Isn’t this old night so nice
I hope you can feel what I feel tonight
Little boy’s not getting it right
Trying so hard with all his might

Clouds in the sky keeping the sun away
Doesn’t mean the sun is not shining today
Seems something is always in your way
You’ve got a wide, wide array of insurmountable problems every day

Hey, slip away, slide away
Into dreamland, dreamland
Slip away, slide away
Into dream, dream, dreamland, dream, dreamland

In your own private place of dreams
I hope you’ll find a place where it seems
The road is always straight and true
Wherever you walk is bright for you

I hope you’ll remember these times we share
Hope you’ll find some comfort there
In the meantime lose your cares
You can go anywhere, close your eyes and it will take you there

Slip away, slide away
Into dreamland, dreamland
Slip away, slide away
Into dream, dream, dreamland, dream, dreamland

Isn’t this old night so nice, so nice
Gonna cherish my time with you
Gonna smile, smile the whole day through
Wake up tomorrow maybe you’ll find
Darkness gone from your mind

Want you to be what you want to be
Don’t want you ever hurt like me
Smiling through the saddest times
Could only happens in dreams, I wonder is it nice as it seems

Slip away, slide away
Into dreamland, dreamland
Slip away, slide away
Into dream, dream, dreamland, dream, dreamland
Dream, dream, dreamland
Dream, dream, dreamland
Dream, dream, dreamland

Maybe you’ll get your wishes in dreams this night
Because I can’t seem to do it here in real life
Dream, dream, dreamland
Dream, dream, dreamland

Maybe you’ll get your wishes in dreams this night
Because I can’t seem to help you in real life
Into dream, dream, dreamland, dream, dreamland

Trump has certainly had an influence on foreign relations.

Well, if you are a narcissistic sociopath without any deep knowledge of international affairs, whose initial reaction to any negative reaction to your statements is to whip out your mushroom shaped pussy plug and wave it around screaming “I am smarter and more powerful than you because I am rich and the POTUS!”, there is an extraordinary chance that your foreign policy will resemble a giant pile of steaming shit.

And your domestic policy. And your immigration policy. And your domestic economic policy.

At least the motherfucker is consistent. Completely incompetent, but consistent.

Dog help us all. Just let us survive the next 15 months until we can either impeach this walking trash bag of a human being or vote him out.

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that there are those in the media who think Trump some symbol of “masculinity,” considering they’ve spent the past four years trying to convince us that a man who has been in bankruptcy court so many times that he should have his own reserved parking space and who continues to duck every attempt at scrutiny of his financials is actually a “successful businessman.”

Decided to check the 538 article and really, they’re not even suggesting that Trump’s base see him as “manly,” but instead that they like his “tough guy” appearance. And that’s just a nice way of saying that the wife-beating, brain-dead knuckle-draggers he calls a “base” love the character he played on that “reality TV” series called The Apprentice. These are the same morons who thought Reagan the symbol of “manliness” because he knew how to ride a horse or popped wood when they saw images of Dubya “tending” his ranch. These are the ones who, when Donny is heard to be on the outs with one of his underlings, tweet about how he should have them brought into the Oval Office so he can say “You’re fired.” Yet it’s never happened, he either forces their “resignation” or he announces the firing over Twitter and then leaves another underling to deliver the news.

So when they that he has a “tough guy” persona, what they really mean is his base gets a chubby when he acts like a rich asshole. No matter how much of a lie it is, they love him for it and that’s why Nate thinks it’s going to be some sort of problem.

Death toll rises to 44 as typhoon Lekima wreaks havoc in eastern China

The death toll from typhoon Lekima in eastern China rose to 44 people on Monday morning, according to official data, as the storm continued up the coast, racking up billions of dollars in economic losses and widely disrupting travel.

From the previous thread:

re: #245 goddamnedfrank

You need a 700c front wheel. The 38 is the tire size (that’s pretty wide on a 700c wheel.) The inside surfaces of the front fork dropouts almost certainly measure 100mm, but it doesn’t hurt to measure just to be sure. Then I’d go to a local bike shop or REI. Here’s a cheap $45 front wheel on REI that’ll get the job done. You’ll also need a tube, tire, some 10mm rim tape, a tire lever and a pump with a Presta valve head if you’re gonna DIY.

Thanks. One of the things I couldn’t figure out was how wide the rim needed to be in order to match that tire width.

Good Mornin Y’all. It’s wholesome Monday (Punday) and here is today’s snicker for you.

Dough Boy Dies
Veteran Pillsbury spokesman Pop N. Fresh died Wednesday of a severe yeast infection. He was 71.
He was buried Friday in one of the biggest funerals in years. Dozens of celebrities turned out including Mrs. Butterworth, the California Raisins, Hungry Jack, Betty Crocker, and the Hostess Twinkies.
The graveside was piled high with flours, as longtime friend Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy, describing Fresh as a man who “never knew he was kneaded”.
Fresh rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a smart cookie, and wasted much of his dough on half-baked schemes.
Still, even as a crusty old man, he was a roll model to millions. Fresh is survived by his second wife. They had two children, and one in the oven.

The funeral was at 3:50 for 20 minutes.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

Want to know why women don’t come forward when they have been raped? It’s because cops don’t believe them. It’s because they’re victimized at every step. And even rape isn’t called rape by media outlets when there is no other way to describe it.

Consider:

That’s right; a 14 year old girl is sexually assaulted by a cop in his patrol car, but the headline is cop has sex with girl in car. “Florida trooper had sex with 14-year-old girl in the back of his car: authorities”

Florida trooper raped a 14-year old girl in his patrol car: authorities. Even if that quote is from the “authorities” it shows what women are up against. They can be sexually assaulted and the authorities treat it as sex unless… A 14-year old cannot consent by law. It is statutory rape. Period. That girl was raped. That’s the headline.

It’s a damn hateful policy. Cruel is the point.

Trump admin announces rule that could limit legal immigration
The 837-page rule applies to those seeking to come to or remain in the United States via legal channels.
The so-called public charge rule is designed to ensure immigrants can support themselves financially. In doing so, though, it’ll likely make it harder for low-income immigrants to come to the US.

Turning our back on poor refugees, poor immigrants is not the America I want. And they dare to say our side wants to destroy America. Profanities withheld.

A place where they even close the public schools for Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur, because there aren’t half enough substitutes for the number of teachers who’ll be out those days.

Trump is looking to end nonwhite immigration to the US. It’s about stopping nonwhites coming here. It’s the racism and white nationalist/xenophobia. It’s the GOP that is fine with this racism and bigotry. They’re good with all this.

Why?

Because they’re fucking racists and comfortable enabling a racist white supremacist who wants to deny legal immigration to nonwhites.

For those in the cheap seats: Trump wants to stop nonwhites coming here legally. That includes asylum, but it also includes those seeking green cards and ultimately naturalization. He doesn’t want nonwhites here.

It’s the racism. It’s always been the racism.

It is imperative that come next year, we send the GOP into the electoral wilderness for the next 30 years, at a bare minimum; ideally, for the next 50 years. But that’s going to require getting out there and voting, even in local special elections, even if it’s for the municipal dogcatcher.

It is imperative that come next year, we send the GOP into the electoral wilderness for the next 30 years, at a bare minimum; ideally, for the next 50 years. But that’s going to require getting out there and voting, even in local special elections, even if it’s for the municipal dogcatcher.

That would be nice, but if a Democrat wins the WH in 2020 as I expect, many normal people will think they did their part and sit out the 2022 midterms, allowing the GOP to regain control of Congress.

There was a story about how teens can’t find summer jobs and have become entrepreneurs to get job experience.

The same article (behind a paywall, but it was in the Sunday paper) also mentioned that immigrants were taking the jobs these kids were seeking out. It’s the racism (North Jersey is owned by Gannett, which will soon be a Sinclair outfit). Blame the immigrants for the lack of job opportunities?

Isn’t this pretty standard for both Democrats and Republicans? Ambassadorships are provided to major donors? Of course, in the Trump WH, it might be exclusively to his donors rather than the more generic party donor, but the positions are generally for sale. Expertise in the area is generally not valued.

Hi. Only here for a short time you lucky devils.

There has never been a time in my life when the GOP wasn’t about racism.

As for conservative commentators on Twitter who make the claim “anything liberals don’t like is racist” or “racist has lost its meaning” the point isn’t to get them to change their minds.

Just as in counter-apologetics to religious claims, the point is to address the third person who may not know what it is they’re hearing, to counter that.

Pointing out writer A is spouting racist tropes is to educate others, not the racist. The argument “everything you don’t like is racism” does not actually address the claim, and that can be pointed out.

And that has to be prevented.

For the sake of America’s future, it is absolutely necessary that the GOP be reduced to a toothless opposition party.

I think between 30 to 50 years of progressive legislation - as well as the accompanying cultural changes - should be sufficient to break the back of movement conservatism once and for all.

As I recall, prior to the “moral majority” forming up in the 1970s, fundie Christians really weren’t considered a major voting bloc - indeed, many of them actively spurned politics.

We need to get back to that - ideally, we need to so demoralize and discourage social conservatives that they retire from participating in the nation’s political life. Once that’s done - and I do believe it can be done - than America can move forward……and we’ll be better off without them.

One method is to keep others from falling into the religion trap (counter-apologetics).

All church denominations are shrinking in membership. They poach more from each other than converting non-Christians.

Except the GOP doesn’t need to vote. The can deprive Democrats and their allies their rights and access to vote, and it does the same thing.

Right wingers suppress turnout, engage in election fraud (see the NC district where the outcome was actually stolen), and they have a base that will turn out even as it gets smaller and smaller and more white (and male) with every passing election.

Democrats need to treat every election as though it is the most important, because it is.

after the ‘approved’ two or three lines, you can add an optional, personal comment as long as it’s kind of generic.

things like

- These days, every election needs committed voters like you.

we recently did this:

One year ago, we tested a new postcard-writing campaign to encourage registered Democrats in 5 Florida counties to enroll in their Vote By Mail program. Once enrolled, they would receive a ballot in the mail for every single election for which they were eligible to vote. For four years!

Plenty of evidence shows that voters who are mailed ballots are much more likely to participate than those who aren’t mailed ballots. So, we conducted a pilot effort and measured the results. The findings were overwhelmingly convincing

i sent in a suggest that in down times like this - when there are few elections going on, is a good time to send out other kinds of generic messages.

an important one is that everyone must learn to check their registration in advance of every election to correct any errors or if they’ve been purged for whatever reason, to re-register. we’ll see where it goes.

Ohio was a clusterfuck that year; Ken Blackwell was the secretary of state (and also Bush/Cheney state chair) responsible for purging voter rolls, not enough machines in the big cities… there were people still in line 7 hours after the polls closed because things weren’t moving. They kept enough Dems from voting that final tally of votes that were cast was probably legitimate.

One of the things that killed Pluto was the lack of any safe way to test it. One crack-brained proposal was to tether it to a central pylon with several kilometers of cable, and fly it in circles out in the Nevada desert. That was rejected because no cable of the sufficient strength was available. Even if there had been, planners did not want to think about the cable parting and sending the nuclear powered Pluto cruising off to Las Vegas or Salt Lake City or somewhere.

During the 2008 election, we reflected our mother’s intention when she voted but, given her dementia and vision limitations, she was unable to verify that we reflected her actual wishes (We did make every legitimate effort to persuade her to vote for Obama rather than McCain). My cousin who voted on behalf of his mother with Alzheimer’s voted his wishes, not hers.

But it’s not just elderly whose votes can be stolen — VBM eliminates privacy at least among family members. A domineering husband can vote on behalf of his spouse; parents can vote on behalf of their children; a third party can intercept a ballot and vote on behalf of a stranger. There is no voter id required.

There is no system which is perfect. Perfect is the enemy of good; because a small group might steal ballots or dominate a voter is not a reason to get rid of the whole system.

Vote-by-mail states like Oregon or Nebraska have very high voter turnouts. The higher the turn-out the harder it is to flip an election one ballot at a time through crime.

A domineering husband can do the same with in-person voting, or just prevent his wife from voting at all.

Third-parties intercepting ballots is exactly what happened in NC-9, and those folks are going to jail.

Again, the Russians are apparently not just willing to think about nuclear aerospace propulsion but to build actual hardware.
The possibilities here are mind-boggling, and were seriously pursued in the west long, long ago. All you need is information control to prevent or at least mitigate the ungodly public uproar that would result. Putin has that, and not just in his own empire.

Project Orion.Old Bang-Bang, the famous nuclear bomb driven spaceship. Carl Sagan observed that Orion was the only potential interstellar system we could actually build with existing technology, though the interstellar version would require 3 million bombs and building it would absorb a major portion of the world’s economic capacity for 50 years.

Project Orion: The Spaceship Propelled By Nuclear Bombs

NERVA is a less crazy idea, involving the use of a reactor to heat a reaction mass for a super high impulse rocket. It was successfully tested at Jackass Flats (Pluto’s test area) in the 1960s and would have been an integral component of NASA’s Apollo follow-on program, including a flight to Mars in 1978.

Not a thought was given to what might happen if the nuclear engine failed or it crashed into friendly territory.

Not sure I would totally agree with this premise. They leaders think about all the bad things that can happen, the engineers and scientists probably make some noise about possible shortcomings; the leader-bots think, “who gives a fuck? People are replaceable” This is a very Russian thinking pattern. Read Solzhenitsyn or any Russian lit, look at how soldiers were treated in wars, etc. The Russian polity cares nothing for the peasant.

Iraqi Chaldeans supported Trump. Now one of their own died after being deported

For many in Detroit’s Iraqi Chaldean Catholic community, the election of President Trump appeared a positive development. They envisioned a bright future with an administration led by a man who had advocated strongly on behalf of Christian minorities in majority-Muslim countries.

“Christians in the Middle-East have been executed in large numbers,” Trump tweeted in 2017. “We cannot allow this horror to continue!”

A few months into his presidency, however, scores of Iraqi immigrants were swept up in immigration enforcement raids for overstaying visas or criminal convictions. Many are Christians who fled their war-torn homeland, some when they were children decades ago.

Reminder: Michigan just barely went to Donnie.

WARREN: Talks about her Plan, gives Trump evil eyes.

MODERATOR: Mr. President please take your seat. It is not your turn to speak!

one thing that Europeans do that still drives me dippy is to measure gasoline consumption (can’t call it mileage as they don’t use miles) in liters per 100 km.

That is indeed the most ridiculous thing about SI. It would seem to make it a whole lot harder to calculate a prospective range from the remaining quantity in your tank when fuel economy is measured by how much it takes to drive for nearly one and a third hours.

They do the same in Canada.

When in Saskatchewan, I sometimes get questions such as “what’s the fuel economy of that thing” and I’ll respond with something like “eighty kilometres for four litres” or “twenty kilometres per litre.” That gets quizzical looks and “what’s that in litres per hundred kilometres?”

If that’s really the way the display goes, they’ll still have bemused-to-angry customers in SI-compliant countries. That’s precisely what the Canadians were still drawing a blank about in ‘Mouse’s story; they can’t calculate a competitive fuel-economy figure from it in under a minute any more than I can calculate a prospective range for a car that instead displays burn-rate with anything short of at least a piece of paper and preferably a calculator.

I still say a way that lets you get range with a simple division rather than having to run 4 separate expressions to calculate makes more sense for anything other than someone trying to stress the environmental benefits of one model over another with the smallest numbers possible.

That was one of those where Perry did the right thing for the wrong reasons and has basically ensure that requiring the right thing is an intrusion on the right of a parent to doom their children to a painful death.

Yes. It’s amazing how many people who use a system based on counting by tens can’t come up with that answer.

Or IOW, another argument against “just SI”. You can basically only make sense of things in the format you’re used to, because something as simple as inverting a fifth is something you’ve not done since Grade 9 or 10 and even then likely not even outside of math class.

The particular ‘fun’ of it is that besides South Africa, no country on earth de-metricated any more recently than Canada (it was in my lifetime, because the Gimli Glider got screwed up because Air Canada’s major procedural manuals were still reading in imperial units!).

So I hope for their sake that these people were under 35.

This is so irritating — the continued promoting of the “reasonable” Republicans who remain nameless and hidden, but doing the right thing. Please — I am so tired of this nonsense. The GOP is actively promoting climate change denial — the few little pieces of legislation that they allowed to pass does not mitigate their actions that are designed to damage the planet. No different than those columns claiming that there are administration officials secretly working to protect this country.

Bill Barr is the true face of the administration — someone who cares only about his party and wealthy donors with no concern about our nation or the future of this planet. This is your Republican Party today

Hi everybody! (c)

Just dropping by to share some interesting news - we’ve been able to find and authenticate a wartime copy of the so-called Franke-Gricksch report, the only Nazi document of its kind - it explicitly and non-euphemistically describes the mass murder of Jews in the crematoria of Auschwitz. Previously only a crude postwar typed copy was available (so most historians didn’t take it seriously, not to mention Holocaust deniers). It also mentions the infamous Führer’s order.

We have now published an original wartime carbon copy from the Bundesarchiv:

That came a little bit later. When it first started being available here in Texas, we started asking about it being used for boys. Our pediatrician at the time wouldn’t even discuss it, so we switched pediatricians.

On people not being able to think in any system other than that with which they grew up:

After Canada went metric in the Seventies, they put up signs near US ports-of-entry which read “Maximum 100 = 60mph.”

On our recent trip to Massachusetts, they had a new such sign on the QEW just after the port-of-entry from New York. It’s been over forty years.

HPV vaccine can prevent cancer. That’s like Holy Grail type stuff.

To avoid the horror of actually ever having to deal with a specific form of cancer. Most everyone knows someone who had cancer, and have heard/seen the horror for themselves. Radiation, chemo, immunotherapies, long convalescence, weakened immunity and all that comes with that, and yet there are people who think this vaccine will make people more promiscuous?

You’re preventing cancer with this vaccine.

People should rejoice over the fact that we have a concrete way to prevent cancer. Maybe go fuck each other or something (oh… wait)…

Everything Hitler did was legal: his judges, his laws. The Federalist Society infestation is destroying our judiciary; our voices and rights are slowly being taken from us and if the GOP controls the WH and the Senate after 2020, we will have no path to recovery, especially given the GOP judges’ support for voter suppression and disenfranchisement.

Antivaxxers would rather let their children die than accept that vaccines save lives.

It’s not surprising that antivaxxers backed by the anti-science GOP would spread all sorts of nonsense about Gardasil (sp?). It’s not like anyone ever heard of teenagers having sex after all. It’s gotta be the vaccine. Or evolution. Or lack of prayer in school.

Anything except admitting they’re wrong.
