Solid argument that another bruising healthcare reform fight shouldn’t be the next President’s top legislative priority. Maybe start with a green energy initiative or affordable college, and reverse bad Trump administrative policies which undermine the ACA in order to shore it up. vox.com

There’s a union-negotiated process, and the suspension is the first step for anyone for whom firing was recommended by the departmental judge. There’s feedback period, and the decision goes to O’Neil (the chief).

DeBlasio isn’t the one who makes the call.

The GOP Congressional and legislative demographics are a shit show of white supremacy and misogyny.

In Congress, there’s going to be almost no POC who are GOPers. They’ve run them off.
Women make up less than 10% of the GOP caucus. And that number is almost assuredly dropping in 2020. It’s not any better in the statehouses either.

I was notified of the intrusion by my security system, and I scared the intruder away by yelling before the person gained entry into the residential portion of the house,” the lawmaker said through his office.

From the last thread:
re: #469 Belafon

It’s not about the anecdote as much as I really don’t want to encourage people to have a whole lot of kids.

I don’t either, but we should take care of the ones we have, rather than give money to corporations and ultra-wealthy Republican donors.

U.S. Births Dip To 30-Year Low; Fertility Rate Sinks Further Below Replacement Level (NPR)

A UBI is not going to change that, and it costs a whole bunch of money to raise kids besides basic funding for food, clothing, and shelter.

While we’re at it, we could put money into education (particularly about sex, and real sex education, not the religious version Republicans push), also shown to reduce pregnancy rates (and abortions for the pro-foetus worshipers).

In the meantime, I’m eating another lunch of ramen noodles and hot sauce because conservatives love disabled veterans so much—the people they constantly invoke when they don’t want to spend money on anything but military hardware and corporate welfare.

I kinda feel like the whole healthcare thing is devolving into “‘Tastes Great!’ vs’Less Filling!’”, and some Dem should just say,

“Look - my goal is to cover all Americans, with healthcare that is as good as or better than what they’ve got now, and for no more money than we’re already spending. I believe M4A is the way to do that, but I recognize that passing it without an overwhelming majority in the House and Senate may be an impossibly heavy lift. So, as President I would do what we CAN do, while pushing for what we MIGHT do, but the bare minimum is restoring the ACA fully and expanding on it.”

Hey, let’s start with the tangerine toddler. I’ll go first.

He’s entirely unqualified and should be removed from current office for multiple federal felonies and ongoing investigations into his personal wrongdoing in several related cases. His daughter should be removed for being party to real estate fraud in NYC. His son in law should be removed for the same acts.

His family lost right to operate a charitable foundation in NYS for criminal acts.
He ran a scam school out of NYS that claimed to be a university despite no accreditations.
He lies about everything he does, including what he did on 9/11.
He engaged in campaign finance violations, money laundering, wire fraud, and obstruction of justice.
He engaged in interfering in ongoing investigations.
He is a clear and present danger to the US.
He violated the Emoluments Clause.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Anyone he picks is not because they’re qualified and competent but because they tell him what he and his sycophants want to hear.

you’d get my vote for that if you added, that a sweeping change like m4a cannot be done all at once. would probably take 10 years to phase in and in that time could be tinkered with or destroyed, like with the ACA.

the ACA was supposed to get everyone covered one way or another with a minimum standard of care, no exclusions, etc

after that it you can tackle doing it cheaper, more efficiently, or whatever

The simplest way to ease it in is to de-couple from Social Security and lower the age as the economy and political reality permits. There are probably better ways.

absolutely

want to complain that the government does the same thing cheaper and more efficiently?
well follow the government’s model or the free market says out you go

the government’s an unfair competitor because it’s overhead is lower and it’s model isnt’ based on denying claims? you’re free to adopt that model too.

Plus if we were attacked first, whoever did it would be obliterated. The order in which billions die really doesn’t make much of a difference in a nuclear exchange.

Pledging not to use atomic weapons first and enshrining it into law would be a powerful statement to the world from the only nation in history which ever used atomic weapons in a war.

I get the theory of strategic ambiguity - don’t commit to not nuking first. During the Cold War, there was a belief that the US conventional forces and NATO could get overrun by conventional invasion from Warsaw Pact, so nuke threat had to be credible.

But those risks are less. Nuclear deterrence against a rogue nation isn’t going to stop one of them from potentially nuking first. Who do you deter by nuking first when a non-state actor terror group manages to get a nuke (like say from stealing one from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, or the Russian stockpiles).

Other countries have ambiguity built into their strategic doctrine, including India and Israel - both in terms of first use, and size of stockpiles.

Her attacks are disingenuous against Warren (go figure).

The US actually once did engage in a nuclear first strike. It is how the Second World War came to an end in the Pacific. There’s a legitimate debate as to whether it was right/warranted and whether the cost of those bombs outweighed what would have been the costs of a long, drawn out conflict.

If you believe that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were justified, then there’s a question of why a similar bombing in a similar war wouldn’t be appropriate.

All that said… the Cold War and most conflicts between nuclear powers since have operated under the doctrine of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction). We would most likely have advanced knowledge of a nuclear strike against US territory or troops, and most likely would launch a retaliatory strike before our enemies’ bombs hit their targets. We essentially operate under that stricture today, saying that we won’t strike first doesn’t mean we won’t strike.

I had assumed the story was true because I heard it from multiple sources and failed my due diligence to verify its authenticity. So she actually did campaign in PA and MI, though not in Wisconsin.

Blue collar workers in their 40’s and 50’s didn’t want to hear that they had to train for a new career; Trump promised them that he could perform miracles and they wanted to believe. Yes — a lot of his voters were racist (certainly most of the ones I knew, but they were not blue collar) but there were others who saw no way to recover their lives.

Relocating for a new job is not easy if there is no guarantee that a job will be there. Many workers don’t have the resources to move while their families remain behind in the community that provides support. Especially in a nation where each school system follows its own curriculum — uprooting families also means disrupting children’s academic education as well as social network.

A similar war is nearly impossible to imagine, because everyone now has nukes. It’s one of the things that has prevented us getting into another one of those - the consequences of starting a major conventional war that could only end with complete capitulation by one side or the other would make someone dropping a nuke in desperation too easy.

In part because manufacturing has become a smaller and smaller part of our economy and in part because of automation. It’s one of the things that confused me about the debates this week - everyone kept talking about bringing jobs back and creating more manufacturing jobs, and I kept wondering who is going to work those jobs when we have such low unemployment and a service based economy. They also didn’t (and still don’t) want to hear that those manufacturing jobs aren’t coming back. It just seems detached from reality.

Yeah I don’t either. Our economy is in transition. This isn’t the economy of the 50’s.

“Manufacturing Jobs” is code for “jobs that don’t require college but pay enough to own a house and send your own kids to college”

They existed at a unique time in history and aren’t coming back. Manufacturing jobs largely went to automation, and what didn’t went to places where labor is way cheaper. If we tried to force them back here - as Trump dreams of - they’d have to pay minimum wage to be even remotely competitive globally, and/or make the goods so expensive nobody could buy them anyway.

We essentially operate under that stricture today, saying that we won’t strike first doesn’t mean we won’t strike.

there’s no debate about this. If we’d been forced to invade Japan, another half million Americans would have died. We did the right thing.

one other point, if i remember correctly,
when the bombs were dropped on japan, no other country had nuclear capability

other nuclear actors changes the whole calculus today

that is correct. the germans did not have a workable bomb, and never would have, because all their Jewish physicists fled, and they were left with the “heavy water” doofus who couldn’t get the process to work. the russians exploded their first bomb after the war, using plans they got from the Rosenbergs, through Klaus Fuchs.

Democratic President pulling all the troops out = cowardly capitulation. E.g. Somalia after Black Hawk Down.

Republican President pulling all the troops out = strategic brilliance. E.g. Beirut after the embassy bombing.

Didn’t really care for being diverted from the western Med aboard John F. Kennedy (CV-67) to Beirut and three months floating around off the coast of Lebanon.

My aircraft squadron lost a pilot, and his bombardier spent a month as a POW of Syria after an A-6 was shot down over Lebanon attacking a town east of Beirut in retaliation for shooting at a US reconnaissance plane. The Reagan Administration overruled COMFAIRMED for an evening attack, wanting a dawn attack instead.

That left the Navy’s pilots flying into the sun while Syrian pilots had it behind them.

Reagan wanted the image of a “dawn attack” as the idea of some sort of scary combat move, rather than listening to the admiral in charge of the area noting Lebanon and Syria are east of the Mediterranean Sea. We accomplished nothing except dropping a bunch of bombs in the wrong place.

Wingnuts went ballistic when Rev. Jesse Jackson negotiated the bombardier’s release with Syria (and he didn’t have to give them anything).

France later identified the correct place the attack came from in the Beirut bombing (we’d called off an immediate counterattack because of unclear intelligence) and conducted a successful aircraft attack against the folks who launched the bombing of the Americans, French, and British in Beirut.

Happy Birthday, James Baldwin (with a pack of good quotes)

A country is only as good - I don’t care now about the Constitution and the laws, at the moment let us leave those things aside - a country is only as strong as the people who make it up and the country turns into what the people want it to become. Now this country is going to be transformed. It will not be transformed by an act of God, but by all of us, by you and me. I don’t believe any longer that we can afford to say that is it entirely out of our hands. We make the world we’re living in and we have to make it over.

The New Testament already condemns me for the one unforgivable sin anyway (which sort of belies a claim of omnipotence, but that’s another story), so I don’t really care what Mark Taylor or any other apologist thinks.

That is, other than monitoring what they say in case they decide to go all in and round up atheists and kill us (since I’ve been hearing that threat all my life).

absolutely

want to complain that the government does the same thing cheaper and more efficiently?
well follow the government’s model or the free market says out you go

the government’s an unfair competitor because it’s overhead is lower and it’s model isnt’ based on denying claims? you’re free to adopt that model too.

public option means ‘option’.
if everyone’s choosing that option, private insurance will have to adapt or die

Funny how nobody ever complains about socialized fire-fighting.

re: #169 Blind Frog Belly White

“Manufacturing Jobs” is code for “jobs that don’t require college but pay enough to own a house and send your own kids to college”

They existed at a unique time in history and aren’t coming back.

You mean that unique time in history when we were literally the only industrialized nation on earth? When all of Europe and most of Asia was piles of rubble that needed 15-20 years to rebuild, which in the meantime that was pretty much their only economic activity (and they needed American-made bulldozers and cement mixers and steel beams to be able to do it)?

That unique time in history?
