A man suspected of torching an animation studio and killing 33 people in Japan’s worst mass killing in two decades carried out the attack because he believed his novel had been plagiarised, according to reports yesterday.

Nineteen of the 33 who died were found on a staircase leading up to the roof from the third floor, bodies piled on top of each other, Kyodo said. Firefighters arriving soon after the blaze began found the door to the roof was shut but could be opened from the outside, Kyodo said.

The victims may have rushed up the stairs to escape the flames and found themselves unable to open the door, it added.

It’s horrible.

When I lived in Japan I often dreaded going into some older buildings. I think the fire codes just are not as strong as here in California. I remember going into buildings where the elevator could only hold a few people, they were so small. And the stairwells could only fit a single file.

There have been infamous fires in the major cities which one would think would have forced Japan to have stricter codes, and I’m sure new buildings today are better. But even buildings a few decades old can be really iffy. Egress just isn’t given enough room for panic exits.

It takes a certain type of sociopath who decides to kill all of his co-workers because he believes that management has stolen an idea of his.

It’s not that different from any mass shooter in the US. They feel that innocents should pay for their perceived damage.

The difference is that the sociopaths in the US have ready access to guns.

Just heard from a friend up in that storm area in Wisconsin. Tornado went right over their farm, “ripped apart the treeline” and brought down a lot of fence. Located all horses in the dark and patched the fence well enough for tonight. Glad she and the critters are ok.

I had my own fun here. Heat Index was 110, and the house kept slowly getting warmer. I thought I was getting sick, but the central air had quit. I called my “adopted” son (who was cooling off at home in the middle of a long week running sound and lights at a county fair UGGGGGGH), and he came down, diagnosed the problem, called a brother, and the two of them replaced a part and I am cooling down. That was all the fun I could handle for the day.

The two times I’ve been in Japan, I’ve gone to old buildings with very steep stairs. One was at Kawai Kanjiro’s House (really, that’s what it’s called and it’s a museum). It’s an old Kyoto machiya or townhouse, in a row of townhouses tucked away on a tiny street. The stairs to the second floor were very steep and did not have a railing. I thought I might have to bump down on my butt, however, I was able to descend with my dignity intact.

Tall apartment buildings have external stairways; I’m surprised this building didn’t.

ETA: In this machiya, the wood had been allowed to age gracefully, but I suspect the whole place is a fire trap.

re: #5 Ace-o-aces

Just for the record, A$AP Rocky is being treated just like any other detainee in Sweden, no worse and no better. TMZ and other media outlets have been running stories which A$AP Rocky himself and his defense team have been denying are true.

Both the prosecution and defense are vowing not to yield to political pressure and resent that the issue is being politicized. Also, should A$AP Rocky be exonerated, he has the legal right to compensation for the time he was in detention, which incidentally means that his compensation for the time in detention alone will most likely be one of the largest in Swedish legal history. And if it emerges the other parties have filed false complaints, A$AP Rocky could have right to damages from them as well.

However, the politicization can call the size of that compensation into question even if exonerated, and make conviction of the other parties (alleged to have started the altercation) difficult. This could still end in A$AP Rocky’s and his crews part in the incident to be deemed self-defence, or excessive self-defence, but at a level the prosecution might choose not to pursue.

Also, libel laws in Sweden are stricter than in the US, and you can easily rack up significant damages and jail time if you talk shit about someone.

Some good news:

Three members of the white supremacist group Rise Above Movement received prison sentences of more than two years each on Friday for crimes stemming from the 2017 Unite the Right rally.

Benjamin Drake Daley, Thomas Gillen and Michael Paul Miselis were among four RAM members indicted in October on one count each of conspiracy to violate the federal riots act and one count each of traveling from California to Charlottesville with the intent to “incite a riot, organize, promote, encourage, participate in, and carry on in a riot, to commit an act of violence in furtherance of a riot, or aid or abet any person inciting and participating in or carrying on in a riot.”

After a U.S. district judge in Virginia ruled that the three could be prosecuted under the riot statute and that it did not violate their First Amendment rights, the three accepted plea agreements last spring. However, in California federal courts, a similar case against other RAM defendants was thrown out because the judge there said the riot statute was overbroad. The Virginia defendants will still be able to appeal their convictions on constitutional grounds, and have 14 days to do so.

A fourth RAM member indicted at the same time — Cole Evan White — accepted a plea agreement in November and is currently out on bond.

I regret that I have but one upding to give for that. I’ve thought for years that we were approaching a surge point in human evolution, with the exponential increase in the speed and availability of information serving to concentrate and magnify certain undesirable traits until they become a threat to human survival. The runaway depravity of the Republican Party and the growth of conspiracy culture are but two examples. This will force a showdown.

“I used to help draft the National Intelligence Estimate.

In case you’re not familiar with the finer points of threat assessment within the national security apparatus, the NIE is the big enchilada: the document seen by presidents and members of congress; an objective, non-political, comprehensive piece of work that categorises and prioritises the threats faced by the United States.

While I no longer have regular access to the complete set of intelligence reports from which the NIE is drawn, I have access to some, and I am an avid reader of the related publicly available information.

I’ve developed my own amateur NIE based on this information, and here’s the organisation at the top of the list:

Shocking as that may seem - and your level of shock may vary widely depending on how closely you’ve been tracking the actions both center stage and behind the scenes of the rapidly toxifying Grand Ole Party - the real problem with this revelation is that we cannot actually do much about this threat in the classic manner.

The threat from the right is the first national-level “insider threat” the United States has faced since the Civil War. It is insidious, asymmetric, powerful - and existential.

How did I come to this conclusion? Through empirical evidence and specialised experience, using the same approach as when I helped draft a document seen by the most powerful men and women in the country….”

That’s just it; the Pilgrims were religious fanatics seeking to establish a theocratic state. When they couldn’t do that back in Merry Old England, they ran off to Holland and out of fear of not being able to maintain their strictly sectarian identity, decided to go the New World instead where they’d be essentially unchallenged.

In Mrs. Fish’s argument with her hyper-wingnut relative last night, the lady tried to claim that the Pilgrims founded this country as a Christian nation. I reminded Mrs. Fish to point out that the first North American immigrants weren’t the Pilgrims, they were business people who settled in Virginia.

In the New World, where they could ban Christmas.

In Mrs. Fish’s argument with her hyper-wingnut relative last night, the lady tried to claim that the Pilgrims founded this country as a Christian nation. I reminded Mrs. Fish to point out that the first North American immigrants weren’t the Pilgrims, they were business people who settled in Virginia.

I just read through a section in Jill Lepore’s These Truths where she argues that church-going was at its lowest in the last half of the 18th century and first 20 years of the 19th and that few “Americans” would have cared much about the idea of America as a Christian nation; and as we all know, the founders worked very hard to keep religion out of the Constitution. The idea that America is a Christian nation was cooked up during the Second Great Awakening in the 1820s and 1830s, something the founders would have abhorred.

When we’re taught about the Pilgrims in school, we’re shown them as victims of the Stuarts making Anglicanism the state church. Although James I and Charles I deserve their criticism, the Pilgrims were religious radicals who weren’t looking for true religious freedom. They wanted a state where they could be the dominant denomination and oppress others.

Let’s ask the Puritans themselves about their thoughts on religious freedom:

Massachusetts Proscribes Quakers (May 24, 1677)

As an addition to the last law relating to Quakers meeting, the constables of every town are hereby required to make diligent search in their respective towns, especially on the Lord’s day, in all suspected places and houses, and where they know or may be informed that any Quakers are met to celebrate their irregular and prohibited worship, and are hereby empowered to break open any door where peaceable entrance is denied them, and such persons as shall be found at such meetings shall be apprehended and proceeded with and punished as the law provides in that case. And every constable neglecting his duty herein, and being legally convicted thereof, shall forfeit the sum of forty shillings to the use of the county. And for all such persons as shall be prosecuted or complained of for absenting themselves from the public allowed worship of God on the Lord’s day, and will not so much as affirm they were there or necessarily absent by the providence of God, it shall be adjudged a conviction and the breach of the law and punished accordingly.

Indeed - the Pilgrims came later. But this whole idea that “Pilgrims founded America” is ridiculous…..and bad history at best, historical revisionism at worst.

And if you know the history between the Church and the Monarchy in Britain from the Middle Ages through the 1700s, you know full damn well why these folks wanted to keep state mandated religion OUT of their new country.

Most everyone knows that I work for an evil too big to fail financial institution that has been the whipping boy of Elizabeth Warren over the last few years.

My sister works for a huge (larger than my evil too big to fail employer) health care services company. This company is accused, along with other huge health care services companies and enormous pharmacy chains, of basically employing no controls over the filling of oxycodone and hydrocodone orders.

On Friday, a judge in a massive case brought by many jurisdictions ordered the unsealing of emails and other documents in the case. The link below documents what has been found so far by busy beavery reporters.

washingtonpost.com

Earlier this week it came out that these companies had shipped out 76 billion (not a typo) oxycodone and hydrocodone pills between 2006 and 2012. I did some back of the envelope math, and that’s about 237 pills for every person in the USA. Yikes.

So is it wrong for me to feel a tiny bit of schadenfreude that my sisters massive employer is getting heat?

I wish they would shut the fuck up about “black on black” crime. Did FNC ever have a bunch of black people sitting around talking about how Bernie Madoff’s crimes were part of the “epidemic” of “white on white crime” No, it was seen as just crime. Most crime is just crime. And the reason is simple why BLM has protested against police brutality towards AFrican-Americans. It’s because the black people who commit crimes against other black people get punished. Robert McCullouch and other DAs aren’t excusing them because of a pre-existing bias but people like him sure as hell do when it comes to the cops or people like George Zimmerman woh get treated as heroes when they kill unarmed black people.

The Pilgrims founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony as Christian but the United States was intended to be free of such nonsense.

There were two groups of Puritans who established colonies in North America. The first group, historians call the Pilgrims, wanted to separate from the Anglican Church. They first went to Holland but didn’t like that their kids were becoming too Dutch. So, they went to North America where they established Plymouth Colony (which was eventually absorbed into Massachusetts Bay Colony).

The second group, who wanted to reform the Anglican Church from within, created the Massachusetts Bay Company to establish a colony in North America. This was originally a financial endeavor first and religious mission second, but before they left England, some of the investors dropped out and were replaced with staunch Puritans. The religious goals of the project moved to the top of the list. These were the Puritans who wanted to create the “city on the hill” so that all world would see the reforms they made and the Anglican Church would magically change.

Given all the saber rattling how do you get a “new” treaty with Iran when you’ve already proved that the USA under his control will not keep the previous one and also appears to be attempting to get a cause belli for a war at the same time?

Unless this is some belief that Iran can be bullied into accepting something.

Reminder to Google “Cromwell” to see how the Radical Xtians got political control in England and ran it into the ground!

re: #147 Feline Fearless Leader

Given all the saber rattling how do you get a “new” treaty with Iran when you’ve already proved that the USA under his control will not keep the previous one and also appears to be attempting to get a cause belli for a war at the same time?

Unless this is some belief that Iran can be bullied into accepting something.

Bolton and Pompeo are lusting for war — Trump, not so much. Iran’s leaders are not stupid; they are probably studying the NK playbook to see how to manipulate him into giving them everything they want, including nuclear weapons.

re: #146 Hecuba’s daughter

So is Trump’s actual Iranian policy just a remake of his NAFTA policy: abandoning the original, negotiating a “new” deal that will turn out to be essentially the same as the original, and then claiming credit for his brilliant skills? Big bonus here for him is that it will be a Trump treaty replacing an Obama treaty.

Tracking this, a rather ominous sign.

ASPEN, Colo. — In June the U.S. military began moving equipment and hundreds of troops back to a military base in Saudi Arabia that the U.S. deserted more than 15 years ago, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the deployment.

Over the coming weeks the deployment to Prince Sultan Air Base, intended to counter the threat from Iran, will grow to include fighter jets and Patriot long-range missile defense systems, the officials said. The Patriots have already arrived at the base and should be operational in mid-July, while the aircraft are expected to arrive in August.

Kim has been playing Trump for a fool from the jump. And it’s worked. The suspension of joint training operations with South Korea have strengthened North Korea’s position because South Korea has a conscript military that sees massive turn over year to year. He’s been legitimized on the world stage, and continues to build nuclear weapons because he know Trump won’t actually do anything.

I suspect the Iranian hardliners have learned from that. They know that Trump doesn’t command respect from our allies, which allows them to be provocative since they figure our allies won’t want to join Trump in military misadventures.

re: #87 Teddy’s Person

The Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony loathed Quakers, and indeed executed four English Quaker evangelists in 1659 and 1660, including a woman, Mary Dyer. This did not go over well in Merrie Olde England, and the recently-restored King Charles II sent royal disapproval of this policy of execution.

en.wikipedia.org

The history of religion in the Massachusetts Bay Colony is actually quite fascinating. There was of course this conflict with the Quakers, but also internal conflict as later generations of Puritans didn’t have the special experience that the older Puritans expected to indicate one had been “saved”. So you’d get these splits with a First Church and a Second Church in the same town, with the First Church people having assurance of their salvation and the Second Church people not being quite as assured (it’s a bit more complex than that). It’s worth remembering that out of this also came the Baptists (Roger Williams was tossed out of Massachusetts Bay) and the Unitarians much later.

My sister, I should note, has become a fan of QAnon. I can’t even talk to her any more. If I have anything to say, I relay it through our brother. I don’t have much to say, except to thank her for gifts she makes for me. (She is an excellent seamstress and made me a very nice purse last Christmas.)

I know the feeling since my “born again” Xtain relatives pore over every latest bird dropping from the Q shit. Now they believe that Soros paid for hit men to take out JFK Jr on the 4th of July so he would not appear at Trump’s parade.

They are now convinced Trump will declare Martial Law right before Mueller begins to testify this week. Q is telling them that special cells in Guantanamo are being prepared for Soros and his Democratic acolytes…

I’m sure that next week they will move on to the next set of Q shit…

QAnon is a classic cult - the constant moving of goalposts, the disregard of failed prophecies, etc.

But I find myself asking - what’s the endgame? What’s the long-term strategy? What’s the payoff? Is there one or is just trolling the rubes? What’s the deal?

I honestly think it’s some 4chan shitposter seeing how far he can take this. Strictly for the lulz.

Unfortunately, as the Comet Pizza incident in DC proves, the potential for people getting straight up murdered over this garbage is pretty high. That’s the upsetting thing: thinking there’s some 19 year old basement dweller orchestrating this shit, reading about someone being killed because of it, and then high fiving his buds over the “joke”.

As for dealing with family members: Joe Bacon, I can’t imagine what that’s like. My mom’s side of the family are all garden variety racists which seem quaint compared to the QAnon psychos.

Heat-adjace cat story…

Our basement is divided into two halves - on one side is our ‘den’ and the other side is unfinished storage. The storage area has become a favorite hangout for our cats, and it has one small window. And thereby hangs a tale…

I got home from my gig last night and was completely punched out, so I went to bed. I was just about to fall asleep when my wife came in and said ‘There’s a cat on our patio that looks like (our cat) Spock!’ I told her that wasn’t possible because our cats are indoor cats and there’s no way for them to get outside.

(Complicating matters, our next door neighbors got a cat who looks exactly like our cat Spock (grey tabby), so I thought she was seeing the look-alike kitty. And though I told her to just let the cat go, she opened the door to the enclosed porch and let the cat in. I fell asleep, wife came to bed.)

I woke up this morning and the cat was still on the porch. Still thinking it was the look-alike, I went down to the basement to see if I could find Spock. I looked in the storage and didn’t see her, then went and checked the window.

It turns out that the window was actually a piece of Lexan, and the former owners didn’t bother to putty it into the window frame - they just wedged it in. And our Spock got the idea to keep pushing on the window until it gave way and formed a makeshift kitty door. I pushed on the window and it swung open from the bottom, enabling Spock to go on her kitty outdoor adventure.

So I went up and opened the door and let Spock back into the house. The door to the storage area is now closed, all cats are indoors. Spock’s brother Bean sniffed her and got completely freaked out. He now eyes Spock with suspicion. But he’ll get over that, I hope.

LOL, cats are something else. I like to think that Spock was silently taunting you two by sitting on the porch. I used to have a cat that did that to the neighbors’ dog. She’d sit about 10 feet from the fence and just calmly watch them go apeshit.

I cannot imagine the lengths they go to to even try to sustain plausibility of that bullshit. First JFK Jr. was going to ‘reveal himself’ at Trump’s fascist-fest on July 4 (which of course didn’t happen because the man is fucking dead).

What upsets me is these idiots are organized enough to get out and vote, whereas the “independents” and Bernie Bros I know are still threatening another 2020 ballot box sick out if they don’t get their way.

I’m really close to doing a massive soapbox on Facebook about Trump’s racist attacks on AOC and company. I grew up going to family parties listening to the all of the “Greatest” Generation and Baby Boomers cackling about sending black people back to Africa, and other repellent shit.

This is what America is now: your racist uncle or grandparent is running the fucking country for all the world to see. And it sickens me to no end. re: #226 Mattand

The few times I’ve tried to talk to the fence sitters, it’s either “Eh, it’ll be fine, I’m not being affected” or the usual “Why bother, they’re all the same” Magic Balance Fairy crap.

I should get out and try to canvas or get involved in some other way, but I know myself. I can’t deal with people who think this way. I’d be fired within hours because I have no patience mollycoddling this crowd, which is probably what is needed to at least crack the door.

I don’t know. I need to do something other than keyboard warrior this stuff.

My experience with “canvassing “ was going to confirmed Dem voters. Met a lot of good hearted people. I couldn’t handle idiots either and talking to them is a waste of time.

Question: What in the hell is the National Sentinel?

Real Fake News. Seriously, it’s just a website.

This is part of my larger criticism of many Evangelicals, including this bunch. So many of them believe in a 6,000 year old earth. As we know, the sciences (geology, biology, astronomy, physics, chemistry, etc., etc.) backs up in various ways that the earth is very, very old and is in a much older universe. I like to tell these people: “If you will lie to me about the age of the earth, then why should I believe you when you tell me you know the way to God? In fact, I shouldn’t.”

I think their leader is getting a “James White: Denying your White Privilege is a very bad look” sign tomorrow.

I feel the same. We just had a lady here in our county, who makes no secret of her Democratic Party activism and she’s a part of the state level party apparatus. So her car has bumper stickers supporting dems and liberal causes. Some asshole put trump stickers on her car and then stalked and harassed her for several miles after she got in her car and drove away(she was able to peel the stickers off). He was an asshole who filmed himself doing all that and then posted it to Facebook. She’s pressing charges, he was arrested. Which is surprising honestly.I wouldn’t feel safe knocking on doors here. Goodman, and Chaney were murdered by the Klan talking about states rights(that was Manafort’s idea too), Willie Horton, and Rove using Evangelical oppositon to same sex marriage to get Bush reelection. And of course, birtherism and telling GOP voters repeatedly that tehy are real Americans and Democratic voters aren’t and are nothing but moochers. I appreciate the anti-Trump conservatives in some ways but in other ways, I want them to soul search and look at the men and women they have considered exemplars of conservative ideology like Buckley, Schaflry, Reagan, and others.

Three members of a white supremacist group were sentenced to prison Friday for kicking, choking and punching multiple people during the 2017 “United the Right” rally in Charlottesville and other rallies in California.

Benjamin Daley, 26, was sentenced to 37 months in prison; 25-year-old Thomas Gillen was sentenced to 33 months; and Michael Miselis, 30, was sentenced to 27 months, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia said in statement.

The three were members of the California-based militant white supremacist organization “Rise Above Movement.” The group no longer exists, according to the attorney’s office.

A fourth defendant, Cole Evan White, will be sentenced at a later date, the attorney’s office said.

“These defendants, motivated by hateful ideology, incited and committed acts of violence in Charlottesville, as well at other purported political rallies in California,” U.S. Attorney Thomas T. Cullen said.

“They were not interested in peaceful protest or lawful First Amendment expression; instead, they intended to provoke and engage in street battles with those that they perceived as their enemies.”

I’ll tell you what triggers me about the US flag. All the “patriotic” morons who leave their dirty shredded flag up 24/7. They violate the Flag Code in every conceivable way but tell you what great americans they are.

I am patriotic and I fly five flags at all times 24x7, at my house and attached farm and disc golf courses, named the Red, White and Blue Disc Golf Courses.

The Flag Code is not law that can be enforced, it is merely a suggested etiquette for behavior regarding the flag. No law, can’t be enforced. Mostly comes from ways to keep enlisted men busy.

Not to mention that is etiquette that was considered appropriate back when my wife would be have been known as “Mrs ‘My First Name’ 7-y” which, thankfully, is a bit outdated.

And my favorite reason why I never take my flags down: Read the lyrics to the national anthem about the Star Spangled Banner. That famous flag flew all night!

The US government is honoring an 83-year-old Muslim cleric who hid 262 Christians in his home and mosque during an attack in central Nigeria.

Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, along with four religious leaders from Sudan, Iraq, Brazil and Cyprus, were awarded the 2019 the International Religious Freedom Award, which is given to advocates of religious freedom.

Abdullahi was recognized for providing shelter for hundreds of Christians fleeing attacks from Muslim herdsmen who had launched coordinated attacks on Christian farmers in 10 villages in the Barkin Ladi area of Plateau State on June 23, 2018, the award organizers said in a statement.

The cleric refused to give them up when their attackers asked about their whereabouts, International Religious Freedom Ambassador Sam Brownback said at the awards ceremony in Washington on Wednesday.

“The imam gave refuge to his Christian neighbors, sheltering 262 Christians in his mosque and his home…. then stood outside the doors confronting the Muslim attackers, pleading with them to spare the lives of the Christians inside, even offering to exchange his own life for theirs,” Brownback said.

“His actions bear witness to true courage, true selflessness, and true brotherly love,” he said.

I’d daresay that Imam Abdullahi has displayed more courage that Trump, Hannity and Rush Limbaugh combined would even be capable of mustering.

Ohhhh yeah. For Trump, he doesn’t just have “Muslim” as a strike against him, he also has “Black person”.

Because I think Islam is slightly less likely than Catholicism to post a cleric 5k miles from where they were raised just for the sake of posting a cleric 5k miles from where they were raised, so that would make him Nigerian.

A Gas Station Clerk Who Told Latina Women “They Need To Go Back To Their Country” Has Been Fired (Buzzfeed, more at the link, with video from Facebook):

An Illinois gas station clerk who threatened a group of Latina customers that “ICE will come,” was fired two days after video of the altercation went viral, the store’s owner said Thursday.

In the video posted on Facebook, a clerk standing behind the payment counter is heard apparently complaining to two women about what he suspected were undocumented people.

The video exchange occurred two days after Trump sent out his Tweet at the four female Democratic congresswomen he’s been attacking.

“Let me be abundantly clear: hate has no home here in Naperville,” Mayor Steve Chirico said in a statement posted on Facebook Wednesday. “Quite frankly, this type of behavior has no place in society at large.”

Naperville Police told BuzzFeed News the department was also aware of the video and was looking into the incident. The police department has been in contact with the city attorney, Commander Mike Son said, but no charges had been filed.

The clerk in the video was identified as Joseph Phillip Daniel, a Trump supporter who describes himself on social media as a “prophet,” and has repeatedly posted videos of himself reciting prayers in the middle of natural landscapes.

When they left the store, he told them “God bless you.”

No mainline Protestant church nor the Catholic Church has yet to condemn Trump’s repeated racist remarks, nor even a more milquetoast general condemnation of such statements. None. Individuals have, but not their officials or their churches.

I saw a nest of the related Curve-billed Thrashers, and the barely-fledged one had a yellow edged beak like Belafon’s birb. Probably a common feature among hatchlings, or maybe a confirmatory thing.

Did I expect any church to call out that profiteering prophet?

Nope.

No mainline Protestant church nor the Catholic Church has yet to condemn Trump’s repeated racist remarks, nor even a more milquetoast general condemnation of such statements. None. Individuals have, but not their officials or their churches.

Are you saying churches are neglecting politics?

Another self-described “prophet”, eh?. Like Mark Taylor, the so-called “firefighter prophet”, whom I can only conclude is suffering from manner of undiagnosed schizoaffective disorder.

Another fake who rides the tax exempt Gravy train!

The clerk in the video was identified as Joseph Phillip Daniel, a Trump supporter who describes himself on social media as a “prophet,”

Seems to be a lot of that going around. Angry Short Long Island Bagel Guy has described himself as a ‘prophet,’ too.

I’m thinking they’re misspelling ‘idiot’ or ‘asshole.’

The Flag Code does not have the force of law, but the flag is constantly used by conservatives to show how patriotic they are (when a liberal does something with it they don’t like).

I think it’s perfectly fine to call out hypocrisy on conservatives about use of the flag (or ask questions such as “do you know what’s in the flag code”).

There’s a reason my town made the leftiest person in town the Flag Committee chairman after the last person died. I know how the village government is supposed to display the flags, can find out if they are supposed to be at half-staff, care about them if their faded or worn, &c.

Schizoaffective disorder does not make you into a bigot.

He’s a bigot first, then uses religion to justify bigorty (and there’s a whole lot of that in the Bible).

Mom is a paranoid schizophrenic, but one thing she isn’t is a bigot. She was the one who insisted that I should have the African-American kindergarten teacher at my elementary school. (Apparently there was an Issue with African-American teachers teaching white children back in 1965, even in the suburban Bay Area.) My sister had the same teacher two years later, for the same reason. I loved Miss O’Brien.

Rev. Barber speaks out, gets indicted and convicted.

No church rises to defend him.

Lay Catholics get arrested for speaking out against the concentration camps.

Catholic Bishops continue to march lock step with the Republican Party.

Churches repeat the latest GOP talking points every Sunday.

Which is why they need to be kicked off the tax exempt Gravy Train!

Wow, there’s a red flag warning stretching across half the country.

People here posting temperatures in excess of 100°F. Dayum.

At Tumbleweed Terrace it’s 72°F, with a slight chance of rain or storms today and tonight.
forecast.weather.gov

Temps will be climbing higher in the next few days, but not like that 107°F crap we had yesterday while I was out swinging a pickaxe.

Sometimes I think Soledad O’Brien is the only real journalist left in this blasted Trumpian hellscape.

She currently not a journalist like the others. She’s more in line with Maddow. She has a weekly show.

So you fly a shredded flag at night in the dark?

No. I do fly it at night, because my gaff is lighted.

No. I do fly it at night, because my gaff is lighted.

Lighted is great. If the flag code is just a suggestion which can be ignored why is kneeling during the anthem any problem at all? I know you follow the code, not directed at you. I’m tired of patriots picking and choosing what behavior is acceptable.

Iran’s not stupid enough to put their nuclear facilities where they can be “wiped out”… everything’s deep underground. They learned that lesson by seeing what the Israelis did to Iraq’s nuclear facility.

re: #234 A Mom Anon

I feel the same. We just had a lady here in our county, who makes no secret of her Democratic Party activism and she’s a part of the state level party apparatus. So her car has bumper stickers supporting dems and liberal causes. Some asshole put trump stickers on her car and then stalked and harassed her for several miles after she got in her car and drove away(she was able to peel the stickers off). He was an asshole who filmed himself doing all that and then posted it to Facebook. She’s pressing charges, he was arrested. Which is surprising honestly.I wouldn’t feel safe knocking on doors here. I’m thinking of doing something less obvious in the community service realm. My kid is grown and I’m at loose ends these days.

Jesus, that’s fucking messed up. You know this guy’s mindset was “All cops here support Trump. They’ll have my back, I can do anything I want.”

It would not surprise me to learn that there was probably an internal debate among the police at the station to even charge this guy.
