Our problems as a country are very deep-seated. They have festered there because angry white rural people have been allowed to live in a fantasyland sold to them by Hate Radio and Fox News.

Are they lost to us forever?

Can some journalist point out that maybe what Obama was doing - with the bill to ban mentally ill people from getting guns - was right … and that what Trump did to kill that law, was wrong?

That will set him off.

It will also deprive him of his now-preferred talking point about mental illness.

If Democrats do manage to seize control of congress & the presidency again - with voter suppression & Russian fraud, this is no done deal - then the first order of business has to be to attack the roots of the problem.

The Fairness Doctrine needs to be re-imposed. Media megalopolies like Sinclair, Clear Channel and Fox News need to be broken up.

Stop the poison from being injected into the veins of America, and the patient may recover in time.

Local TV news doesn’t do in-depth reporting on the communities they exist in. Mostly, they just “read the newspaper on the air.”

Local papers have been cut to the bone. A new merger means that 1 of every 6 papers will be owned by one company.

If we want to snap conservative Republicans out of their fantasyland, with a strong dose of reality, independent news is the only solution.

Sadly, that solution is in even shorter supply.

If you live in one of these cities, what you read, hear — and think — will be controlled by one massive company.

I am going to give Trump a pass on that — reading is very difficult for him; he’s probably dyslexic and his total concentration on the teleprompter meant that he was reciting words he saw for the first time without thinking of their meaning. He cannot read and think at the same time. ( yes — I know — the last sentence could be amended to “He cannot think” with the other words crossed out)

And as our Pie Overlord has pointed out, he probably requires reading glasses but he’s simply too vain to use them in public. So the text on the TelePrompTer has to be set to max so he can see it, which causes him to stumble over his words.

Don’t get me started on the problems he seems to have with his dentures coming loose all the time; that’s likely why he slurs his speech so frequently.

The hardest thing that Americans are going to have to do in this generation is to get used to the idea that the United States is just another country. Still a very big and powerful country, to be sure, but not “the indispensable nation”, not a beacon of liberty shining into the darkness, and not the only great power that really matters.

They weren’t in control of the Senate judiciary, and the GOP was setting a large portion of the agenda. I think the Democrats fell into a trap, but imagine if, after hearing about her, they hadn’t agressively pursued it. That’s why I think the GOP leaked it: There was no way the Democrats were not going to agressively pursue it, not with party getting most of the women vote.

The upside down door is great for the little dogs, though. :-D

When I was a kid I loved the books about Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, who lived in an upside-down house and invited all the neighborhood kids to come and play there. She also had magic potions that she gave to concerned parents to help with children’s behavioral problems.

There was a TV series in the 1990’s I believe (with Jean Stapleton) but they had to remove all the magic potions because they didn’t want people to think Mrs. Piggle Wiggle was a drug dealer!

They weren’t in control of the Senate judiciary, and the GOP was setting a large portion of the agenda. I think the Democrats fell into a trap, but imagine if, after hearing about her, they hadn’t agressively pursued it. That’s why I think the GOP leaked it: There was no way the Democrats were not going to agressively pursue it, not with party getting most of the women vote.

certainly
but all they needed was press conference after press conference asking the same question as above - at least this part:

Who paid off Brett Kavanaugh’s $92,000 country club fees plus his $200,000 credit card debt plus his $1.2 million mortgage?

simple questions. easy answers. if it’s not a problem what are you hiding? then we’ll know we’re putting on a squeaky clean guy….

The Mexican government said it’s considering extradition of the El Paso suspect, and other steps in response to the attack.

At least seven of the 22 people murdered in the mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday were Mexican nationals, making it a tragedy that spans both sides of the US-Mexico border.

And Mexico’s government is promising to respond.

…including potentially filing a lawsuit against the seller of the assault weapon used in the attack and possibly seeking the extradition of the 21-year-old suspected shooter on terrorism charges.

Experts I spoke to say it’s unlikely Mexico would triumph if it chose to pursue extradition. But as mounting evidence suggests this was a racially motivated attack, the Mexican government may have reason to at least attempt it and put even a little pressure on the United States.

I’m sure this Xtian believes he was engaging in “constructive discipline” with this innocent kid

A Montana man allegedly assaulted a 13-year-old boy who he believed had disrespected the American national anthem at a county fair in the state. Curt James Brockway, 39, of Superior, is accused of assaulting the boy at the Mineral County Fair and Rodeo at around 11 p.m. on Saturday.

“There was a little boy lying on the ground,” Taylor Hennick, who was as the rodeo, told Missoulian. “He was bleeding out of his ears, seizing on the ground, just not coherent.”

According to KPAX, witnesses saw a man pick up a boy and throw him to the ground. Brockway reportedly tried to justify his actions to nearby fairgoers. Hennick told Missoulian: “He said [the boy] was disrespecting the national anthem so he had every right to do that.”

Brockway, who has a previous assault with a weapon charge from 2011, and who Missoulian reported is a registered violent offender, will be released on his own recognizance Tuesday.

Donald Trump finally shared the name of someone he consults on foreign policy: himself.

Asked on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” who he talks with consistently about foreign policy, Trump responded, “I’m speaking with myself, number one, because I have a very good brain and I’ve said a lot of things.”

“I know what I’m doing and I listen to a lot of people, I talk to a lot of people and at the appropriate time I’ll tell you who the people are,” Trump said. “But my primary consultant is myself and I have a good instinct for this stuff.

The New York real estate mogul has kept mum on his foreign policy team, despite promising in early February to release a list of his advisers in “about two weeks.”

Trump was also asked on Wednesday morning if his foreign policy was “neoisolationist,” to which he responded “I wouldn’t say that at all.”

The victim in Baton Rouge was a 42-year-old man who drove himself to the hospital, Fox 8 reported. He was at the store to buy a lunchbox for his child when two shoppers got into a dispute and both pulled out guns, according to investigators. Only one of the two shoppers fired a gun, according to Gautreaux.

“It’s unfortunate that the one subject got struck,” Gautreaux said. “He was, like I said, an innocent shopper at the store. He was standing in the line.”
According to Fox 8, one suspect is in custody and another is still at large.

U.S. trade gap with China reaches all-time high under Trump

The U.S. trade deficit in goods with China set a new record during President Donald Trump’s second year in office, despite his efforts to rein in what the administration views as Beijing’s trade transgressions. The trade gap rose to $419.2 billion in 2018, from the previous record of $375.5 billion in 2017, a Commerce Department report released Wednesday showed.

A senior Democrat slammed Trump for failing to make progress on his promise of reducing the overall goods deficit, despite lobbing tariffs at both China and other trade partners in 2018.

What if all semiautomatic rifles with any kind of removable magazine - where removal does not completely disable the rifle so to avoid bullet button schemes - be defined as NFA weapons subject to registration and taxation. Increase the cost of the tax stamp and index it to inflation while we’re at it. That would help reduce the number and ease of aquiring black rifles.

I was shopping at Wal-Mart a couple of nights ago and I passed a Latino family. We exchanged friendly glances but I couldn’t help but wonder if they were internally worried that I was another racist white guy that might be ready to cause them trouble.

And I’m sure other minorities think that when they see me too.

Fuck those racist white nationalist fucks for ruining this for all of us.

I was in a Whole Foods parking lot last week and got between a Hispanic mom and kids and their dad who was lagging behind. One of the kids just lost it and started screaming and I wondered if it was because some big old white dude was in between them and dad.

So, David Leonhardt writes an op-ed for the NYT, saying Conservatism has a violence problem (NO SHIT!)

Seth Mandel, who I seem to recall is otherwise fairly awful, posts a Twitter thread saying “He has a point”, that the violent imagery, calls for violence, and actual violence are really asymmetrical.

The responses are amazing for the lack of sense - basically equating the MULTIPLE instances of Trump-inspired terrorists with ONE instance of the guy who shot at the Republican softball team practice. Or equating Joe Biden’s joking about fighting Trump with Trump’s laughing at the idea of shooting migrants.

The idea that ONE instance balances a SERIES of instances is just… amazing.

I give up predicting his demise!

Long time no see, my man! How have you been? Health ok as it can be?

Concerned lizards want to know, if it is not too personal.
