So Trump makes a real estate offer to a sovereign nation as if it were a real estate agency.

Trump is brushed off with all the decorum that is due for a proposition that totally ignores and defies all diplomatic protocols and channels.

Trump is offended for being treated for who he is and not who he aspires to be and is offended “Nobody talks to America like that!”

That 36% is the equivalent to the crazification level of fact-impervious GOP base bigots (aka the deplorables) who’d support Trump no matter what.

Trump has never gotten above 50% in this particular polling.

The lower the rating goes, the more desperate Trump will get, and the more outlandish the lie and more extreme positions Trump will take.

He craves adulation and adoration, and he gets neither because we see through his baffling BS and cons and lies. We call him out for this, but he listens to Fox knowing that they’ll tell him what he wants to hear and that Fox misinforms their viewers to keep the con alive.

This wont end well for him - and we need to make sure that the GOP is driven from power at all levels of government.

re: #267 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I also wonder what Germany would look like if the attempt to assassinate him in July of 1944 had succeeded. The people who planned to seize power were not democrats in any sort, they would have wanted to institute an authoritarian state more like Franco’s Spain than the current Federal Republic of Germany.

Ian Kershaw, in his book “The End”, describes this in detail. The book is about the last year of Nazi Germany, why the political decision to fight to the bitter end was made, what it entailed, and what the consequences were.

The Nazi political decision to fight to the bitter end was made on the basis of the “Stab in the Back” theory about the 1918 surrender. That surrender was the recognition by the then national leadership that the military had collapsed and that further armed resistance was going to be futile and counter-productive.

The Nazis and their supporters argued that World War 1 still could have been won if only Germany had continued to fight. And that by surrendering, the leadership had betrayed Germany in 1918.

In 1944, Germany as a country, and everything about it still existed. The cities, and infrastructure, though damaged, still were organized and largely functional. The military still was an organized and disciplined body.

By the end of the war a year later in 1945, the entire country, and every organized thing about it was in ruins and no longer functioning. The majority of both civilian and military casualties occurred in that last year. In the last 4 months of the war, the German Army was losing the equivalent of a division a day.

In terms of individual Germans… Kershaw writes about how local Nazi hit squads would murder civilians they thought were dissidents, just before fleeing in front of the advancing allies.

It is an interesting look into the minds of bitter enders.

Captain Who Rescued Migrants At Sea Refuses Paris Medal, Calling It Hypocritical

The captain of a controversial ship that saved migrants in the Mediterranean Sea has refused to accept a medal for her work.

Pia Klemp, who is German, gained attention for rescuing thousands of stranded migrants with her crew as part of the nongovernmental organization Sea Watch International. For her efforts, she reportedly faces up to 20 years in prison in Italy, where the hard-line anti-immigrant government accused her of assisting illegal immigration.

(Using Gallup numbers)

In August 1979, Carter was polling in the mid-30s. August 1983, Reagan was in the low 40s. GHW Bush was over 70% in August ‘91. Clinton was in the mid-40s in August 1995. GW Bush was around 60% in August 2003. Obama was around 40% in August 2011.

The difference was that each of those presidents had time in positive territory. There were pretty obvious trend lines for most of those presidents as well. Carter was cratering; Reagan and Clinton were rebounding. GW Bush was continuing to slide from his 9/11 numbers. Trump has yet to break 45% in the Gallup poll. And his approval rating has been more or less a straight line, varying just between 35% and 44%.

We’ve somehow (knock on wood) nearly made it through an entire presidential term without a major international incident that typically defines presidencies. Which probably explains why Trump hasn’t had many highs or lows (relatively speaking). But I can’t imagine any objective observer of American politics believing that Trump is in a good place right now.

Beshear and Stumbo are both Dems.

Then it’s of limited use if looks at only registered voters; the problem has always been that Democrats are less likely to vote for a whole range of issues including that polling hours/polling places are less convenient for them — especially if early voting is unavailable

re: #88 KGxvi

Honest question… wouldn’t the prudent move regarding the Irish border simply be to have a united Ireland? Or would that be too messy given the history?

Northern Ireland may not be eager to unite with Ireland —- and England certainly isn’t going to willingly surrender NI.

Then it’s of limited use if looks at only registered voters; the problem has always been that Democrats are less likely to vote for a whole range of issues including that polling hours/polling places are less convenient for them — especially if early voting is unavailable

Likely voter models can be worthless though if they’re based predominantly on past elections. A registered voter model, while not ideal, serves as sort of a best case scenario in a high turnout election. It’s all about how the model is derived… as the old saying goes, there’s lies, damn lies, and statistics.

NI would have vote leave the UK and join the EU as independent country. Then they could again have an open border with the RoI.

Fair point… and wikipedia tells me Northern Ireland isn’t exactly keen on the idea anyway.

It would be rather amazing if Brexit led to the end of the UK as we’ve known it for basically the last hundred years.

Yeah: looking at that picture, I don’t think Capt. Pia needs much in the way of tattoos to convey the meaning of “Bad Ass”…

Have to imagine that English citizens would not be thrilled to discover a hard border with either RoI or NI, as would result under a hard Brexit.

The Scots will absolutely leave if there is a hard Brexit. And watch the Welsh veeeery carefully.

No doubt many Scots will want to do something. Whether they ever go through with the idea is another thing.

How do you roast green beans? I keep trying to find something to make me like them. Thus far, complete fail. (Blech)

i usually double this:
1 lb green beans
3 tbsp or less butter
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp garlic powder
½ tsp kosher salt
½ tsp pepper
2 tbsp lime juice

oven to 375-380
spray a large glass baking dish or rimmed pan
Melt butter and combine with olive oil and dry ingredients
Put green beans in a large bowl, pour in mixture and toss until evenly coated
Pour into baking dish and spread out
dont wash the bowl yet
Cook for appx 35 minutes or until beans begin to lightly brown
you can broil a minute or two at the end
Pour back into bowl
Add lime juice, toss to coat.
you can also add grated lime peel, chopped almonds (¼ c for a lb of beans), more salt and pepper

Dunno: maybe a cynical take on it, but it doesn’t seem likely (from recent opinion polling) that the “English” particularly care about what goes on in Ulster, and would probably shrug off its “loss”. Mainly, ISTM, on the grounds of “somebody else’s problem, now….”
