Joe Biden, once again with a political version of getting three feet into his mouth at the same time.

Just what we need.

Typhoon 1908 goes crashing across Kyushu:

Not very powerful, but a lot of rain.

But bigger things are in store for next week, as to the south there are two typhoons brewing, and the models conflict on what will happen, probably because the two systems are going to interact:

So far the Atlantic has been pretty quiet, but things are going to start getting active soon.

Too bad about Joe Biden. He has been one of the best public servants of the past 100 years and his life story is a remarkable testament in and of itself. It is time for him to move on though. The sooner he recognizes this the better.

This is what happens to the emeriti, those who retire and still want to engage, but find themselves out of step.

It’s not ageist to point out that we all grow up in a certain milieu and we are formed by that, and that it sticks with us even when we’re old.

Biden is not really transitioning to the post-internet age, where young people form connections and opinions literally quite across the world, and they are aware of what is going on, even if they don’t have the years and wisdom to necessarily pick the best path forward. But the young are who we need to redesign American politics, to finally leave the Confederate mindset that has been nurtured for 150 years.

I have to say, I’m really fucking tired of all this goddamn motherfucking both siderism from the New York Times and other mainstream media outlets.

The simple fact of the matter is that the Republican party is a white supremacist death cult that has gone all-in on a repeat of the fascist and nationalist vileness of the 1920s and 1930s.

Pretending that this is not true is causing mainstream political reporting in the US to be almost completely divorced from reality.

I think the NYT is guilty more so than some other national print outlets, and that some TV networks are better than others.

But again, my old refrain - these are for-profit companies. They exist to sell advertisement, subscription payments mostly cover just delivery costs.

If Trump and his brand of fascism is popular with 40% of the US, then these for-profit companies will look at them as needed customers too.

I’m 70 years old and I think I can still engage. I am kind of selective about when and where, and I have always been aware of change as it happened. I think part of this is the influence that science fiction and real science had on me when I was growing up. It was a futuristic milieu and that future is here. It isn’t what we expected, of course, but many developments were in fact anticipated and explored. Personally accessible information networks of almost unlimited scope were a feature of many SF stories when I was young, for example. Resource depletion, over-population, the rise of destructive cults, and climate change were all addressed in myriad ways. Even the election of a buffoon like Trump was anticipated and the power of modern media was seen as a factor. Some of the strangest developments of recent years have an oddly familiar look to them.

Of course Biden as president would be infinitely better than any Republican, and he has my vote in the general if he’s the nominee.

However, his administration would be 4 to 8 years of trying for small-ball reforms of a status quo that is totally unsustainable, all the while facing just as severe and unified opposition from Republicans and the media as if he were trying for a communist seizure of the means of production.

True, but unless the Democrats win control of the Senate AND abolish or radically reform the filibuster (which many Senators don’t seem inclined to do) that will be the case for any Democratic President. I don’t like it, but that is what we are probably looking at.

I don’t think Joe understands how the political dynamic has changed. Every negative trend in American life since the Great Depression has come into sharp focus in the Republican Party. I think Joe still assumes these are basically rational people with whom he can deal on a basis of mutual interest. He knew for instance that Nixon was a crook but Tricky Dick was not an existential threat nor were his followers fed dubiously sourced misinformation to the point where they lived in an alternate world. Joe’s Republican opponents lied, to be sure, but they did not directly attack science and reason and democracy themselves nor did they re-write history wholesale.Today, we need a visionary approach or all the progress we have made as a society since the Age of Enlightenment will be destroyed. If this takes someone younger, so be it.

Fair point, but anyone I’d want as president would then work the bully pulpit incessantly on the major issues, combined with a sustained strategy of 50-state D party-building, with an explicitly stated goal of getting to a House and Senate that are both in sufficiently solid D control to be functional.

I don’t see Biden doing that.

Turning America into an armed prison camp….FOR FREEDOM!

They are afraid, very, very afraid. Their life has been on a tether since a black man became president. The oppression of the black man’s revenge was too much to handle. Reality must be rewritten in the Image of Trump so the fragile white people of America can breathe free air again. Pathetic.

You want to pay higher taxes for that? This isn’t a police state despite what you may wish. What you propose isn’t freedom but a state of fear. Fuck you Lumpy, fuck your racism, & fuck your guns that you only use to pretend to act tough.

Don’t be silly. He wants retired policemen. You wouldn’t need to pay them, right? Not that there are enough of them to do what he wants anyway.
Also, see the part about retired. They might want to, you know, not work after they retire.

I’ll keep saying. More people armed isn’t a free society. It’s a scared one. We should be able to have our kids go to school, shop at the store, attend concerts, etc without fear of being ambushed and despite what assholes on the right not being armed doesn’t make you irresponsible. This is the 21st century.

Prior to the recent horror, this is what my local sheriff’s office did to raise money for the DARE program. Never mind that one of the weapons the office auctioned off was used to kill one of its deputies just a few years ago. Needless to say, the publicity only caused raffle sales to surge. Sigh.

Pure acid sarcasm, hydrofluoric in fact.

I hope that this point will be sufficiently clarified in our Constitution, so that our descendants may understand fully the need for an armed and well-regulated group of citizens that can put down any despotic government, ninth-grade class, synagogue congregation, The Dark Knight Rises audience, or group of shoppers at a Walmart that rises up against them.

It is the price we must pay, for what signifies a few lives lost in a century or two on the battlefield, or at a Little League game, or in a high-school library? We do not take our task to safeguard our liberty lightly, and we must never hesitate when our existence as a free state is put at risk by the sinister whims of autocrats and nightclub attendees and older sisters and high-school principals and great-grandmothers and pharmacy technicians and parents of young kids and accountants and dancers and 7-year-olds and well-liked colleagues and leaders of Bible study groups and immigrants and aunts and aspiring photographers and paramedics and the first people in their family to attend college.

That is a very good point. TV was saturated with violent westerns in the late 50s and early 60s. There were something like 32 western series on the 3 networks in 1959, at least one per night for each network and sometimes two. Some of them were extremely well written and acted but almost all featured a mythology built around guns. This was reflected in many of the titles, Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, the Rifleman etc. The latter show featured some amazing on-scene chemistry between the eponymous rifleman, Luke McCain, played by Chuck Connors, and his young son Mark, played by Johnny Crawford. It is an excellent potrayal of parenting and, in fact, of single parenting. During the series, though, Lucas killed something 120 people, all richly deserving bad guys, of course.

True, but unless the Democrats win control of the Senate AND abolish or radically reform the filibuster (which many Senators don’t seem inclined to do) that will be the case for any Democratic President. I don’t like it, but that is what we are probably looking at.

On radically reforming the filibuster, I’m all for returning to actually having to do the filibuster. None of this threat of a filibuster.

Make ‘em drag the cots into the Senate, bring in food, &c.

I can still watch “Gunsmoke” when I stumble on an episode. Well written and acted. Arness still is the image of a western lawman to me. Probably why my favorite westerns are High Noon and Shane.

Some of the others? Not so much. Ran into an episode of “Bonanza” not that long ago and wanted to puke.

My dentist offers Netflix Andy Griffith or Western TV channel while doing his thing. Always good to watch an Andy Griffith or an old oater. My 80-year-old dad still remembers being utterly terrified when seeing James Arness appearing as The Thing. When Arness died in 2011 at the age of 88 the newspaper i worked for had gone to a universal desk instead of our home base. The 20-somethings on the desk in did not run an obituary article on him. I spent days fielding calls about why we didn’t have an obituary on him from our older (i.e. only) subscribers.
