On July 24 at 8:30 a.m. ET, Robert Mueller will deliver long-awaited testimony before the House Judiciary Committee and the House Intelligence Committee about his investigation into President Trump and Russian interference in the 2016 election. Democrats are hoping that he will illuminate potential obstruction of justice by President Trump and that could galvanize public opinion against the president. Republicans, meanwhile, will be looking to elicit testimony that shows the investigation was biased from its inception. Live coverage will begin at 8 a.m., hosted by Washington Post reporter Emily Heil and featuring analysis from Washington Post reporters on the scene at the Capitol. Read more: wapo.st. Meatworld MAGAT encounter behind the button..

Last night my wife and I attended a lecture at our local library by SCCC history professor Christopher Verga, who has written an interesting book called Saving Fire Island from Robert Moses: The Fight for a National Treasure, about Moses’ long imagined plan to essentially decimate every community on Fire Island by building a four-lane highway along the entire length of the island and how LI residents finally stopped him. It was a very entertaining lecture, and we learned a lot of things about Fire Island that we never knew before.

Professor Verga was talking about Moses’ many projects on Long Island, including the Northern and Southern State Parkways. He asked if anyone knew why he built the overpasses on the parkways so low, and my wife correctly answered that it was to keep city buses from using the parkways to carry minorities from the city to the parks.

At that point, a woman in the back of the room loudly said ‘I think that’s an excellent idea.’

The room went silent. The professor had a ‘WTF’ look on his face. The woman continued.

‘I live near Heckscher Park and I’m sick and tired of people who don’t belong here coming here and making a mess of the park!’ The others in the room groaned. My wife turned around and shot the woman a look and said ‘Why would you say something so bigoted?’

Then came the ‘I’m not a bigot’ excuse - ‘I don’t care if they’re black, Jewish, Italian or whatever. If you don’t live here, don’t come here!’

The other people in the room countered the woman, who got so flustered that she got up and left. It took a minute for everyone to refocus and the lecture continued. I see shit like that all day long on the internet, but it’s another thing entirely to actually hear someone saying it out loud right in front of you. Hopefully the woman caught a clue, but I doubt it.

Anyway, good lecture. We bought the book. Some good history in there, including the possibility of turning Fire Island into a World Heritage site. Recommended.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area, where the weather is bright and sunny, and we could use the disinfectant of law enforcement taking it to Trumpworld.

Mueller hearing is already underway, and the lede is key.

Nothing in the report exonerated Trump of wrongdoing.

That Mueller intends to stay within the scope of the report is harsh for the GOP, who hoped to turn this in to a conspiracy theory dumpster dive.

Democrats will be able to ask questions about actual contents of the report, which they’ve studied and read. GOPers studiously ignored reading the entire report, because they identified that being ignorant of the report was better than knowing Trump did all these crimes. That way they can appear shocked when Mueller tells them again in open testimony what he had previously said in the report.

The GOP will still defend Trump, but they’ll get to act surprised and outraged… which is their perpetual state. Count on it.

Meanwhile, Trump’s tweets continue to sound more desperate by the minute. They’re going to need to give him sedatives before the morning is through.

Initial thoughts: this is drier than the toast I just made.

Mueller is not a compelling public speaker, and he’s so constrained himself here as to all but ensure he’s not going to say anything that will make much of a news clip later tonight.

Collins and the other Republicans are flinging enough poop to create clips that will satisfy those who are looking to reinforce their existing belief that Trump was cleared.

And anyone less politically engaged than, well… us, probably tuned out half an hour ago if they were watching at all.

Exactly. In short, he’s protected because of an imo wrong DOJ policy. But even if you accept the DOJ policy, do not act like he is exonerated. The real reason we don’t know more is exactly because of the things covered in the report.

And then the really devious Republican legislators try to punish people for abortions obtained in other states. They always go all out in assholery. Make a voter id mandatory, close down all the DMVs in urban areas where most of the people need that Id. The GOP/right is inherently anti democratic.

You don’t need to tell me. Only clinic in this state is 3 hours away from most of our other population centers. And our laws require a waiting period before the procedure can be performed. A woman wanting an abortion does not only have to get to the city the clinic is in, she had to be able to stay there for a couple of days.

The GOP have made several attempts to close the clinic down, but judges have blocked them every time.

From two threads ago:

re: #164 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

re: #197 Anymouse 🌹

Specifically, it is the Christian apologetic argument known as the Kalam Cosmological Argument.

Aside from the fact that philosophical arguments prove nothing, it fails because it makes an unfalsifiable assumption for its first argument “everything which exists must have a cause.”

It then makes an unproveable assumption “that cause must be a god, and specifically the Christian god.”

William Lane Craig resurrected this argument from mediæval Islamic scholarship. “Kalam” is actually the name of Islamic scholarship. Modern Islam has abandoned this argument for the existence of God (Allah).

So the argument for proof of a Christian god based on this argument can be debunked multiple ways:

a) It’s not a Christian argument. (Appeal to their bigotry.)
b) The correct answers to all the premises is “we don’t know,” therefore God as the conclusion can be rejected outright (because the premises are faulty and God has never been demonstrated).

I addressed this as my first apologetics fail on my wife’s Website.

Abortion availability is already so limited that it hardly matters whether one exists within a particular state boundary. If the only clinic is in Milwaukee for example, for half of the state it is more convenient to go to Minneapolis.

Same here. The nearest one to this area is in Greeley, Colo., 125 miles away. Fort Collins, Colo. is next at 135 miles. Then Denver, then Colorado Springs.

The nearest clinic (there is only one) in Wyoming is Emerg-a-care in Jackson Hole (over 400 miles away).

The nearest clinic within my state is in Lincoln (400 miles away).

It’s a bit of a no win situation. They needed Mueller to testify. It was also known by anyone with any passing connection to reality that the GOP would dredge up any goddamn thing from the fever swamps that they could then throw at Mueller. The Dems that I heard question him did a good job, for the most part. Focused. Citation based. GOP is either specifically stating that their source is someone like Greg Jarrett or mealy mouthed phrases like “evidence suggests”. And with 5 minute blocks, it’s almost impossible to combat a Gish Gallop approach.

Nevertheless, they’ve got Mueller on record, again, saying he didn’t exonerate Trump, and, more importantly, he specifically stated that the only reason he wasn’t indicted was because of DOJ policy.

227
Old Liberal  Jul 24, 2019 • 8:28:36am

Mueller issued a 400 some page report. Barr immediately mischaracterized it. This hearing is setting the record. It won’t and never would convert trumpistas. It isn’t Perry Mason. It puts the actual facts in the minds of the other 55% of the voting population.

Puerto Rico governor Ricardo Rosselló’s resignation ‘imminent,’ local media reports (Miami Herald)

Puerto Rico governor Ricardo Rosselló will resign by Wednesday following nearly two weeks of relentless protests calling for him to step down, according to reports by two major local media outlets.

Rumors of his resignation have circled in Puerto Rico since Sunday, after Rosselló spent the day meeting with cabinet members and mayors of his party. He announced that evening he was resigning to the presidency of the pro-statehood New Progressive Party and would not run for re-election.

Rosselló will offer a farewell announcement that would be broadcast before noon on Wednesday, sources told El Nuevo Día.

The person who would succeed him is normally the Puerto Rico Secretary of State, per the Commonwealth’s constitution. However, that seat is currently vacant, so next in line is the Secretary of Department of Justice, Wanda Vázquez (PNP).

Dems will fix things. People will “forget” the GOP always fucks things up, and we’ll go through a similar cycle in 8 years. (My one caveat to this is if the GOP retain control of the Senate, whether McConnell would go scorched earth on everything from inauguration day through the next election—I unfortunately think I know the answer).

The one thing where we are fucked is that no one will ever trust the US again, irrespective of Senate control. Trump has shown that the US will renege on any deal. Previously, most foreign partners believed that treaties and alliances could/would survive short term domestic political oscillations. No more.

Every generation of new voters must be taught from a young age that conservatism is about conserving and gaining power.

Everyone threw their hands up in victory when Obama was elected, and forgot about the midterms which followed in 2010. The GOP seized enough state legislatures to gerrymander the crap out of states after the census.

Basically, the Repubs thought that Barr’s letter would help them while hurting the Dems, preventing Mueller from commenting upon those items redacted in the Report, while they’d be free to run wild on Steele, Strzok/Page, and Hillary. Instead, it’s left them looking like fools by pressing him for answers on things he can’t comment on. It hasn’t really done much for the plodding fashion the Dems have gone about this hearing.

David Corn:

“Russia attacked, and Trump denied the attack happened—which provided cover for Moscow—yet attempted to benefit from it. This is a profound act of betrayal. It is the essence of the scandal: A presidential candidate aiding and abetting an assault on the United States.”

292
jaunte  Jul 24, 2019 • 9:19:47am

“…Mueller finished his opening statement by remarking, “Over the course of my career, I’ve seen a number of challenges to our democracy. The Russian government’s effort to interfere in our election is among the most serious.” This could well be taken as criticism of Trump. After all, the president has never accepted this. Doing so would force Trump to acknowledge his own wrongdoing and affirm questions about the legitimacy of the election that landed him in the White House.

A US election was hijacked. Trump stood by as it happened and profited from it. And ever since he has attempted to cover up this original sin of his presidency. At the hearing, Mueller did not rail about Trump’s serious misconduct. But in the quiet way of an institutionalist who respects norms and rules, Mueller made it clear: Trump engaged in treachery. This is not news. But it remains a defining element of the Trump presidency that deserves constant attention.”

The point of impeachment hearings is to gather the evidence for the charges to be laid.

If the GOP wants to go all partisan in the Senate, hang around the necks of every Republican up for election that they were presented with the evidence and they chose criminal over country.

Moreover, an impeachment hearing now runs into campaign season.

It took two years to get to the point of an insignificant break-in at a Washington hotel until Nixon resigned, and he still had the crasification factor of conservatives supporting him.

When millions of people are in the streets, day in and day out, the media calculations of “what will drive ratings” was based on factors that do not apply today.

Also, there was no cable TV in 1973; there was 3 networks subject to the Fairness Doctrine, and a handful of independent stations in big cities that mostly did old movies and sitcom reruns. Every city had multiple newspapers.

It was also before the rise of right-wing AM talk radio.

On substance, Democrats got what they wanted: that Mueller didn’t charge Pres. Trump because of the OLC guidance, that he could be indicted after he leaves office, among other things. But on optics, this was a disaster

And in our New Media Reality, optics is all that counts…

332
Anymouse 🌹🎃  Jul 24, 2019 • 9:52:16am

In the Federalist Papers, Publius argued that there might come a day where there is a corrupt Senate loathe to convict a sitting president (or judge or member of the cabinet they’d previously confirmed). Publius argued that the House should move forward with an impeachment enquiry anyway, and if they found sufficient evidence to hold a trial, send it to the Senate anyway.

House members have a bully pulpit as well.

Since the Constitution was adopted, over ninety various officials have been impeached aside from presidents, most removed by the Senate after a trial.

He didn’t want to provide video that could be used in a campaign ad. He didn’t want to be on camera speaking a sentence that could be made to look like a random opinion or an overtly partisan view, especially when edited together with another sentence or two from another part of the hearing.

That’s why so many of his answers were a simple “yes” or “no”.

Sorry, but there shouldn’t be a “yeah, but” reaction. To even discuss “optics”—which isn’t about the facts—when Mueller said that the only reason Trump wasn’t indicted was OLC policy is journalistic malpractice. It’s a shitty attempt to hand the GOP something. The idea that it needed to look good in some fashion in order to be a win for the DNC is ridiculous.

Hearing it live, Mueller said what he said, and it was honest. I think he realized what happened as Lieu continued his questioning (and even later), and then tried to clarify because, for some reason, he is pathologically incapable of putting his thumb on the scale.

But here’s what kills me about it—if the situation was somehow reversed—if he made a first statement that condemned a Democrat and then tried to retract it—no one in the media would say boo. They’d role with the “I’d have convicted but for OLC policy”.

What made it all so memorable is that up to that moment, we’d been watching Batty murder his way through dystopian L.A.

But in the closing moments of his life, he is moved by a sense of mercy and kinship to save his foe, and we certainly have to question if Deckard would’ve done the same…..and Deckard probably wouldn’t have.

In those last moments, Roy Batty truly becomes “more human than human” - which is what makes Hauer’s performance one for the ages. He was a villain, to be sure, but in the end, a sympathetic one, perhaps more an anti-hero than a traditional bad guy.

We are saying it is. Mueller is sorta yes, but maybe not….refer to my report, I’m, not going not clear up ambivalence

Except their wasn’t ambivalence. In Lieu’s line of questioning, Mueller specifically agreed that Trump undertook obstructive acts; that it occurred after it was known that there was an official proceeding in place; and his report clearly said he did so with requisite intent—those are the elements of obstruction. (He also repeatedly stated that it didn’t matter whether the subordinates actually followed through for there to be obstruction). There was no maybe anything—and that’s without his specific response to whether he would have indicted but for OLC policy.

He is going to great lengths to seem neutral and unassailable.

Why? A judge should be neutral. Prosecutors have opinions. This is not the time to be an enigma.

And refused to agree with that characterization in earlier questioning. I really dont fucking know what he believes at this point as far as whether POTUS committed and a criminal act.

I don’t really know what to tell you, because it’s fairly irrelevant what Mueller “believes” as to the facts of his investigation. The only thing I know is that he doesn’t want his testimony today to be used as a weapon by either side. The report is pretty clear, and Lieu walked him through it, while tying it to the elements of obstruction, in a very clear way.

“If you choose not to choose, then you have made a choice”, resounds the voice of Geddy Lee, who could be heard at any time of day or night from at least a half-dozen towel-stuffed doors in the McNutt dormitory at Indiana University back in 1976…

Heh. I remember many house parties in the 80s, where I would desperately try to avoid being cornered by the wire-rimmed glasses dude who would drunkenly try to spend the rest of the night explaining the sheer genius of Geddy Lee to me …

What would be the modern equivalent of Rush’s “intellectual metal” these days? Godsmack? Guided by Voices?

RIP Rutger Hauer.

I gave my spouse a beautiful dark blue hood jacket with a dove flying in the rain and Roy Batty’s famous “all those moments will be lost like tears in rain” quote on it.

One of the most moving soliloquies in cinema.

It’s a circular argument, which begins by begging at least one question, and no, the author does not know what fallacy he has committed. Even Aquinas would be laughing his ass off at that attempt at scholasticism.

Based on how these hearings have gone so far, I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out this was like Police Academy 3, with Mueller getting a blowjob from a random hooker under the desk while he’s trying to testify. It’s the only thing I can think of, short of early dementia, for why he is as bad at this as he is.

Someone needs to explain to Mueller that his job is done being a neutral party. His allegience now should be toward the truth, whatever biases for or against Trump that leads to.

Serious question: did you listen to the entirety of the Lieu - Mueller exchange? My point is that it doesn’t matter that he is trying to retract his statement that OLC Policy was all that kept him from indicting. Lieu made the case based on the Report and Mueller’s testimony prior to that.

unless we learn he was fundamentally hindered from carrying out his duties (short of so many people lying to him) - ie Barr told him to ‘wrap it up’ or something, his report is as close to truth as we’ll get.

his ‘allegiance’ should be to ensuring the report is accurately represented and characterized.

Just once, I’d kind of like the chairman to go through a detailed rebuttal of whatever Collins just said (I can’t stand to listen to these things) and then ask, “So, would the gentle lady from Maine like to apologize to us for being a lying skank?”

This is a House hearing, Susan Collins is a senator. In other words, she’s not there.

re: #298 sagehen

When millions of people are in the streets, day in and day out, the media calculations of “what will drive ratings” was based on factors that do not apply today.

Also, there was no cable TV in 1973; there was 3 networks subject to the Fairness Doctrine, and a handful of independent stations in big cities that mostly did old movies and sitcom reruns. Every city had multiple newspapers.

The Chicago Tribune and Milwaukee Journal did not give favorable coverage to civil rights and antiwar marchers. Supported Nixon. Can’t speak to other cities like Cleveland Boston Houston etc.
