“Look - my goal is to cover all Americans, with healthcare that is as good as or better than what they’ve got now, and for no more money than we’re already spending. I believe M4A is the way to do that, but I recognize that passing it without an overwhelming majority in the House and Senate may be an impossibly heavy lift. So, as President I would do what we CAN do, while pushing for what we MIGHT do, but the bare minimum is restoring the ACA fully and expanding on it.”

I get the theory of strategic ambiguity - don’t commit to not nuking first. During the Cold War, there was a belief that the US conventional forces and NATO could get overrun by conventional invasion from Warsaw Pact, so nuke threat had to be credible.

But those risks are less. Nuclear deterrence against a rogue nation isn’t going to stop one of them from potentially nuking first. Who do you deter by nuking first when a non-state actor terror group manages to get a nuke (like say from stealing one from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, or the Russian stockpiles).

Other countries have ambiguity built into their strategic doctrine, including India and Israel - both in terms of first use, and size of stockpiles.

Her attacks are disingenuous against Warren (go figure).

Downstairs I was justly called to task for repeating the widely spread story that Hillary lost WI, PA, and MI because she failed to campaign in those states. I had assumed the story was true because I heard it from multiple sources and failed my due diligence to verify its authenticity. So she actually did campaign in PA and MI, though not in Wisconsin.

Blue collar workers in their 40’s and 50’s didn’t want to hear that they had to train for a new career; Trump promised them that he could perform miracles and they wanted to believe. Yes — a lot of his voters were racist (certainly most of the ones I knew, but they were not blue collar) but there were others who saw no way to recover their lives.

Relocating for a new job is not easy if there is no guarantee that a job will be there. Many workers don’t have the resources to move while their families remain behind in the community that provides support. Especially in a nation where each school system follows its own curriculum — uprooting families also means disrupting children’s academic education as well as social network.

Downstairs I was justly called to task for repeating the widely spread story that Hillary lost WI, PA, and MI because she failed to campaign in those states. I had assumed the story was true because I heard it from multiple sources and failed my due diligence to verify its authenticity. So she actually did campaign in PA and MI, though not in Wisconsin.

Blue collar workers in their 40’s and 50’s didn’t want to hear that they had to train for a new career; Trump promised them that he could perform miracles and they wanted to believe. Yes — a lot of his voters were racist (certainly most of the ones I knew, but they were not blue collar) but there were others who saw no way to recover their lives.

Relocating for a new job is not easy if there is no guarantee that a job will be there. Many workers don’t have the resources to move while their families remain behind in the community that provides support. Especially in a nation where each school system follows its own curriculum — uprooting families also means disrupting children’s academic education as well as social network.

They existed at a unique time in history and aren’t coming back. Manufacturing jobs largely went to automation, and what didn’t went to places where labor is way cheaper. If we tried to force them back here - as Trump dreams of - they’d have to pay minimum wage to be even remotely competitive globally, and/or make the goods so expensive nobody could buy them anyway.

The US actually once did engage in a nuclear first strike. It is how the Second World War came to an end in the Pacific. There’s a legitimate debate as to whether it was right/warranted and whether the cost of those bombs outweighed what would have been the costs of a long, drawn out conflict.

If you believe that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were justified, then there’s a question of why a similar bombing in a similar war wouldn’t be appropriate.

All that said… the Cold War and most conflicts between nuclear powers since have operated under the doctrine of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction). We would most likely have advanced knowledge of a nuclear strike against US territory or troops, and most likely would launch a retaliatory strike before our enemies’ bombs hit their targets. We essentially operate under that stricture today, saying that we won’t strike first doesn’t mean we won’t strike.

My aircraft squadron lost a pilot, and his bombardier spent a month as a POW of Syria after an A-6 was shot down over Lebanon attacking a town east of Beirut in retaliation for shooting at a US reconnaissance plane. The Reagan Administration overruled COMFAIRMED for an evening attack, wanting a dawn attack instead.

That left the Navy’s pilots flying into the sun while Syrian pilots had it behind them.

Reagan wanted the image of a “dawn attack” as the idea of some sort of scary combat move, rather than listening to the admiral in charge of the area noting Lebanon and Syria are east of the Mediterranean Sea. We accomplished nothing except dropping a bunch of bombs in the wrong place.

Wingnuts went ballistic when Rev. Jesse Jackson negotiated the bombardier’s release with Syria (and he didn’t have to give them anything).

France later identified the correct place the attack came from in the Beirut bombing (we’d called off an immediate counterattack because of unclear intelligence) and conducted a successful aircraft attack against the folks who launched the bombing of the Americans, French, and British in Beirut.
