Decided to check the 538 article and really, they’re not even suggesting that Trump’s base see him as “manly,” but instead that they like his “tough guy” appearance. And that’s just a nice way of saying that the wife-beating, brain-dead knuckle-draggers he calls a “base” love the character he played on that “reality TV” series called The Apprentice. These are the same morons who thought Reagan the symbol of “manliness” because he knew how to ride a horse or popped wood when they saw images of Dubya “tending” his ranch. These are the ones who, when Donny is heard to be on the outs with one of his underlings, tweet about how he should have them brought into the Oval Office so he can say “You’re fired.” Yet it’s never happened, he either forces their “resignation” or he announces the firing over Twitter and then leaves another underling to deliver the news.

So when they that he has a “tough guy” persona, what they really mean is his base gets a chubby when he acts like a rich asshole. No matter how much of a lie it is, they love him for it and that’s why Nate thinks it’s going to be some sort of problem.

The Perseid meteor shower has officially started. I saw 2 meteors within a minute. Nothing since. :( That’s a lot for one night in the over-lit bay area. Visibility is surprisingly good even with the moon tonight. Even at 3900’ elevation it’s not much better.

You need a 700c front wheel. The 38 is the tire size (that’s pretty wide on a 700c wheel.) The inside surfaces of the front fork dropouts almost certainly measure 100mm, but it doesn’t hurt to measure just to be sure. Then I’d go to a local bike shop or REI. Here’s a cheap $45 front wheel on REI that’ll get the job done. You’ll also need a tube, tire, some 10mm rim tape, a tire lever and a pump with a Presta valve head if you’re gonna DIY.

Thanks. One of the things I couldn’t figure out was how wide the rim needed to be in order to match that tire width.

Veteran Pillsbury spokesman Pop N. Fresh died Wednesday of a severe yeast infection. He was 71.
He was buried Friday in one of the biggest funerals in years. Dozens of celebrities turned out including Mrs. Butterworth, the California Raisins, Hungry Jack, Betty Crocker, and the Hostess Twinkies.
The graveside was piled high with flours, as longtime friend Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy, describing Fresh as a man who “never knew he was kneaded”.
Fresh rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a smart cookie, and wasted much of his dough on half-baked schemes.

The same article (behind a paywall, but it was in the Sunday paper) also mentioned that immigrants were taking the jobs these kids were seeking out. It’s the racism (North Jersey is owned by Gannett, which will soon be a Sinclair outfit). Blame the immigrants for the lack of job opportunities?

My mom had made me take a class in 7th grade, on the grounds that “a girl who can type will never have to wait tables.” Throughout high school and college and for ten more years after, I did temp work — as much or as little as I wanted, any shifts I wanted, for 3x minimum wage.

It’s not even a job anymore; 3rd graders do it. A kid who can’t, that’s about as weird as if he can’t tie his own shoes.

It is imperative that come next year, we send the GOP into the electoral wilderness for the next 30 years, at a bare minimum; ideally, for the next 50 years. But that’s going to require getting out there and voting, even in local special elections, even if it’s for the municipal dogcatcher.

That would be nice, but if a Democrat wins the WH in 2020 as I expect, many normal people will think they did their part and sit out the 2022 midterms, allowing the GOP to regain control of Congress.

The same article (behind a paywall, but it was in the Sunday paper) also mentioned that immigrants were taking the jobs these kids were seeking out. It’s the racism (North Jersey is owned by Gannett, which will soon be a Sinclair outfit). Blame the immigrants for the lack of job opportunities?

we recently did this:

One year ago, we tested a new postcard-writing campaign to encourage registered Democrats in 5 Florida counties to enroll in their Vote By Mail program. Once enrolled, they would receive a ballot in the mail for every single election for which they were eligible to vote. For four years!

Plenty of evidence shows that voters who are mailed ballots are much more likely to participate than those who aren’t mailed ballots. So, we conducted a pilot effort and measured the results. The findings were overwhelmingly convincing

i sent in a suggest that in down times like this - when there are few elections going on, is a good time to send out other kinds of generic messages.

an important one is that everyone must learn to check their registration in advance of every election to correct any errors or if they’ve been purged for whatever reason, to re-register. we’ll see where it goes.

I’ve always used non QR skewers on the theory that thieves are lazy and generally don’t carry around Allen wrenches, but that can be a risky bet.

Ohio was a clusterfuck that year; Ken Blackwell was the secretary of state (and also Bush/Cheney state chair) responsible for purging voter rolls, not enough machines in the big cities… there were people still in line 7 hours after the polls closed because things weren’t moving. They kept enough Dems from voting that final tally of votes that were cast was probably legitimate.

D’s in Congress did a whole day of outraged floor speeches about it the week the electoral college was tabulated/certified.

One crack-brained proposal was to tether it to a central pylon with several kilometers of cable, and fly it in circles out in the Nevada desert. That was rejected because no cable of the sufficient strength was available. Even if there had been, planners did not want to think about the cable parting and sending the nuclear powered Pluto cruising off to Las Vegas or Salt Lake City or somewhere.

A domineering husband can do the same with in-person voting, or just prevent his wife from voting at all.

Third-parties intercepting ballots is exactly what happened in NC-9, and those folks are going to jail.

I can’t change my speedometer display. Miles per hour and miles travelled only (it doesn’t even have a kilometres scale on an analogue speedometer). Temperatures in Fahrenheit only. It doesn’t display fuel economy.

If that’s really the way the display goes, they’ll still have bemused-to-angry customers in SI-compliant countries. That’s precisely what the Canadians were still drawing a blank about in ‘Mouse’s story; they can’t calculate a competitive fuel-economy figure from it in under a minute any more than I can calculate a prospective range for a car that instead displays burn-rate with anything short of at least a piece of paper and preferably a calculator.

I still say a way that lets you get range with a simple division rather than having to run 4 separate expressions to calculate makes more sense for anything other than someone trying to stress the environmental benefits of one model over another with the smallest numbers possible.

Just dropping by to share some interesting news - we’ve been able to find and authenticate a wartime copy of the so-called Franke-Gricksch report, the only Nazi document of its kind - it explicitly and non-euphemistically describes the mass murder of Jews in the crematoria of Auschwitz. Previously only a crude postwar typed copy was available (so most historians didn’t take it seriously, not to mention Holocaust deniers). It also mentions the infamous Führer’s order.

We have now published an original wartime carbon copy from the Bundesarchiv:

After Canada went metric in the Seventies, they put up signs near US ports-of-entry which read “Maximum 100 = 60mph.”

On our recent trip to Massachusetts, they had a new such sign on the QEW just after the port-of-entry from New York. It’s been over forty years.

HPV vaccine can prevent cancer. That’s like Holy Grail type stuff.

To avoid the horror of actually ever having to deal with a specific form of cancer. Most everyone knows someone who had cancer, and have heard/seen the horror for themselves. Radiation, chemo, immunotherapies, long convalescence, weakened immunity and all that comes with that, and yet there are people who think this vaccine will make people more promiscuous?

You’re preventing cancer with this vaccine.

People should rejoice over the fact that we have a concrete way to prevent cancer. Maybe go fuck each other or something (oh… wait)…
