The term “hellworld” just reminded me of something from the old Buffy TV series…

There was a season where Buffy dies and they bring her back at the beginning of the next season (if I remember things right, SMG was thinking of leaving the show)… but anyway when they bring Buffy back, she’s not the same and the rest of the characters think it’s because she was in hell. But Buffy eventually tells them the truth, the place they pulled her out of was better, and by comparison our world/reality was hell.

Not sure what that means, but, yeah… things are fucked up and bullshit.

They give the shrug as they benefit from Trump trampling all over the norms and standards, while they’ll hold any Democrat accountable for some 3d party bulkshit who somehow implicates a candidate 4th hand (like somehow implicating Warren or Sanders for the Dayton shooter, while ignoring Trump direct links to the manifesto that is indistinguishable from Trump and GOP tweets and positions).

He fucked over those workers, and we’re supposed to cheer? He’s got nothing to do with that facility being built. It was in the works long before Trump entered the WH. US energy production took off years before Trump took office. Fracking is a huge reason for that. Coal is dying because of that. Trump doesn’t care. He just takes credit and doesn’t see a problem with the pollution any of this causes, all while he blocks wind power projects.

It was a campaign event. That’s the only kind of thing Trump does, even when he claims it isn’t. His language is clear that it’s a campaign stop.

Looks like Russians are starting to ask rather pointed questions about the recent nuclear incident that’s apparently now forcing the evacuation of a village not far from the accident site.

Many Russians spoke angrily on social media of misleading reports reminiscent of the lethal delays in acknowledging the Chernobyl accident three decades ago.

Russia’s state weather service said radiation levels spiked in the Russian city of Severodvinsk by up to 16 times following the explosion.

On Tuesday, Russian authorities urged residents of Nyonoksa, which is closer to the site of the explosion and has a population of around 500, to leave their village while work is carried out in the area.

“We have received a notification … about the planned activities of the military authorities. In this regard, residents of Nyonoksa were asked to leave the territory of the village from August 14,” local media quoted authorities in Severodvinsk as saying.

It’s similar - though on a smaller scale (hopefully!) - to what happened in the immediate aftermath of the Chernobyl reactor explosion.

The Russian authorities are frantically playing the old game of “cover your ass” and are not properly informing the affected population about exactly WTF is going on.

I don’t think Putin would openly march on Ukraine… there’s enough history of Russian forces invading European nations that lead to large regional wars that it’s probably a losing proposition. Fostering a Ukrainian civil war where eastern Ukraine agitates for independence or a union with mother Russia, though? That seems like something he’d do.

As for China… Until the last couple of weeks, I’d say they wouldn’t do that because it’d be bad for business. But apparently, they are of the mind that they can keep doing business with the West while they deal with their own “internal” issues.

On a side note - the One China Policy also has this as a potential logical outcome. If the West is willing to agree that there’s only one China, then it makes sense that the bigger one would seek to control the smaller one.

Since an invasion of Taiwan now appears to be assured before ‘21 starts anyway, and the main reason it didn’t declare independence several times over the past 25 years is that said declaration would guarantee an invasion, would Taipei be better off just declaring itself independent once and for all, renouncing all claims on Mainland China, and suppressing any remaining KMT types who have a problem with being a little country forever?

Maybe they’d be able to pull together a couple allies to try to at least roll the mainland back out of the place after it inevitably takes over, that way.

I said ages ago that Trump doesn’t see himself as President of the United States, he sees himself as CEO of USA, Inc. And nothing has really changed that viewpoint. It’s why he turns every non-political event into another rant about people he hates and things he doesn’t feel he should have to deal with. The only reason they opened up about Chernobyl was the scale of the disaster set off alarms in the West and they could not conceal the severity of the accident. Putin and the Russians are following their standard playbook and continuing the policies that worked for them for decades. They had a brief opportunity to reform under Gorbachev but it was fumbled and now they have reverted to their worst practices. But, given modern information, they can no longer conceal how weak and inconsequential their economy is, but they do retain weaponry that can destroy us all.

An update - the Russian authorities have now apparently cancelled the evacuation order.

So, one of two things likely happened:

1) Someone freaked out at first and ordered an evacuation when it wasn’t really that serious.

2) They ordered it because it really was that serious, but then rescinded the order when it became public, because the situation is actually far worse than anyone can imagine.

Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

On an OT note, I’m reading Becoming. Michelle’s life story is just as interesting as her husband. I particularly enjoy her memories of her large extended family. Still haven’t met the guy with the funny name from Hawaii. Hearing the Obama’s,both African Americans and younger than my own parents talk about their and their older relatives experiences as African Americans in this country. We have come far but we can be better. Make America Greater.

Last weekend’s semi-local gun show said attendance was down. It was attributed to the state’s new universal background check law. Enforcement was lax to non-existent. Now the governor is thinking and talking about having gun sellers register, too. I see firther declines in that gun show’s future.

Yeah, I was totally aware of that, and no, it’s not “unlikely” because of Trump, it’s utterly impossible.

The man is a firm believer in spheres-of-influence. He may or may not believe his natural one extends from the Pacific to the Channel; he does believe that the western boundary of the Russian one is either the Channel or the Irish Sea (depending on whether he considers the UK “his”), and that the eastern one for China is between Japan and Guam.

At this point, everyone has to be hoping the EU takes up Taipei’s cause, or there’ll be some very impressive re-education camps holding the majority of Taiwanese as well as Hong Kongers.

I said ages ago that Trump doesn’t see himself as President of the United States, he sees himself as CEO of USA, Inc. And nothing has really changed that viewpoint. It’s why he turns every non-political event into another rant about people he hates and things he doesn’t feel he should have to deal with. You could easily see him doing the same shit during a board meeting, forcing his underlings to sit there in silence as he rants about whatever crosses his mind.

Where USA Inc is a privately held company, owned exclusively by the CEO. CEOs of large organizations, as arrogant as they may be, usually have a serious level of competence in managing their company, but Trump never ran a successful, legitimate corporation. The media did a lousy job in 2016 in presenting him as the business failure he actually was; much of this is their fault. They should have skipped the laudatory profiles of the great builder and instead produced honest profiles of how he operated. Of course, without getting his tax returns, it is impossible to really provide true coverage of his financial “empire”

I rec’d it, and at the time it occurred it’s totes an indictment, but also bear in mind that there are two operating casinos in all Atlantic City in 2020, because it’s legal for casinos to open in other places now and people don’t want to go to that town for it as they feel it’s what their grandparents did to gamble. So since about 2003, the answer there is “not very”, while the proper answer in SoCal or in Colorado is “very”.

I am not a military strategist, but I would think the fact that an ocean divides them would make it much harder to invade Taiwan. Also it’s moderately large (much bigger than Hong Kong), 2/3 mountains, and its people would keep fighting forever. Vietnam could at least send military advisers.
