My dad signed up for the Army before he got drafted, and he was sent to Korea as a cook. He didn’t want to be a cook, he wanted to be in communications with his younger brother. He got all the paperwork prepared and ready for their colonel to sign when he came for dinner one night. And for the dinner, dad took one of these sides of beef that had been shoved in a can, did it up right and served some of it to the colonel. Well that surely backfired. Not only did the colonel refuse to sign for the transfer (who wants to lose a good cook in the middle of a war?), he made my dad go over to *his* cook to show him how to make that tasty, tender beef out of those canned sides. So my dad cooked his entire time in the Army and he was a better cook than our mother.

But, as grating as Biden’s routine is, I actually do think it’s smart campaigning. It feeds into a hunger a lot of Democrats have for a less winner-take-all kind of politics. It also chips away at efforts to paint Biden as a radical socialist who is out of the mainstream, so it’s a solid general election strategy too. I really do not believe that serving up partisan red meat is going to be a winning strategy next year, and when Biden does it, he’s going to make it about Trump rather than his party or his supporters. I think it’s pretty clear that this enables him to give permission to as many people as possible to vote for him, and that that is the smartest way to beat this president.

My dad was a ship’s cook in the Navy during WW2. He served in the Pacific, but he didn’t talk much about it other than his story about the ship getting caught in a typhoon and flipping fully sideways at one point. He usually fixed Sunday lunch, and us kids loved stuff like creamed chipped beef on toast (he probably knew it as shit-on-a-shingle).

He used to think of himself as the better cook, and it used to cause some friction. I remember one tense Thanksgiving where my mom had gotten so hurt/ pissed at him for berating her cooking that she wouldn’t come sit down for the meal. It took a while for her to recover enough to join the family. I doubt that dad actually apologized to her for being a jerk. The things we remember…

I think we’ve got an amazing selection of viable Democratic candidates and I’d vote for any of them in a moment. They don’t seem to be attacking each other in a damaging way (except for Bernie’s people), so I’m hoping that when we finally have a candidate, the rest of the field will be willing and motivated to campaign as one party. The media is going to be awful no matter what happens, but hopefully the candidates won’t take the bait. They all know what’s at stake.

After reading about the failed attempt to “Buy Greenland” I fell down the Youtube rabbit hole of the folk song “Greenland Whale Fisheries.” It seems that every folk group has a cover of this song!

There are two versions of this song, an Irish version and an American version. The most popular Irish version is by the Dubliners. It’s also been covered by the Pogues & the Corries & Ger Loughlin.

The Dubliners ~ Greenland Whale Fishery

The American version has been covered by the Weavers, Peter, Paul & Mary, Theo Bikel & Judy Collins, Joan Baez, & others. PP&M have the best cover.

Peter, Paul and Mary - Greenland Whale Fisheries (25th Anniversary Concert)

There’s a third version of this song was done by the Chad Mitchell Trio by combining the fast tempo of the Irish song & the lyrics of the American version.

The Ballad of the Greenland Whalers - Chad Mitchell Trio

We need an updated version of this song, sung from the whale’s point of view I think.

it’s funny, but on this progressive blog i’ve been hanging out on since 2006, any mention of biden draws nothing but biting sarcasm and hostility. yet, here i am in what is famously nicknamed “the socialist republic of berkeley”, and the people i talk to here feel that a biden/harris ticket is inevitable and a very good way to bring back the rust belt

Agree that whoever is campaigning now has to also be campaigning for the general election.

But even with that, Biden isn’t good enough.

Trumpers are anti-Obama with virulence, and Biden = Obama, and if anyone doesn’t believe that now then Trump will be sure to drum that into the heads of the nitwits.

Yet it remains that the future depends upon the generation younger than I, and whoever the Democratic candidate may be must be able to ignite some excitement in the under-30 crowd.

i certainly don’t disagree with that, and that fact is what pisses off progressives about biden’s conciliatory rhetoric

however, there is a great hunger among large segments of (usually) gop voters to stop the trump shitstorm and go back to the quieter past, when a suburban middle manager could say he was a republican and not get called a supporter of white supremacism and sweaty screaming morons

biden is playing on that

biden is campaigning in the theme “we can go back to the way things were before trump”

this isn’t really true, of course. and is anathema (i’d use a stronger word if i could think of one) to committed progressives, but imho it shows strategic political thinking and an understanding that most people are not like progressive political nerds immersed in the details of positions, but rather sportsball adherents who vote by feel

It shows a political thinking, a safe one that basically implies no change. It doesn’t show very strategic thinking. The goal is to get people to vote, and, as much as I hate Democrats for this, some of them have to be inspired beyond “They’ll throw you in a camp after they have forced you to give birth to the child whose father is a rapist.”

Old people. And if they voted for Trump in 2016 then the ones still alive in 2020 will vote for Trump.

Yes, Bernie is a fashion with the college crowd, but he’s not as hot this time around, as fashion changes and can change in a single season.

and my opinion is that old people and swing voters will vote for biden much more easily than they’ll vote for bernie or liz

and i think biden’s ‘don’t scare the horses’ strategy is a good one

that’s all i’m saying

I will also say this about the Republicans Joe Biden thinks he’s talking about. I work and live with a whole lot of them. They will take care of their neighbors and, knowing I’m a Democrat, will still do things for me because we’re neighbors and coworkers. But then they don’t believe in climate change. And they don’t think that blacks really need any more advantages. And they think that since they had to put up with Obama (which consisted of them getting coverage for preexisting conditions) that we just have to put up with Trump. As far as the camps are concerned, it doesn’t affect them, so what do they care. and they think they will still have a job after Trump because so many of them work for a defense contractor. And they still won’t vote for a Democrat or for any Democratic policy.

Given that there are multitudes of people who did not vote in 2016, yet were eligible, it would seem like there are far more fertile fields than Republicans or even Republican-leaning voters.

Those who were purged from voting rolls? Who were disenfranchised? If somehow we could get more polling booths and polling places, typically in red states, so that people weren’t forced to wait in long lines? People who might have been able to vote if voting hours and early voting days were extended?

Indeed:

This hampers efforts to counter Donald Trump’s destructive impact on a daily basis, and spreads confusion about both Democratic prospects and strategy in the 2020 election prospects. Above all, the mistaken belief that Democrats won in 2018 by gaining Republican support (aka winning back “Trump voters”) fuels an illusory search for an ill-defined middle ground that could actually demobilize the Democratic leaners and voters who actually drove last year’s blue wave.

Except Biden’s approach isn’t new, it’s Kerry 2.0. It’s the same “Reagan Democrat”-seeking campaign that the Dems always falls back on when they’re running against an incumbent Republican. The only person who had any success with that was Bill Clinton and that’s because he was charismatic enough to charm a nun out of a convent. Every other time they’ve tried to run that play, it’s been a disaster because the middle-of-the-road “back to normal” strategy leaves both flanks open to attack.

Yes and no. I don’t believe in swing voters either, but judging by the midterms, there were people who were motivated by 2016 and what followed. We need to go after them. (I’ve told the story of the woman who was thinking of not voting because of the bad things the “politicians” were doing. It didn’t take a lot to convince her that the two sides are not like each other and she needed to help the good guys. And we did defeat the Repug incumbent.)

As to Biden’s appeal to sanity, I’m old enough to remember when the Republican party wasn’t the racist and extremist party that it is now. It really was the party of Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and other progressives and, yes, liberals. Its members advanced the Civil Rights act, probably more than the Democrats, and they didn’t march in lockstep. Biden is appealing to nostalgia for the time when our political opponents weren’t totally bugfuck.

As a matter of fact, I would also like to see times like that again, I just don’t see them reappearing any time soon.

78
teleskiguy  Aug 18, 2019 • 9:47:54pm

When I look at the Biden campaign, the phrase “generals are always prepared to fight the last war” springs to mind. Instead of a campaign focused on keeping and building on the huge successes of the last two elections, it’s one that’s trying to play at the margins of 2016 in the hopes of winning just enough EC votes to beat Trump. And hey, there’s nothing that says such a strategy is a losing one, it’s just a much narrower path that requires a lot to go right and very little to go wrong.

Overall, I think Biden’s going to do well in whiter and more conservative states/districts, while struggling practically everywhere else. And the reason is because for a lot of minority voters, “back to normal” doesn’t mean much when you’ve seen the mask fall off of the people you thought of as “friends.”

This whole thing sounds like a great idea.

Intercontinental Exchange Inc., the parent of the New York Stock Exchange, won an approval that clears the way for its Bakkt unit to allow investors to buy derivatives that pay out with Bitcoins for the first time.

The New York State Department of Financial Services on Friday granted a charter to Bakkt Trust Co. to hold custody of customers’ tokens. The futures had already gotten a green light from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission under a self-certification process. The first contracts will be offered Sept. 23.

ICE has said its ultimate goal is to create an ecosystem that would encourage pension funds, endowments and other institutions to invest more money in cryptocurrencies, and make it much easier for consumers to buy products with the cryptocurrency. The venture, announced to much fanfare in August 2018, has lined up big-name backers, including Starbucks Inc. and Microsoft Inc.

Bakkt had faced months of delays amid skepticism from the CFTC officials around how clients’ tokens would be stored, and thus safeguarded from possible theft and manipulation, according to people familiar with the matter. The concerns prompted ICE to seek the license from New York.

I am not sure if I have seen a worse idea coming out of Wall Street…maybe collateralized sub-prime mortgages being sold as AAA.

I love how that this is where we are as a country now: where saying ‘Slavery is still a sin that affects us to this day’ is somehow divisive and Anti-American, and thus ‘the real racism’, and where avowed self-proclaimed anti-fascists are the real terrorists and we must be protected from them by avowed, open fascists because they, they somehow are the Real America we must protect.

We are fully in the upside-down, and the only thing missing is just hanging a fucking ‘Whites Only” sign around the Statue of Liberty. Oh. Wait. Ken Cuccinelli already rhetorically did that.

Holy fuck how have we backslid this far in just two and a half years?

The paraphrase the Doctor: We aren’t fighting an invasion, we are leading a revolution. The bad guys are here, and they are in charge. We, as a country, thought we had gotten rid of them. But Obama’s election scared far too many white people into believing they had to do whatever they could to maintain white privilege.

He’s a “conservative Democrat” like I’m a “liberal Republican” — meaning we registered with a party back when we were teenagers, the party has changed a whole lot since then but we never bothered changing our registration. For decades, we’ve voted in the general for the other party’s nominee.

So Chuck Grassley is apparently pissed that Trump has granted 31 biofuel waivers

“They screwed us … when they issued 31 waivers,” Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) told Iowa Public Television Friday (in the video above). He said fewer than 10 waivers were granted during “all the Obama years — and we thought that was bad.”

Grassley added: “What’s really bad isn’t a waiver, it’s that it’s being granted to people that really aren’t [in financial] hardship,” while farmers are suffering a record number of bankruptcies. He said the “buck stops at the Oval Office.”

If only we had 4 decades worth of knowledge about Donald Trump being an untrustworthy lying asshole willing to screw over anyone if he thought it could make him a quick buck in the moment (future consequences be damned)… oh, wait, we did have that, didn’t we?

What ever you do, don’t make the same mistakes as me. Do not suggest Hillary Clinton ran anything less than a perfect campaign in 2016, and do not suggest that dehumanizing North Koreans is a bad thing.

Like me, you will be vilified.

Every candidate runs a highly flawed campaign. It’s after the fact that the media develops a narrative as to why the candidate won or lost. The 1955 incarnation of the great Doc Brown explained (my paraphrase) that “Of course Reagan won — presidents have to look good on TV”. Of course, given that the counter-intelligence investigation into the 2016 election was probably short-circuited by the Trump administration, we will never know if Trump’s victory was aided by Russian success in changing actual votes or how many voters were disenfranchised by Russian changes to the voter databases.

There are single-issue voters (gum-humpers, anti-choice fanatics) who make their decision on policy; there are others who vote party allegiance without thinking. But as for the rest — it’s personality that controls the decision-making process. In the Nixon-Kennedy nail-biter, Kennedy ultimately carried the day because he was a star on the new media. Hillary was totally un-charismatic; she made her appeals strictly to the thought processes of the American public — a losing strategy. Yes, she did win the popular vote — but that is irrelevant. What we need is someone with the intellect of Hillary but the charm of Bill.

Campaigns are somewhat like sports in that most analysis around them plays the result. In football, you go for it on fourth and goal and score a touchdown, you’re a genius and a gambler and a hero; you run the same play in the same scenario and don’t score, you’re an idiot and a fool and should have taken the easy points of the field goal.

Same thing in politics. Hillary Clinton ran a “terrible” campaign because she lost three states by a total of 75,000 votes or so. Had the GOTV efforts brought out 35,000 extra people in each of those states, she’d be the first female POTUS.

I’d also point out that there are plenty of single issue voters and party allegiance voters across the political spectrum. I’m guessing I’m probably one of the very few people among this commentariat who has voted for presidential nominees from three (let alone two) different parties.

These paragraphs from a Bloomberg opinion piece on a coming Trump caused recession are astounding:

Slowing growth in Europe and China has various causes, but high on the list is trade — because Trump has made disrupting commerce his main instrument of economic policy. Right now, damage to the flow of goods and services is the least of it. Far more dangerous is the blow to confidence and investment. Firms and investors are starting to ask where the president’s willingness to wreck the global economic architecture might actually lead.

Until now, the tendency has been to see the administration’s protectionist initiatives as a combination of tactical (hence temporary) disruptions and threats that will come to nothing. This is presumably why stock markets have mostly been betting on further expansion. But Trump, erratic in so many other respects, has been consistent on one thing: his disdain for international cooperation in general, and for the liberal order of global trade in particular. An idea seems to be dawning at last: Perhaps he really is willing to see both destroyed.

There was a time I would never have believed you if you told me publications would write about an American President this way.

Fucking hell.

I think the Golden Calf Congregation, aka “Republican Party,” has started to insist on “civility” because they know it is difficult to address their crimes and general depravity in a civil manner. Were the prosecutors at Nuremberg civil to the devils they had in the dock? Was Vince Bugliosi civil to Charles Manson? Otoh, Grant was civil to Robert E.
