As I’ve said many times, the hinterland gentry, the local rich and semi-rich, are the heart and soul of the Republican Party. This is the reason they hate Bill Clinton so much. He is one of them, adopted son of a car dealer from Hope Arkansas, yet he has turned his back on them and opposed their interests for his entire adult life. This makes him a traitor in their eyes, and a far different kind of enemy than, say, Joe Biden, a working class guy from the remote world of east coast unions, or Kamala Harris, a coastal elitist (in their eyes) who was seemingly born to thwart their plans.

There must be a revolution in this country. It must penetrate to every hamlet and suburb. This is where real oppression and injustice have their source. Washington and, indeed, the state capitals are only a reflection of what is out there, in the hinterland, where each county and ‘burb has its own structure of semi-feudal privilege.

One wingnut on the board was running on the idea of teaching evolution as one of competing theories (the other was not Lamarckism), and he was trampled (he didn’t even get ten votes).

Just as slave-holding planters needed the poor white farmers to maintain their power, today’s counterparts need the masses. They grift the rubes. When their grift succeeds, they win. When it fails, as seems to be the case in your area, they lose.

Travis County Assistant District Attorney Joe Frederick said Cody Wilson pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of injury to a child under a plea deal with prosecutors. Wilson initially faced sexual assault charges.

Well technically he didn’t plead guilty to rape either. He plead to a lesser charge of injury to a minor. If they said he plead guilty to rape it would have been an incorrect headline. If they said he plead guilty to injury to a minor it may not convey exactly what that injury was. So they split the difference and used a non legal term that described what he did to lead to the plea.

Looking at state senator John McCollister (R-District 20, Omaha) and his voting record and endorsements, he doesn’t really fit very well with Conservative Religion.

The dude’s mere existence posed a plausible threat to a lot of powerful people, including the President whose DOJ had him in custody. It’s not a conspiracy theory to simply acknowledge these facts.

Given the previous suicide attempt Epstein should have been watched very carefully. Yet, he wasn’t. I’ll close with this:

Offing Epstein (or allowing him to off himself) doesn’t remove all the other evidence gathered against him (including the tranche of DVDs that look like extortion material). Those investigations will still go forward, no Epstein required.

Moreover, there’s Epstein’s partner-in-crime if they can track her down. Folks all over the world are going to be looking for her. In 2017 her lawyers claimed to a judge that she had no permanent address but was believed to be living in London.

I imagine if she turns up on the UK’s radar they will have her in for tea and a metric fuquetonne of questions.

Went to see Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes last night at the Greek Theatre. They put on a hell of a show. And the Greek is an amazing venue, despite an 11 pm hard curfew (there are very expensive houses a few hundred yards away).

The opening act was a band that the internet describes as a Turkish psycho folk band from Amsterdam. I’m not sure how I feel about them, other than being annoyed that they ran about 20 minutes over on their set

The thing I find most surprising is not that Epstein jacked himself but that he was given bedclothes with which to do it. I’m not going to all Q here, but a lot of people had a lot to hide. That massacre has been far surpassed by shootings with semi-automatic weapons.

Police believe someone deliberately cut the cables in the early hours of Saturday.

The company said the incident happened at around 04:30 local time (11:30 GMT), when the line was closed, and no injuries were reported as a result.

The tourist attraction’s manager told Canadian broadcaster CBC that maintenance on the line had been conducted recently “and it was a big, thick, beautiful healthy rope”.

The rope is a multi-strand steel cable, 55mm (2.2 inches) across.

Police said that technical safety experts were assessing the line.

This was always apparent, but Maggie ran an article where she confirmed this (again) for all to see. There’s a reason people didn’t like his trip. It was not about the victims. It was not about comforting them or reassuring them or anything more than a photo op where he could talk about how he had bigger crowds than Beto who was running for a completely different position.

Who the fuck talks about crowd sizes when you’re in the hospital trying to meet with victims of the mass shootings? Oh wait, none of those in El Paso wanted to meet him, and they had to scramble to find anyone released from the hospital who might want to meet with him.

The meeting/photo op with the baby of the mom and dad who were murdered by the white supremacist weaponized by Trump’s stochastic terrorism was another sign of how far off the rails things went. How do you thumbs up during that? It’s not even about the baby. The baby is treated merely as a prop, and that’s all too evident from every aspect of this.

The GOP wont give a shit about any of this, because they continue to get what they want - or so they think. McConnell is the one who gets what he wants - remaking the judiciary for decades to come, so no matter what else happens, he’s insured that rights and liberties we take for granted are going to be eroded for years to come.

GOP is truly evil, and there’s no easy way back from this.

Well technically he didn’t plead guilty to rape either. He plead to a lesser charge of injury to a minor. If they said he plead guilty to rape it would have been an incorrect headline. If they said he plead guilty to injury to a minor it may not convey exactly what that injury was. So they split the difference and used a non legal term that described what he did to lead to the plea.

In other words, the study is questionable and her story is fear-mongering.

Studies on Schedule One substances are really hard to do, nevertheless there is credible evidence of links between Cannabis use and psychosis. The fact that Laura Ingraham is touting the idea (and picked the wrong study — there are credible ones out there) doesn’t change that.

Unfortunately, a century of fearmongering, plus users’ wishful thinking about the ultimate safe high are adding to the problem of schedule one testing to muddy the waters.

This isn’t an argument against marijuana altogether, or even against recreational use — every drug has side effects, and people vary greatly in their reactions to them. But we need to be aware that these problems are out there.

After all, if hooch weren’t potent, we wouldn’t be using it.

The dude’s mere existence posed a plausible threat to a lot of powerful people, including the President whose DOJ had him in custody. It’s not a conspiracy theory to simply acknowledge these facts.

My point about the difference, which I’m doing poorly is this: Stalin took over the entire political system. He scared everyone into supporting him at least outwardly. People here are scared, and rightfully so, but their fear is not causing people that didn’t already vote GOP to turn to him. In fact, we had a massive, woman base election because of him.

Republicans backing him are doing it for one reason: loss of power. Whether that is white supremacy, male superiority, or just unregulated capitalism, they’re backing him because he’s what that party has become.

But I’m never going to support him.

It goes back to one of the question on that political quiz that {mumble} posted which asked about punishment versus rehabilitation as the focus of justice; I came in on the quiz at, I seem to have become even more radical in my dotage:

Eric son of Eric (and most of the current right wing) doesn’t believe in anything but punishment when it comes to sentencing. Their whole focus on fixing problems is cruelty, see depoting parents on the first day of school.

Well, we do have coyotes in the DMV(District, Maryland, Virginia). And even the occasional black bear. (Usually when a young inexperienced bear makes a wrong turn from the Appalachians; Wanders southeast along the Potomac River and ends up in suburbia.)

Our major predator, though, is the automobile.But I suspect that feral children do rank up there on the predator list.

Hmm, just got the note “You are next”. Fortunately it is about a package delivery. Otherwise I might be a bit anxious.

I wish they’d ask demographic questions. For the record: white, female, single, middle-aged, two university degrees, gainfully employed at a quintessentially capitalist enterprise (bank), homeowner. But also protests churches on Sunday. I suspect my “female, single, university degrees” outweighs other factors. Many of my friends are female, single and have university degrees, some have kids and pretty much to a woman, they have financial issues. There’s a lot of “there but the grace of God go I” here.

It’s on BritBox, under Amazon Prime. One short season a few years ago. Hyacinth and her 3 sisters (all named for flowers) tend their father, a drunken canal lock-keeper.

I worked in Houston with a gal named Hyacinth. She was from Louisiana and was a hell of a cook. She was skinny as a rail. She would bring in crock pots of food and put them in the breakroom for everyone.

Because from what I understand of the issue from the science POV (and I work very close to the people who do regulatory plant biotechnology) the causative correlation is not that strong. The regulatory science at FDA and EPA has not been totally corrupted. But again, it depends on how the decision was made; science or pure business.

The Trump administration has told companies not to warn customers about products that contain glyphosate, a decision targeted at a California regulation that requires labels to warn consumers that the Roundup ingredient is potentially cancer-causing.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says it will no longer approve labels warning glyphosate is known to cause cancer. The chemical, marketed as a weed killer by Monsanto under the brand Roundup, is currently the focus of lawsuits from thousands of consumers alleging it caused their cancers.

Such labels are “irresponsible,” EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said in a statement. He cited the EPA’s conclusions that the chemical doesn’t represent a cancer risk.

The decision from the EPA highlights the growing debate over the safety of glyphosate, with scientific research often reaching contradictory conclusions. The World Health Organization’s cancer agency has said that the chemical is “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” yet on the other side of the debate are studies that refute reports of glyphosate’s risks, such as a long-term study of agricultural workers that didn’t find a link between Roundup and cancer.
