The GOP’s Gun Violence Talking Points Revealed: Blame the Left, Don’t Talk About White Supremacism

Politics • Views: 23,452

You could pretty much tell already that this was the official Republican party line, but now the Tampa Bay Times has confirmed it with a document sent out by the House Republicans, instructing their surrogates to blame everything on the left. And whatever you do, don’t talk about white supremacism.

Congressional Republicans recently circulated talking points on gun violence that falsely described the El Paso massacre and other mass shootings as “violence from the left.”

A document obtained by the Tampa Bay Times and sent by House Republicans provides a framework for how to respond to anticipated questions like, “Why won’t you pass legislation to close the ‘gun show loophole’ in federal law?” and “Why shouldn’t we ban high-capacity magazines?” The answers are boilerplate Republican arguments against tougher gun restrictions.

But it also included this question: “Do you believe white nationalism is driving more mass shootings recently?” The suggested response is to steer the conversation away from white nationalism to an argument that implies both sides are to blame.

I sometimes wonder if Republicans understand how revealing it is when they dodge the issue of racism and white supremacism. They don’t want to talk about it? They can’t talk about it, because it’s about them and on some level they know it very well.

Well, I can only hope that the protesters in Hong Kong aren’t like the fellow in the photo that accompanies this article:

telegraph.co.uk

because if they’re waiting for Donald Trump to free them from Beijing’s grasp, they might as well be asking for Scooby Doo to save them.

Hey….I’ve got an idea! Hong Kong should change its name to “Greenland” - then he’ll want to buy it lock, stock and barrel.

You know someone is going to end up fucking up this talking point (beyond the inherent fucked upness that it contains in its natural form) and basically end with some sort of “if they would all just know their place”

from downstairs BFBW

I’ve watched the argument on temperature go from “It’s cooling” to “It’s not warming at all” to “Your data are falsified” to “Your weather stations are producing bias” to “It was warming but it stopped” to “It’s warming but climate changes all the time”.

On CO2, I watched it change from “It’s not rising” to “You can’t prove the CO2 is anthropogenic” to “CO2 is GOOD for you!” to silence.

And all from the same individuals. And some of them were, at least in theory, scientifically trained.

climate change / global warming, regardless of the cause, is relevant and requires mediation.

We as a species have something (presumably) not found before or anywhere else: the ability of self awareness
- which gives rise to actual awareness of the self
- we can affect the planet
- if the planet reacts, we care individually and don’t desire to have our individuality extinguished
- those who would volunteer for military service might feel a different form of personal sacrifice for the greater good (country) but not at the cost of extinguishing the species

— the planet is warming. that’s empirical. if you claim it isn’t - don’t merely pooh pooh the existing data, show the data, the source of the data and the unequivocal math. or else shut up.

in a sense it doesn’t matter **why** the planet is warming - the “effects” will be the same no matter why.

humans as a whole do some things that can change / alter / effect global temperatures - (and other weather/climate):
- we can increase/decrease greenhouse gasses
- we can increase / decrease the amount of particulates and smog

these tools we do have ***control over *** and because they can affect global temps maybe can be used to slow it down

otherwise were just doing nothing at all. sitting in the sand crying waiting to be washed over by the incoming tide.

asinine article in the national review

As the Obama administration’s Department of Justice admitted in a 2013 memo, “universal background check” laws are unenforceable without gun registration. Retail gun sales are already registered via record-keeping by the retailer. When a dealer retires, all of his registration records must be delivered to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, where they are digitized. (ATF is currently not supposed to make its database searchable by the purchaser’s name.) The purpose of the background-check laws being pushed in Congress and the states is to expand registration by requiring the use of gun stores as intermediaries for transfers between private individuals — even loaning your shotgun to your cousin for a week.

Centralizing registration will be a future demand of the gun-prohibition lobby after Trump surrenders to the current demands. That is what has been enacted in California, where the government now has a comprehensive list of almost all gun owners and their particular firearms — thanks to records created for “universal background checks.”

Once there is registration, the next step is confiscation

see? 1, 2, 3. no other possible argument is possible. they think this is inevitable. ‘they are coming for our guns”

this is why i say concede everything:
- the current, bizarre interpretation of the 2A
- bans
- databases
- mandatory training and retraining
- insurance
TAKE AWAY ALL THEIR ARGUMENTS

which can only leave:
- “control your weapons at all times” as the only thing that matters
- lose your freedom (criminal), finances (civil) and future (2A rights gone) when you don’t

rights come with responsibilities

i’d be fine with registration too
but i dont matter
and it will never, ever happen

the last legal owner is the only person who matters
(unless it was legit stolen and reported)
start every investigation with the manufacturer
prove who you transferred it to (likely a dealer) and that you took reasonable care when you did
then move on to that person and down the line

if you sell a gun and dont keep a record of to who and under what circumstances, then you’re left holding the bag, so take precautions to protect yourself with a few bits of paper.

no it wont always work. what it will do is make people think about being responsible.

Not just registration but a sample bullet fired from the gun as part of the registration to match against future crimes.

re: #6 Anymouse 🌹🎃

It is satisfying to see Trump’s polling in the Morning Consult poll dropping across the nation.

Wyoming was the state which was most “Trumpy” at the start of his term, at +40. Now it’s +21. That isn’t exactly a promising state for the Democrats, but that is quite an erosion for a virtual one-party state.

The most “Trumpy” state currently is Alabama, at +26 (down from +36).

Pinks and reds are where he is in the minus column against Gen Eric Democrat. Blues are where he’s above water. Texas went from +21 to +6 (not quite a swing state, but certainly a concern for the GOP).

Every place which has become a virtual toss-up (like my state) is a place the GOP will either have to spend money to hold, or sacrifice to hold Texas.

If it was just two states (Nebraska with five electoral votes versus Texas with thirty-six) the math would be simple: Sacrifice Nebraska to hold Texas. But the huge pile of states which are looking bad (Iowa six electoral votes from +9 to -11) means hanging on to Texas is going to be damn costly for the GOP.

Of course, polling this far out is mostly inside baseball for political junkies. The overall trend is clear though, the combination of the normal loss of confidence in an incumbent coupled with the stunning incompetence of the same incumbent.

His incredible coat tails also have to have the GOP at least a little worried about the Senate. (Nearly everyone he endorses gorks on election day.)

The slide bar shows how he has sunk in polling gradually since he was inaugurated.

Not really. Trump got caught shaming one of his own supporters.

That could turn into bad news in the media.

Therefore Trump has to make up a lie, any lie, to “prove” what was seen on video and uncovered later did not happen. The press has to report it because “both sides.” It becomes another brick in the wall of conservative religion, which cannot be refuted or shown false because they have their faith and their priests (conservative pundits, politicians, and influencers) have told them what to believe.

My favorite moment of the Obama presidency was that time at his rally he called someone he thought was a protester, a ‘fatty’, and demanded he be ejected from the building, and everybody laughed and we all applauded and…..oh wait that never happened.

“Exactly,” Homan replied, adding, “ICE employees are on edge, they’re under attack.”

This line of thinking is no different than when Republicans tried to pass a law in North Dakota to run over protestors. Though North Dakota shot that down, that has become a standard talking point in conservative religion. You have a right to run over protestors because you’re inconvenienced. Who cares about things like a right to life?

Trump cares enough about how the media treats him that he complains when they don’t cover his rallies. He knows this will get coverage, even if it’s magic balance fairy coverage. He doesn’t want coverage of him mistreating his supporters, because some of them might think “well, if he did it to that guy, maybe he’ll do it to me.”

The point of religion is to short-circuit critical thinking (which is why the Texas GOP put opposition to critical thinking in their party platform). A cult is just a religion which does not yet have a respectable number of members.

My unwillingness to accept an apology from a repeated liar who has not done one thing to accept responsibility for his lies is somehow a bad attitude?

Back in December 2016, Joe started expressing his outrage over Trump’s response on Russian meddling. Whatever else he may now say, Joe was one of the first Republican who voiced public concern about Russia. Trump’s other policies may be in line with standard Republican fare — but his foreign policy radically diverges from the past. And Joe was vocal about that from before Trump took office (Of course, he should have objected before the election too)

Yup. And he didn’t.

So which is more plausible, knowing about Bog Standard Conservative;

1) He sees the error of his ways over helping build this (but won’t admit he helped build it) or,

2) He is upset that Trump is saying the quiet parts of a half-century of GOP dog whistles out loud?

Aside from the deliberate action, I’ll bet there’s a law giving people in a crosswalk the right-of-way. I’ll bet it also doesn’t say how long you’re in the crosswalk before your right-of-way expires.

Canadian here.

Regarding the two bolded points: Quebec does not surprise me because the Francophone population there has long felt they aren’t taken seriously enough by the rest of the country. There was (and still is, albeit much smaller) a Quebec secessionist movement. This movement peaked with a province wide referendum in 1995 in which Quebecers voted narrowly to remain part of Canada. Many of the prominent separatists were and still are butthurt over losing that one.

Alberta is basically the Canadian version of Texas/The Deep south. Conservative, bible belt type area.

Ontario on the other hand generally tracks more Liberal but is currently run by dipshit mini-Trump Doug Ford. So who knows how that will end up.

WTFITS

I don’t know what to think of the Times of Israel article on that. It is possible Reps. Omar and Tlaib knew nothing about it. (The article says the information was taken down from their Website in 2016, before they were elected.)

Others have published information they didn’t know came from racist or bigoted sources because it was hidden or laundered through other places, like Tucker Carlson’s White Power Hour.

I hope those two have people to get to the bottom of this right away.

Interestingly, the preference in spelling with only one “s” has only come about in my lifetime.

Buss is also an audio signal path. I’m not sure how you could use the plural of audio paths as a transport method either.

We actually did buy the Danish West Indies (Virgin Islands) back in 1917. Danish voters approved the sale by 283,670 to 158,157. Local residents (who did not have the legal right to vote) approved the sale by a vote of 4,027 to seven in an unofficial referendum, which I think shows just how high the standing of the United States was at one time.
Geographically, it was barely there compared to Greenland but the population was of the same order. Slavery was abolished there in 1848, but strict labor laws created a Jim Crow style environment that persisted for decades.

Four black teens were fundraising for their high school football team. A white woman held them at gunpoint.

Four black teenagers were going door to door early this month, looking to raise money for their high school football team in Wynne, Arkansas. When they approached the home of Jerri Kelly, she held them on the ground at gunpoint until police arrived.

Kelly, who is married to a county jail administrator, was arrested and charged with four accounts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a minor, Wynne County police told CBS News Friday.

Police arrived at Kelly’s house on Wednesday, August 7 at around 10 a.m., responding to a report of “suspicious persons,” to find the four boys on the ground, with Kelly, who is white, standing over them with a gun.

Kelli has since apologized and offered to buy the boys lunch.

References:
1 Timothy 2

8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. 9 I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10 but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

11 A woman[a] should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[b] she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women[c] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

1 Peter 3:

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

Titus 2:

3 Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. 4 Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

This is a hard time of life, old enough to live well, but also old enough our mentors, those that influenced us or impressed us that were not terribly older than us are passing.

It really felt like a personal window to the pre Depression era closed when my Dad’s mom died. She was born in 1912 and my grandparents were middle school sweethearts. I know that’s different than what you’re talking about but it’s definitely tough seeing people who so defined your experience pass on. I’m only 32 so I’m sure I’ll be here as the boomers pass on.

It’s Pat!

I dressed as Pat for Halloween and won a prize. It was apt that I picked that costume.

Same here when my last great-grandmother died in 1993. She was born in 1896.

I have a bit of WW2 connexion with my mother, but she was a small child when that war was on.

My wife’s mother was born in 1931, so she was a window for her about the latter part of the Depression and WW2, along with the massive polio outbreak. She died in 1997 of complications from post-polio syndrome.

*sigh* expect to see more of this in the 100-mile zone. That’s anywhere within 100 miles of a land or sea border. Most Americans live within 100 miles of a land or sea border. Interestingly, Phoenix is just outside the 100 mile zone, and if some asshat asks me for my papers, I’m gonna give them an earful. And it might even be in English.

Both of my parents lived through WW2. Mom had her stories on the home front: rationing coupon books and so on. Dad was in SHAEF HQ. And did he have some stories to tell.

My grandmother is still with us thankfully. I’m so glad my niece gets to know her. Grandma’s parents were immigrants. My niece is first generation maternally and being the family historian I love telling her our story so she’s aware of the humbler experiences of our side too.

It’s not new, and it’s not going away. There’s a Paul Simon song with Immigration on a Greyhound, and the interrogatee says, sings,

Yes, I am an alien

Something that astounds me is my Nana- my dad’s mother- her father was born before so many things I can’t imagine life without. The telephone comes to mind immediately. I only have one clear photo of him. A short man dressed nicely but humbly. His life reminds me how close the city and nature used to be since he was an avid horseman who worked as an elevator operator in downtown Pittsburgh.

Off topic, but I must recommend yet another podcast.

“Stuff You Missed in History Class” did a two part overview of Thalidomide.

Horrible and fascinating. I did not know that survivors were STILL fighting for funds. What a shit show.

Highly recommended.

I definitely eventually pass on my research to a family member. I hope I can be a weird bridge between the 19th and 22nd century since I know people who knew people in the 19th and I will hopefully know people who will be in the 22nd. That’s astounding to me to think about. How we individually relate to the past through our reading & understanding of history or how our family experienced it. My Dad’s family has ancestors who were in the US during the Civil War but we don’t know too much outside my Dads paternal grandmother’s father a Civil War vet how the family experienced it. Know nothing at all about what his mother’s grandfathers did during that time. That’s what interests me about the intersection of genealogy and family history. History to me anyhow at it’s bare bones is about how human beings respond to the larger events around us.

My father’s mother died in 1984 about two months before her mother. (I went from Virginia Beach to Massachusetts for both funerals.) My great-grandmother was born in 1890 and my grandmother in 1913. (They were part of the family which came from Poland.)

My mother’s mother was born in 1913 and died in 2005. I did not attend her funeral for a multitude of reasons besides being homeless at the time.

Four black teens were fundraising for their high school football team. A white woman held them at gunpoint.
