Typical. CNN isn’t making any streaming video available. So here’s an open thread to discuss tonight’s debate for those who wish to partake.

I did have a stray thought, though…

We have a President admired by David Duke. I’m no leftist but this country could move to the left on economics and it would do it some good. It would be a good wake up call to those who think what the left wants is akin to Venezuela.

re: #477 BeachDem

Yeah, I’ll go even further. Some of the ones I know aren’t even wacky. They’re solid, normal Dems, but they’ve fallen under Marianne’s thrall for some strange reason.

We have our own version of “we need an outsider” voters, and Marianne Williamson is about as outside as you can get.

I don’t either. I just don’t get why anyone would want someone who has never worked in government or law in charge. Like maybe I could understand wanting her in Congress but even then I would be hesitant.

Off topic:
The Walmart spud-pisser has been captured!
Police pop woman who peed on potatoes in Walmart

Police have nabbed the woman who peed in a bin of potatoes in a western Pennsylvania Walmart last Wednesday. A store employee spotted the tot mama in the act and immediately notified law enforcement.

The curly-haired brunette was captured on surveillance video entering the store — and the West Mifflin Borough Police Department posted screen grabs to its Twitter and website.

“Identification assistance — Walmart Incident,” cops captioned the images in a call for the community to help expose public enemy No. 1.

The shamed spud soaker, a k a Grace Brown, 20, turned herself in Tuesday.

A confession:
I have from time to time uttered the words “piss on Walmart.” I regret that anyone has chosen to take this admonition literally.

Grosse Pointe is very wealthy and full of conservatives. The mayor is a Republican.

Rick Snyder would never have fouled up Grosse Pointe’s water supply like he did Flint’s. I’m sure there must be a reason for that, if I can put my finger on the colour.

Those are Trump’s talking points. He takes credit for all the jobs (actually created by Obama’s stimulus) and all the money (that the 1% are making)

Using those talking points is worthless unless you want to spend your entire time refuting Trump’s lies, which of course get repeated and that’s exactly what he wants.

We know the older a person is, the more likely they are to vote.

The 2018 election saw a huge wave of younger voters turn out to help with the Blue Wave.

Promoting a culture of voting every time in every election would drive a stake in the GOP.

You see the same sort of avoidance with jury duty (except that’s amongst most people, not just young people).

Civic responsibility is something we need to instill again. There’s a reason the GOP has long opposed civics in schools.

I disagree with Soledad. Policy is not a winning strategy.

For quite some time now, American elections for the President is all about image.

First, notice what Williamson didn’t say in her apology tweet. By affirming that “many vaccines are important,” she implied that some conventional ones are not—most importantly the MMR (measles mumps rubella) vaccine, which has been found to be effective and safe by every single scientifically valid study ever conducted about it, but which was found to be unsafe by a single non-specialist whose medical license was subsequently revoked, who committed deliberate fraud, and whose completely invalid study was retracted by the journal that published it.

Second, Williamson blamed “Big Pharma,” conflating vaccines approved by (once again) every reputable scientific and medical organization on the planet with Purdue pharma’s latest opiate. This is straight out of the anti-vaxx conspiracy playbook.

Third, Williamson didn’t disclaim her ludicrous abortion analogy. This, once again, is pure left-wing anti-vaxx conspiracy nonsense: that just as we should respect a woman’s choice to have an abortion, so we should respect parents’ choice not to vaccinate their kids.

I’ve dealt with that crook. She makes Trump look like St. Francis!

Yup. If the brain-dead anti-vaxxer mom who brought her child 4-H Christmas caroling at my house in 2011, I might not have nearly died from a repeat case of the mumps.

And when the new Shingrix vaccine became available? My wife and I were on that. Damn skippy.

(When I was signing out from the pharmacy for the first shot, there was a guy there complaining about how his vaccine cost so much money - Shingrix isn’t cheap if you pay out-of-pocket. The clerk working with me just said “sign here, no charge.” I asked her why so many people are opposed to single-payer healthcare and the guy looked like he was going to kill me in the parking lot.)

Certainly I am a grouchy curmudgeon these days.

Fundamentally, for-profit corporations like Time-Warner want to capture eyes, to sell advertisement.

You get eyes on product by generating controversy.

And then when it comes to elections, for all the complaining some people do about money in elections, to where does that money flow?

To corporations like Time-Warner.

Until we have a law which requires 100% disclosure of the source of all campaign advertisements, and that includes PACs, then we won’t have fundamental changes.

Both my wife’s mother and my mother had polio. Her mother was confined to a wheelchair her whole life. My mother was fortunate in that she recovered fully and was able to join the Navy.

Now however she is suffering from post-polio syndrome.

I’ve had chickenpox twice (once as a child, once in the Navy in 1993). My barrels are not as big as yours, but I’ll fire back as well.

If the Fed goes ahead and cuts the interest rate a quarter point tomorrow as expected, I’ll be pleased that its finally facing the reality that inflation is flat on its back and there are still a lot of prime age Americans without jobs despite the 3.7% official unemployment rate. It should have been more aggressive in fighting unemployment over the previous decade, but better late than never.
