Ouch, that’s gonna leave a mark.

An editorial in Haaretz? Not unless someone brings it to Trump’s attention. I doubt he knows what that is, much less be interested in reading the opinion piece.

I do hope people realize that Trumps trade idiocy vindicates Obama big time on the TPP. Both Sanders and Trump demagogued on that issue bigly.

The TPP had some awful provisions in it (e.g., US copyright insanity, companies able to sue for lost profits due to ‘regulations’ come to mind, and I’m sure there were others), but it would have been a useful counter to Chinese influence. Perhaps it was a net positive, perhaps not.

But it had no defenders in the end. Rightly so, IMO. These trade deals are a symbol of globalist business as usual, which is in the process of taking almost everyone’s job away just to make the Davos class richer.

Yay, more local fun:

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. - Mosquitoes trapped at a site in Scotts Bluff County have recently tested positive for St. Louis encephalitis. This is the first confirmed positive in mosquitoes in the state this year.

I think it would have been a positive net against Xi’s soft power moves in the Pacific Rim. Imo the people who led the opposition against it- Sanders and Trump are ignorant of how soft power is important.

Keebler Export Sodas are a brand of soda cracker they sell everywhere. They are not literally for export. I think the tweet is trolling.

Ben Shapiro is like the antithesis of what libertarians claim they believe. Sigh. My sympathies. My good friend was a Shapiro fan for awhile. Still might be since he thankfully acknowledged he’s not going to make me a believer in that right wing crap.

One advantage of no Internet service around here is no one has ever heard of Ben Shapiro, Charlie Kirk, or the rest of that unstable of wingnuts.

Why should someone who is faced with economic dislocation because of globalism give a shit whether US oligarchs or Chinese oligarchs end up ruling the roost?

That’s an example of the underlying issue that is not being addressed by business as usual, and which gives opportunities to demagogues like Trump and Sanders.

IMO US politics being the distorted malignant circus that it now is comes from a substantial fraction of the people seeing (correctly) that the status quo offers little or nothing. It’s not just a ‘loss of God’ problem. It’s a loss of faith (both religious and secular) that the system is worth supporting because it works well enough for enough people.

That’s fair. I just think that both Trump and Bernie don’t value international relationships at all. There definitely needs to be realistic alternatives. I just resent how the whole thing was sold by people who know little about trade to people who know even less.

I’m not aware of “faith” being involved in a secular governmental system. Faith (in the sense of belief without proof, or trust without evidence) is specifically religious in nature.

As for a system not worth supporting, secular systems allow for change (laws, constitutional amendments, elections). Religions specifically do not allow for change.

Speaking of Greenland, this might be the most elite military force in the world.
Sirius Dog Sled Patrol.
A unit of the Danish Navy, these folks, about 14 in all, patrol the wilderness of northeastern Greenland in pairs. With dog sleds. In the dead of winter. Among other things, they are armed with bolt action rifles (1917 Enfield in .30/06).

“The weapons carried also reflect the harsh conditions. Only bolt-action rifles (M17/M53) perform reliably. The standard SIG210 Neuhausen sidearm was recently replaced by the 10mm Glock 20, as the stopping power of multiple 9mm rounds proved to be insufficient against a polar bear.”

You’ve never been asked to “have faith the system will work”?

That’s not something they request of just Christians, and “trust it will work” still infers “have faith”.

Sure.

That is called an equivocation fallacy.

“Have faith the system will work” means extend tentative trust because I have evidence it has worked in the past, though sometimes slowly.

“Have faith in God” means place trust in something which has no good evidence at all.

That fallacy is similar to the way religious people use the word “theory.”

This might be why a lot of farmers are slow to come round on tariffs hurting soybean markets.

macrotrends.net

This is a forty-five year historical price chart for soybeans.

You can see a $2 crimp per bushel where Trump’s tariffs come in, from about $10.50 to $8.25, bouncing back fifty cents since then.

That said, over forty-five years, with improved production methods and yields, the trend line for soybeans has been relatively flat (with a lot of bouncing), and soybeans are still about $3 per bushel above the average since the Seventies.

Overall, soybeans have been remarkably stable.

It hasn’t been a loss of god problem, unless the god is white supremacy. Racists didn’t like blacks getting fair treatment, so they have been tearing things down since the CRA. A large fraction of the country is so Ok with it they’d let you cut off their left arm if a black person lost a right arm.

Personally, the people who aren’t paying enough attention to realize what is going on are as big a problem as the racists.
