Caution, Virtuoso at Work: Cellist Kian Soltani, NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

This week felt like that scene in “2000 Maniacs” where they roll people down a big hill in barrels lined with spikes, except it went on for years. But here, now, in this moment, we have some truly beautiful playing by cello maestro Kian Soltani, accompanied by Christopher Schmitt on piano.

Watch Kian Soltani play “Popper: Hungarian Rhapsody”, “Schubert (arr. Soltani): ‘Nacht und Träume’” and “Soltani: Persian Fire Dance” at the Tiny Desk.

Aug. 16, 2019 | Tom Huizenga — It’s not every day someone walks into our NPR Music offices and unpacks an instrument made in 1680. And yet Kian Soltani, the 27-year-old cellist who plays with the authority and poetry of someone twice his age, isn’t exactly fazed by his rare Giovanni Grancino cello, which produces large, luminous tones. (He also plays a Stradivarius.)

And if you think the notion of a cello recital isn’t exactly sexy or thrilling, just take a look at Soltani; he radiates joy and ingenuity as he performs three pieces that offer virtuosity, sweet lyricism and fire.

The Hungarian Rhapsody, by the late 19th century cellist and composer David Popper, traces its inspiration to similarly titled pieces by Franz Liszt and Johannes Brahms, but showcases a number of hot-dogging tricks for the cello, including stratospheric high notes, flamboyant slides and a specific high-velocity bouncing of the bow called sautillé. Soltani nails all of them with nonchalant elegance, backed with companionable accompaniment by pianist Christopher Schmitt.

To prove he can make his instrument truly sing, Soltani worked up his own arrangement of “Nacht und Träume” (Night and Dreams) by Franz Schubert, replacing the human voice with his cello’s warm, intimate vocalizing. And in the Persian Fire Dance, Soltani’s own composition, flavors from his Iranian roots – drones and spiky dance rhythms – commingle with percussive ornaments.

It all adds up to well-rounded, technically astute playing from a young cellist whose career is ascending in full flight.

SET LIST
Popper: Hungarian Rhapsody
Schubert (arr. Soltani): “Nacht und Träume”
Soltani: Persian Fire Dance

MUSICIANS
Kian Soltani: cello; Christopher Schmitt: piano

I’m guessing Thomas didn’t watch the whole interview, because Byrne also said that Don Jr met with her for an hour at the NRA convention in 2015 and that was tasked with helping to blackmail Hillary.

Most people might just dismiss this shit as the ravings of a guy who’s up to his eyeballs in controversy and trying to regain something of his reputation, but Thomas can’t see past the opportunity to help out his ex-girlfriend one last time.

I should point out that the oft-spoke advice is as true today as it was when first uttered earlier this week: No matter who wins the nomination, Faux will dub them a “radical” who can’t win compared to the “moderate” Trump. Even if Joe prevails, his middle-of-the-road proposals such as adding a public option to the ACA and reaching out to “good Republicans” will be seen as the worst sort of “far-left radical” views that America simply won’t put up with.

Recently deceased billionaire and libertarian political donor David H. Koch was reportedly still camped on the edge of the river Styx this morning, unable to reach the afterlife after refusing to pay the required one-cent fee to access the ferry.

“I don’t see why there needs to be a blanket fee for everybody when we could simply allow the market to determine a fair price,” said Koch, shivering over a small fire at the edge of the ancient river that separates the mortal world from the realm in which all human souls rest together in eternity, free from pain and worry. “I see a lot of profit to be made here.”

Koch also voiced his displeasure at the state of the boat itself, a flat wooden ferry pushed along by Charon, the boatman whose sole purpose is to guide humans through the transition.

“This is what you get when you let the government in,” Koch said, pointing at the old boat where Charon waited to reunite Koch’s spirit with those of his beloved friends and family. “Open this market up, you’re going to get some investors down here and turn this whole operation around. I would be happy to pay a million or two for a nice yacht ride.”

Lyrics to “Nasty Man” (2017):

Here’s a little song
about a man gone wrong
while building up his evil empire.
And after months of ifs and buts
the papers got the guts
to call The Man Of The Year a liar,
to call the Man of the Year a liar.

Hustlin’ and bustlin’
across the big green lawn
stampin’ through the famous rose garden,
but every little rose
turned up its pretty nose,
saying “You owe the earth a pardon,”
saying “You owe the earth a pardon.”

Fumblin’ and bumblin’
through the halls at night,
turn every light switch on,
searching for the room
where you used to be the groom
but she’s packed all her jewelry
and gone.
Yeah, she’s scooped up all her jewelry
and gone.

Well, the former residents
and Mrs. President
left you corn and lima beans and tomatoes.
You said “Rip ‘em all out.
They’ll only give you gout
and that’s unbecoming for a future dictator,
and that’s unbecoming for a future dictator.

And you’re gonna build a wall,
the big-liest wall,
the beautifulliest wall around our borders
but here’s what I think,
you better talk to a shrink,
‘cause you got serious psychological disorders.
You’ve got dangerous pathological disorders.

Well, that’s my little song
about a man gone wrong.
He’s nasty from his head to his feet.
When the dirt on this man
finally hits the fan
and no one gives a damn about his tweets,
he’ll be finally and forever obsolete.

Priest Says Fat Women Won’t Go To Heaven, Woman Knocks Him Off The Stage

In the church, a priest is expected to perform ceremonies and give sermons to the congregation. The sermons usually address varied religious and scriptural topics. But it’s easy to get carried away when you’re preaching to a large gathering - like this priest in Brazil.

We’ll tell you what he said, but what’s more important is what happened to him after - a woman jumped on stage and proceeded to knock the said priest off the platform.

I’m pretty sure I said this would happen as soon as the announcement came out that she’d met the donor threshold:

According to the criteria that the DNC set forth, 2020 candidates must meet the donor threshold of 130,000 unique donors and 2 percent in 4 DNC qualified polls. Gabbard has exceeded the donor threshold but needs two polls to meet the debate criteria.

The Gabbard team is citing what they describe as several irregularities in the selection and timing of the DNC sponsored polls. The campaign points out “Gabbard has exceeded 2% support in 26 polls, but only two of them are on the DNC’s “certified” list.

And despite his brother’s death, nothing will change.

The Koch’s have forever changed American politics, showing that vast sums of money pumped into shadow organizations to move the needle of public perception is, indeed, profitable. They were, and are, fantastically successful in buying Republican politicians to toe their Libertarian/anti-regulation line, and it has helped them make bucketloads of money.

No, the survival rate is low, not zero. Also, the reason it’s so low is that 80% of cases aren’t diagnosed before stage four, not because it’s inherently “worse” than other cancers.

To hear the Gabbots tell it, the DNC is engaged in a shadowy conspiracy to suppress polls so as to prevent Tulsi from meeting the threshold, the evidence of this being…that fewer polls came out after the second debate than the first.

And that she totally met or exceeded the 2% mark on all these other polls, some of which are totally reputable because Nate Silver says so, so the DNC is deliberately ignoring them to stick to a narrow set of polls.

Oh, and they’re bitching up a storm that Harris got in and claiming this is also evidence that the DNC is restricting the field only to those they like, leaving the big question of how they didn’t find a way to disqualify Bernie if that’s true.

Yes, She Who Must Be Obeyed and I stared at each other after 23 years of marriage and realized that our union was a total sham, because women could marry women, and men could marry men! It shocked us that our union was just a sham, ruined by people who wanted all of humanity to be happy and be allowed to love the the people who they loved and bond with them for life, just like us heterosexuals.

We immediately realized we had been marginalized by people who believed in equal rights for all citizens of the US of A. How dare they!

He had a very rare type of cancer, and had (among other things) a liver transplant as treatment. After that, with no immune system (immunosuppressants for the rest of his life), any cancer or any recurrence would kill you.

(I’ve heard the stories too, but a liver transplant doesn’t sound very alternative to me.)

1. To combat veterans’ suicide, Trump says he has ordered the VA to “buy a lot” of an unproven and potentially dangerous new anti-depressant that costs as much as $885 per dose.

The decision will benefit one of Trump’s biggest donors. popular.info

Trump is a grifter par excellence, as are most business leaders who support him. It’s a disgrace if the VA purchases this unproven expensive product to enrich Trump’s donors. Of course, the VA may ignore Trump’s “orders”.

Please don’t yabutt me about pancreatic cancer. It kills everyone who gets it, because it is metastatic as hell. RBG is going to die because of it. Full stop. It is very sad. It is awful. But it, or it’s metastatic nature, is going to kill her.

This is her *fourth* bout with cancer. It just showed up somewhere else and a more lethal place.

I think it is just awful. I respect and admire that woman like few others. She has been a rock for women’s rights for decades, a rock for *all* human rights, and a bright light to which humans should aspire. I mourn her illness, but accept it’s inevitable conclusion.

Yes, but the fact that he was eligible for a liver transplant “treatment” implies that it was caught early, as any cancer remaining or recurring would kill you at once because of the immunosuppressants. Which suggests that he didn’t delay.

So, I woke up this morning and saw that Trump’s still ranting about China and tariffs. Nothing new there; it’s to be expected at this point. But here’s the thing - China has been through much worse than Trump.

Look at China’s history of the 19th and 20th Centuries; the Opium Wars, the first and second Sino-Japanese Wars, the Taiping Rebellion ( a conflict that left at a minimum 20,000,000 dead….no one really knows for sure and I’ve seen figures that rival the death toll of WWII) the disastrous Great Leap Forward and the famine that followed which left millions dead in its grim wake, caused entirely by Mao’s recklessness and ignorance.

The Chinese are keenly aware of their not-so-distant history.

Trump is nothing compared to what China went through in the last two centuries. They’ve suffered far, far worse than anything a shady businessman from Queens can send their way.

Jobs was also notorious for his fasting, lack of good personal hygiene and poor eating habits. Despite being stupidly fucking rich, he didn’t take good care of himself.

Something tells me RBG remembers to eat her greens.

Jobs also wasted 8 months pursuing alternative medicine after his initial diagnosis.

It speaks volumes of Jobs’s hubris and ego that after being essentially given a death sentence, he decided his doctors (probably the elite of the oncology field) were fucking idiots and he’d beat them at their own game.

I don’t know RBG that well, but I like to think that she’s nowhere near as arrogant as that.

Andy Kaufman also died as a result of seeking out alternative cancer treatments - most famously, he took a trip to the Philippines for so-called “psychic surgery” about two months before his death from large-cell carcinoma, an extremely rare type of lung cancer. From what I remember, he did also pursue conventional cancer treatments, but that wasn’t until the cancer had spread from his lungs to his brain and needless to say, by then it was far too late.

OK, so I spoke to a couple of my online students in China, Shenzhen specifically - they’re involved in IT.

Their view was that among the tech startups in Shenzen, they have no problems with what Trump is doing right now in regards to the ongoing trade war, because they’re now getting a lot more support from the central government in Beijing, mostly in terms of increased funding in order to accelerate their development so they can be self-reliant - which in the long term, will not be good for US tech companies. The general view is that while yes, there will be some short-term pain, they are looking at a much further horizon.

Those IT students in Shenzhen both said they kind of hope Trump wins a second term, because that will all but ensure that the 21st century will be the Chinese Century.

Trump’s incompetence is going to take decades to repair.

Dr Lizardo  Aug 24, 2019 • 4:09:47am

From the NY Times:

It became clear in real time how the risks of an escalating trade war and the fraying of longstanding financial and political ties could quickly outpace the ability of central banks — the normal first responders to economic distress — to do anything about it.

President Trump’s shoot-first approach adds to the risks at a delicate moment, with major economies in Asia and Europe already teetering and policymakers’ capacity to contain the damage in question.

“The escalation, the unpredictability, the erratic nature of policy developments is central to what is going on, and these aren’t things you can plug into an economic model,” said Julia Coronado, president of MacroPolicy Perspectives, an economic consultancy. “Something is breaking. It’s very dangerous.”

It is different, though. The GOP is borrowing within the current economic system. Their borrowing is not undermining the value of the dollar. The idea of printing more money just means that the dollar is worth less than what it was before that money was printed. And we call that inflation. And to print enough money to pay for a green new deal lead to some serious inflation.

Yes and no. If you add the Clone Wars animated series to the mix, you see a much better Obiwan as an instructor and you also see an Anakin that was actually a decent person. The aspects of them both in the movies were not as good. But as I watched the series it became easier to understand why Anakin’s fall was a tragedy and not just a plot point to tick off.

Does it though? There are very powerful deflationary forces in the world, and there are still a lot of prime age Americans who aren’t employed. I only took one year of econ, and I wasn’t an A student… but I do remember that how much money we print is supposed to keep relatively close to how much productivity increases.

The few other things I remember from that 30 years ago class… MV=PQ (i.e., every dollar you spend someone gets, every dollar you get someone spent it); and money in the economy is like water in the ecosystem, it needs to keep circulating. If you let it stagnate in too few places, that leads to either mosquito-borne epidemics, or social unrest.

I believe that Keynes was way more correct about responding to the market than Friedman, especially in regard to reponding to downturns. But no model is absolute, as can be seen in the failure of Keynesianism to properly deal with the effects of the oil embargo of the late 70s. But money’s purpose is to be a way to exchange our labor, and by putting more money in, not tied to labor, just means that the prices of goods and services will just go up to match the change. It won’t necessarily help introduce new goods and services.

Econ classes at Claremont in the 70s, we were taught that Friedman was full of shit, that his theories benefitted one small sector of the economy at the expense of everyone else. We were Samuelson people. Very Keynsian.

Yeah, that’s gonna be some major competition for Netflix.

Looks like Disney+ will support 4K without an upcharge (*cough*Netflix*cough):

Disney’s upcoming Disney+ streaming service is shaping up to be quite the deal. According to CNET, the service will launch on November 12th with support for four simultaneous streams and 4K included, all for the base price of $6.99 a month. Subscribers will also be able to create and manage up to seven profiles on a single account.

That will make it highly competitive with Netflix, which raised its prices earlier this year and has in place stricter limitations on simultaneous streams. Netflix now costs $9 a month for a standard definition plan with only one available stream. If you want HD streaming, you need to pay $13 a month, and that gets you two simultaneous streams. For 4K and four simultaneous streams, it’s $16 a month. (The company also recently bumped prices in the UK.)

Now the question becomes how well both services deliver a true 4K stream - I’m seeing lots of complaints on Netflix’s 4K streaming….

I do believe that we will have to pass more laws mandating that we repond to climate change, at the expense of some other things, some of them obvious, like coal, some of them a bit less obvious, like defense spending. We’re not going to be able to force the market to repond to it by just throwing more money at it.

So my state (MS) has a GOP runoff this Tuesday for several races, including Governor.

That race is between our current Lieutenant Governor (and former state treasurer) Tate Reeves, who is a jackass, and Bill Waller, a guy who just joined the GOP in January of this year.

So of course I’ve been getting bombarded with mailers all week.

I got one just this morning for Reeves. In it, he states that if Waller gets elected and the Medicaid expansion (which Waller supports) goes through, it will put
“300 000 more people on welfare.”

ON WELFARE. And that’s not me paraphrasing. That is what it fucking says verbatim on this mailer.

Reeves is outspending Waller by several magnitudes at this point and seems the likely winner on Tuesday but damn if I wouldn’t love to see that asshole go down.

Yeah, I saw the Penn and Teller Bullshit! episode about Mother Teresa (also featuring the Dalai Lama and other alleged saints). Mother T’s emphasis on suffering, which entailed real suffering by real people in her hospitals, was downright horrifying. The point is, though, that Goertz and other RWNJs regard her as a real saint, and somehow see Cheeto in the same category.

There have been times when inflation has gone out of countrol and has wrecked economies. And printing money has been one of things that has made it worse because it’s a self-defeating problem, because the very fact of printing money just to have money makes the price of the money go down (think of the suitcases of German Marks during the great depression). It is a very real possibility, especially when printing money isn’t tied to something like productivity.

My point is that for decades we have made people suffer unnecessarily due to overblown fears of debt, taxation and inflation. There are things we absolutely need to do and we shouldn’t be paralyzed by the “how are you going to pay for it?” Question. The world is a very different place from 40 years ago, and inflation remains flat on its back.

On Friday, two men in Great Falls were sentenced for crimes committed while pretending to be military veterans.

Judge Greg Pinski placed some unique requirements on their sentences.

Ryan Morris and Troy Nelson both claimed to be military veterans in an effort to receive lesser sentences and be eligible to enter Judge Pinski’s Veterans Treatment Court.

During Friday’s proceedings, Judge Pinski made it clear that their dishonesty and acts of stealing valor will not be tolerated.

And I am not surprised that this Jesusbot was let off the hook…for now…

The state of Kentucky must pay nearly $225,000 in legal fees and court costs incurred by couples who sued then-Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis in 2015 because she refused to issue marriage licenses due to her religious opposition to same-sex marriage, a federal appeals court ruled Friday.

Davis’ attorneys at Liberty Counsel noted that the former clerk herself was not held responsible for the court costs and fees in the Miller case.

BUT

In a separate appeal involving court costs and legal fees claimed by another couple, David Ermold and David Moore, the 6th Circuit on Friday agreed with the district judge that Davis held sovereign immunity as a public official but not qualified immunity as an individual. Unlike the Miller case, the Ermold case is still in its early stages, and no actual money has been awarded yet. … “Regarding Kim Davis, this case is not over,” said Mat Staver, an attorney with Liberty Counsel.

To wit:

When they complete their prison terms, they then must complete Judge Pinski’s additional requirements before they can be considered for parole.

Both men must wear a sign at the Montana Veterans Memorial during each Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremony while they are under court supervision; the signs will read: I AM A LIAR. I AM NOT A VETERAN. I STOLE VALOR. I DISHONORED ALL VETERANS.

In addition, they will be required to complete the following:

- Hand-write the names of all 6,756 Americans killed in Iraq and Afghanistan wars
- Hand-write the obituaries of the 40 Montanans killed in Iraq and Afghanistan wars
- Write letters of apology to the following organizations: American Legion, AmVets, Disabled American Veterans, the Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Vietnam Veterans of America
- 441 hours of community service

Certainly “just”: but I’m wondering if they have any grounds to appeal those conditions…?
