I’m reading a book right now called “They Were Her Property: White Women as Slave Owners in the American South” by Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers. It is a tough read.

Women of the South were not sweet ignorant Southern belles who raced in and told their fathers/husbands/brothers/overseers to stop beating the slaves so hard. No, these women went to great lengths to preserve their ownership of slaves separate from male family members or husbands by taking relatives or husbands to court to assert claim over their human chattel. Previous scholarly work had assumed married women’s property had been subsumed into that of the husband under the doctrine of coverture, but courts of equity would often undo coverture in the light of wills, deeds of trust, bills of sale and other conveyances. And while this was good for women’s rights in general, that it came about because of slave ownership is pretty sickening.

And women slave owners had no problem beating hell out of their slaves, either.

Looks like a potential fraud scandal is brewing regarding General Electric.

GE’s share price tanked after Madoff whistleblower claimed company is engaging in accounting fraud worth $38bn.

The whistleblower who called out Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme has accused General Electric of wide-scale fraud in a move that has sent the conglomerate’s share price into a tailspin.

In a report titled ‘General Electric, a Bigger Fraud Than Enron’, investigator Harry Markopolos claims GE is engaging in accounting fraud worth $38bn. He said GE is heading for bankruptcy and is hiding $29bn in long-term care losses.

“GE’s $38bn in accounting fraud amounts to over 40% of GE’s market capitalization, making it far more serious than either the Enron or WorldCom accounting frauds,” he writes, referencing two of the largest corporate accounting scandals in history.

GE’s share price sank close to 15% after the report was released.

It is satisfying to see Trump’s polling in the Morning Consult poll dropping across the nation.

Wyoming was the state which was most “Trumpy” at the start of his term, at +40. Now it’s +21. That isn’t exactly a promising state for the Democrats, but that is quite an erosion for a virtual one-party state.

The most “Trumpy” state currently is Alabama, at +26 (down from +36).

Pinks and reds are where he is in the minus column against Gen Eric Democrat. Blues are where he’s above water. Texas went from +21 to +6 (not quite a swing state, but certainly a concern for the GOP).

Every place which has become a virtual toss-up (like my state) is a place the GOP will either have to spend money to hold, or sacrifice to hold Texas.

If it was just two states (Nebraska with five electoral votes versus Texas with thirty-six) the math would be simple: Sacrifice Nebraska to hold Texas. But the huge pile of states which are looking bad (Iowa six electoral votes from +9 to -11) means hanging on to Texas is going to be damn costly for the GOP.

Of course, polling this far out is mostly inside baseball for political junkies. The overall trend is clear though, the combination of the normal loss of confidence in an incumbent coupled with the stunning incompetence of the same incumbent.

His incredible coat tails also have to have the GOP at least a little worried about the Senate. (Nearly everyone he endorses gorks on election day.)

The slide bar shows how he has sunk in polling gradually since he was inaugurated.

As I’ve noted in my township (curiously named the same as my town), out of the roughly six hundred votes cast here, eight went for Hillary Clinton.

At least as far as politics goes, education doesn’t mean a whole lot in voting. The neighbour lady behind my house has a sixth-grade education and voted for Trump. The overwhelming majority of my town has college degrees and voted for Trump.

My wife voted for Clinton with her two degrees, but I don’t know who the other six people who did were (I guess they’re keeping their heads down). Maybe it was just the people with high school diplomas like me?

Preferably one that isn’t working for a hedge fund shorting GE stock. I know GE has problems with their insurance business and pension fund etc. so maybe it’s as bad as he says, but it would be good to hear it from someone who isn’t quite so invested in GE stock tanking.

A claim of accounting fraud to the tune of $38 billion is quite a claim.

However, the SEC is investigating fraud claims against GE already.

Their stock continues to sink.

This could be that low spot investors say where people like me should pick up shares. On the other hand, this could be that spot where investors say that to milk money out of the poor and middle class as a company sinks.

I know just enough about the intricacies of finance and investment to stay out of it.

This is certainly about GE Capital, a division of the company that has had rumors floating around it since at least 2008. There is a reason GE stock, despite the fact that the company makes a solid profit every year, has had a distinct lag in it’s stock value.

FOX has been reporting on the melting icesheets there since late July, along with the problems of rainfall on the icesheets melting them faster than expected, and the Sahara heat wave that drifted from Europe to Greenland making the problem worse. They’ve mostly reported all that straight (except their intentional failure to mention climate change due to global warming).

China hints it will choke off U.S. ‘rare earths’ access. But it’s not that easy. (Washington Post)

After China’s hint they might cut off rare earths to Japan, the Obama Administration moved to re-open the rare earths mine in California.

Mountain Pass, which began post-bankruptcy operations only last year, represents the United States’ best hope of weathering any Chinese materials blockade. Along with new output from countries such as Australia and Myanmar, the U.S. mine helped cut China’s share of global production to 71 percent last year from more than 97 percent in 2010, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

“We can make the Chinese threat become a hollow threat very quickly by letting market forces take care of it,” said Douglas Paal, a China expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a former vice chairman of JPMorgan Chase International. “China does not have us by the throat.”

Aiken took a hit over “legitimate rape.”
Murdoch took a hit over babies resulting from rape are “God’s plan.”

The GOP Rape Advisory Chart now has eleven chapters and a special Donald Trump chapter, because conservatives for decades have had a problem with the word “consent.” As such, they keep putting their feet up to their knees in their mouths over rape.

A Texas Republican once said “if rape is inevitable, lie back and enjoy it.” Not to be outdone, a Conservative Party politician in the UK (Barbara Driver) quoted the Texas politician in a meeting about planners being powerless to control expansion of a housing development.

I get the impression the problem of rape and consent is a feature of conservatism regardless of the nation.

This is the delusional fantasy that dominates Democrats. We’ll just be done with Trump and go back to the good place of polite disagreement. It’s a childish view of the world not borne out by evidence. Trump has shown the right they can go very far.

You think they’ll stop?

Trump was elected by people who want to turn back all the gains we have made in personal freedoms, women’s, gay and LGBT rights over the past decades.

He was elected by people who want corporations to run government agencies whose job is supposed to be to regulate them.

He was elected by people who think that health care is a privilege, not a cornerstone in securing the Public Good.

He was elected by people whose view of Religious Freedom means being able to impost those beliefs on society or be granted exemptions from laws based on those views

And he was elected by people who see the second clause of the Second Amendment as absolute while totally ignoring the first clause.

They are not going to go away when Trump leaves office, they will just find another spokesperson, perhaps one who is less incompetent.

I wonder if such a person is possible within Movement Conservative though. It seems every demagogue who has come along on the right either self-destructed, got a knife stuck metaphorically in his back by another conservative, or was outed in some criminal activity which ended his career.

Since the goal of conservative religion is to gain and maintain power, any conservative who does it has to watch out for the next one coming along who will take him out.

While science fiction, Azimov’s “Foundation” series addresses this within the Galactic Empire. Any person who becomes useful enough to the Empire also becomes a threat to the Empire. Either that person or the Emperor then is taken out.

Conservatism makes for inflexible governance since it only cares about conserving power. It cannot change.

These people who full-throatedly support Trump are the same sorts of crowds who were yelling at students with equally twisted in hate faces during desegregation of schools in the Sixties. The same who yelled at hippies in the Seventies protesting the Vietnam War. The same as the Tea Party in the Naughts with President Obama.

The hate has always been there in Movement Conservative, and always visible. I really don’t see anything different. About all that’s changed is the politicians aren’t using dog whistles now, reflecting more closely their core voters (who never did).

Live-blogging the destruction of my county …

Northport was just smitten by lightning. (Northport is one mile north of Bridgeport.) Lightning is now striking between my town and Northport. The wind is picking up. No rain yet.

The deepest “extreme” colours on the radar map are now over our county seat, sixteen miles away. The edge of the storm is over my town; the center is about twenty minutes away.

The North Platte River and Pumpkin Creek are now flooding between the county seat and my town. Winds are up to 70mph. The centre of the storm is thirty minutes away, moving right down the Oregon Trail. We’re boned.

Jesus Haploid Christ!

Our entire yard is covered in hail.

I guess we need a roof inspection.

The hail is tapering off now.

That was the front edge of the storm. It is halfway between Bridgeport and Broadwater. Storm chasers are in town.

We’ll be calling the insurance company tomorrow to arrange for a roof inspection (as you can see by that photograph above we probably need one).

And Rashida told them to fuck off.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) said Friday that she will not travel to Israel after the Israeli government initially banned her from entering the country and then reversed course.

Israel had relented after Tlaib sent a letter requesting to see her 90-year-old grandmother, who lives in the occupied West Bank, during a four-day trip planned for next week.

“In my attempt to visit Palestine, I’ve experienced the same racist treatment that many Palestinian-Americans endure when encountering the Israeli government,” she said in a statement.

SMOTI jumps for joy…

The Log Cabin Republicans endorsed President Trump’s 2020 reelection bid on Friday, nearly four years after the conservative LGBT organization declined to endorse then-candidate Trump in 2016.

The group said its national board of directors voted to endorse Trump after consulting with its chapters across the country.

Log Cabin Republicans Chairman Robert Kabel and Vice Chairwoman Jill Homan argued in a Washington Post op-ed on Friday that Trump has helped remove LGBTQ rights as a wedge issue in the GOP, citing his administration’s policies on ending the spread of HIV/AIDS as well as his push to get other countries to conform to modern human rights standards.

“While we do not agree with every policy or platform position presented by the White House or the Republican Party, we share a commitment to individual responsibility, personal freedom and a strong national defense,” Kabel and Homan wrote.

With these fools it’s all about greed…

Jeffrey Epstein’s ‘Madam’ Ghislaine Maxwell Spotted at In-N-Out Burger (Daily Beast)

On Thursday August 15, the New York Post reported that British socialite—and accused madam of deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein—Ghislaine Maxwell had been spotted at an In-N-Out Burger in Universal City, Los Angeles. She was dining alone with a pet pup by her side, and reading a book titled The Book of Honor: The Secret Lives and Deaths of CIA Operatives. When the Post’s source snapped a picture of the raven-haired 57-year-old, he asked, “Are you who I think you are?” She replied, ‘Yes, I am.’”

Police have reportedly been scrambling to find Maxwell as she faces a new lawsuit from one victim who alleges the socialite gave “organizational support to Epstein’s sex-trafficking ring” and procured “underage girls for Epstein’s sexual pleasure.”

I can drive it here, though I won’t unless I have to.

I will have to order a new windshield from the glass shop in Scottsbluff, which will take a couple days to get. Depending on what it looks like when the windscreen comes in, I can either drive the car to Scottsbluff or have the glass shop come out to my house to replace it.

Otherwise there doesn’t appear to be any damage to the car.

Why This Ex-Republican Will Vote for Almost Any Democrat

“I don’t care if Sen. Elizabeth Warren is a mendacious Massachusetts liberal. She could tell me that she’s going to make me wear waffles as underpants and I’ll vote for her. I don’t care if Sen. Kamala Harris is an opportunistic California prosecutor who wants to relitigate busing. She could tell me that I have to drive to work in a go-cart covered with Barbie decals and I’ll vote for her. I don’t care if Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is a muddle-headed socialist from a rural class-warfare state (where I once lived as one of his constituents). He could tell me he’s going to tax used kitty litter and I’ll vote for him.”

“I don’t care if Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is clearly influenced by a hostile foreign government or that Marianne Williamson is a weird, anti-science guru. They could…”

“Wait. I do care about that. It’s the reason they won’t get my vote next year, and why the president won’t either.”

“All of the policy ‘what about’ hypotheticals from my conservative friends are diversions. They’re trying to move the argument to policy to blind us to the reality that President Donald Trump is both unstable and compromised.”

someone posted a clarifying comment:

I’m not sure if he’s really saying Warren is “mendacious” etc. I think he’s saying that even if the worst things conservatives say about the Democratic candidates were true, they’re STILL a better choice than Trump. And that’s something conservatives really need to take to heart.

He was bringing up things that might be said about them to point out that even if they were true, he would still vote for them. I agree that it reinforces these false talking points for some readers, but his point is that no matter what they are miles better than 45.

and the best comment i found (outside of all the Eggo references)

Here’s a key difference for guys like Nichols and I hope other conservatives. For someone like W or Reagan, they could say that, yeah, he’s not all there or stupid, but at least he has good people to guide him.

The thing about Trump is a) he gets crappy people, and b) he doesn’t listen to them, or anyone. He just does what he wants, without any planning or logic. So it’s not like there’s a functioning government with an idiot on top. The idiot IS the government.

Thule Air Base, Greenland is the home of one of the 3 main stations of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (the others are at Clear, Alaska and Fylingdales Moor, England.) Together they are the most vital component of the NORAD warning system. Thule has long been targeted not just by Russian bombers and missiles but by various propaganda campaigns in favor of its closing. The locals have never been good candidates for a Kremlin snow-job, though, and the base has remained open for decades. Trump’s idiotic suggestions will no doubt help Putin and the propaganda machine revive these efforts.

What did trump do to the mooch that pissed mooch off this badly?

he says:

The red line was the racism—full-blown racism. He can say that he’s not a racist, and I agree with him, okay? And let me explain to you why he’s not a racist, ‘cause this is very important. He’s actually worse than a racist. He is so narcissistic, he doesn’t see people as people. He sees them as objects in his field of vision. And so therefore, that’s why he has no empathy. That’s why he’s got his thumb up in the air when he’s taking a picture with an orphan

Whatever.

More from the now updated story (same link):

Trump held a conference call with J.P. Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Bank of America’s Brian Moynihan and Citigroup’s Michael Corbat, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The Dow plunged 800 points, or 3%, in its worst day of the year on Wednesday amid a recession warning from the bond market.

The president asked the three men to give him a read on the health of the U.S. consumer, according to a person briefed on the discussion. The executives responded that the consumer is doing well, but that they could be doing even better if issues such as the China-U.S. trade war were resolved, the person said.

Bank stocks were among the most hammered that day after the yield curve inverted, an unusual event where yields on longer-term bonds fall below that of short term ones. That’s because falling rates pressure the industry’s profit margins, and also the signal typically means that a recession is coming, which would lead to increased loan defaults.

Another part makes me think we need all the help we can get to stop Trump and I do in principle believe in forgiveness. Truth is probably in between. However, it’s also telling to me that a lot of people are vocalizing against Trump and I appreciate it. It’s also angering because it is revealing to me that all the Republican rage towards Obama was dirty politics and insincere bs. Not real disagreement but political bs.

The first step in contrition is taking accountability for your actions.

You must admit why you need to apologise.

No one is required to accept an apology.

Joe Walsh has always been a wingnut. Suddenly today he says he’s not? I’m not a Christian at all and I know “faith without works is dead.” Come back to me when you have some works to show for it, Mr. Walsh.

And #PayUpDeadbeat — if you can’t even do that, why should I believe you when you worked for decades to help put the worst person I can imagine in the White House?

Even if you do offer a sincere apology and accept responsibility for your actions, I am not required to accept it. You rob my house, return all my stuff, say you’re sorry, I’m still going to press charges.

Not as though they haven’t been warned.

Chaim Rumkowski was the head of the Jewish Council of Elders in the Łódź Ghetto appointed by Nazi Germany during the German occupation of Poland.

Rumkowski accrued much power by transforming the ghetto into an industrial base manufacturing war supplies for the Wehrmacht in the mistaken belief that productivity was the key to Jewish survival beyond the Holocaust. The Germans liquidated the ghetto in 1944. All remaining prisoners were sent to death camps in the wake of military defeats on the Eastern Front.

As the head of the Judenrat, Rumkowski is remembered for his speech Give Me Your Children, delivered at a time when the Germans demanded his compliance with the deportation of 20,000 children to Chełmno extermination camp. In August 1944, Rumkowski and his family joined the last transport to Auschwitz, and he was murdered there on August 28, 1944 by Jewish Sonderkommando inmates who beat him to death as revenge for his role in the Holocaust.

Learning about Rumkowski, there’s an interesting quote in his Wikipedia page:

This man had sickly leanings that clashed. Toward his fellow Jews, he was an incomparable tyrant who behaved just like a Führer and cast deathly terror to anyone who dared to oppose his lowly ways. Toward the perpetrators, however, he was as tender as a lamb and there was no limit to his base submission to all their demands, even if their purpose was to wipe us out totally. Either way, he did not properly understand his situation and positing and their limits.

I had huge bells ringing as I read this. It sounds very similarly to Trump towards the USA and Putin. Trump has more restrictions at the moment, but the quote rings true…

The CEOs also told Trump that the trade dispute is damaging the outlook for capital spending by corporations, according to another person with knowledge of the discussions. The president was receptive to the notion that uncertainty over trade is hurting corporate confidence, this person said.

They also talked about the Federal Reserve and the global economic slowdown that has central banks around the world moving to ease monetary conditions, this person said. One opinion batted around during the call: A 25 basis point cut by the Fed won’t likely change capital flows in the markets.

The call, which lasted about 20 minutes, happened after the CEOs concluded a previously-scheduled meeting with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in Washington. Trump wanted to speak to the three executives, the men were informed, and he called in from his property in New Jersey. Bloomberg first reported on the conference call.

Trump has been reaching out to corporate leaders this week amid his concerns that a slowing U.S. economy could impact his reelection chances, according to a Thursday piece from the Washington Post.

The discussion was reminiscent of one held in December by Mnuchin during an earlier stock market rout with the heads of the six biggest U.S. lenders.

On August 7, at around 10 a.m., four black high school students were held at gun point, face down on the ground, by a middle-aged white woman. The four kids were high school football players, fundraising for their school’s football team, a week or so before school begins for the Wynne School system in Wynne, Arkansas. Memphis’ WMC5 News reports that at least two of the teens were wearing their football jerseys when 46-year old Jerri Kelly, decided the four looked suspicious enough to pull a gun on.

According to Wynne Police Chief Jackie Clark “suspicious persons,” were reported to emergency services and when police arrived, Mrs. Kelly was holding the four teens at gunpoint while they sat on the ground. Kelly was arrested on “four counts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a minor.”

A neighbor told news outlets that high school kids go door to door every year around this time of year, fundraising for the football team. It isn’t a new phenomenon. Surprisingly, Mrs. Kelly did not get her mugshot taken. When asked if Kelly, who is married to Cross County Jail Administrator Joe Kelly had received “special treatment,” in not getting her mugshot taken, Police Chief Clark dismissed the question saying that Kelly had had a “medical issue” during her booking.

On Thursday morning, before her court appearance, Kelly had her mugshot taken, “because of community backlash.” The authorities have been saying everything one needs to say if you want to exonerate someone who seems to be terribly guilty of “four counts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a minor.” This includes Wynne Police Chief Jackie Clark insisting on focusing on the students and not wanting to answer questions about Kelly.

The Wynne School System Superintendent said that they were considering ending door-to-door fundraising. Yeah, kids walking around and talking to neighbors is the problem. Not the people with the guns.

Yeah, but Trump isn’t the payer, the federal government is.

There’s still a difference?

Yes, the Federal Government is more likely to pay the bill…because there’s serious consequences if they don’t.

That is what makes America great. That was America before trump and his hateful rhetoric. That is the America we should aspire to returning to. That is the only history we should Go Back To.

Seriously. Awhile back I had a church group of mine buy a bunch of birthday cards to a 94 year old WWII vet. I LOVED doing that so much.

ima say this till im blue:

you lost control of your weapon. you wielded it unnecessarily.

you lose your freedom (criminal), finances (civil) and future 2A rights (gone)

if you think you were justified and /or didnt do anything wrong then:

- FACE a criminal jury and prove it
- FACE 4 civil juries and have them agree with you

Just paged this piece that came in this morning - Peter Thiel’s spytech company Palantir is helping ICE target migrants to be rounded up

One of the key data points that they track is if the targets have assets.

So if a Latino working in the chicken factory in Mississippi has scraped and scrounged enough to buy a pickup truck, or a house … well then, that all goes to ICE when they round that poor guy up, right?

Fuckers. Every goddam one of them.

That’s true. Ilhan Omar has not been shot as President Ronald Reagan or Rep. Steve Scalise were. (Rep. Leo Ryan is the only major politician in my living memory who was assassinated, but that was not for political reasons, it was for religious reasons. Come to think about it, Rep. Omar is being demonised for religious reasons amongst others.)

Maybe you’re too young to have independent memory of JFK’s assassination… but surely you’re old enough to remember RFK?

re: #274 Anymouse 🌹🎃

I’m certainly glad I don’t have this attitude or I would have turned into my brother.

In Mitchell’s spew of bullshit that Charles posted, this one stuck out as particularly egregious:

For decades now, Climate Scientists have been PREDICTING this, even at a time when the data weren’t necessarily clear. All that time, the deniers claimed “No warming! All the data that shows warming is flawed and/or faked!!!”

Now, as noted, the line has changed to “Climate changes all the time!” and “It’s a natural cycle!” and my favorite, from Trump, “Yeah the climate is changing but maybe it changes back!”

And Mitchell wades into this as if Climate Scientists are ONLY NOW saying that anthropogenic GHG’s are causing the warming the deniers can no longer pretend isn’t happening, saying it’s Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc fallacy, as if they hadn’t been predicting this for over 30 years.

It truly is amazing that the Right slips seamlessly from one position to its diametric opposite without even a pause to consider that they were wrong in the first place.

TBF, Ryan was assassinated for Cult Collapsing reasons, not so much religious. (And my Congressperson still carries lead from the attack. One tough lady, Rep. Speier.)

not as high profile,
scalise
and of course giffords

and i’d make an argument that reagan wasnt shot over reagan’s politics, only that he was a politician (and almost any ‘famous’ person would do)

hinkley was a nutburger trying to impress jody foster and thought killing a high visibility target (ie the pres) would gain him notoriety

hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc are all ‘natural’

why should we bother predicting them and try to protect ourselves?

ps - it doesnt matter if they’re right or wrong. there is no self awareness or hypocrisy. there is no shame

there is only ‘what position can i take right now that will work for me right now’.

His plan involves building his own island off the coast, so he can survive while all others are slaughtered. He’s also a big fan of uploading his consciousness into some kind of cyber-brain, so he can Live Forever.

Peter Thiel’s retirement plan.

I’ve watched the argument on temperature go from “It’s cooling” to “It’s not warming at all” to “Your data are falsified” to “Your weather stations are producing bias” to “It was warming but it stopped” to “It’s warming but climate changes all the time”.

On CO2, I watched it change from “It’s not rising” to “You can’t prove the CO2 is anthropogenic” to “CO2 is GOOD for you!” to silence.

And all from the same individuals. And some of them were, at least in theory, scientifically trained.
