on that land when it was Mexico
- and when texas declared its independence
- and when texas became a state
- some of them have *always* been on that land

- long before trump and his clan/ancestors were even born, let alone came here to declare America theirs and in their image alone

where would they ‘go back’ to?
it’s idiotic
as idiotic as saying it to someone born in the bronx

this is all obvious to anyone with two brain cells to rub together

I wanted to bust what I think is a myth, the idea that people aren’t born hating, they have to learn it. A big component of hate is fear, and when it comes to people it’s the fear that they are going to do something to you. Now, what people might not be born with is straight up hate, but I can tell you having three children that some are born more fearful than others. And one of the ways to cope with the fear of others is to stay with people you know.

I’m not saying that these people haven’t learned to turn their fear into raging hatred, but a very common response to fear is to lash out. Other animals do it (there’s a reason if you leave a litter of cats, dogs, or gerbils to adopt, the ones left over are the fearful ones).

So, while I believe that most people are good, there are things inherent to people that we shouldn’t gloss over. They sometimes have to be taught to do the right thing.

While we’re talking about Catholics:

Catholics in Iowa went to church. Steve Bannon tracked their phones

(tl;dr—Phone companies sold geolocator histories to a RW Catholic GOTV effort, identifying frequent church visitors.)

Someone my wife saw said it looked scarrier than It.

Heh. My wife and I watched the It trailer last night right after watching the Cats trailer, to change the mood - because we’re both big softies and got all choked up watching the Cats trailer. We thought it was beautiful and funny and heartfelt, certainly influenced in part by both of us having lovely childhood memories about the musical.
The It trailer looked great too. My wife thinks it should be called That. The hall of mirrors scene with McAvoy is terrifying. And it looks like Finn Wolfhard grows up and becomes Bill Hader, and still wears the same glasses. All of which is totally believable.

The GOP used it as a hostage tactic against Obama. Who the fuck is Trump kidding? I doubt Trump even knows what the debt ceiling is or why it’s in plan this soon?

It’s the Trump tax scam, that’s why. Trump’s giveaway to the 1% meant that revenues crashed because he gave a trillion dollar tax cut to those who didn’t need it. That meant that the debt this year broke $1 trillion for the first time during a period that isn’t a world war or recession. It’s because Trump broke the government.

Unfortunately, refusing to raise the debt ceiling will fuck us all. The Democrats will have to vote to raise, even if they don’t t want to.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s Revolutionary Guard releases video it claims proves U.S. warship didn’t destroy Iranian drone near Persian Gulf. .

from CNN this AM

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump said Thursday that the USS Boxer downed an Iranian drone that came within 1,000 yards of the Navy ship and ignored “multiple calls to stand down” — marking yet another escalation in the already tense situation playing out between Washington and Tehran.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said the drone was “threatening the safety of the ship and the ship’s crew” in the Strait of Hormuz and was “immediately destroyed.”
The drone was destroyed using electronic jamming, according to a US defense official.

raises some interesting questions
- they didnt ‘destroy’ it - if they did do this, what they did was jammed its comm and it crashed.
- i assume they dont mean the drone ignored multiple calls to stand down - they were talking to….somebody? somewhere?

a little musing about “send them back”

texas:

why do i bring this up?
- it’s the line from above - “others can trace their ancestry back a long way”
- i left out the other part
- they were on that land when it was Mexico
- and when texas declared its independence
- and when texas became a state
- some of them have *always* been on that land

Eva Longoria’s family has been in San Antonio since before the Mayflower set sail (first immigrant ancestor was 1603. One of her ancestors got a 4000-acre land grant from the King of Spain in 1767 (before Mexico was its own country). When the Mexican-American war ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848), the borders moved and the Longoria family went from living in Mexico to living in the independent country of Texas, then a few years later they were suddenly living in the United States, then the Confederate States, then the United States again, without moving an inch.

The greatest trick the racists ever pulled was convincing the world racists didn’t exist.

I disagree. The greatest trick they pulled off was convincing the world that the ones calling out their racism were the real racists.

I’ve always rooted for the Persian and Iranian people. I grew up with Persians in my neighbor and have had many Persian friends and colleagues over the years. Terrific people, fun loving, and hard working. And, not to generalize, but Persian women are absolutely stunning.

re: #403 Belafon

“You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught” - SOUTH PACIFIC (1958)

So, while I believe that most people are good, there are things inherent to people that we shouldn’t gloss over. They sometimes have to be taught to do the right thing.

To put it succinctly, for many families in the southwest, the border jumped them. And yet they’re the ones accused of being invaders and outsiders.

I like the snark on it. Because yeah they bitch about all those things and none of us think they should leave if they whine about it. But they seriously think critics of their leaders and ideology should leave if they don’t like policy.
