Let’s try this angle.

I’d like to report witnessing molestation of a lady I respect immensely. Lady Liberty. The attacker is named Ken Cucinelli. He should be ashamed of himself.

Don’t have a problem with the Punk ass bitch or the swearing, but threatening to throw someone down the stairs because they called you stupid seems a little extreme. I’d think as a very public figure you would learn to let that shit roll off your back.

So a guy on a friend’s FB feed is trying to make the case on why we need access to assault weapons. I chime in at one point and ask what defines a well-regulated militia in the 21st century, as the few assault weapons enthusiasts I encounter are all flying solo.

Guy writes back saying be thankful we don’t need a militia (whatever the fuck that means.)

I write back saying if we don’t need militias, we don’t need the 2nd Amendment, as the whole militia thing is right there in the text.

Amazing to see the Screw York Times demote their DC stenographer, er, “editor”…

The New York Times on Tuesday demoted deputy Washington editor Jonathan Weisman following a series of questionable tweets about people of color.

Times spokesperson Eileen Murphy told TPM that Weisman had met with executive editor Dean Baquet and apologized for “his recent serious lapses in judgment.”

“As a consequence of his actions, he has been demoted and will no longer be overseeing the team that covers Congress or be active on social media,” Murphy said. “We don’t typically discuss personnel matters but we’re doing so in this instance with Jonathan’s knowledge.”

Weisman stoked anger with his tweets last week when he implied certain nonwhite members of Congress didn’t count as true Midwesterners or Southerners because their districts included major cities. He also demanded author Roxane Gay give him an “enormous apology” after she called him out for his ignorant tweets about a black congressional candidate.

Criswell Bacon predicts that he knows who will be showing up on FAUX and FIENDS tomorrow morning to whine about how the “liberal” New York Times hurt his fee-fees. And that will be followed by yet another tweet barrage from Metamussollini!

ICE office shootings in Texas blamed on ‘political rhetoric’

Several shots were fired at around 03:00 local time (08:00 GMT) on Tuesday at the offices in San Antonio….
In a statement, ICE blamed the shootings on “political rhetoric” and “misinformation” about the Trump administration’s detention policies….

I reckon it’s only a matter of days before Hong Kong’s chief executive, Carrie Lam, calls on Beijing to send in the PLA.

Hong Kong’s real estate billionaires are calling for an end to massive protests that have crippled local businesses and paralyzed the city’s international airport.

Swire Pacific (SWRAY), one of Hong Kong’s richest family-owned business empires, issued a strongly worded statement on Tuesday. The company condemned “illegal activities and violent behavior” and threw its support behind Hong Kong’s beleaguered government.

“Swire Pacific is deeply concerned by the ongoing violence and disruption impacting Hong Kong,” the company said in a statement, offering its full support for Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam and the city’s police “in their efforts to restore law and order.”

The company’s CEO is billionaire Merlin Swire. The family’s business empire dates back more than 200 years and has had roots in Hong Kong for much of that time. It owns luxury hotels, office towers and high-end shopping malls in the city.

edition.cnn.com [autoplay video embedded at link]

I saw that the HK government got an injunction against protests at the airport, so for the time being, a degree of normalcy has returned. We’ll have to wait and see if the protesters decide to challenge that court ruling - or what other protest actions they may have up their sleeves.

But Lam is under pressure, that’s for sure. And not just from Beijing, either.

That’s weird. “Voter ID” stopped trending as soon as it hit lunchtime in Russia.

In Russia, as in many other countries in Europe, everyone has a registered primary address. If you are a citizen, registering your address automatically puts you on the voter rolls for your voting district. You just have to show up with your (mandatory) ID, vote, and your name is crossed off the list.

Amazing how well a system like that can work.

So how come we can’t have nice things?

Hi.

a) Christians who think a mandatory ID card is the “mark of the beast.”
b) If everyone who is of age gets to vote, then the “wrong people” also get to vote.
c) Homeless people don’t have addresses, which was the big thing which prevented me from voting between 1996 and 2010.

Aside from that, elections are run by states.

The citizen question still turns up all the problems we have here, as in proving it. States where Jim Crow laws prevented minorities from registering births, the cost of obtaining those documents even if they exist, &c.

For example, when we moved here, although Nebraska doesn’t have a mandatory voter ID law, you have to prove citizenship to register. The state would not accept I was previously registered in Oklahoma, even though voter registration laws are stricter there. They would not accept my birth certificate from Michigan, because of an arbitrary decision the county seal was too worn (I had to pay for another copy of my birth certificate).

It was worse for my wife: Because she’s been married three times, the state required copies of each divorce decree to show the changes in her name from that shown on her birth certificate. That required getting certified copies from Colorado and Oklahoma (and they don’t give those out free either).

re: #43 Anymouse 🌹🎃

All rhetorical questions.

But the entire discussion of Voter ID could be solved by a few simple and relatively inexpensive measures. Ones that we will never adopt for the reasons you listed.

And in Germany, you need to show your registered address to enroll your kids in school, apply for social services, open a bank account, register a car, apply for a driver’s license, etc., making it a lot harder for undocumented aliens to get established.

The relative ease with which undocumented workers can get established in America once they have safely made it past the border is one of the things that makes this country so attractive.

But we are going to spend our time initiating half-measures that just kick the can down the road without solving the root issues and spin down a sinkhole of rhetoric and counter-rhetoric.

PS: I just got a friendly reminder from the local authorities that my passport is about to expire and I need a valid one to remain a resident in Germany. I would have overlooked that entirely until I tried to board an airplane or cross a non-EU border at some point…

Unemployment for federal employees is still administered by states.
oui.doleta.gov

The Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees program provides benefits for eligible unemployed former civilian Federal employees. The program is administered by States as agents of the Federal government. This program is operated under the same terms and conditions that apply to regular State Unemployment Insurance (see State Unemployment Insurance). In general, the law of the State in which your last official duty station in Federal civilian service was located will be the State law that determines eligibility for unemployment insurance benefits.

All rhetorical questions.

I agree, particularly the religious question. However, religion runs our government policy, Constitution be damned.

And in Germany, you need to show your registered address to enroll your kids in school, apply for social services, open a bank account, register a car, apply for a driver’s license, etc., making it a lot harder for undocumented aliens to get established.

That would be a very simple way to lock the homeless out of society. You can’t vote (that’s already a problem here), no banking (any direct deposit payments you’re due can’t be paid), registering and driving a car (already problems here because if you’re busted driving a car at your last registered address they’ll take your car and ticket you, and your car might also be your home), no school for your kids (or they’ll just take ‘em), &c.

I don’t want conservative-run states having that kind of power over the homeless: Been there, done that.

The relative ease with which undocumented workers can get established in America once they have safely made it past the border is one of the things that makes this country so attractive.

ID is not what makes the country attractive, and it can be faked anyway.

But we are going to spend our time initiating half-measures that just kick the can down the road without solving the root issues and spin down a sinkhole of rhetoric and counter-rhetoric.

Yes. We will. For all the reasons I noted above (religious people, making sure the right people don’t vote, Constitutional mandate for states to run the vote) we won’t get a system that ensures everyone who can vote are registered. (The Constitutional bar is the hardest. Count to thirteen conservative states opposed to an amendment and it fails.)

PS: I just got a friendly reminder from the local authorities that my passport is about to expire and I need a valid one to remain a resident in Germany. I would have overlooked that entirely until I tried to board an airplane or cross a non-EU border at some point…

You should get on that early, since conservatives have been cutting State department employees and it takes longer to renew a passport.

Homeless can register with their local authorities and still vote.

It is not a way of locking them out of society. It just a way of curbing abuse of social services, registering voters and ensuring the delivery of official warrants and documents, as you cannot pretend not to live at the address to which they have been delivered by registered mail.

Any ID can be faked.

My replacement US passport process took less than a week to get an appointment and another two weeks for it to be delivered.

On the passport, that’s good. As I understand it, passports issued overseas are issued by the American Embassy or Legation in that place.

Here, when my wife and I applied for passports, it took three months. (No appointment required, but locally you have to apply at the county courthouse.)

As for homeless people here, I guarantee you that any system employed here would ensure homeless people couldn’t vote.

The only reason I had a bank account was I’d opened one before I was homeless, so I maintained that bank account. Had I not had one, I would not have been allowed to open one.

Much like Constitutional limits and restrictions, the GOP have become a party that is shitting all over the very heritage they claim to be all about. Now it’s a nativist out there declaring that immigrants who made this country were men of means who arrived on these shores with money and jobs waiting for them. But I suppose it’s not surprising when they saw nothing wrong with selling American passports to Chinese businessmen for the cost of an “investment” into Jared Kushner’s crumbling real estate empire.

Hunting down the origins of that term using Wikipedia [citation needed], I come up with this.

The term is used, as “Judæo Christian”, at least as far back as in a letter from Alexander McCaul dated October 17, 1821. The term in this case referred to Jewish converts to Christianity. The term is used similarly by Joseph Wolff in 1829, referring to a style of church that would keep with some Jewish traditions in order to convert Jews.

Use of the German term Judenchristlich (“Jewish-Christian”), in a decidedly negative sense, can be found in the late writings of Friedrich Nietzsche, who emphasized what he saw as neglected aspects of continuity between the Jewish world view and that of Christianity.

The concept of Judeo-Christian ethics or Judeo-Christian values in an ethical (rather than theological or liturgical) sense was used by George Orwell in 1939, with the phrase “the Judaeo-Christian scheme of morals.”

Theologian and author Arthur A. Cohen, in The Myth of the Judeo-Christian Tradition, questioned the theological validity of the Judeo-Christian concept and suggested that it was essentially an invention of American politics.

In Christian faiths, Jews, atheists, and many Christians understand it as a dogwhistle meaning two things:

a) We need Jews in Israel to die in a fiery Armageddon according to our holy book
b) We’ll strap on Jews to our political ideology to impose a theocratic state, primarily to deflect charges of antisemitism.

Edit: Muslim, Hindus, and members of other minority faiths understand that as an attempt to exclude them from society.

When didn’t they do that? They’re just more open about it now.

The GOP has been arguing against immigration and birthright citizenship all my life. They’ve been doing the same with their claim “immigrants are coming for your jerbs!”

Selling access for anything (including immigration) is a centuries-old tradition for conservatives.

Dude I know it’s a dog whistle. The point TP is making is they claim that they care about the welfare of the Jewish people as brothers in religious arms yet history is filled with them discriminating against Jewish refugees whether from the Russian empire or Nazi Germany. And tbh the really extreme racists resent people like me too as we see in the UK.

In markets news:

European equities and US futures dropped on Thursday, fueled by rising fears of a German recession and worrisome developments across Hong Kong, Italy, and Argentina. Asian markets rallied earlier on renewed hopes for an end to the US-China trade war.

Germany shrunk 0.1% in the second quarter, a sharp swing from first-quarter growth of 0.4%. The contraction reflected weakness in its auto industry, concerns about the UK’s departure from the EU, and the toll of the US-China trade war on its export-focused manufacturing sector, according to the Financial Times.

“The risk of a recession is now elevated,” Claus Vistesen, chief eurozone economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said in a morning note.

Germany’s bad news came after Argentina’s currency, stock market, and government bonds plummeted earlier this week following an election upset.

Italy is also in turmoil as Matteo Salvini seeks to bring down its coalition government. the Senate intends to discuss the deputy prime minister’s motion of no confidence next week.

Moreover, Chinese industrial output rose by an estimated 4.8% in July — its slowest growth rate since February 2002, according to Reuters.

Wake up and I see the UK Guardian covering this while the Screw York Times continues to kiss Trump’s ass…

The Republican politician Matt Shea connected close allies with a group offering training to young men in “biblical warfare” that includes how to use knives, pistols and rifles, with lessons based in part on the teachings of a Georgia-based neo-Confederate pastor, emails obtained by the Guardian reveal.

Shea, who is an elected Washington state representative, later made videos in support of the group, and appeared alongside them at a gathering at a religious community in remote eastern Washington. He also paid the founder of the group money from his campaign fund in 2018.

On Team Rugged website, it is described as “a Christian organization that strongly believes in building manly character and the capability to stand in adversity in young men”.

“There will be scenarios where every participant will have to fight against one of the most barbaric enemies that are invading our country, Muslims terrorists (sic)”.

Oh my!

The two staff members who were responsible for guarding the unit when Jeffrey Epstein died of apparent suicide over the weekend fell asleep for nearly three hours when they were supposed to check on the prisoner every 30 minutes, The New York Times reported.

The same staff members — whom Attorney General William Barr directed be placed on administrative leave until the end of the investigation on Tuesday — then falsified their duty log to try to cover up the mistake, which could be considered a federal crime, according to the Times. Both guards were working overtime. One had been forced to due to short staffing and the other had not been working as a guard at the time, but volunteered to do the duties for the overtime pay, according to the Times.

They are described in the Bible.

“Heathens.”

That pretty much covers anyone a Christian doesn’t like. A Wiccan is a heathen. A Hindu is a heathen. Atheists are heathens.

It’s sort of like the term “crimethink” in “1984.” The word exists to ignore anything embodied by the idea. “Heathen” is the “crimethink” of any religion (not just Christians).

Super. Trump’s answer? Let’s show how strong the economy is by demanding the Fed cut interest rates even more.

The economy isn’t strong if you’re cutting interest rates. It’s the opposite. It’s a sign the economy is sluggish, slowing, or worse. Trump thinks goosing the rate will somehow save his hide from the consequences of his damaging trade war.

People have been pretty good about not assigning blame in the early part of an administratio, understanding that any causes were done by the predecesor. That’s why Trump hasn’t gotten a whole lot of credit for the economy.

re: #181 Eclectic Cyborg

These are the low hanging fruit.

Never look past the policies that made this situation what it was in the first place. Don’t pay attention to Trumpworld cutting DOJ and BOP funding for oversight, staffing, etc. Don’t pay attention to Trumpworld putting incompetents in key positions.

The current head of the BOP is an acting individual. Deputy Director is vacant. Health Services Director is Acting. 25% of the top 16 positions below Deputy Director are filled with acting personnel. This has consequences.

Trump’s actions to damage the function of government continues with the GOP wink/nod.

This is on them, even before we delve into the historical problems with incarceration in the US and poor treatment of prisoners at all levels of government. That the US also incarcerates at a greater rate than other countries shouldn’t be lost on anyone either. Private prisons too. All of it.

And the private prison industry is making out like bandits because they’ve shifted to deal with immigration issues to fill the void being left by criminal justice reform, and the fact that states can’t afford imprisoning as many people as they do for nonviolent offenses.

re: #187 DangerMan

Markets and businesses want consistency. Stability. It makes things predictable because you can plan out how your future quarter purchases, sales, and costs will be.

When you’ve got a addled reactionary know nothing in the WH throwing tariffs against the wall to see what sticks, you suddenly find your costs, purchases, and sales all over the place as suppliers and buyers are scrambling to hedge against cost spikes and avoid paying more than they have to. Some will pad inventory now to wait things out, or others will defer buys until later. Consumers will shift spending, or hold off to avoid costs too.

All of it means that the economy, which was already slowing due to uncertainties finds itself weaker than it should be - it’s a self-fulfilling response.

Brexit, the violence in Hong Kong, and tariffs all combine to be a shit show and the inverted yield curve is another sign that businesses see a recession coming. Trump’s trade war doesn’t help, and is also slowing things down too (for reasons stated above).

paraphrased from this AM’s electoral-vote.com

- everyone knows Barr has ultimate supervisory responsibility.
- like it or not, barr keeps stepping in shit and gets a lot of bad press
- trump hates to look bad
- barr might have to go. (long shot)
- Alex Acosta went pdq. (remember - that was so three weeks ago)

quoting EV:

A nice thought, but probably a longer shot than Acosta: the former Sec’y was directly involved in the (original) Epstein case: Barr is not only in a far more important position (Trump can always dredge up some union-busting hack for Labor*, Bill Barr is at Justice primarily to protect Donny’s orange ass from his criminality coming to light) - but has the shield of official “distance” from the Fail At The Jail to avoid any perceived responsibility. So I’ve been thinking about this kid who was busted with the 25 guns and the 10 000 rounds of ammo and I keep coming to back to this: “Who the hell, besides a gun collector, needs THAT many guns??”

I mean, you only have two hands so you can fire at most two weapons at a time. Even being creative, the most amount of guns you could get on your person at once might be what, around 10 maybe? And those would have to mostly be handguns. I just don’t see the tactical advantage to having an arsenal like that.

If it it were me, I’d focus on maybe four key weapons I thought could get the job done and bring plenty of ammo for each.

Jewish and Muslim religious organizations endorsing candidates would cause a fervor. It’s not just atheists. That’s the Christian privilege that exists. The very existence of the religious right.

Certainly a Muslim organisation endorsing anyone would raise ire of Christian voters.

Jewish organisations would be let off the hook if they endorsed the “correct” (right-wing Christian) politicians. Supporters of those politicians can then invoke “Judaeo-Christian values.”

Rich and powerful are more capable of surviving prolonged instability. The richest and best positioned are able to capitalize on faltering businesses (takeover targets), expand their markets, and watch as rivals disappear.

Everyone else struggles to get by.

Of course, the richest folks think that they’ll get by, when they really have a house of cards.

That’s why Trump fixates specifically on interest rates. His entire house of cards is predicated on loans and carrying costs - higher rates means his businesses pay more in loans. Reduce the rates, and he’s saving money personally and directly.

It’s also why he doesn’t care how much people suffer from the trade war, although Ross admits that they’re holding off on next tranche of tariffs to avoid harm into the Christmas season (which explicitly shows that China isn’t paying the tariffs, but American consumers).

- you can make money whether the markets go up or down
- you can hedge and make less than the market when it goes up and lose less when it goes down
- while no one knows what’s gonna happen tomorrow, everyone pretends or believes he’s got a predictor or a model
- some work better than others over time
- if you cant predict, you’re just guessing and any success is arbitrary dumb luck

- that’s not an investing model or business model.

Yes, 10,000 rds is generally a lot of ammunition. And 25 is a lot of firearms.

I guess to some degree that it would depend upon what one is doing with them.

Feel free to correct me, but I seem remember a basic combat load of ammunition for the m-16 to be around 300 rounds. Twice that for the squad automatic weapon. If one expects to go into combat, and was expecting to ride there, perhaps a double basic load.

A few decades ago, the numbers I saw for a professional trying to maintain a high level of proficiency with a firearm were around 20,000 rounds a year. (200 rounds per 2 hour session twice a week) At the current 25-50 cents a round, that is a lot of money. Reloading will save some money, at the cost of additional hours of time sitting at the reloading machine.

Due to cost and time involved, it is difficult to maintain high proficiency in more than a couple of firearms.

And in real life, generally, only one, perhaps two firearms can be carried at a time due to weight and bulk issues.

Macy’s reporting massive earnings miss. Slashed outlook for full year and next year. Retailer warns on ongoing trade war and damage it’s doing to the retail sector.

Retailers like Macy’s have been burdened by a long-drawn trade war between the United States and China, which U.S. President Donald Trump escalated earlier this month by threatening to impose 10% tariffs on $300 billion worth of Chinese goods from Sept. 1. On Tuesday, the Trump administration delayed the 10% tariffs on some Chinese goods until Dec. 15.

Macy’s executives reassured investors on a post-earnings call Wednesday that the company is in “active discussions” with vendors and suppliers to mitigate tariffs and minimize customer impact in 2019 as much as possible.

Analysts said the temporary tariff reprieve would not benefit retailers greatly.

“Only a small percentage of soft-good tariffs are actually getting delayed until December 15th and none have been removed yet,” UBS analyst Jay Sole wrote in a note, adding that, of the approximately 789 apparel and footwear categories on the original latest list of tariffs, only 17% have had tariffs delayed.

Gennette said he believed 10% tariffs to be manageable but that it would be harder to maintain pricing if 25% tariffs are imposed on all remaining imports from China, adding “there’s no customer appetite for price increases.”

Macy’s now expects 2019 adjusted profit to be between $2.85 per share to $3.05 per share, down from a previous forecast of $3.05 to $3.25.

Wholly crap. The quote in question shown in the Des Moines Register:

“What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled out anyone who was a product of rape or incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that?” he said in Urbandale, Iowa. “Considering all the wars and all the rapes and pillages that happened throughout all these different nations, I know that I can’t say that I was not a part of a product of that.”

My printer just died. It was a spectacular death. I mean, it didn’t catch on fire or anything but started to hemorrhage (black ink) & then triggered a BSOD device failure.

It’s now safely unplugged & plastic-bagged and I am looking for a new printer. Any recommendations? This is for a home office. The deceased printer was an HP Photosmart deskjet.

I use it mostly for printing recipes.

A Mimeograph machine. Of course, you’d need to type all the recipes out on masters, keep them where they’re not damaged, and spend a lot of time setting the thing up, not to mention the horrible smell.

There’s a price to pay for freedom from computers though. /s

I still have, in a box in my closet, a working slide projector and several boxes of slides that belonged to my grandfather. I pulled it out not so long ago to show my nephews and they didn’t know what to make of it.

I looked the town up. I can only find articles in Polish and one in Spanish. The Spanish article notes the town only has 300 people.
