I actually like this. And that’s saying something because I haven’t been a huge fan of Collier so far. Kid is amazingly talented, no doubt, just not really my thing.

He makes more like this though and I might be converted.

re: #314 wrenchwench

Are you saying churches are neglecting politics?

They can address these issues without endorsing parties or candidates.

Taking a moral stand against racism or mistreatment of asylees shouldn’t be politics for churches, in which their holy book tells them to do exactly that.

But if they did that, then they lo$e the bigot$ who put ¢a$h in the plate$ every week. $ince it$ vita£ to ¢hur¢h organi$ation$ to en$ure the word of God is propagated to a$ many peop£e as po$$ible, the organi$ation$ won’t take a $tand ba$ed on their own book$.

I’m sure it doesn’t have anything to do with money for church organisations though, just moral teachings.

Pastors like Rev. Barber are inspiring to people like me (even without religion). He walks the talk and speaks truth to power. No church denomination, none, does, because they are power.

So, some news out of Turkey - our old buddy, Adnan Oktar….yeah, he’s in deep shit.

Istanbul’s High Criminal Court No: 30 has approved the indictment against the controversial Turkish televangelist Adnan Oktar and his collaborators, judicial sources said on July 19.

The charge sheet filed by the terrorism and organized crimes bureau of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office was evaluated by the court.

……….

The charge sheet has pleaded for the punishment of Oktar’s crime syndicate, under various provisions of the penal code, ranging from committing various crimes such as engaging in military espionage, organizing a criminal gang, sexual abuse, blackmailing, persecution, bribery, attempt to murder, having membership of an armed organization and forgery.

If convicted on all counts, this wannabe Versace-clad Mahdi and his “kittens” are looking at 800+ years in the slammer.

A bunch of them seem to have embraced the false prophet that the New Testament warns them about.

That’s not new though; there’s a reason “slave Bibles” existed in the antebellum South. Cutting out all the social justice stuff just in case someone might read what the book actually says and get “uppity.”

Moon landing denialists are out in force but they haven’t taken every seat on the Crazy Train by any means:

‘Spiderman’ hands sculpture demonic, anti-Christian, woman says

In Nebraska, a woman complained to city officials that a 6-foot-tall red-and-black painted sculpture of outstretched hands is demonic, anti-Christian and a hate-crime against the church, the Lincoln Journal-Star reported.

The fiberglass sculpture, titled “Spiderman” by artist Ian Anthony is one of 51 “Serving Hands Lincoln” installations placed throughout the city. The art will be auctioned in October to benefit Campus Life, part of Lincoln Youth for Christ, a nondenominational charity group that helps teens.

I understand how these fundamentalist extremist christians are worried. They can read in the OT how god used collective judgement and punished collectively. Ergo if they don’t enforce shariah law christian version they will face the same punishment as the “sinners”.
But they can’t understand how their climate change denial will result in a science-based collective judgment. One that is real, not from a book of Bronze Age mythology

“Hate crime against the church.” Sure, Jan.

The sculpture of red-and-black hands shooting a spiderweb near the Lincoln Children’s Zoo offended a Lincoln woman so much she wrote to Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird demanding city action.

“It is a sculpture of two hands open, painted Red & Black, and formed into Devil Horns,” she wrote in an email Friday, calling the art anti-Christian, demonic, and completely inappropriate for showcase near a family attraction.

She demanded the city move the 6-foot Spider-Man sculpture because it’s ugly, perverse and a “hate crime against the church.”

journalstar.com (Lincoln, Nebr. Journal-Star, more at the link)

Yup. That’s the kind of person I fear who identifies as a Christian. The article doesn’t say whether she’s a fundamentalist or not, so I don’t know about that. That is the kind of person I’d be afraid would try to burn down my house if I lived next to her.

RAM founder Ben Daley, along with members Thomas Gillen and Michael Miselis, were indicted in October on conspiracy to violate the federal riots act and to travel from California to Virginia in order to “incite a riot, organize, promote, encourage, participate in, and carry on in a riot, to commit an act of violence in furtherance of a riot, or aid or abet any person inciting and participating in or carrying on in a riot.”

They would have been sentenced to more — and RAM founder Ben Daley ended up getting less than the recommended sentence — but the judge did not feel as though the hate crime statute should apply, because they weren’t specifically beating people up because they were Jewish or members of another minority group.

The prosecution’s case was bolstered by the testimony of one very bad ass bartender who documented Daley bragging about how they were there to assault people and planned to do more of it in the future.

What goes around comes around.

Hackers have breached SyTech, a contractor for FSB, Russia’s national intelligence service, from where they stole information about internal projects the company was working on behalf of the agency — including one for deanonymizing Tor traffic.

The breach took place last weekend, on July 13, when a group of hackers going by the name of 0v1ru$ hacked into SyTech’s Active Directory server from where they gained access to the company’s entire IT network, including a JIRA instance.

Hackers stole 7.5TB of data from the contractor’s network, and they defaced the company’s website with a “yoba face,” an emoji popular with Russian users that stands for “trolling.”

I learned something new today. Megan Rapinoe is from Redding, CA, home of Bethel Church. And no, those two things do not mix.

In the past, the town has celebrated their homegrown celebrity: in 2015, Redding declared July 21 “Megan Rapinoe Day,” named a street in her honor, and changed the address of their soccer field to “15 Rapinoe Way,” after her jersey number. But Redding’s relationship with Rapinoe has grown uneasy. In a recent Record Searchlight letter to the editor, a resident called the soccer player “a selfish unpatriotic bigot and a total disgrace to our national team.” In a follow-up article, an ex-firefighter told the Searchlight he “hope[s] she breaks her legs.”

More about Rapinoe and the dominant church in Redding in this article.

I’ll be honest. I don’t fear that. I fear the same propaganda that divided Trumps opposition and allowed him to squeak by. Most Americans don’t like Trump but with the flawed EC, he can still win. He could easily become the first President to lose the popular vote twice and win the EC.

Scott Walker admits it: Former Wisconsin governor argues votes in metropolitan areas shouldn’t count as much as votes in rural areas (Media Matters for America, yesterday).

Since losing his bid for a third term as governor, Walker has turned to conservative punditry with a podcast called You Can’t Recall Courage — a reference to Walker’s escape from a 2012 recall election after he led a massive union-busting initiative. Walker also recently joined right-wing campus group Young Americans Foundation and, importantly, he is the national finance chair for the National Republican Redistricting Trust, which Politico described as “the GOP’s data and legal hub preparing for redistricting after the next census” in 2020.

During the July 5 edition of You Can’t Recall Courage, Walker offered further justification of his tweet. Complaining about high voter turnout in liberal-leaning Madison and “unbelievably big” Democratic margins of victory in districts in and around Madison, Walker said it’s a “flawed argument” to say that “a vote in Madison counts the same as a vote in a very rural community or in a suburban community.”

So his argument is the Dems win big in urban areas. Well? Do something about that instead of rigging the system. The Dems don’t rig the system because you pile up big wins in rural counties. You simply can’t accept that land mass and population are proportionally related.

The problem is always going to be that no matter how aggressive our messaging is, it’s always going to be drowned out the media not only repeatedly amplifying the GOP’s messaging at face value, but actively shitting on anything the Dems put out and allowing the GOP to define what the Dems are saying rather than the Dems’ own words.

Even with the power of the internet, we’re seeing not more opportunities to break through that bulwark, but instead more opportunity for that bulwark to solidify to total impenetrabiltiy.

Stone? Stone is part of the circular spectrum. Putin disguises his imperialist autocracy as being anti Western imperialism and Western far lefties like Ollie eat that shit for breakfast. As for Schultz, he was a right wing prick before and his hostility towards outsourcing was based in nationalist xenophobia.

And now Glenn is starting to worry since the Nationalist crap he said was a lesser evil than the Center Left has come to Rio and he’s scared. Pretty much that’s his argument.

Wisconsin is the most-extremely gerrymandered state legislature. Without the gerrymandering, Democrats would be in charge, and he knows it (which is why he lost his reëlection bid).

Since cities lean Democratic, and gerrymandering can’t affect a statewide election, the only argument he can make is to say their votes should count for less.

I don’t believe it would be possible to actually implement such a scheme, but the point is to make rural conservative voters feel they are victims.

The other thing the GOP could do is change their platforms and messaging to appeal to city voters (which means giving up carrying water for the ultra-wealthy money hoarders and corporations, and giving up the racism inherent in conservatism). They won’t do that.

Interesting tidbit here but until 1932, the cities were divided politics wise. That changed and the Republicans ever since have been playing the land mass equals population game.

It’s funny but the most devout President I can think of, Jimmy Carter didn’t have a religious adviser. Carter was sincere in his faith. I may not agree with how he sees those philosophical questions we all ask but he correctly realized his answer was not everyone’s. And he wasn’t pandering to those who thought theirs was the only one like this nut who is no great thinker.

And because Jimmy Carter didn’t pander to religious people, in great droves they turned their backs on him. Not just Evangelical Christians (which he is), but all Christian denominations.

The same happened with Trump versus Clinton.

Totally OT, but I was just watching the Beatles rooftop concert where they shut down the business district at lunch time and the Bobbies then shut down the concert. And I have to ask: what the fuck was up with the chin straps that wrapped just under the lower lip? That had to have made the Bobbies in a perpetual bad mood. Was that the purpose? Or, more likely, was it a safety thing, so that they didn’t get strangled when someone pulled on the preposterous helmet-hat?

My knowledge of art is close to zero.

I did see the Mona Lisa in Paris at the Louvre.

What struck me about all the paintings hung in the hall where it is displayed is the great number of heavy gilt frames. They seemed to detract from the paintings to me.

The number of students surrounding each painting hung there taking notes, drawing sketches, &c was huge that day.

I was more taken in by the crowd of people I saw in the Louvre than the paintings and sculptures themselves.

When I went to St. Peter’s Basilica, I specifically wanted to see La Pietà. (That was after it had been attacked by the deranged person with a hammer, then repaired.)

I found that to be far more interesting than the Mona Lisa. The idea that Michelangelo could carve from stone such a smooth and detailed rendition overwhelmed me with his skill and artistic eye.

I shit you negative:

I really don’t take issue with how each side of the ST franchise has gone about its business since the 2005 split of CBS and Viacom; the “Kelvinverse” movies have, by and large, been good and were fantastic love letters to (and sometimes straight-up lifts from) ST:TOS, ST: Discovery’s done pretty good with its pre-TOS timeline and stories, and ST: Picard is starting to look and sound like pure SF geek sex.

That said, it’d be nice to have Star Trek back under one roof, if for nothing else but to put the conspiracy theories of how the franchise works under CBS and Viacom to bed for good and, yes, to perhaps have things a bit more consistent between the TV and film sides of the franchise.

I suppose that depends on how you define “the change they wanted.” Certainly there were Republicans as early as 2009 defending their refusal to work with Obama by pointing to the movement. Or we could point to Scott Brown winning the “Kennedy Seat,” ending any talk of breaking a filibuster to pass the House version of the ACA.

The World’s Largest Intact Mosaic Opens to the Public in Antakya, Turkey

A 9,000 square-foot mosaic is set to open this year after its discovery nine years ago during the construction of a new hotel in Antakya, Turkey. Archaeologists at the site believe the geometric work once decorated the floor of a public building in the previous city of Antioch, one of the most important cities in the Seleucid Empire. Although vast segments of the original mosaic are still intact, others have rippled and disappeared due to a series of earthquakes in 526 and 528 A.D.

When did the Tea Party start seeing the change they wanted?

Pretty sure the Tea Party got at least a lion share of the change they wanted almost immediately on the GOP winning in ‘10. They pretty much ground any genuine progress that could have been wrung out of the Obama presidency to a halt and irreparably changed the narrative on him to this day. Obama won in ‘12, which stopped the whole ‘one-term president’ wish, but any gains we got were mostly piecemeal through EOs and changes in enforcement, with Congress being the supermassive roadblock to getting anything done. The Tea Party essentially took over the GOP, at least to the extent that they could’ve been considered separate entities to begin with.

Got stuck in the Southern coal fields of West Virginia while the wife labored at a terrible private college run by a crooked slimeball and his cronies (but the crooked slimeball HAD cut a gospel CD, so that gained him a lot of cred with the Board). The college was run like a metaphorical coal camp, upgraded to a university. We eventually escaped and several years ago - and years after our escape - the school I nickname “Appalachian Trump U” lost its accreditation and was forced to shut down.

I don’t think we’re really disagreeing — it’s a learned behavior, yes, but that doesn’t preclude it being a disorder. In any case that was really my point - that racism is a dysfunctional way of thinking, not some innate, nebulous feature like a soul.

“they have to be carefully taught”

Substitute something else for racism. For example, religious belief. Religion is a disorder. Listen to the howl which comes up if you make that assertion, and religious belief is absolutely taught.

Sigh….so….WaPo has this story that pretty much goes against all the boogeymanning regarding immigration and crime:

So predictably, almost all the replies are about how, no, immigration is necessarily the cause of all crime and terrorism because evil teeming brown hordes, etc.

This shit wouldn’t upset me nearly as much if I didn’t see ostensibly liberal and lefty folks on Twitter and elsewhere basically buying into exactly that rhetoric and falling behind the kind of ‘Close the Borders’ fever the right-wing is all in on. And I know polls are much rosier on Americans’ opinions on immigration, but it’s just really, really, really hard to fucking see that sometimes when you’re drowning in the ‘IMMIGRANTS ARE CRIMINAL DEATHSATANS!” rhetoric seemingly from all sides.

Just to make many of you feel bad, it looks like summer is just about over at our SE AK Homestead. A week ago the long term high pressure (2 Weeks +) over Alaska was broken down and squeezed out of the State. Two weeks of glorious 75 - 85 temps along with very smokey air. Now we’re back to days in the mid 50’s with moisture falling out of the sky. The weather service has multiple names for wet weather….showers, light showers, rain, patchy rain, and, for the first time that I’ve noticed, drizzle. Must be a new forecaster from somewhere down south.

Still a lot of fires in Interior Alaska, so the moisture hasn’t gotten everywhere.

Judy Collins - LA COLOMBE

Why all these bugles crying for squads of young men drilled
To kill and to be killed and waiting by this train?
Why the orders loud and hoarse, why the engine’s groaning cough
As it strains to drag us off into the holocaust?
Why crowds who sing and cry, and shout and fling us flowers
And trade their right for ours to murder and to die?
The dove has torn her wings so no more songs of love
We are not here to sing, we’re here to kill the dove

A week ago I saw a Curve-billed Thrasher, sitting on a nest in a cholla, and I carefully moved closer until the birb got off the nest, then I saw a fuzzy rump of a hatchling. I carefully moved away (on the sidewalk it was right next to, 3 blocks from downtown). A few days later, I checked again, and saw a huge yellow mouth pasted onto a fuzzy birblet. Today, I carefully inspected, and there are three! The first fuzzy one (now almost fully covered) and two smaller ones. An adult was on the nearest tree branch with something dangling from its beak. I hurried along.

276
Charles Johnson  Jul 20, 2019 • 6:09:11pm

I once had a bird fly full speed into a glass sliding door while I was sitting on a couch in that room. BOOM! Thought it was an earthquake at first, then I saw the bird outside lying on the ground, sort of shivering.

I was thinking “Oh shit, I have to go out and clean that dead motherfucker up,” when suddenly it stood up, looked around, then flew away.

Well, I followed a trail from a picture I saw.
First, let me introduce the USS Simon Lake (AS-33). A 1st of her class Submarine Tender laid down next in 1963.

She was decommissioned in 99 and is now being broken in TX.

I’m getting one of her engineering anvils.

I don’t know why this happens….

And I guess there is more tooling still in spaces. They will need to cut down to them though. Hopefully I get a tour on Wednesday when I go to the yard.

Where’s Myanmar? Asked the man who knows everything and doesn’t like to read. Trump is quite honestly one of the most ignorant people I’ve ever seen let alone Presidents. Not merely unintelligent, ignorant. There are subjects I feel uninformed on but that’s not ignorance. Ignorance is thinking you know something you know little if any about and with Trump it’s that times 1000.

I know where Myanmar is, because Trevor Noah described it in a way I will always remember:

“It’s bordered by India, China and Thailand, so you know the food must be AMAZING.”
