Gah. I live in the SF Bay Area. There will be a natural disaster eventually-an earthquake. I plan to greet my neighbors with offers of help and sharing rather than a weapon. I believe they will do the same. Previous earthquakes have not produced ravening hordes and I don’t suppose the next one will either.

In the AR15 owners’ imagination, it’s roving packs of Those People. In Lucifer’s Hammer, Those People became cannibals, because pretty much that’s what urban black people do, if you’re a racist SciFi writer.

I was some time ago in a similar situation that Graham describes. Anyone want to guess how many times did my family and I had to fend off looters?

A grand total of O. Yes, the streets were unsafe at night. Some precautions and we (almost) all survived.

I have the suspicion that Graham and Co. couldn’t survive a lesser disaster even if they had everything they actually needed.

So, I have a couple of small websites I have played with at times… and today the host emails me and says they had to quarantine my public files (i.e., the sites are no longer accessible) because something was hacked.

Sure enough, some of the index files are hacked.

In a lot of ways Charles Manson is the grandfather of the Alt-Right. Pretty disturbing how they share the same nihilistic views and want a race war (Helter Skelter). Just go to YouTube and search any of the the Manson Family documentaries, and look at the comments. You’ll find all the Pro-Manson comments are coming from people that have MAGA, Pepe, OK hand sign, Confederate flag, Viking symbols, or Anime in their profile picture.

I’m part of a progressive group in a private Facebook group. Just had someone make a post in there succumbing to the right wing rage and victim game with regards to that movie coming out called The Hunt. They were all about getting a letter writing campaign going to protest the release of the movie. The movie hasn’t even been released but everybody already knows everything about the movie. Nevermind all they know about it is coming from the right wing echo chamber of rage. I was so disappointed seeing this. Nobody has protested any movie with similar themes in the past, but this one deserves it? Give me a break.

How to best approach this to this guy’s employer?

This French immigrant that supports Trump and a major ammosexual posted this days after the Christchurch massacre. Since he’s dumb enough to leave it public and open to comments, he recently started receiving comments calling him out on his hypocrisy and of course his dumbshit buddies are defending him.

To make matters worse, he claims to be from a French Jewish family from Biaritz that fled the Nazis in the 30s and 40s, but still dumb enough to support Trump and presume Muslims are raised to hate “Western civilization” per the Qu’ran (boy isn’t this what Catholics in France accused the Talmud to be centuries ago?).

Anyway, this guy has a rather public presence being a driver in the drift community and being hired to promote and be the face of numerous automotive companies when promoting their vehicles at events per his LinkedIn profile.

How to approach this with his employer based on his LinkedIn profile showing how he is the public face of automotive companies?

Surely no automotive company would want someone who shares Breitbart posts and posts something so callous days after a brutal massacre to be the public face at automotive events, right?

Link to Facebook post (since it’s not able to be embedded even though it’s a public post

so i’m dealing w this guy at work, it would be impossible for him to admit that there was some computer science issue that he was less familiar with than me, that kind of person

now, regarding multiuser and multithreaded applications, he understands the concept of record locking, but no matter how many articles i send him on the use of critical sections in multithreaded applications, he still thinks i have completely fabricated the idea that a heap variable can become inconsistent if a second thread changes it before the first thread needs to access it again, and therefore that patch of code needs some kind of critical section or mutex

What’s scary is I understood all of this. Not that I’ve ever worked on a database, but I’ve worked enough issues where people messed up databases by not paying attention to heap variables. “Jill of all trades, mistress of none.”

Reddit of course already had it copied:

From the article’s body:

“Global warming clearly is a problem, though not in the catastrophic terms of Al Gore’s movies or environmental alarmists,” said Shaviv. “Climate change has existed forever and is unlikely to go away. But CO2 emissions don’t play the major role. Periodic solar activity does.”

It’s the same old, and many times debunked, claim.

Threading is an intuitive concept to me, but it seems impossible for some people to wrap their heads around. Those people, of course, seem to be the people who are most eager to (ab)use threads.

LGF started life as a flat file system, in the days when you could get away with that.

I struggled with building a system that allowed concurrent file-based access and actually got pretty far with it, but eventually the scaling issues forced me to move to an SQL-based stack. A good decision.

Yeah, the issue is that a SQL database is essentially a multi-threaded flat file storage system that has been heavily optimized by years of tuning. While you could replicate the same results (and you gave it an admirable effort… I think I was here right when you made the transition), at some point, it’s worth it to go with the optimized and readily available vendor product.

Right-Wing Site Falls For Fake ‘Marxist-Leninist-Alinskyite Construction Worker’ Op-Ed (Wonkette)

On Thursday, noted right-wing phrenology site Quillette published an op-ed (archived link) from a fella calling himself Archie Carter. Carter was a self-described Marxist-Leninist union construction worker, a devotee of Saul Alinsky, and a Mets fan — and boy, was he ever unsatisfied with his experience going to meetings of the Democratic Socialists of America. “The DSA Is Doomed,” the tantalizing headline read.

It was the reddest of red meat for Quillette. A real working class Marxist-Leninist-Alinskyist union guy talking about how he tried to go to some meetings of the Brooklyn chapter of the DSA because he was sick of the two-party system and was looking for an “alternative.” He attended their meetings, and all their sit-ins and protests, only to discover just how out of touch all those latte-sipping liberals at the DSA really were with the actual working class.

On Aug. 2, the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency asked the state of New Mexico for unfettered access to the state’s employment database, which contains information on virtually all the state’s employers, workers and those on unemployment, some of it sensitive and personal.

The state of New Mexico replied not only “No,” but “Hell, no.”

Just day before the migrant worker raids in Mississippi, ICE sent an email to New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions Secretary Bill McCamley asking for direct access to the agency’s employment database, according to the Albuquerque Journal. Workforce Solutions is the state’s labor agency. ICE said it already had access to Texas’s database, and needed access to New Mexico’s for criminal investigations, McCamley told the Journal.

McCamley denied the request based on the lack of specificity in the ICE request about what why it wanted the information and how it would be used.

“It’s not a secret what they want this information for,” McCamley told the Journal. He said refusing the request was “the right thing” to do, and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has backed him up on the decision, with both of them defending it as upholding the rights of New Mexico employers and workers.

While the department does have procedures for providing records to other agencies either by request or court order, McCamley said the ICE request was unprecedented and the database contains personal information which ICE has no need to access.

“Neither Gov. Lujan Grisham nor I will work to destroy families,” he told the Journal. “We need communities where people feel safe.”

Despite the cabinet secretary’s denial of the request, ICE in subsequent days sent the same email request to other Workforce Solutions employees asking for the same access, attempting to circumvent the secretary. Attempts by the Journal and multiple other New Mexico media to get a comment from ICE went unanswered the past two days.

It’s no secret that the Trump campaign, desperate for electoral votes, is targeting New Mexico, a reasonably solid blue state, in the 2020 election, and has made numerous attempts to embarrass Lujan Grisham and the Democratic-majority state legislature, but no one has explicitly called the ICE request politically motivated.

I agree with Nate:

And I agree with Anne Laurie:

For the record, I don’t think Biden is suffering from the same kind of accelerating neurological deterioration as the Squatter-in-Chief. He’s gotten older since his last presidential campaign, and he gets tired sooner, but he’s been notorious for getting distracted and tripping over his tongue since his first campaign. It’s baked in to his public persona to the point where it’s perceived as vaguely endearing — a fixed eccentricity among the usual political chimeras. He’s still the top-polling Democratic candidate by a wide margin, and he’ll go on being the top-polling candidate… until someone else takes it away from him.

Which I’m pretty sure will happen, between now and next June! But were I giving my preferred candidates advice, I’d say don’t bother trying to undercut Joe — build on your own strengths, and let him have his own ‘clean and articulate’ moment.

And this is Joe as Yogi Berra:

Experimental ‘isotope & liquid-propellant’ engine blast kills 5 Russian nuclear experts - Rosatom

Five staff of Russia’s nuclear corporation Rosatom were killed and three suffered serious burns in the blast during a test of a liquid-propellant engine that resulted in a brief spike of radiation around the military testing site.

The Rosatom engineering and technical team was working on the “isotope power source” for a propulsion system on Thursday, when the accident happened. The blast caused a background radiation spike, which quickly returned back to normal.

It really looks like the Russians might be working on nuclear space propulsion. An air-breathing nuclear ramjet might conceivably have an actual, albeit hellish, military application but a nuclear rocket has no advantage over existing chemical methods except in spaceflight, deep spaceflght at that.
