Somehow it turns into “Brick House,” because of course it does.

From Kolob:

re: #376 mmmirele

We have “county islands”, that is, 55+ communities inside city limits but outside the city and school districts. Personally, I hate “county islands” in general because they’re outside the tax base, but I am amused at the pot dispensaries which have opened up within this very conservative, Mormon-dominated city because they’re actually on county islands.

re: #380 Anymouse 🌹

Yikes on the Mormons. When I lived in Liberty, Mo., I lived one block from the old Liberty Jail/Mormon Church.

Frequently the folks in Salt Lake City would send people to Liberty for missionary training. The church knew who the atheist was a couple buildings away, so I was constantly running them off my property.

I only lived there for about a year; a tornado destroyed my house (which I had just gotten into with friends) and made me homeless (again).

re: #381 7-y (Expectation of Great Things in Due Course)

Back in the 1980s my wife was director of the Ford Employe Fitness Center in Dearborn, that’s right, “employe” without the double e ending. Ford HQ tried for years and years to get everyone to drop the extra e because someone had projected that could save them money.

Didn’t take. 🤔

Ford paid someone to come up with the idea that intentionally misspelling a word would save them money?

This is why I can’t get rich. I can’t think of ways to grift from companies and douchecanoes. (That, and ethics.)

Did anyone explain how dropping the extra “e” would save money?

A few years ago I worked for a company that was having its parking lot re-painted. They asked the painter if they could make a half stripe instead of the full stripe one would normally see in any parking lot. They abandoned the idea as soon as the painter told them it would cost double the normal price since it was a special order.

Pretty sure that with painting and printing, ink and paint are not that relevant in the final cost. Beyond all the other stupid shit.

Hah. The painter would need to make a special screen to make the stripe half-width.

I presume the company wanted to save on billing for paint.

They don’t bother with painting parking lots around here much, other than handicap spaces.

In my town, no parking is painted (unpaved streets and lots), though there are two reserved handicapped spots at the village hall. (Parking is parallel on the street except those two spaces, which are perpendicular to the street and along the sidewalk going into the hall.)

Think of when they make those 3D letters used to label locations. It’s not going to save much at a company like Ford, but then again, the MCI CEO suggested turning out the lights at night to save the company money when the telecom crash occurred.

Can’t vouch for whether it’s true, but in the 80s when I went to Houston to visit my sister, I commented on how narrow the lanes on Westheimer Road were. It was her understanding that when the population exploded and more lanes were needed, they just repainted them to make four out of three. It was a pretty scary driving experience for me.

Apparently lying on the White House Proclamations page.

Yesterday I noted that Donald Trump had not put out the annual proclamation for Korean War Veterans Armistice Day (such proclamations are usually put out the day before an event, and I have all the various patriotic holidays and military commemorations on my calendar in Outlook so I’m reminded when they come up, so I was looking for it yesterday).

So it’s up today, backdated to yesterday.

And of course he made it about him:

Last month, when I walked across the military demarcation line that runs through the Demilitarized Zone, it was the first time a sitting United States President has ever entered into the territory of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. I hope these steps will spur progress in the ongoing effort to achieve the complete and verifiable denuclearization of North Korea, establish a permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula, and continue the recovery and repatriation of remains of fallen American soldiers.

They have done that on the I30 bridge across lake Ray Hubbard, going from three to four lanes Their next goal over the next decade is to build frontage road bridges, an additional two lane bridge on each side.

Well, he did mention the valour of those who fought in Korea before that paragraph:

The dedication stone at the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., bears the inscription: “Our Nation honors her sons and daughters who answered the call to defend a country they never knew and a people they never met.” The memorial includes an honor roll of Americans killed in action and those missing in action, and its unique design features statues of a patrol crossing a Korean rice paddy. These figures represent the heroes of our Armed Forces who valiantly served in the Land of the Morning Calm and fought on battlefields such as Inchon, the Pusan Perimeter, and the Chosin Reservoir. Today, this hauntingly beautiful memorial stands as an enduring reminder of what it costs to defend and preserve the democratic principles we hold dear.

Our ironclad alliance with the Republic of Korea was cemented when the first American troops arrived on its soil to fight for liberty and human dignity. More than six decades after the ceasefire on the Korean Peninsula, the Republic of Korea is flourishing as a prosperous and peace-loving democracy. Since the signing of the armistice at Panmunjom, the United States has worked with the Republic of Korea to preserve peace through strength. Our military, together with our allies, stands vigilant, strong, and “ready to fight tonight” on the ground, in the air, and at sea. The phrase “katchi kapshida” — “we go together” — is on the lips of every service member in Korea, representing generations of Koreans and Americans united by shared sacrifice and a willingness to uphold the cause of freedom no matter the cost.

So the fantastic thing about Disney is that they let you bring in all sorts of outside food. If her kid was over-tired and hungry, that’s some poor planning on her part. I’d further add that at 3, the parents should still have a stroller for long days. We had that when we had our 3 year old on some long walking days in Europe.

I’d be surprised if any of that money actually goes toward a wall, fence, or a single camera. My guess it’s going to disappear.

As others have mentioned here before, even with an expedited “national emergency,” building such a huge structure across over a thousand miles would require engineering studies, land surveys, environmental studies (though I imagine the grifters in the maladministration could find a way around those), likely lawsuits over eminent domain (there are still lawsuits going on over GW Bush’s fence extensions).

There is no way such a project could be finished. So the blame goes to the Democrats, saying they held him up from building his wall (becoming a campaign plank again).

It is chilling that SCOTUS approves this. Where will they stop? Doesn’t this in effect say that the President can override laws passed by congress and distribute funding however he pleases?

The packing of the judiciary with RW thugs may prevent us from surviving the damage the GOP is inflicting on this nation. Remember that 4 SC justices were on board with the citizenship question. The judiciary will continue to support voter suppression, gerrymandering, and voter disenfranchisement to preserve a white Christian majority and unless we can throw them all out in 2020, there may be no recovery from the evil we are experiencing.

Considering people travel to go to protests, that might not work. They’re already situating concentration camps in red states.

Me, my brothers, my middle brother’s husband and my mom (all grown-ass folks) all went to Orlando a few years ago and made the run on all of the Disney parks (except Hollywood Studios) and Universal Studios; I’ll never do that again, especially at the pace we did (at least a park a day), but I had a good time.

I don’t get why GOP politicians haven’t set him aside yet. They can get everything they want from Pence.

Self-proclaimed Christian “prophet” Mark Taylor has a fantastic track record when it comes to his predictions.

For example, last year he predicted that Hillary Clinton would have turned churches into mosques had she been president, and that’s obviously true, right?

So you might be surprised to see what Taylor is forecasting now.

Taylor is now claiming that Trump is just biding his time before doing all the good stuff. He’s focused on rooting out corruption in Big Pharma right now, but during his second term, he’s going to announce cures for cancer and Alzheimer’s.

In a series of tweets on Saturday, July 27, President Donald Trump went on a tirade against one of his fiercest critics and one of Congress’s leading black members, U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings, a Democrat who represents Maryland’s 7th congressional district, which includes a large swath of Baltimore.

Trump called Cummings, who is also the chairman of House Oversight and Reform Committee, a “brutal bully,” adding that Baltimore is a “very dangerous and filthy place.” Earlier this month in a congressional hearing, Cummings had criticized the U.S. Border Patrol’s treatment of migrant children in government-run detainment centers near the U.S.-Mexico border. In his tweets, Trump said that Cummings should not be “shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous. His district is considered the Worst in the USA……”

Cummings defended himself on Twitter, responding to Trump with, “Mr. President, I go home to my district daily. Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors. It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents.”

Among those who came out in support of Cummings is beloved Baltimore artist and filmmaker John Waters, whose famous film Hairspray is considered a love letter to the city. In an email to ARTnews, Waters said, “Give me the rats and roaches of Baltimore any day over the lies and racism of your Washington, Mr Trump. Come on over to that neighborhood and see if you have the nerve to say it in person!”

The idea being that the gullible will read between the lines and decide that the only way such cures can happen is if Donny gets a second term, otherwise a Democrat will put the kibosh on them and damn all those people suffering to Hell. Idaho Republican legislators letting their racism flag fly, for freedom.

Idaho Republican Explains ‘Diversity’ Is Bad For America, Because Cows (Wonkette)

Republicans in the Idaho legislature have been mad about diversity lately, after the interim president of Boise State University said in a June newsletter that diversity and inclusion were good things, and outlined a few things the university was doing to promote a diverse student body and faculty. A rightwing group, the Idaho Freedom Foundation, angrily denounced the newsletter as a shocking attempt to “pander to leftist ideologues with radical views of ‘inclusivity.’”

That was followed by a letter written by state Rep. Barbara Ehardt informing BSU’s incoming president Marlene Trompf that the newsletter was “disconcerting” because it didn’t “reflect Idaho values.” Twenty-seven other Republican House members signed on to Ehardt’s letter, which listed a whole bunch of diversity things that are definitely not good for Idaho, because as anyone knows, diversity is actually very divisive and racist!

This drive to create a diversified and inclusive culture becomes divisive and exclusionary because it separates and segregates students.

Yes, diversity is segregation. Betcha she’s a Christian too. Ignorance is strength, also.

She goes on in her letter to list a whole bunch of other things which she believes are “segregation.” Diversity is the new Jim Crow.

Twenty-seven other Republican legislators signed on to that letter. (more at the link, including the rest of the things she thinks are “segregation”)
