But again, my old refrain - these are for-profit companies. They exist to sell advertisement, subscription payments mostly cover just delivery costs.

If Trump and his brand of fascism is popular with 40% of the US, then these for-profit companies will look at them as needed customers too.

I’m 70 years old and I think I can still engage. I am kind of selective about when and where, and I have always been aware of change as it happened. I think part of this is the influence that science fiction and real science had on me when I was growing up. It was a futuristic milieu and that future is here. It isn’t what we expected, of course, but many developments were in fact anticipated and explored. Personally accessible information networks of almost unlimited scope were a feature of many SF stories when I was young, for example. Resource depletion, over-population, the rise of destructive cults, and climate change were all addressed in myriad ways. Even the election of a buffoon like Trump was anticipated and the power of modern media was seen as a factor. Some of the strangest developments of recent years have an oddly familiar look to them.

I don’t think Joe understands how the political dynamic has changed. Every negative trend in American life since the Great Depression has come into sharp focus in the Republican Party. I think Joe still assumes these are basically rational people with whom he can deal on a basis of mutual interest. He knew for instance that Nixon was a crook but Tricky Dick was not an existential threat nor were his followers fed dubiously sourced misinformation to the point where they lived in an alternate world. Joe’s Republican opponents lied, to be sure, but they did not directly attack science and reason and democracy themselves nor did they re-write history wholesale.Today, we need a visionary approach or all the progress we have made as a society since the Age of Enlightenment will be destroyed. If this takes someone younger, so be it.

That is a very good point. TV was saturated with violent westerns in the late 50s and early 60s. There were something like 32 western series on the 3 networks in 1959, at least one per night for each network and sometimes two. Some of them were extremely well written and acted but almost all featured a mythology built around guns. This was reflected in many of the titles, Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, the Rifleman etc. The latter show featured some amazing on-scene chemistry between the eponymous rifleman, Luke McCain, played by Chuck Connors, and his young son Mark, played by Johnny Crawford. It is an excellent potrayal of parenting and, in fact, of single parenting. During the series, though, Lucas killed something 120 people, all richly deserving bad guys, of course.

My personal favorite remains LMB - Lois McMaster Bujold and her works. Space opera, mystery, regency romance, fantasy and pretty hard SF :D

I only met one Science Fiction author, but I have to say, it’s a fabulous one.

When the fourth book in the Hitchhiker’s trilogy came out, Douglas Adams did a tour. I got to meet him at a bookstore in Boulder.

He was, naturally, disheveled and asked what day it was. Could not have been more perfect.

Loved him.

My dentist offers Netflix Andy Griffith or Western TV channel while doing his thing. Always good to watch an Andy Griffith or an old oater. My 80-year-old dad still remembers being utterly terrified when seeing James Arness appearing as The Thing. When Arness died in 2011 at the age of 88 the newspaper i worked for had gone to a universal desk instead of our home base. The 20-somethings on the desk in did not run an obituary article on him. I spent days fielding calls about why we didn’t have an obituary on him from our older (i.e. only) subscribers.

Tonight a friend discussed her conversation with a Chinese acquaintance who is an economist and a professor at a Chicago area university. He expressed his support for Trump’s tariffs because China is a bad actor when it comes to intellectual property rights and needs to suffer severe consequences before it will mend its behavior. My only economics classes were in high school a lifetime ago and so I cannot comment on whether there are any merits to this professor’s argument.
