Even if so, so what. It’s not a fucking contest. Never saw Obama talk shit about how the military regarded him. This guy, no one in his family has ever served loves the idea of the military worshipping him.

Abolish ICE… terminate everyone who works for the agency and put them on a DO NOT HIRE list. Create a new agency with strict background checks and comprehensive training and zero tolerance for violating civil rights.

The point of course being to skeer tough-guy conservatives into voting for the party which will “do something” about Sharia law.

It doesn’t matter conservatives couldn’t define Sharia law if their lives depended on it, besides non-sensical Pamela Geller points like “taqiyya!1uno1!11!!dos!!!%£!!.”

Biblical laws are very similar to Sharia law, but they have no problem with making those laws in a nation specifically founded on a secular constitution.

When my wife and I lived in Oklahoma, the state put a constitutional referendum on the ballot to outlaw Sharia law along with decisions made in other state courts from being used in Oklahoma courts.

It was a cover for a racist “English Only” amendment pushed by one of John Tanton’s groups (the two clauses were part of the same amendment; pass the Sharia law amendment, get the English-only.)

The Tulsa World the next day came out with an entire edition printed in Cherokee and delivered it to all their subscribers.

Universities and academics all came out against the English-only part noting that much funding for them comes from foreigners in Oklahoma, and it would crush the university system if they couldn’t use state funds to print foreign-language recruiting materials (along with Native language recruiting materials).

The local press did a good job of highlighting the Sharia portion of the amendment was actually a stalking horse for the English-only section, and the amendment went down by a wide margin.

The very first CD I bought was after I got out of the Navy (the first time), in 1984. It was “Abba’s Greatest Hits Vol. 2.” I still have that CD.

The last LP I bought was in the Nineties when I was stationed in Spain, Enya’s “Watermark” I still have that LP and a mechanical license to record one of the songs from that album, “Lothlórien.” I’m possibly the only person who ever licensed it, for my long-playing short-selling album. If he keeps ranting about Baltimore, he will.

Also waiting on the cringe take from him about the mass-murder in Philadelphia tonight. Wingnuts are already trying to discount it as “gang violence” (read ni*CLANG).

Depending on who the shooters were at the Garlic festival, I imagine Trump will issue some sort of proclamation in respect for the dead and injured (and possibly a half-staff notice for the flag) if they are minority members or especially immigrants. He’ll ignore it if they’re white guys.

New Tampax High-Speed Applicator Able To Launch Tampons Into Vagina At 500 MPH (goes to The Onion, with a photo of the laser-sighted semi-automatic tampon applicator)

NEW YORK—Touting the state-of-the-art device as a major time-saver for women, Procter & Gamble debuted a high-speed Tampax applicator Friday capable of launching tampons into the human vagina at speeds of up to 500 miles per hour. “Competing brands usually enter the vagina at 0.012 mph, with the resulting inefficiency you might expect, but now, thanks to the aerospace-derived advances in applicator design, women will no longer be inconvenienced by 19th century Steam Age-tampon velocities,” said marketing representative Craig Harris of the new Tampax Blaster, a titanium-and-carbon-fiber unit which comes pre-loaded with 12 tampons in the magazine and is capable of hitting the vaginal canal with 90% accuracy under optimal conditions.

Dominionists certainly would.

There is a pair of cringy Millenial YouTubers named Paul and Morgan who argue for Dominionist law. Besides coming under constant attack from atheists over their cringy videos and deeply anti-Constitutional views, they will sometimes go after low-hanging fruit (Morgan) because her arms are covered in tattoos.

Such people never think their laws will affect them, only those “other people” (non-Christians).

You may have noticed most flight trackers don’t show military aircraft, which is good. I found one that does. Virtual Radar. It is a bit flakey and note the link to the right side on clearing a blank map. You go to the map with the Global Radar View link at the top. One thing I noticed is the military aircraft disappear for a few minutes at a time.

The Internet is so cool.

“Racists are uncomfortable with their race; they’d really rather be black” doesn’t work either.

Sometimes anti-geyh is just anti-geyh. Conservatism always needs an “other” to hate, and LGBT people are always a convenient minority throughout history.

One Christian apologetic argument is “Nazis were secretly homosexuals.” That explains why they sent so many LGBT to concentration camps.

One Christian apologetic argument is “Nazis were secretly homosexuals.” That explains why they sent so many LGBT to concentration camps.

They have the ridiculous argument largely because of Ernst Röhm, who was (IIRC) pretty much openly gay - and Hitler had no problems with that (well, until he had Röhm bumped off at the Army’s insistence. Then all of sudden, Hitler was shocked…..SHOCKED….to find out about Röhm and another fellow, another high-ranking SA member, though his name eludes me now). Indeed, Röhm was the only person who addressed Hitler with the familiar “du” (informal ‘you’), which tells me that Hitler and Röhm were good personal friends (again, right up until Hitler had him whacked).

They vote for those candidates. That was the driving force behind all the flurry of anti-marriage equality bills and amendments in the 2010 race, to scare conservative voters into voting against “Big Geyh.”

I don’t care what their rationalisations are for voting against their fellow Americans’ rights are. All I care about is they are bigots.

They used the same arguments against abolishing slavery, women’s suffrage, interracial marriage, school desegregation, civil rights, &c, and used the Bible to justify all of it.

The majority weren’t secretly closeted people who wanted to be slaves or interracially married.

Or multiple arguments:

1) Keep pointing out they’re the racist party. Get the squishy middle off the fence (as pointed out in the ten stages of genocide above, step six includes getting rid of so-called centrists).

2) Use imagery of Republican areas as well as pointing out poverty is a nation-wide problem.

It won’t simply be food rationing, there will swiftly be rationing of medications and limitations set upon things like elective surgery to stretch the nation’s insufficient reserves while the gov’t fucks around with new trade negotiations. At the same time or shortly thereafter will be the announcement of mass layoffs as companies either owned by other EU nations or reliant upon parts/supplies from EU manufacturers are closed or forced to cope with the sudden backlog of inspections and certifications for every single import. Social order is going to suffer greatly if not utterly collapse when you have thousands to millions of Britons jobless, unable to find food, or watching their loved ones suffer in the NHS queue while the wealthy suffer no shortages or restriction of access.

There was a snark account on Facebook which was a parody of what right-wingers think about feminists.

They ran the account for two years, trolling conservatives with faked articles like “we want to eliminate men.”

They shut it down because too many of their articles wound up on right-wing blogs, FOX News, and Republican politicians’ Websites.

Greets and saluts… racist grandpa is up to his usual shitshow in the morning… more than usual.

He’s thoroughly consumed with impeachment and his executive time spills over into every waking moment. Tweets are increasingly crazy, not that his base or the GOP cares. They continue dismantling the safety net, attacking Obamacare, and trying to shift the burdens on to those least able to endure them.

It’s how the GOP operates.

Trump calls out Bernie for making racist statements. Yeah, guess what - Bernie has been called a racist, rightfully so. He is the left-wing version of Trump in so many aspects, including pandering to whites while ignoring the plight of minorities, and falling back on his march for civil rights as a defense against inaction in the intervening decades. Other Democrats speak to POC and minorities far more forcefully and eloquently and they are the conscience of the Democratic party.

But I’m fully expecting Democrats to defend Bernie here, because party needs demand it.

I fear that the only way they’ll learn is when the streets are on fire. I expect that the Tories will see this as an opportunity to “trim the fat” by aping their American cousins in demanding any persons seeking gov’t aid to take up one of the “new” jobs that have been vacated by “foreigners” who’ve left the UK.

So, two mass shootings this weekend. Yup. The only place in the world outside of active war zones or failed/failing states with the level of gun violence we see, including the mass shooting situations is here in the US.

There are some cities in Latin America with higher gun violence rates, but the reality is no where else in the first world is gun violence as prevalent as here in the US.

The easy availability of guns is the sole reason for this. We don’t have more mentally ill on per capita rates than elsewhere. The one thing that binds the gun violence is the easy availability of guns. Strong gun laws correlate to lower per capita gun death rates.

And we know that gun violence occurs everywhere, including strong gun law states like CA and NY (where the two mass shootings occurred). Guns can be obtained outside these states and brought in, and there are enough loopholes in the gun laws to allow people to have access to guns that never should be able to obtain them.

The GOP is in thrall to the NRA, so they do nothing. And the NRA is compromised by Russian money these days, so we know that they don’t have public safety in mind either.

The nation is only as safe as the weakest gun laws in the nation.

Trump usually picks on Chicago gun violence, ignoring that neighboring Indiana and Missouri have weaker gun laws, and a high percentage of guns used in crimes in Chicago were purchased outside Illinois.

Same with NY - the iron pipeline from weak gun law states starting with PA and going into VA, NC, SC, GA, and FL has been well documented.

California also has an iron pipeline from Nevada and Arizona.

The generation that lived through the Blitz and post-war food rationing are the minority, the majority are those who grew up after the Marshall Plan and Common Market totally changed the look of British cuisine. For them, war-time rationing is something they heard about from their parents or in classrooms as a negative thing about the war, rather than a sign of the indomitable spirit of the British people. This is what I always have to come back to: no matter what you think should be getting more attention in the news (and yes, Epstein, Russia, etc. all deserve no amount of attention and coverage that doesn’t amount to ‘Trump said…’), his racism is not a distraction. His attacks on opponents who just happen to be PoCs is not a distraction. His demonization of entire populations and peoples is not a distraction. It is a core part of his foundation, his ideology, and his policies. It animates almost everything about his domestic policy, as well as puts him smack dab in the mainstream of GOP thought. It pervades everything he does, and in his position means that it pervades everything about politics in general, even moreso than before.

To call it a distraction is to say it doesn’t matter. The problem is, for a wide swath of Americans who just happen to not be white, it very much matters. And it’s the kind of thing that gets dismissed by those who pretend they know better as ‘identity politics’ when those who are affected by this kind of overt racism soaking into every aspect of American discourse complain.

I mean, FFS, Carson’s literally an M.D. And as I recall, a gifted pediatric neurosurgeon.

Or even HHS. I wouldn’t have supported on principle but HUD? May as well have me teach a class on Advanced Physics. There was no logical reason to give Carson HUD and he proves it daily.

But don’t you dare call conservatives who are pro-forced birth, anti-abortion, pro-guns for everyone, anti-women’s rights supporters of “identity politics”—they’ll be indignantly insulted.

All politics is identity politics.

Something tells me that dump doesn’t actually care about Bmore and rats, and that he’s just ranting about Cummings’ subpoenas.

half sarc

That’s the reason he’s going after Cummings, but the methods he’s going about it are largely the same as he’s used for years against efforts to investigate his businesses and personal matters. As he learned from Roy Cohn, if you can’t buy off somebody, you intimidate them until they back off. In this case, he’s trying to get city and people of Baltimore to forsake Cummings, in the hope that Cummings will fear for his political future and work a deal with Donny to make the matter “go away.”

Because destroying functioning government is the DNA of the GOP.

It has nothing to do with competency to do the job. Trump has repeatedly put unqualified and incompetent people in charge of federal departments and agencies. Fealty to Trump is what is important, not the ability to do the job.

He wants yes men. He wants people telling him what he wants to hear (hence those awful cabinet meetings where everyone tells him how great Trump is), not what he needs to hear.

Especially the golfing.

Trump is golfing 2.6 times more than Obama ever did. At this rate, Trump will vastly exceed the number of times Obama golfed during his 8 years. At some points, Trump was nearly golfing 3x as often as Obama. Obama golfed 322 times in 8 years.

Trump is on pace to golf at higher rate than anyone other than Eisenhower and Wilson.

What Donald Trump literally said that day was: “40 Wall street actually was the second-tallest building in downtown Manhattan, and it was actually before the World Trade Center the tallest, and and then when they built the World Trade Center it became known as the second-tallest, and now it’s the tallest And I just spoke to my people, and they said it’s the most unbelievable sight, it’s probably seven or eight blocks away from the World Trade Center, and yet Wall Street is littered with two feet of stone and brick and mortar and steel …”

Snopes equivocates on whether Trump was bragging by putting the interview by the journalists in context.

They interviewed him right after the attack on Manhattan but before anyone knew who did it. They feel it’s reasonable when the tallest buildings in Manhattan were attacked, if another attack on Manhattan occurred they might come after the second-tallest.

The tallest buildings in Manhattan at the time of the 9/11 attacks, in rank order:

Empire State Building
Chrysler Building
70 Pine
40 Wall - that’s Trump’s building. It was superseded within months by the ESB, Chrysler, and 70 Pine in 1930-1932.

Immigration courts aren’t really courts in the constitutional sense. They are administrative hearings under the APA. And those who did not see the reason before the change, who did not see what life was like before the civil rights, women’s right or gay rights movements.

Or who did not care.

It really disgusts me how Meagan is being attacked by the right wingers in the British press.

I didn’t even realize she was black until that started. I love “Suits”, watched every episode, and was stunned when Wendell Pierce turned out to be her dad. Even now, I don’t see much resemblance between her and her mom.

The biggest tragedy will of course be Charles’ accession to the throne, I think Elizabeth is hoping to outlive him and see one of her grandsons take over…If she considered him at all competent, she would have stepped down ages ago…

I’ve also seen speculation that he really doesn’t want to be king and would abdicate. I have no idea whether there’s any truth in that or not.

What happens to the religious movement amongst a Pacific cargo cult when their god Prince Phillip dies?

The only times Trump got involved in the discussion was to claim that he could rebuild faster and bigger than anyone else. No one took him seriously. No one.

1. Tribal society- Emphasize family ties and patriarchal structure, use 3000 year old documents written by superstitious shepherds.
2. Belief in primitive magic, ie prayer can cure leukemia.
3. Confused and frightened when confronted by rapid technological and social change.
4. Failure to understand scientific origin of “cargo,” believing the earth to be just 6000 years old while burning refined petroleum products in their SUVs and using computers, for example.
5. Belief that sacred “cargo” is divinely ordained for benefit of believers.
6. Absurd and comically inept attempts to mimic the behavior of those perceived to be more blessed; American servicemen in the Pacific, millionaires and major entrepreneurs in the modern USA, for example.

353
lawhawk  Jul 29, 2019 • 8:50:04am

I called it back in 2005. Trump was trying to grift and scam by claiming he could build bigger even as he was scaling back efforts to build a skyscraper in Chicago.

Mr. Carley said he was preparing for a tough fight in Chicago to get his tower approved but did not expect its height to be a chief concern - even though he currently has approval only to build two structures of 300 feet and 500 feet. Donald J. Trump had plans for a 150-story building in Chicago but cut it back to 90 stories shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Mr. Carley dismissed Mr. Trump’s decision as a reaction to the soft commercial market, but Mr. Trump said the reason was security. “Nobody in his right mind would build a building of that height in today’s horrible world,” he said in a telephone interview on Monday.

“I don’t think this is a real project,” Mr. Trump said of the Fordham Spire. “It’s a total charade.”

Trump recently got behind a plan to rebuild the Twin Towers that was put forth by Kenneth Gardner and Herbert Belton. Something doesn’t quite add up here. I know that Trump is a glory-whore, but his statements would appear to undercut his stance on rebuilding the Twin Towers at Ground Zero. I think this needs further investigation.

It was totally a transparent headline effort - get in the press and be seen as someone who could build at the WTC while everything was still in limbo, but the reality is he never had a coherent plan or vision for anything beyond himself in the press.

He had no credibility among anyone who was involved in the process.

354
lawhawk  Jul 29, 2019 • 8:55:10am

re: #353 lawhawk

At that time, I also posted that Trump getting involved might potentially help since he was notorious for jawboning others into doing what he wanted. That compared with Steve Cuozzo at the NY Post who thought it was a spectacularly bad idea.

Turns out everyone who was involved in the decision making at the WTC complex ignored Trump. He was a nonentity in the rebuilding, and for good reason. As slow as the rebuilding efforts were (and they are still ongoing going on 18 years later), Trump had nothing to offer anyone.

IOW, Trump’s full of shit - as usual.

Richard Alles, a retired deputy chief with the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), who now serves as director of 9/11 community affairs for the law firm Barasch McGarry Salzman and Penson, told us that in all the hours, days and months he spent at Ground Zero as an FDNY battalion chief starting 20 minutes after the buildings collapsed, he never witnessed a large group of workers hired by Trump at the site helping with search and rescue. “This is the first I’m hearing of it,” Alles told us by phone. “There would have been no need for that. Between police, fire and the construction crews, we had it all covered.”

Alles added that the construction crews he saw at Ground Zero who came to help rescue workers were from the trade unions and were not hired by Trump.

John Feal, founder of the 9/11 first responder health advocacy non-profit the FealGood Foundation, responded to Ground Zero on 12 September 2001 as a construction demolitions expert. He also told us he didn’t see evidence of hundreds of workers hired by Trump at the site, and added that by 15 September 2001 the area was on lock down. “There was no way anyone could get in and out of there without a [government-issued] badge,” he told us. (Feal was forced off the site as of 17 September 2001 when he suffered a life-threatening injury caused by a 4-ton piece of steel falling on his foot, crushing it and resulting in a major infection.)

Yep. It’s sad. Definitely thousands of other LGBT Brazilians I’ll tske before Glenn.

There is a real danger that RW forces could make Greenwald the lynchpin of a massive anti-gay progrom.

And many people grasp that, and have learned how to manipulate it on FB and twitland. This also needs to be taken seriously. Putin took an election with it.

I think we will eventually learn that Putin’s work as a KGB officer had a lot to do with the success of his influence campaign many years later. His job was monitoring western media. He was able to do this from a point of view that was relatively free of western class prejudice. This would give him a highly developed skill at spotting trends and opportunities that others would tend to ignore.

I may not think much of Greenwald because of his politics and how they leak into his journalism, but in the context of Brazil the way he’s being targeted should make us all worry. With all of these new reactionary/authoritarian governments, the things they’re throwing out onto social media are like…market research…of what they actually intend to implement generally.

He definitely was more informed than the average KGB man let alone Russian how to manipulate public opinion. I’d love Vlad to end up like Milosevic did.

Putin studied how Obama won in 2012. Obama used FB very well. One of Obama’s strengths was doing more with less money. Putin was able to do more with MORE money.

There was an analogous situation in Germany in the 1920s. Nazi theoreticians recognized and exploited the virulent anti-semitism of the working and lower middle classes at a time when the press and intellectuals liked to pretend it either didn’t exist or wasn’t serious if it did.

Caban is going to continue fighting after barely winning the initial count. It went to an automatic recount, and after the tallies of absentees and provisionals, Katz came out ahead by the slimmest of margins.

Whoever wins will likely dominate in the fall general election.

@JoyAnnReid
Honest question: why was it OK for people to openly speculate about Robert Mueller’s potential age-related decline based on the way he spoke one time, but a big taboo to ask the same about Donald Trump?

If, as reported above, his Teleprompter displays only 3-4 words at a time, it’s no wonder that he mispronounces words — reading smoothly and correctly requires seeing words in context and there is no context unless you can view the entire sentence. This is especially true when this is the first time you are seeing the statement. Does anyone really believe Trump wastes time reviewing a speech in advance of a presentation?

So, a thing happened this weekend. I was at a water park with my family. My wife points out a 30-something guy with several tattoos. In the center of his back was a swastika, with the phrase “Pure White” running down his spine and over the swastika. On his chest was a Nazi eagle. Just below that, on either side of his mid drift was 14 and 88. There were several other tattoos, that I am sure involved Nazi imagery, but nothing I was familiar with. Guy was a straight up Nazi.

I didn’t say anything, and to my knowledge, no one else did either. I don’t like the idea of someone like that being able to go out into public without backlash. On the other hand, getting into a fight in front of my wife and 5 year old son wasn’t high on my list either (the risk of which certainly increases upon confrontation).

Don’t really feel great about not having said anything.

This seems like a strawman to me. How is it taboo to question Trumps faculties. I see people do it all the time, How often has the 25th amendment been invoked in regards to Trump. Sure he has his sycophants that will defend him, but I don’t see anyone getting shunned or losing their jobs over it.

I’m losing the drift on the entire “Keep your insurance/Medicare for all” issue. I’ve been on Medicare for about 15 years, and in all of that time we’ve backed it up with my old employment-based plan. (Mainly because we don’t trust the polititians not to leave us high and dry.)

lawhawk  Jul 29, 2019 • 10:13:15am

re: #425 Decatur Deb

Most of this is spin by different plan proponents.

Some plans would have a M4A as the foundation plan. You could then have an employer superimposed plan that goes beyond what M4A does.

Other proposals would do away with the private insurers and roll them into administrators of M4A (or similar notion) so as to maximize efficiencies within the medical practice since medical billing to insurers is too complex, and you could see cost savings in that area alone.

Hybrid plans, replacement plans, or, as the GOP are offering up - no plan.

re: #388 Hecuba’s daughter

The Grover Norquist mantra: “I don’t want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub.”

If Exxon and BP decide that demolishing the fishing industry is no big deal if it saves them 5% on their drilling costs… don’t you want a government big enough and strong enough to stop them?

If a couple of coal mine owners are willing to poison all the water in West Virginia to save a few bucks on properly reinforcing the slough ponds… don’t you want a government big enough and strong enough to stop them?

If Walmart and Amazon/Whole Foods wants to outlaw supermarkets, or grain exports, so you can only buy from them and farmers can only sell to them at whatever price they decide… don’t you want a government big enough and strong enough to say “NO!”?

Weak governments that let a few of the biggest businesses make all the decisions is pretty much the definition of a banana republic.

I get that; here’s the thing.

Democrats put thought into their proposals. They think them through. Sure, there are holes and issues with the plans, but it addresses the criticism that they aren’t dealing with policy.

The script gets flipped and people complain that the plans are too dense and complicated. They prefer vaporware and elect Trump who had no plan and no substance to anything he said.

The media criticisms seem especially focused on the women in the race, while Trump gets a pass on everything that pops in his head.

I am agreeing with you. Sorry if I implied otherwise. The top two women are offering real solutions, and the critique is now “they are too detailed.” I do quesiton how they hope to implement their plans, but it’s the same question that could be asked of any of the candidates, not just those with established plans.

No need for the nevertheless.

We should be leaning in to the idea that not only was Hitler a manchild and aggressively mediocre, but his rise through fascist ranks was in part because he was able to rhetorically inflame the emotionally-constipated-chimpanzee failson qualities of his followers, many of whom were smarter than he.

I mean, he was an adult man fixated on Karl May westerns and Wagner.
