Because of course Trump is consorting with conspiracy nuts. He encourages it.

He had that 2-person black cult group behind him at every rally (you know the ones), and now he’s got the Q-anon nuts. This is all planned to maximize the chaos and take advantage of their low-information supporters.

Chinese writer Lu Xun, writing about the backwardness of most Chinese at the turn of the 20th century wrote a short story called “The Real Story of Ah-Q” The narrator said that in fact no one knew his real name, but the “Q” looked like the gaping face of the ignorant people he saw all around.

I kind of dislike the way “veterans are somehow responsible for mass shooting” frames.

This argument includes things like JROTC as “military adjacent.”

pewresearch.org (percentage of veterans is approximately 10% of the population, not counting active duty, reservists, National Guard, &c)

Wingnut militias aim at recruiting veterans.

This is the left’s version of the right-wing video game argument. Are some veterans killers? Sure. Do they represent an outsized proportion of all killers? Probably not.

Currently, about 9 of ten veterans are men. The absolute number of veterans is expected to fall, while the percentage of women is expected to double in the next few years.

A more accurate representation would be men make up the vast majority of killers, not veterans.

A lot of news outlets link PTSD with mass murders (as if PTSD was a phenomenon which only occurs to military personnel). In the past, before PTSD was defined well, it was associated with “cowardice.” (It is one of those mental illnesses that Trump wants to have executed though.)

This article
connectingvets.radio.com
talks about the Thousand Oaks murderer. They cite an ABC report, getting the statistics wrong because the network was the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and their statistics are about Australia.

The article talks about access to military training and firearms in Australia. Since firearms are well regulated after the Port Arthur massacre, I think they missed it by that much (firearms regulations, not PTSD). And it’s not like every yahoo in the USA can’t get access to guns.

Prior to 9/11, the worst mass-murder was the Oklahoma City bombing. Timothy McVeigh didn’t use a gun; he used fertilizer and fuel oil. After that, the Feds immediately put licensing and restrictions on who could buy fertilizer and how much at a time.

And Australia has military vets with PTSD, and they don’t go on shooting rampages. Are American veterans somehow different?

Holy Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, who the hell is this guy when he’s at home? If banality were currency, Young Ben Sasse would be an ATM. But this has been his riff ever since he got into politics. We don’t make our kids bale enough hay, or read enough de Tocqueville, or chop enough cotton, and that’s why everything’s gone to hell in an ox-cart ever since the band gazebo burned down. Young Ben Sasse’s political career has been a production of The Music Man directed by Roger Corman.

The problem isn’t the military persay. The problem is that the military, like so many other institutions in our country, have been fully absorbed into the white supremacy structure that is underlaid beneath damn near everything in this country, but especially coming back with a vengeance the last couple of decades or so it seems.

Sasse said he will continue to fight for limited government, border security, agriculture and pro-life policies. He said most everything else should be left to the state.

Limited government. Sure, Jan. You just want to limit the things you don’t like. You’re all in on the Republican Tax Scam.

Agriculture: Trump is destroying our state’s economy and you’re all in on his tariffs.

Pro-life policies: Like every wingnut, everything you do is deeply anti-life. Cut food stamps. Promote abstinence sex education as if that’s the only sex education.

Douchecanoe, we’re seven hundred miles from the nearest border (Saskatchewan). Unless you mean border security with ebul weed-soaked liberal Colorado.

Leave most everything to the state? You’re all in on farmer bailouts. Where do you think that money came from? Not Lincoln. You were all in on the Feds paying for fixing the irrigation tunnel in Wyoming that collapsed in all the rain a couple weeks ago though because Panhandle farmers in Scott’s Bluff and Sioux Counties suddenly had their irrigation supply cut off.

We get hit by tornadoes, Nebraska is right there asking for FEMA relief. Anyone else, to hell with them.

Maybe. But more likely she didn’t follow up her first debate performance with a similarly stellar one, and so failed to build on what she’d started. Some suggested she wasn’t really prepared to be under attack by the ‘1 percenters’ and that hurt. We’ll see what happens in the next debate(s).

Good job, GOP.

Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry office also issued a warning to its residents Monday, saying Venezuelans should postpone their travels or exercise caution when traveling as a result of the events in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.
The statement posted by the Foreign Ministry said that the “recent proliferation of violent acts and hate crimes” need to be considered by those planning to travel into the US.
“These increasing acts of violence have found an echo and support in the conversations and actions impregnated by racial discrimination and hatred against migrant populations, pronounced and executed by the supremacist elite who holds political power in Washington,” the statement read in part.

Texas gun laws will be more lenient starting Sept. 1 (KHOU TV, Houston)

Some people were surprised the Dayton mass shooter was able to legally order an AK-47-style rifle online from a Texas dealer.

The Texas Legislature passed 10 pro-Second Amendment bills during the 2019 session. They will take effect on September 1.

The Lone Star State already had some of the most lenient gun laws in the country:

(more, with video, 1:40 on gun control laws in Texas).

These are among the new laws that will take effect on Sept. 1:

Texans who legally own firearms will be able to carry them in public after a state or natural disaster is declared. The law came after complaints Harvey victims weren’t able to take their guns during mandatory evacuations.
Licensed handgun holders can legally carry in places of worship unless given “effective oral or written notice” or warning that weapons were banned from the property. Places of worship will still be able to ban weapons.
Landlords won’t be able to ban renters from having guns in their apartments.
School districts can no longer ban the possession of firearms that are stored in locked vehicles.

Texas is trying to one-up Utah. They’re trying to kill us all.

Mass Shootings Result of Teaching Evolution Christians Arm Yourself Against the Atheists!

(He’s calling to kill atheists because of evolution, which has nothing to do with atheism.)

Mass shootings of course have nothing to do with weapons-of-war being available to any chowderhead with enough money.

This is the same nonsense I wrote a letter about to my regional paper debunking the same claim “atheists cause mass shootings.” Never mind that by percentage, atheists are the lowest by percentage of criminal populations, have the lowest teen pregnancy rates, near-lowest divorce rates.

But Christians want to kill us because of evolution. The faith must be defended at all cost.

Moreover, California gets discovery if Trump actually goes through with a lawsuit (and he’s famous for not doing that). That discovery could include his taxes.

Do you mean on the Washington clock (in which case you’re right, it’s shocking that he’s either still up or already so, and disturbingly seems more lucid than usual for this hour) or the Doomsday Clock?

‘Cause I fear you’re right either way.

As expected, two typhoons have developed in parallel:

For several days the various models have been in conflict about how these two will interact, but most forecasters are going with the idea that the one of the left (Lekima) will graze the Chinese coast. The other, Krosa, is going north for a while but after that it is unclear if it will hit Japan.

Anyway, major typhoons abrewing.

re: #98 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

At least there’s almost zero risk of Krosa catching Lekima, or the other way ‘round since Krosa must have been birthed first, and combining into one super-storm?

Not sure if I need a sarc tag for that or not…

When looking at Twitter feeds gets to crazy, I’ll go to sane places like YouTube (lol).

Tonight I learned:

Atheists cause mass-murders because of evolution, so they should be killed.

Tornadoes are fake. (My home owner’s insurance company would beg to differ on payouts for damages twice in one year last year.)

Your sexuality can be “cured” by taking a pill (and reading the Qur’an).

Jesus didn’t need vaccines so you don’t either (I assume you should keep your indoor plumbing).

Librarians are soulless demonic clones. (I thought that was gingers. /s) I’ll grant my librarian wife does not accept the assertion of a soul, but since her hair went from ginger to grey in her twenties, did she become ensouled then?

Measles aren’t real because they’re not in the Bible.

Did #MoscowMitch ever denounce Flip Benham and Operation Rescue’s protests in front of the private homes of doctors who provided abortions to women who needed them? If not, #MassacreMitch needs to STFD and STFU.

Did he ever denounce clinic protestors, clinic bombers, clinic arsonists, death threats from “right-to-killers,” &c?

re: #99 Chrysicat

The model output gifs are far too large to post here.

One scenario: Lekima grazes Shanghai, then takes a sharp left turn and heads to Beijing, still remaining a tropical storm inland. Bad news for millions of Chinese. Meanwhile, Krosa meanders north, doesn’t quite get to Japan, and then gets swept out the gulf of Alaska where it is a large extratropical storm that merges with the persistent Alaskan low pressure system that sits south of Alaska.

Second scenario: Lekima hits Shanghai directly (not good given that massive city is essentially at sea level), then moves on to Manchuria after which it merges with the typical low pressure systems. Meanwhile, Krosa heads north but then gets pulled to the left and hits Shikoku, survives hitting Japan and goes into the Sea of Japan, then hits Japan again in Hokkaido. Bad news for the Japanese.

Third scenario: Lekima moves northwest and hits the Korean peninsula (though it will be weakened by interaction with Kyushu) where it dissipates. Bad news for Koreans. Krosa never makes it to land (save a few islands) and gets torn apart east of Japan by large scale atmospheric dynamics.

Anyway, this is typhoon season and the western Pacific usually generates quite a few more storms than the Atlantic. Japan tends to get a lot of rain during typhoon season though usually not very high winds; most damage is done by flooding. Same in northern China. But to the south there is often catastrophic damage.

In the future, sea level rise will doom any port city that is on the side of an ocean that gets tropical storms.

No, he didn’t. He has consistently been supportive of terrorists against women’s health clinics.

Well, it is late and I am off for the rack.

Beto threw an F bomb and bs bomb in his comments regarding dRumpf today.

Here’s a good question: do the rest of the candidates do the same thing in the next debates?

We are talking about dRumpf here. He is an asshole, a liar, a misogynist, a conman, a racist motherfucker, a sociopath, and the POTUS.

Let us see what happens tomorrow.

I get the feeling he is not going to get the reception he thinks he is going to get in El Paso tomorrow.
