July 22, 2019 | Collin Marshall — As the the NPR staff gathered to watch his performance, Jacob Collier sprinted full bore down the hallway. It seems the North London 24-year-old can hardly contain his creative energy. It comes out in his wardrobe and most definitely in his music, but it’s not misdirected or out of control. These are intricate and precise compositions, like a ship in a bottle made of thousands of planks of wood, yet light enough to sail in a breeze. It’s on a scale you wouldn’t imagine. Here’s an example: This year he covered Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer’s “Moon River” by recording himself 5,000 times and working in 144 other vocal submissions, and then he printed and sold signed copies of his Logic Pro audio session for fans while on tour. Though this is is a regular day for Jacob, his output continues to astonish everyone around him, both in its quality and sheer quantity. This year alone, he’s putting out a project called Djesse with four distinct and complete volumes. Many of the songs are being written along the way, including one crafted specifically for the Tiny Desk called “It Don’t Matter.”

The whole Tiny Desk Concert has a lot to unpack. Check my math, but by my count Jacob plays seven instruments, if you include his singing. And you should — Jacob’s stamp has always been to use voice in his compositions like a Swiss army knife, and virtually every combination of band members harmonizes at some point in the show. It’s reflective of his philosophy on music as a connecting tool, to use the instrument we all possess, which drew me to his art in the first place. And as if to make good on those beliefs and bring all of us into one moment, he invited the crowd to sing the final lyrics of the concert together. It was the end of the show, but not even close to the limit of Jacob’s imaginative bounds. He obsessed over leaving us a gift: a fake ID fashioned out of a passport photo and an Oyster Card — London’s public transit fare card — which now sits on the hallowed shelves of the Tiny Desk. Extra credit if you can spot it in future episodes.

“Suspects”

There are nearly always what turn out to be false reports of multiple shooters immediately after a mass shooting. These seem to be more solid than usual though.

lawhawk  Aug 3, 2019 • 11:55:02am

Check off the excuses - it’s Texas. It’s an open carry state. Easy access to guns.

Not a single one of those things stopped the mass shooting, lessened the death toll, or the costs and carnage.

The GOP and NRA will insist that only more guns and easy access will prevent shootings, and yet all the empirical evidence says nope - they’re fucking on the wrong side of history.

Every state that has strong gun laws has a lower per capita gun death rate. That means fewer shootings, mass shootings, and lower death toll. It means lower health care costs and criminal justice costs from fewer shootings. Every country with strong gun control has fewer mass shootings.

Trump will ignore the mass shooting as he usually does, unless the shooter is a Muslim, black man, or immigrant. That it could be a white guy would undermine his mighty white view on things.

Either that or the shooter is moving quickly as he goes. Thus, witnesses hear gunfire from two different directions and assume multiple shooters.

I prefer the term mass murder, not mass shooting. The NRA was squealing a couple years ago about the press’s use of the word “gunman” to describe such people. Their argument was two-fold; a) there is not a word “gunwoman” (duh, women almost never do this) and 2) it vilified the gun and not the shooter. Their preferred term was “shooter,” and a lot of the press went along with the NRA framing.

You can also shoot a bow-and-arrow, but they are vanishingly rare in mass shootings.

Has anyone said “Good Samaritan” yet?

Every time anyone does something half way humanly decent the news trots out that phrase.

What is wrong with “Good Citizen”, “Good Person”, “Decent Chap”, “Non-Douchebag” or just noting that someone did something that should be reflexive rather than biblicaly notable?

It is God’s plan. Not really what you want to hear after a loved one dies or is diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Especially if you’re not a Christian.

I’ve heard that here about my very ill step-father and they know I’m an atheist.

Even worse than “It is God’s plan” is when someone is in a state of fear or grief and they swoop in for proselytisation.

That happened to me during prep for my last hand surgery at the VA. I’d already been given drugs for preparation to be anesthetised, and the hospital chaplain came by my bed.

He had a list of people to visit with personal info on a clipboard, and he did not ask me if I wanted to pray. He asked me if I wanted to talk, or if there was something he could do for me.

I thanked him and said I didn’t need to talk, but asked if he would be kind enough to check on my wife in the waiting lounge. (My wife later told me he did check with her, and while he sat with others to pray or give religious comfort, he did not do that with my wife.)

Then the surgeon came by and told me “It’s my custom to offer prayer for my patients before we start. Do you have any special request for prayer?”

I told him I put my trust in his experience and long years of study. That was enough for me. He was sort of taken aback by that, but thanked me before I was wheeled out.

In recovery, one of the nurses told me he’d never seen that doc so upset by what he regarded as a refusal to pray with him before.

A surefire way to tell if someone is a liar and/or ignorant about science is if they say a scientific theory is “only a theory,” like it’s a guess or a hypothesis and not a factual framework. That’s exactly what Florida’s new Board of Education chairman, a citrus farmer named Andy Tuck, said about the theory of evolution when he was the vice-chairman:

“As a person of faith, I strongly oppose any study of evolution as fact at all. I’m purely in favor of it staying a theory and only a theory. I won’t support any evolution being taught as fact at all in any of our schools.”

How long is that period of time? However long it takes for the immediate spike of anger and outrage to die back down to the background hum of general disinterest.

Then I told him about the manifesto, that it declared there was an “Hispanic invasion” and the white dude had to do something about it. That was what prompted the declaration of “mental illness.”

I will write a manifesto before robbing your dad’s house making sure to justify it.

Plenty of people arguing “lack of spiritual values” or “Christianity” is a problem as well.

They’re moving to blame this on atheists, just as they did with the AME Church shooting and the Sutherland Springs church shooting.

The very thing which outed me publicly here when I refuted a wingnut in the newspaper blaming mass shootings specifically on atheists.

On the other side, I got several phone calls from the area and SE Wyoming along with mailed cards thanking me for my letter. (One person in my town called thanking me for my letter but asked that I keep that person’s lack-of-faith quiet as that person saw what was happening to me and my wife).

To give folks a somewhat relevant update, it’s now been months since the shooting here in VA Beach at the seat of our own local gov’t. No new laws or regulations, whether at the state or local level, have even been brought up to address the tragedy that happened. Instead, we’ve had “listening sessions” and “group discussions” that have drawn criticism not for the lack of action…but the cost of conducting them on gov’t time.

And in an indictment of just how little the public thinks of the investigatory powers of law enforcement these days, the city finally had to bow to public pressure and hire a private company to look into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Should also be pointed out that if the shooter were Arabic, not only would this have been deemed “terrorism” within minutes of his identity being made public, but we’d already be knee-deep in “serious” pundits suggesting arguing for a new round of “anti-terror” laws and travel bans.

And yeah, look for that to be the talking point making the rounds tomorrow now that it’s pretty much confirmed that this is another shooting by a white guy with a white nationalist manifesto: “Violent rhetoric.” Why? Because the “neutral” press can’t possibly nail down their wingnut guests for pushing racism and bigotry, because those guests would refuse to ever come back. So we’ll get suggestions that “both sides” need to do something about the “violent rhetoric” from their followers, with liberal guests told they need to stop hating so much on Trump in order to “lower the temp/volume/etc.”

I saw Charles Pierce point out the very reason yesterday: Because the Dem leadership is composed largely people who were either in office or elected in the immediate years after Ronnie won with the help of “Reagan Democrats.” Ever since then, there has been a party-wide aversion to any policies or proposals that would risk angering the “white working class” that the party has desperately been trying to win back. re: #365 Targetpractice

When it was Fort Hood and the Boston Marathon, individuals radicalized by reading material online and adopting the argument frame of terrorist groups were terrorists.

When it’s white dudes reciting from a recognizable menu of white supremacist talking points used to justify terror acts…it’s mental illness.

Thing is, in a better world I would argue that there’s a lot of nuance in the gulf between the shitty rhetoric and the shitty actor, because a lot of folks adopt external narrative elements to feed something already present inside them (ideology sublimating existing tendencies)…so the line between “fucked up individual thinking” and “terrorist ideology” should be blurry.

But where we stand, there’s a fundamental distinction that’s all bad faith—what kinds of people get to be damaged; what kind of violent rhetoric is a threat unto itself, while another is “free speech” that is acceptably part of the discourse. This is systemic white supremacy at its most visceral, the fruiting body of a general process in which white people are separate and distinct from “the other,” and acts directly driven by whiteness are still individual acts, while any act by “the other” involves collective blame. It doesn’t matter what people say they believe, even what they believe they believe, when these kinds of mycelium…these undergirding assumptions…are at play.

So can Arab Muslims. Jews. Poles. Irish.

White in this country is “favoured group.” Anyone not in “favoured group” is not white.

Some people can never be white, no matter how much they conform or how rich they are.

“Racism” as a word only first appears in print in the XX Century. The concept existed far longer than that. (The reverse is also true: “spaceship” appeared in the XIX Century, a hundred years before we actually had them.)

@Green_Footballs
I eventually stopped following this stuff because nobody seemed to give a shit. Journalists didn’t care, despite my attempts to get them interested. Even liberals on Twitter were telling me to just ignore it and it would go away.

Now we see how well that plan worked.

I did notice that you posted less about these hate sites. I appreciated hearing about it (thank you), but I probably didn’t respond much because I found those sites too distressing to visit, and I felt helpless as to how to change any of it. I long ago decided that I was never going to be on Twitter, so I feel like I’m not fighting in those trenches. I’m kind of living vicariously through your Twitter feed and others.

So they won’t go after Trump with such attacks because they greatly fear turning off white voters by doing so.

It needs to be pointed out to them that it was the overwhelming support of black women who got them across the finish line in 2018.

The Democratic Party is the party which reflects the diversity of the nation. It’s reflected in our voters, our candidates, and our platform.

Some candidates are better at getting that across than others, but they all should be trying to do that. Listen to what those groups have to say.

Everyone can’t get everything they want every time, but to swipe a conservative phrase and re-focus it:

“A rising tide lifts all boats when our party unties them from the docks.”

We want everyone’s boat to rise, they want to drown most of the boats.

I’d love to repeal the 2nd Amendment or clarify that it doesn’t mean that every Tom, Dick and Harry is entitled to guns, especially those that can be fired in multiple rounds.

Even the Heller case says that states can put limits on what sort of firearms are permitted. Wingnuts read the vindication of a single man in a specific case and claim it’s for everyone.

I want to first change 10 U.S. Code § 246. Militia: composition and classes. That is the law which defines the militia as a) the organised militia, being the National Guard and Naval Militia and and women citizens (only) who are part of the National Guard, and b) the unorganised militia, all men who are citizens or declared they will become citizens aged 17-45.

Statues are easier to change than amendments. The first problem with that section (b) up there is it fails on XIV Amendment equal treatment law regarding sex and gender. Also what about women non-citizen members of the National Guard, they aren’t part of the militia? They aren’t even mentioned in the Naval Militia.

It also fails for unequal treatment by age - by a strict reading of the law, anyone over 45 who is a man, or any woman who is not a member of the National Guard, is not a member of the militia, and therefore has no inherent right to bear arms under the II Amendment.

Men who are declared to become citizens are treated differently than women who have declared the same.

Exemption to membership in the militia is membership in the active duty Armed Forces or Reserves.

That law dates back to 1956 and is the basis of the Heller decision.

Repeal section (b).

The Founders could never have conceived of the sorts of advanced weaponry we have now. Likewise with the I Amendment, they could not have conceived of the vast expansion of means of communications.

Wingnuts cherry-pick the Constitution the same way religious apologists cherry-pick holy books. “This section MUST be read plainly as I can have any firearm I want, right up to my own suitcase nuke.” That section regarding freedom of religion only applies to Christians.

I down for that.

As for twenty-one, the reason the militia law says seventeen is because a person can join the Armed Forces or National Guard at sixteen years and eleven months (with parental permission) or eighteen (without).

As far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t really matter what they think. But we definitely need to have a real conversation about what to do about these killings.

As Jim Wright says, take the NRA’s own safety rules regarding safe handling and care of firearms and make those rules law, with significant penalties for breaking them.

The NRA’s firearms safety rules are actually pretty good. Tell them you’re doing them a favour by recognising all the hard work they did to develop safety rules for safe handling, so much so that those rules should become law.

Second, get rid of the “accidental discharge” myth. Unless the firearm mechanically failed while you were using it in a safe manner, there is no such thing as an accidental discharge, only negligent or reckless discharges or storage. Penalise those.

The March for Our Lives group has taken away the NRA’s chokehold on the conversation. Push them into a corner and make them accept their own rules as law.

The Founders wrote that Amendment at a time when we had no standing army, no national guard, no city police departments or county sheriffs or highway patrol… and it would have taken days to get a message to the capitol to summon help.

Back then in absolutely made sense for every house on every farm and in every small town to have firearms — they had no one but themselves and their immediate neighbors to defend against Indians, bears, slave uprisings and Canadians (not necessarily in that order).

But that was then, and this is now.

If you read their debates over the 2nd amendment, they were more concerned with who would be exempt from militia duty since they didn’t want to create a large standing army.
