we have entire industries whose entire business model is based on access to a large pool of cheap, easily exploited workers, starting with agriculture, food packing & processing, food service, hotel, resort and domestic service, janitorial services, construction, gardening and landscaping…
And amazingly, there’s an entire political party—supported by what may be a majority of the white population and by far too great a percentage even if not the majority—that believes said workers aren’t cheap or easily-exploited enough because the standard of living for an American proletarian is higher than that of a Brazilian one, let alone Chinese or Bangladeshi.

Was going to write my thoughts on the debates, but Hank Stuever captured them pretty well:
Having subjected us to two nights of garishly adorned, overproduced, conflict-obsessed live “debates” among a field of 20 Democratic hopefuls (its own delusional gridlock of egos), CNN and the Democratic National Committee summoned the worst aspects of some of TV’s most popular genres and visual tropes.
The overall tone, of course, was cable-news alarmism, but the debates also resembled those celebrity-packed, prime-time game shows that litter the schedule all summer. One also got wafts of the blaring bombast of professional football broadcasts, and, yes, the stage-managed awkwardness of the lesser styles of reality TV…
CNN’s format facilitated a frenetic game of human darts, with questions designed to goad the jabbing. It was a never-ending two-night competition of lightning rounds, in 30- and 15-second rebuttals to one-minute answers…
we were watching CNN make television — pieces and bites and clips of which it can repurpose into more programming fodder, days’ worth of pundit banter, befitting the network that overhyped the event for weeks with name-drawings, a countdown clock and relentless reminders to watch…
My additional thoughts: In addition to breathing life into and way too much post-debate attention to ridiculous people who never should have been on the stage in the first place, it gave fringers opportunity to chip away at actual potential candidates, feeding right into the Republicans’ hands.
Whoever agreed to the CNN format and even more egregiously, set the bar so fucking low that anyone with a heartbeat could make the cut, should really be called out for some horrible decisions.
At least that’s my take—YMMV.

Still another way of saying that is it’s a 10% tax on imports that Americans are paying.
Still another way of saying that is it’s a 10% tax that more than wipes out the supposed benefits of the TCJA that a majority of Americans supposedly received.
So, while the billionaire class can have their money baths with the taxes they saved courtesy of the TCJA, everyone else is going to watch as they pay far more on imported goods from China (because they don’t have alternatives they can buy domestically).

You’d think at some point those same billionaires would realize that raising costs to consumers (who also happen to be their employees) is going to eventually hurt their bottom lines when consumers can’t buy their goods/services and their sales drop, meaning their stock values drop, meaning they lose money.

On the bright side, we have a lot of guardrails in place today that we didn’t have in 1929. Like the trading curb/circuit breakers that close trading early if the indexes go up too much or go down too much. There’s still ways the system can fail, as we saw a decade ago, but for something like the Depression to happen, I think everything would have to fail.
And let’s not forget, part of the problem in the US was the mid-west facing a thousand year drought as the economy crashed. It’s not like we have to worry about climate disasters today…

Not really. There’s been a strong “Mercantilism was sound economics” wing in the Rs since I was in high school, because the assigned mentor my counselor gave me (a senior to my, I think, sophomore) was the president of the Arapahoe High Young Republicans (yes, that one, though as I’ve pointed out on other sites, 14 years before “that event”, quite possibly due entirely to the principal we had (he retired less than a year before the rampage).
These folks think that the Sixteenth Amendment was almost as much a mistake as the Seventeenth, and proudly point out that the US wasn’t a low-tax country [when they aren’t claiming it’s an analog of the EU rather than of Germany, and thus ‘not a country at all’] before 1913, just a country that couldn’t tax individuals directly but only the products being imported. I ran into a few of the legal world equivalents of these types in my Federalist Society days. I remember more than a few people arguing that the 17th Amendment should be repealed… my former con law professor used to argue that “States qua States” should matter. And was very much in the fight to restore the Lochner-era. As if a pre-industrial constitutional frame work would actually work for a post-industrial society.
If the tax rate was slightly higher and every person and company paid what they are supposed be paying, we’d have a lot more money for things we didn’t have before.

Do they expect the parties/candidates to put their concerns above other sections of the population? If they vote for Republicans again out of Fox-fueled resentment that they aren’t being catered to, then yes, very sadly I expect them to see the same results.

My wife had to clean her previous husband off from ferrofluid. He got it in his hair, in his clothes, the carpets, and even the ceiling. (She was out of the house when he did that.)
He’d read on-line that Goop would take it off, so that made it worse.

Thunderstorm warnings going up to my west and north now. All storms moving very slowly and dumping large amounts of rain.
Fortunately the North Platte River has gone down a bit since a couple weeks ago, but not enough for the irrigation canal in town to drain out into the river.
The canal board closed the gates to prevent rising water from coming into town via the river, but that will trap any rain which falls over the canal (no real good options here).

We already know there are three Republican retirements in the Senate - Roberts in Kansas, Alexander in Tennessee, and Enzi in Wyoming. On the Democratic side, Udall in New Mexico is retiring. I’ve seen some rumors that Collins might decide to call it a career since everyone seems to be so mean to her now. But otherwise, I doubt we will see many more in the Senate.

Yeah, NM (like Nevada) has been trending blue for at least a decade. I suspect we will see Arizona also continue to trend that way and it’s very possible that the Dems will have a major advantage in much of the west for a generation.

Democrats still picked up seats in 2018 in the House, and managed to really overperform in the Senate. This just makes voter registration efforts vital.

I inspected the canal (it is not easy to get to in a car in places, even in town) out a mile or so into the Sandhills.
The level in town is a bit lower than it was this morning (yay) but north of town there is a spot where it’s out of the bank and running across a ranch.
