Expanding your vocabulary, to cover the nature of what we’re seeing from the know-nothings around the world:

Brexit: UK ignores hard evidence as no-deal looms large

As the Office for National Statistics reveals the UK’s GDP fell in the second quarter of the year, it feels like such evidence no longer matters to some politicians.

Mumpsimus is a word that has almost entirely fallen out of use, but which lexicographer Susie Dent has suggested could be brought back into modern-day parlance. It means “someone who sticks obstinately to their beliefs, in spite of clear evidence that they are wrong,” she tweeted last year.

Graft and corruption is everywhere in Trump’s administration:

EPA dropped salmon protection after Trump met with Alaska governor

The Environmental Protection Agency told staff scientists that it was no longer opposing a controversial Alaska mining project that could devastate one of the world’s most valuable wild salmon fisheries just one day after President Trump met with Alaska’s governor, CNN has learned.

The EPA publicly announced the reversal July 30, but EPA staff sources tell CNN that they were informed of the decision a month earlier, during a hastily arranged video conference after Trump’s meeting with Gov. Mike Dunleavy. The governor, a supporter of the project, emerged from that meeting saying the president assured him that he’s “doing everything he can to work with us on our mining concerns.”

The guy is one of those shifty types, not really a fundamentalist but plays to the evangelical crowd (to sell books.)

From his article:

It’s crucial to highlight this element for at least two reasons. First, because our crises today are, at root, existential crises: I fear that soulless accounts of our evolution deepen and exacerbate the problem. Second, and more importantly, because there’s good evidence a soulful account of human evolution is true.

I prattle on here about the root cause of contemporary American political angst is a worldview collapse. We are moving (slowly, more like meandering) to a post-Christian society, and that bothers a lot of people.

Mark Vernon explicitly is trying to provide a third way, a kind of triangulation if you will, where the idea of “soul” and some sort of Christian belief can still be maintained in light of contemporary science.

But it’s a folly, I think. Sort of like the Church of England today is really just a expression of fondness for the past, a nostalgic trophy of what was… and that is all that can come to pass for the Mark Vernon view of Christianity and the “soul”.

He’s also easily sidetracked by shiny objects:

The Front Line of Parapsychology: Sheldrake-Vernon Dialogue 49

The front line of parapsychology

The evidence for these phenomena is dismissed by sceptics with increasingly dogmatic assertions. But that’s no surprise because the data in support of phenomena from telepathy to pre-sentience is now openly discussed in leading science journals.

That’s a claim made without any links to any research.

Sure, wacky ideas are discussed all the time, sometimes by reputable scientists. And the collective discussion of said scientists pretty much poo-poos what Vernon and Sheldrake want to believe.

Brazil’s version of Trump is of course a re-emergence of a Brazilian type of fascism. This news came out some days ago:

Brazil’s Sacked Space Director Speaks Out on Attacks on Science

Last week the Brazilian government fired Ricardo Galvão as director of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), Brazil’s civilian aerospace research agency. In the weeks leading up to his ouster, INPE had released satellite image data showing the amount of deforestation that took place in the Amazon this past June was 88 percent higher than in the same month last year. The nation’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, reacted by calling INPE’s data “a lie” and accusing Galvão of serving “some NGO [nongovernmental organization].” Galvão defended the institute and told the Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo that Bolsonaro had “taken a … cowardly attitude.”

Bolsonaro, a former army captain, took office on January 1, after running a right-wing populist campaign. His administration has cut funding for research, questioned the work of scientists and attempted to roll back environmental protections.

Bolsonaro said at a press conference on Thursday that INPE’s data was “mauled for the purpose, it seems, to strike at the name of the government and Brazil.” Environmental minister Ricardo Salles said at the same conference that the government would hire a private company to take over Amazon deforestation monitoring from INPE. […]

People tend to forget, or never knew, that fascism was not limited to Europe and Japan. Brazil had its own version, a bit squishier by nature (given the populace was strongly Latin-American Catholic). And Bolsonaro, in his Trumpish attempts to make Brazil great again, is doing the strongman approach.

And of course that is why Trump likes him.

The rest of the ScientificAmerican article contains a brief interview the fired director gave.

My spirit is nourished there, and the more it is nourished, the more it seeks nourishment, and to nourish in return. The “soul” is such an antiquated concept. You’re trying to retcon the idea (away from the semi-eternal magical body of the hellfire-and-brimstone preachers) into some rather vague and ethereal and feel-good intangible.

It is an entirely subjective term that cannot be quantified in any concrete terms, it can mean whatever the writer/reader want it to mean.

Which makes it a great topic for conjecture, for poetry, fiction or song lyrics, but nothing beyond that.

Ayep. There was no chance whatsoever of a pardon, and even if he turned evidence the odds were the only time he’d ever see the outside of a prison cell was when they were wheeling him to and from court for the latest trial. They had him dead to rights (no pun intended) and he knew it.

Well, that is *odd*.

Wake up to news that Epstein is dead. Alleged suicide. Not clear if he was in suicide watch/protective custody or not after the earlier attempt?

This whole thing is a Rorschach test. He did it.

Name the He.

Because it starts with Epstein himself, but the usual suspects will be named - including Clinton, who somehow managed to get to Epstein despite the DOJ operated by Barr for Trump’s own protection, to Trump, Barr, Dershowitz, Prince Andrew, and other billionaires.

How can Clinton have managed this, but not taken the WH?

Seriously though, the whole thing reeks without it being a conspiracy. Someone fucked up at MCC. And it makes any security for/around R Kelly and El Chapo suspect too. There are serious failures in oversight there that have to be addressed immediately. For inmate and public security. Ultimately that all falls on the DOJ, which is headed by Trump’s personal lawyer Barr.

Barr’s father hired Epstein at Dalton despite Epstein having zero qualifications to teach.

Like I said, the whole thing reeks. Independent investigations are absolutely critical into what happened at MCC.

But more importantly, the criminal case against Epstein is at end. The civil case isn’t. The victims can still go after the estate. But the criminal case specifically mentioned conspiracy to child sex trafficking. You can’t have a conspiracy without additional parties.

Those parties are still implicated and those cases must proceed. Who else was involved. Who should be prosecuted for raping children. Who should see civil suits against them for their roles.

This isn’t over. Not in the slightest.

In my case, it’s just dark humor.

I reckon that Epstein realized there’s no way he’s ever getting out of prison. Period. So he killed himself, and that’s pretty much the end of the story.

That being said, yeah, there needs to be an investigation as to how a man on suicide watch committed suicide. Sounds to me, at the very least, like some serious negligence on the part of the authorities - if not outright buffoonish incompetence.

What’s Trump going to do? Claim that it’s dangerous to go to the UK where the crime rate and gun death rate is a fraction of the US?

Uruguay? They’ve got a lower rate than the US.

He sees these warnings as a personal affront as is reacting the way he always does when he feels slighted, namely by lashing out irrationally.

re: #145 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

because it sells issues

if it bleeds, it leads.

I have experience with being on suicide watch. Almost 20 years ago, I had a nervous breakdown, tried to commit suicide three separate times and was taken to the hospital. (This was all within a couple of days.) When I got there, I was put on a locked ward with a room check every 15 minutes. I can tell you, there was nothing, and I do mean NOTHING, I could have killed myself with. The hospital made sure of it. Even the mirror in the bathroom was made of some weird unbreakable plastic and the shower head in the shower was flush with the wall.

I suspect the federal facility Epstein was in is not well set up to handle a suicide watch IN GENERAL, not just for him. But this is par for the course for jails, prisons and other correctional facilities, which are not set up to handle mentally ill patients and not just guys like Epstein who have every motive to off themselves to avoid a trial.

For the record, evil psych drugs gave me my life back and that’s why Marianne Williamson is at the fucking bottom of my NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER, NOT EVEN IF HELL FREEZES OVER WILL I VOTE FOR THEM list.

Remember the bodyguard who was with Lady Di? He developed “amnesia” and cannot recall any of the events of that evening.

Odd thing was, the BBC did not mention even the existence of a fourth crash victim. My ex went on the (then relatively new) Internet AP site and read about a bodyguard being injured. We watched all morning, and no mention.

Wife went back to check, they were mentioning the guard being critically injured, but the BBC only talked of the driver, Diana and her husband being killed.

Only later in the day did they mention the driver and his “amnesia”.

Medically supportable. Brain injuries can do that.

Then a neighbor told me that a man bearing a striking resemblance to Bill Clinton had been seen pushing on trees in the area to see which were rotten enough to fall….

The best thing about the Epstein death today is that I’ve hardly seem any pics of Trump. How refreshing for a change.

One sex offender for another is not a great deal.

Something is wrong with him indeed

The thumbs up combined with the creepy fake smile is so off-putting.

It really is. Trumps phoniness and apparent lack of ability to show any emotion besides anger has always been very off putting to me.

It was reported that baby’s father was drumper and those caring for baby are drumpers. They are probably ok with watering the tree of liberty. They brought the kid in.

I know that part
Doesn’t excuse the “pose”

Who takes campaign photos during a visit of grief and consolation?

The same guy who then releases a campaign video about it.

re: #241 mmmirele

My whole Facebook is Epstein, Epstein, Epstein. It’s like the air has been sucked out of the room.

I’m not sure Faceook is an ideal media choice. My news feeds all show Epstein’s death as the first story, the gun-related stories are second. There are further entries.

Trumpworld is fucked in the head. They’re not right. No one does those kinds of things. It’s not normal. Everything Trump does is weird, wrong, corrupt, criminal, etc. And he surrounds himself with like-minded people.
