I am not a military strategist, but I would think the fact that an ocean divides them would make it much harder to invade Taiwan. Also it’s moderately large (much bigger than Hong Kong), 2/3 mountains, and its people would keep fighting forever. Vietnam could at least send military advisers.

China has been building it’s navy. They could easily engage in a blockade/siege strategy with Taiwan. Lob a few missiles in the process. And then send in ground forces.

And Iraq was a cakewalk. (Amphibious operations are never easy and neither are blockades.)

I’m still not a military strategist, but no, it wouldn’t be easy, and there are other issues, like how much is China willing to spend, are they willing to let their soldiers see how the Taiwanese really live, etc.

And there’s still that massive mountainous hinterland to consider.

As to missile lobbing, there was never any question that China could destroy them. Creating a huge group of potential guerrillas who can blend in with the mainland population and showing that level of ruthlessness to what they call their own people would have consequences for their stability in power, too. That kind of regime is unbreakable until, suddenly, it breaks.

One of our Arizona Dem congressmen (Greg Stanton) is already fundraising off the possibility that Schilling might run. Personally, I don’t think Stanton’s district is threatened. He’s more likely to go after Ann Kirkpatrick or Tom O’Halleran, who are more centrist Dems.

I’m sure that was significantly better than a real Pop Tart (how could it not be??) but that was waaaaayyyyyy too much work. Perfection is the enemy of the good. Make the dough. Roll it out, rough cut the slabs, slap on the filling, top, fork press edges and bake. Frost and eat.

I’ve had Pop Tarts and they’re like eating…shipping peanuts. Blech.

Those that she made definitely did look good, though.

A couple of reads from Washington Monthly:

Democrats in North Carolina: ‘Vote Blue No Matter Who’

Back in 2004, I went to hear a speech by the late, great Molly Ivins. At the time, I was trying to decide whether to be bold or pragmatic in my choice for who to support in the presidential primary. She uttered these few words that sealed the deal for me: “In the primary, vote with you heart. In the general, go with your head.” Knowing that, I’m pretty sure that Ivins would approve of the “vote blue no matter who” mantra when it comes to the 2020 presidential election.

White Evangelicals Like Having a Bully-in-Chief

I’m not one to say what Christians should and shouldn’t believe or how they should or shouldn’t feel, but we pretty much teach our children not to behave like Trump. We don’t need our leaders and representatives to be saints, but if we’re saying we’re concerned about other people’s personal morals, a good place to start is with having a leader who exemplifies what we want to impart to our children: be honest, be kind, be humble, help those in need, set a good example. The Obamas would be popular with evangelicals if these were the things that were most important to them. Instead, their number one priority is having someone willing to lie and be mean who is working on their behalf.

I have a much easier time respecting the Christian Right’s religious views than their political decisions, so I guess they’ll love it if the president singles me out for mockery.

I think we’re really starting to see what I term “the television effect.” I’m referring to how TVs and news cameras brought what was going on in the south during segregation. Passively ignoring the atrocities is one thing. Seeing them out in the open will turn a whole lot of people off.

Trump has never had any kind of strategy. He was just the Pig of Destiny that barged into the GOP/Faux News Pigsty of Deplorables at exactly the right time. Pat Buchanan tried the same shit years earlier, but the GOP was not as depraved then as it is now.

The GOP didn’t promote Trump during the primaries — it was the primary voter who was the culprit. Unlike Trump, Pat Buchanan had a coherent explanation of his vile philosophy but he did not have the personality, the “wealth” and the star power. He would not have won the 2016 GOP nomination; think of him as an Irish Cruz but with a smaller fan base. And if Trump did not have the reputation of being a successful businessman, he would likely have failed.

I think we basically agree. IMO what led to Trump’s win in the 2016 GOP primary is that decades of GOP propaganda via Fox News and Hate Radio had primed the party to be taken over by the first plausible demagogue to come along. Trump happened to be that demagogue. Furthermore with Trump, what you see is what you get, and the pig-people of the GOP base liked what they saw.

In the next open GOP presidential primary, there will be a host of Trumpist mini-mes trying to duplicate Trump’s formula. That will be a shit show for the ages, but I don’t think Trump’s act will be easy to duplicate.

Not sure that’s the case. The constitution itself confers sole power to try impeachment on the senate, but doesn’t seem to actually mandate it. If Mitch decided he wanted to once again ignore senate rules and decline to try it, I am not sure what recourse anyone would have.

BigPapa  Aug 13, 2019 • 7:55:44pm

So my old bigpapa Twitter account is still BanHammered. Not thinking this account will get reinstated. I’m sorta thankful because I had 20k tweets and I suspect if I ever got popular a crowd of flying monkeys could go far back and find tweets that now would not meet standards. So a fresh start is good.

I created @kronocide1 as my new account. Appreciate a Follow if you’d be obliged.

I was suspended about an hour after I created the account, had to verify with a phone. Fixed. Now I’m on timeout for 12 hours. I have no idea why. I followed 38 people and 4 followed me. My few tweets and retweets are fairly innocuous.

This platform needs to get fixed. This is pretty ridiculous.

90
BigPapa  Aug 13, 2019 • 8:06:25pm

Twitter has lots of problems and is sometimes a torrent of shit. However, there are quite a few people I follow that I love. But there are two other things that I’ve valued.

Inoculation against fallacy: there’s so much of it out there and it can be daunting. I’ve realized that I can detect fallacy but it’s sometimes hard to understand it specifically and deal with it in real time but I think I’m getting better at identifying and responding to it without just dishing out vitriol (and risking the BanHammer)

Understanding the experience of others: this is probably what I most value. The last two years I’ve followed a lot of PoC and LGBT folk with a lot of perspectives. I do not have any real relationships with PoC or LGBT folk so this was important. I never knew what issues PoC had with white liberals and recognize the rot of misogyny is not only of one ideology. I didn’t know what a TERF was.

So yeah, there’s some good shit about Twitter. But it comes at a cost. Maybe it will turn or maybe something else will come along. But right now, this is me doing something from my little rock in the middle of the big blue ocean.

re: #89 BigPapa

Technically if your account is banned for violating terms, you aren’t supposed to be able to just create a new account. That’s why Rage Furby gets smacked down every time he tries to launch a new twitter account.

True. However I did a new email and reset my WAN IP’s trying to clear my tracks. Plus, I intend to have a new posture and study the rules closely, and not call so much attention to myself.

Chuccubus could not help flaunting his old self. If I get suspended again I’m probably not going to keep trying. The platform has issues and I’m not going fight it. Too bad, I think I’m a good person and I can contribute and make it better. Even if I swears a little too much.

re: #74 gocart mozart

It has been awful, the way Evangelicals have decided that people who have lost their faith or have questions or doubt have to be pushed out, rather than giving them the space and grace to try and figure things out.
