When Trump Is Gone, Don’t Let Right-Wingers Pretend They Were Innocent

Like the Germans that lived near Nazi death camps, they will claim “We didn’t know.” BUT THEY DID.
Terrorism • Views: 35,145

A few years ago, after the marches in Charlottesville, I added (extinguisher of tiki torches) to my nym here. I’ve made various other changes over the years, such as when I snarked on the non-existent massacre at Bowling Green. But I kinda let this little comment ride, because it reflects how I feel about America right now, and our duty as decent citizens to unite against the growing white supremacist hate.

A day ago, it was noted that Trump cannot label these mass shootings as terrorism, because to do so would implicate his followers as terrorists, and himself as the inciter-in-chief:

“This is a clear manifestation of the political discourse that has taken place in the country over the past two years or so,” one Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official told The Daily Beast. “It cannot be blamed on mental health. This is an ideology-driven hate crime. This is terrorism and the White House has trouble labeling it as such. It is very frustrating.

And then there’s this today:

“How far is it from Trump’s saying this ‘is an invasion’ to the shooter in El Paso declaring ‘his attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas?’ Not far at all,” Biden will say. “In both clear language and in code, this president has fanned the flames of white supremacy in this nation.”

It is tempting to blame this all on Trump.

But Trump is just one man. It is the right-wing news media that give him cover by lying to their audiences. It is those audiences of gullible frightened old white people who eagerly drink up the hate.

What Joaquin Castro has done has to be just the beginning. We need to name-and-shame each and every one of Trump’s enthusiastic supporters. By this point they know.

They fucking KNOW.

No letting them cling to the excuses that the Germans living near the concentration camps, that they “didn’t know what was happening and now that they do, they are shocked.”

Generallismo Francisco Franco’s followers were allowed to live their lives openly, without fear of reprisal. This is being re-evaluated in Spain - FINALLY.

They must be held accountable for what they have done, for what they are doing, for what they will do. They must not be let off the hook for this. Not like the “pacto de olvido” in Spain that has allowed Franco’s sick & deviant supporters to pretend that while bad things happened, sure, that’s all in the past, and besides the Other Guys did bad stuff too…

We must drag these evil Trump supporters out into the full glare of media name & shame. We must humiliate them. We must hang Trump around their necks and stigmatize them so that they live their every day henceforth in a state of deep guilt and embarassment.

What Joaquin Castro is doing must be only the first step in this process.

REP JOAQUIN CASTRO: I’ve heard so many stories from folks the last few years, but in particular the last few months as his campaign has started to intensify, about how they don’t feel safe. These are brown-skinned people that can’t hide their skin color. They can’t hide themselves in public. He’s made them a constant target. they can’t get away from that. Every time they go outside, they’re fearful. So, yeah, you’ve got a lot of people in this country that are living in fear because of this president. And what I’m asking for is for people who are making contributions to that effort to think twice about it, and I’m directly asking the president to stop spending money on campaign ads that target an entire community and inspire shooters like the one in El Paso to go do what he did.

I lived in Spain after Franco died.

Coins still circulated with Franco’s image (they were never withdrawn from circulation until Spain joined the Eurozone).

While Andalucia was treated the worst under his regime, he still had open supporters there even after he died.

I’ve got a 50 peseta coin in a drawer in a desk in my home office with Franco’s big fascist face on the front of it, dated 1966.

The man personified the “dick” in dictator.

Still didn’t keep us from maintaining US Navy and AF bases in Rota and Moron, though. Geopolitics and shit.

Also, we can not ignore France’s role in its intellectual inspiration for these attacks.

The intellectuals of the French right and their enablers in France deserve all the fury they can get. Fuck you Renaud Camus.

lol that will happen

Just remember how Anders Breivik was once praised by a National Front member (4 years before the Paris attacks) as a “modern day Charles Martel”.

And Richard Millet arguing that Breivik is what Norway deserved.

Then you have Renaud Camus and other far-right French thinkers who peddle this rubbish. In their context, it’s “Muslims”, but they’re too dumb to realize that their rhetoric can easily be co-opted in other settings that don’t have to apply towards Muslims in other countries. As is the case with Hispanics here in North America.

Too bad the Francophile Mexican elites in Ciudad de Mexico or the rich Mexican expats living in France with their tri-color profile filters won’t be able to grasp that.

Things the good guy with the gun wasn’t able to do:
1. Stop the man from stabbing a woman right in front of him.
2. Be enough of a threat that his presence, and the presence of the gun, would stop the man from committing the murder.

Thus, do not think the gun will stop people who want to kill.

Good news post.

Trying to get friends/Fellow writers to give me reviews on Amazon/Goodreads. It’s essential if you want people to notice you, but it takes time to get people to ready/write a review.

Got this gem yesterday night

This was a funny, weird, trip of a book. Take Douglas Adams, Max Barry, and Tom Robbins and add in a dash of Bill Nye the Science Guy, and you might end up with something like research. David Sedaris, Michael Connelly, and Jim Butcher come to mind as well. There is also a nice dose of authority, history, and an education in too many topics to name. If you’re looking for something different, give this a whirl.

I’ll take it.

I really want a reporter to demand that the moron explain IN DETAIL and with SPECIFIC EXAMPLES exactly what is “quantitative tightening/easing”.

I actually wanted someone to demand that Sarah Palin do the same when she kept mentioning it in an attempt to show how smart she was about economics.

Don’t forget the “Chicago Boys” sent by Milton Friedman to implement the “free market on steroids” that eventually drove Pinochet out of power. Until he died Friedman saw nothing wrong with Pinochet’s police state which was in direct contradiction to Friedman’s insistence that free markets created social and political freedom.

The traitors should have been hanged and their property confiscated after the Civil War. It was the legal norm in nation states at the time and it would not have been questioned except, of course, by the doomed traitors themselves. Instead, they were forgiven and allowed back into power. This policy of national reconciliation after the Civil War turned out to be one of the worst mistakes in American history, perhaps the crucial mistake that could yet lead to our downfall. The ex-Confederates, being amoral traffickers in human flesh, naturally knew nothing but to extort the highest price they could possibly get, and the rest of the country willingly paid. Jim Crow, the “Lost Cause” myth, and a full century of continued segregation and oppression were that price. The effects are still very much with us. Just yesterday, a lady I know started in about the kindly masters and the benefits of slavery. I told her I did not want to hear it.

General George Thomas of Virginia, who was ostracized by his family for refusing to betray his country, possibly said it best.

[T]he greatest efforts made by the defeated insurgents since the close of the war have been to promulgate the idea that the cause of liberty, justice, humanity, equality, and all the calendar of the virtues of freedom, suffered violence and wrong when the effort for southern independence failed. This is, of course, intended as a species of political cant, whereby the crime of treason might be covered with a counterfeit varnish of patriotism, so that the precipitators of the rebellion might go down in history hand in hand with the defenders of the government, thus wiping out with their own hands their own stains; a species of self-forgiveness amazing in its effrontery, when it is considered that life and property—justly forfeited by the laws of the country, of war, and of nations, through the magnanimity of the government and people—was not exacted from them.

worth mentioning that this “failed hit piece book” written by somebody who “knows nothing about me”… Trump was so upset he sued for libel. He thought his money and his many lawyers would intimidate O’Brien into a quick apology and settlement.

Sadly for Trump, the NYT stood by O’Brien and put up their own lawyers. Trump committed perjury repeatedly in his deposition. The case was ultimately dismissed, Trump ended up having to pay attorney’s fees for both sides, and all he “won” was that the financial documents produced during discovery were sealed, and O’Brien signed an NDA.

I was in a real state of anger & despair yesterday, and it didn’t help that I’ve been dealing with my pro-Trump relatives, who spout the same lame old excuses, and then just go silent when those excuses are shown to be illogical, irrelevant and just plain lies.

I’m thinking about doing a page on what is actually causing them to start to soften in their Trump-support: the “War on Farmers” that Trump is waging. Most recent casualty is the US Dep’t of Agriculture. To the strident far-right extremist freaks, it’s just another “damn gummint bureaucracy” - but to farmers, it’s a vital resource that does the research and support that helps them survive.

What do you think? Should I do a deeper dive into this?

It would be a way of turning my frustrating experiences with my midwestern/Wisconsin relatives into something useful, I guess …

re: #53 Khal Wimpo (the extinguisher of tiki torches)

Thanks for promoting, boss!

It would be a way of turning my frustrating experiences with my midwestern/Wisconsin relatives into something useful, I guess …

yes please

The GOP are the enemy. They’ve weaponized their base to commit criminal acts against immigrants, minorities, and others chosen by Trump.

Lots of others. When I wrote my paper on pogroms, I wrote it with how the right was scapegoating Muslims during Obama’s early years but now I’m seeing the similarities even more with how all non whites.

+48D for me as well (no surprise, personally, I would class myself as +99D).

But that NYT quiz also brought out one other important point:

So although the term “identity politics” is often wielded to criticize the Democrats for focusing on race and gender, Republicans are typically more susceptible to appeals based on their shared identity than Democrats,

Quite true, but in the case of what seems like most of today’s Republicans, that “identity” - white, English-speaking, Protestant, “conservative”* - is what they imagine the default “identity” for the whole country should be.

I.e., unthinkingly deferential to power hierarchies

Considering its French origins, can anyone imagine a Republican in 2003 using any theory popularized by the French back then?

I guess that’s one silver lining of the anti-French hysteria - that even right-wing French ideologies would have been thrown in the gutter for being French along with Dom Perignon bottles.

It’s textbook paranoia. Creeping, invisible, all-powerful forces are OUT TO GET YOU!!!

Only way to fight them off is to wake everybody else up - and the means to do that is to commit random acts of violence until everyone is as terrified as you are.

Yeah, a shit ton of smoke. Looked to me like it that car had a blown head gasket.

I had a big old lead sled of that vintage as my first car, and the state of Detroit V-8s back then was that they often burned nearly almost as much oil as gasoline.

Something I’ve noticed that tells me we have made progress: back in the 70s, when cars drove by, a few seconds later, you’d smell the exhaust. Even out in the country, where we lived.

Today, I lived about 50 years from a 6-lane road here in Los Angeles. Constant traffic. Don’t smell exhaust at all - or, only when a big diesel truck comes down the alley next to me.

Pollution controls - denounced as “commie gadgets” by reactionary freaks back in the 70s, have made it so we’re not all choking to death on fumes.

I have a lot of “conservative” principles.

I am a big fan of free markets, personal responsibility and individual initiative.

But I also want markets to function for everyone, not just the monopoly players. I want to see a government that is also responsible for its citizens’ well being and I have no problem with employees and consumers joining together to optimize their bargaining power and not just investors.

And the GOP abandoned any principles ages ago in an attempt to cling to power.

debacle. oh dear

New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman told CNN that aides to President Trump think he behaved disastrously yesterday while he was supposed to be consoling the victims of the El Paso and Dayton shootings.

Said Haberman: “Most people - while they would I suspect not say that publicly - will privately admit that yesterday was something of a debacle. These are not the headlines they wanted to see. They wanted him to go in and behave differently. The goal was to go in and get out with as little news as possible.”

If Warren or Harris get the nomination, they should pick Beto for VP and make him the Democratic ambassador to Texas.

If, for some reason Biden gets it, I’m not sure what I want. I would prefer a woman as VP, but I think I’d rather have Harris as AG and Warren as Secretary of Economics (all of the economic roles) than VP.

I have no problem giving him MORE credit for inspiring the shootings.

Yeah, this reaction is what people were saying would happen, already on Sunday:
1)Trump (according to aides leaking to the news) is horrified by the shootings (but not enough to come in off the links).
2) He makes a wooden, teleprompter speech saying the right things, but with no emotion and or compassion.
3) Newsmedia and other politicians fail to heap praise on him.
4) He gets enraged that he doesn’t get enough credit.
5) He ragetweets, erasing what little positivity his teleprompter speech might have generated.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

And the thing is, it’s such a predictable pattern now that people ALREADY KNOW his teleprompter speech is meaningless before he even gives it.

Yes I think he needs to be seriously considered for VP if it’s Warren or Harris. Definitely give him a job. He’s a leader.

On S.W.A.T. last season, there was an episode where criminals dressed as ICE were “arresting” rich people’s housekeepers, then torturing them for intel about when’s the family home, where do they keep the jewelry, is there cash in the safe…

Some background on how the employer companies operate:

“…In 2009, Howard Industries executive Jose Humberto Gonzalez pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges for hiring undocumented immigrants. A court sentenced him to six months of house arrest and a $2.5 million fine.

“The only Latino administrative person in that company was the one that was charged with recruiting these workers. … They raided that plant and it was in many instances very violent when they went inside the plant,” Chandler said.

The Howard raid was the largest single-day worksite raid in U.S. history at the time it happened, though today’s raid eclipsed it.

One thing they did in ‘The Man In The High Castle’, which I found interesting was

they turned aging Hitler into a somewhat sympathetic figure, by making the guy who took over (after poisoning the old bastard) EVEN WORSE! His replacement, who engineered a coup that put him ‘reluctantly’ in charge, was going to nuke the Japanese Empire, figuring their uneasy ‘alliance’ had lasted long enough, and they weren’t true Aryans anyway.

So much of the best TV these days takes simplistic notions of good and bad and turns them on their head, like how ‘The Americans’ has you hoping the two Russian spies, who have killed any number of innocent Americans, escape.

Ironically, after Hurricane Katrina obliterated the MS coast in 2005, there were a shit ton of Latinos who came into this area to help rebuild. So much so that some locals jokingly said that FEMA actually stood for “Find Every Mexican Available”. I’m sure not all those folks were legal but they still busted their asses side by side with the rest of us.

(Yesterday ICE raids were in the greater Jackson area).

Since the employees in question were undocumented, it’s possible the factory was doing some shady stuff in regards to employing them. Less paperwork and such than for a legal employee.

I would imagine the remaining plant workers would get plenty of OT, at least until some new hands can be brought in.

This is obvious, but I wanted to expand on this thought - the Right always brings up ‘mental illness’ as a dodge whenever there’s another shooting, but ‘mental illness’ is an umbrella term that covers everything from catatonic, unresponsive patients, to unhinged folks screaming in the street, to psychopaths like Ted Bundy, to folks who suffer occasional bouts of moderate anxiety. It’s not just a spectrum on a single axis. It’s more like a universe of spectra along different axes.

Also, IIRC, most mass shooters never sought help, were never formally diagnosed, and certainly were never determined to be ‘a danger to self or others’ by any professional. So, how do you write a law, or form a policy that would keep guns out of the hands of people who generally are only posthumously diagnosed? And what about the millions and millions who are ‘mentally ill’ by one definition or another, but are no danger to anyone?

Just another day in America:

The episode began when the two’s vehicles were pulling into Blount Elementary School’s parking lot, Sgt. Jarrett Williams told the outlet, with one eventually pulling a gun and firing at the other.

The other parent ran into the school after the gun was fired, according to Montgomery Department of Public Safety spokesperson Martha Earnhardt. Tom Salter, a spokesperson for Montgomery Public Schools said the suspect then went into the building as well and turned their gun over to office staff, who kept it in a safe until police arrived on the scene.

No one was hurt or killed but a vehicle was damaged during the dispute, according to Williams. Both parents have been taken into custody but their names have not yet been released and what charges they will face remains unclear, according to Williams, who added police are still determining exactly what happened.

The school was briefly placed on lockdown during the incident, which occurred as parents were dropping off their children.

There it gets tricky, because hunting rifles do need to carry some serious muzzle velocity if you’re shooting at big game. But then again, I’m the sensible sort of person who does not go about poking the bear, so perhaps I am not the best source.

Because Greece doesn’t have birthright citizenship. Unless his parents had lived there legally for 5 years before his birth he was would not automatically get Greek citizenship.

They aren’t serios so they’ll never answer the question

The worst movie I spent money on in a theater was probably the Nick Cage vehicle in the mid-late 90s where he’s a private detective (I think) who ends up hunting down people making snuff films. Can’t remember the name, not going to look it up.

The worst movie I’m glad I spent money to see in a theater is The Core. If you don’t know what it is, think “Day After Tomorrow” + “2012” + happy ending with a big heaping dose of voodoo science pretty much nails it perfectly. So very, very serious, and I couldn’t stop laughing. They wanted it to be “Armageddon” and for me at least it landed somewhere around “Rocky Horror”. There was one couple in the theater with me, and I could tell they thought I was high.

A letter to the editor of the Aspen Times, the next valley to the south of me.

As a lifelong gun owner, I taught my four children, their spouses, and my grandchildren to shoot. I served in the U.S. Air Force, and I was a physician in the emergency room of an Aurora hospital the December night of the Chuck E. Cheese’s massacre.

On Tuesday, Sen. Cory Gardner was in Aspen and said he has no desire to implement gun control. The Declaration of Independence says, “We hold these truths to be self evident — we are endowed by our Creator (we Christians call him God) with certain unalienable Rights — Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” The mass killings in Las Vegas, Sandy Hook, Columbine and the Aurora theater have deprived many people and families of life, liberty, and happiness.

I ask Sen. Gardner: “Are politicians stupid or gutless? Do you as a group lack wisdom to come up with some common sense restrictions or lack courage to do the right thing?” Stop worrying about reelection. Even though you are the fifth largest recipient of NRA funds, they will not be able to buy you the election. The people of Colorado deserve reasonable protections. Instead of thinking the problem is about gun restrictions, think of it as human life protection laws. People in other countries watch violent video games, suffer mental illness, and have lunatic fringe. The difference is the U.S. has massive gun ownership and minimal restrictions.

Paige Patterson, the former president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, is a horrible, horrible man.

Paige Patterson, the former Southern Baptist Convention president who was recently removed as a seminary head for his handling of sex abuse claims, is being sued by a woman who says he threatened, intimidated and humiliated her after she reported multiple rapes to him.

The woman, a former student of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary who is listed as “Jane Roe” in the suit, accuses Patterson of shaming and ignoring her after she said she was repeatedly stalked and raped at gunpoint by a male seminary student in 2014 and 2015.

*snip*

In October 2014, Roe says she awoke to John Doe sexually assaulting her and brandishing a gun. He threatened her with murder-suicide the next day, the suit says, and would often load guns in front of her and say he would “bury her.”

On other occasions, he “brutally pulled out” chunks of Roe’s hair, nearly strangled her or sexually assaulted her. He once cornered her in a restroom and, armed with a gun, took photos of her as he again raped her, the suit says.

*snip*

Months later, Roe arrived at what she thought would be a routine meeting with a seminary professor, who was also an assistant to Patterson’s wife. Paige Patterson was there and, according to the suit, told Roe’s professor about the alleged rapes. When Roe asked that her professor be allowed to leave the room, Patterson said Roe’s family would also have to exit, the suit says. The family did not leave, it says.

He then told her he had obtained a copy of her confidential police report, and had reached out to Doe, who he said told him that they had a consensual relationship. Doe said he had nude photos of Roe that proved she consented to his advances, according to the suit.

The photos, Roe said, were taken while she was being raped at gunpoint in a bathroom.

When Roe’s mother asked Patterson why Doe had been allowed to enroll at the seminary despite his alleged criminal past, Patterson “lunged across the table, firmly pointed his finger in her face and threatened to ‘unleash’ lawyers on her if she dared question his leadership,” the suit says.

Vazquez is viewed by many as a continuation of the Rossello dynasty. There is one screenshot running around where she’s asking the Treasury Secretary to not send her evidence so she doesn’t have to investigate. That raises suspicion of similar chats involving her in scandal.

So Americans don’t want those jobs, but we’re going to deport all the illegals who come in to work them… Something isn’t adding up to me.

I saw a documentary a few years back about employment in the chicken processing plants, which was increasingly hispanic. The conclusion was that “anglos” who wanted those jobs could get them, and that they were not being pushed out. (Although they thought they were, and resented their new co-workers, especially because they — shudder — spoke Spanish. In PUBLIC.)

Americans will do those jobs at $25 per hour but the rich don’t want anyone making that and people dont want to pay a lot more for their meat. Hence…..,

I thought Conservatives didn’t believe in minimum wage.

No, it seems they’re still taking them at minimum wage levels. Unlike farm work.

This guy is from Satan. And this lawsuit explains why the Southern Baptist Convention is a deeply sick organization and is deservedly losing people every day.

Here’s another crazy eyed religious grifter who has those satanic eyes.

At least this appointment doesn’t seem terrible — or does Maguire have some disqualifying characteristic?

Then there’s this

In order to be in the meet and greet they had to sign a non-disclosure agreement which also allowed the Trump Campaign to use the video for campaign purposes.

As a result, only those hospital staff willing to be used by the Trump campaign probably signed the agreement - meaning a friendly audience.

So they aren’t actors (which is how directly read the tweet), just stupid and gullible (and prob violates the Hatch Act)

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned here but apparently the press and police have misgendered and deadnamed the shooter’s sibling. His name is Jordan Cofer.

re: #244 Hecuba’s daughter

I mentioned it in the prior thread. Apparently he had not yet come out to his family so it was natural that their information would not be current.

Wonder why this story hasn’t yet been reported on the MSM yet? Or did I overlook the coverage?
