Axios: Trump Told NatSec Officials He Wanted to Drop Nuclear Bombs on Hurricanes

Politics • Views: 33,977

Not much to see here, just the president of the US telling his national security officials that the US should drop nuclear bombs on hurricanes to stop them from hitting the US.

You know, just some more of that perfectly normal presidential brain-storming stuff.

During one hurricane briefing at the White House, Trump said, “I got it. I got it. Why don’t we nuke them?” according to one source who was there. “They start forming off the coast of Africa, as they’re moving across the Atlantic, we drop a bomb inside the eye of the hurricane and it disrupts it. Why can’t we do that?” the source added, paraphrasing the president’s remarks.

  • Asked how the briefer reacted, the source recalled he said something to the effect of, "Sir, we'll look into that."
  • Trump replied by asking incredulously how many hurricanes the U.S. could handle and reiterating his suggestion that the government intervene before they make landfall.
  • The briefer "was knocked back on his heels," the source in the room added. "You could hear a gnat fart in that meeting. People were astonished. After the meeting ended, we thought, 'What the f---? What do we do with this?'"

Let’s take wagers to guess his next harebrained scheme. Rake forests to prevent forest fires. Wait, no, he already said that. He wants to buy Greenland! Damn it! He said that too! Have his Dept. of Energy secretly haul radioactive waste by rail to Nevada. You know what? He actually *did* that. He has a plan to stop all the water in California from going to the ocean! Tim Apple’s going to help him out with that ‘cause he lives in California and is really rich. A middle income tax cut for North Korean citizens. There’s too much water between the west coast and Hawaii, perhaps we can move that water closer to Africa.

Charles Johnson  Aug 25, 2019 • 5:33:03pm

I just sent this note to the Media Bias/Fact Check site:

We just discovered this section at MBFC:

mediabiasfactcheck.com

It’s fair to describe our site as being on the left of the political spectrum, but I have to take issue with this part:

“They also occasionally publish unverified stories such as this one. (D. Van Zandt 1/22/2017)”

The link goes to this article at LGF:

littlegreenfootballs.com

This is clearly labeled as a “report,” sourced to The Huffington Post, and not presented as verified information. But now, in the time since that article was published, Trump has done exactly what the article described. So continuing to label this as an “unverified story” is not accurate. In fact, we pride ourselves on being very scrupulous about NOT publishing questionable stories.

We’d appreciate if you’d strike that one sentence, because it’s a negative mark that’s not deserved.

Regards,
Charles Johnson

Reminds me the last episodes of the Reboot reboot first season. Behind the spoiler section in case anyone is still interested in that series.

The plot involved a weather altering machine and a hurricane heading towards California. The protagonists were able to stop the machine with 15 minutes before landfall. And by 15 minutes, they meant the main body of the storm without any winds or rains.

So much was wrong with that sequence that it soured the series for me, even before the season finale.

Trump would look weaker having to do a primary debate. I don’t remember GHW Bush agreeing to any with Buchanan in 1992, and I doubt Carter agreed to debate Kennedy in 1980.

“…Sure, the verdict may not be in just yet. But when the radioactive dust settles, we could be looking at a game-changing moment for a young presidency. Trump may have ruffled some feathers with less-than-sensitive remarks to the New York Times’ Maggie Haberman that the nuclear holocaust would be “way bigger than the old Holocaust,” but let’s be clear — political correctness has never been this man’s game. For a president with his eye on 2020, an uncertain path to reelection just got a whole lot more manageable, with the threshold for victory in the Electoral College now down from 270 votes to 14. While thermonuclear annihilation may be an inelegant solution, it burnishes the public impression of Trump as a man of action — eccentric, perhaps, but someone who at the end of the day isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty or seek out unorthodox solutions.”

There’s too much water between the west coast and Hawaii, perhaps we can move that water closer to Africa.

stage II of trump’s fascist plan that will really get going if he’s reelected

Donald Trump apparently has at his disposal a “loose network of conservative operatives” who are collecting and compiling damaging personal information on journalists deemed unsympathetic to the regime, as well as their families.

The New York Times reported on the operatives on Sunday, saying the purpose of the network was to further discredit news organizations and their staff among Trump’s base. It sounds like v2.0 of Trump’s nonstop “Fake News” gaslighting campaign, in which he and his enablers call members of the news media the “enemy of the people,” a term often used by authoritarian regimes including Stalin’s Soviet Union and Nazi Germany.

The Times said this group of political bullies has compiled “dossiers” on journalists that include “potentially embarrassing information” dating back to more than a decade. It already has used some of the information to attack journalists at CNN, The Washington Post, and The New York Times, which are frequent targets of Trump’s hostility during the president’s hate rallies in various cities across the nation.

When I was working as a ski tuner at Colorado Ski and Golf in Aurora, CO (purportedly the largest ski shop in the world, and I don’t doubt that claim, they got *everything*) it was right at the crossroads of a high concentration of department stores and casual dining joints. I had a wide variety of options for lunch, Five Guys, Tokyo Joe’s, all the major burger joints, hell there was a Hooters right across the street. I packed my own lunch three days a week and ate out two days a week during my workweek. And the place I went to the most often… was Popeyes. Their spicy chicken tenders are freaking dank.

And yes, next time I’m down in the city, I’m going to go get one of their chicken sandwiches.

And that’s fine. The dining options, though not what I would call inexpensive, are great. Any family owned Mexican restaurant within a hundred mile radius of me will serve up the best freaking Mexican food.

And if you want a great burger, if you’re in Eagle go past the Burger King and Wendy’s and go to Expert Burger. Yum.

have seen speculative comments that suggest that the pain suppression used is a source of worry in the Luck family, due to the constant injury and rehab. If true, fear of addiction to pain medication (and its epidemic onset in the US) and never getting your body to heal sure sounds like a possibility. Plus, from what I have read, the Colts are letting him keep his contract money, instead of doing a clawback, which makes me think that perhaps the team and even the league may have some culpability in what has taken place with Luck’s medical and emotional condition.

Luckily, here up in the mountains, sativa is readily available at weed stores that are not chains. It’s a little more expensive, the nearest weed store from me charges $10 a gram for the best stuff. Pure sour diesel, AK-47, white widow, they’re hard to find but I’ve seen them in the non-chain stores.

G-7 countries have agreed to an immediate $20 million fund to help Amazon countries fight wildfires and launch a long-term global initiative to protect the rainforest.

The announcement came from French President Emmanuel Macron, the host of this year’s meeting of G-7 leaders, and the Chilean President Sebastián Piñera. Macron said that the Amazon represents the “lungs” of the planet and that leaders were studying the possibility of similar support in Africa, also suffering from fires in its rainforests.

Macron said the U.S. supported the initiative, although he acknowledged that U.S. President Donald Trump had skipped Monday’s working session on the environment.

Satellites have recorded more than 41,000 fires in the Amazon region so far this year — with more than half of those coming this month alone. Experts say most of the fires are set by farmers or ranchers clearing existing farmland.

I don’t care what anyone says. He’s a profoundly stupid man who would likely in poverty if not for his Daddy’s money.

False.

He would absolutely 100% be in dead or in prison, not poverty, if not for his inherited wealth.

He is a con man of such immense proportions that his insatiable need to commit fraud, tax evasion, rip off marks, pilfer and embezzle, and assault women would have placed him in prison and likely dead from someone personally putting him in the ground before now.

If Trump were a person of normal means with his track record he likely would have been lucky to see 30 years old before being shivved in prison or becoming a stiff body in some random back alley.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. It’s a gloriously crisp and gorgeous morning here, with no humidity, which is a welcome respite from the typical summer heat.

But that’s not what I worry about.

We’ve got a Trump admin that doesn’t have a clue what it’s doing and no one knows what our foreign/economic policy is because Trump can’t even stick to a script for more than a few minutes at a time.

Are we lessening the trade tensions or are we doubling down and saying that we should have hiked tariffs on Chinese imports even more? Do we know?

Meanwhile, there’s a move in Congress by a Democrat no less (Harley Rouda - CA) who wants to ban transit systems from using federal funds to buy railcars from China.

The idiocy here is that it’d take years before a domestic company could pick up the slack and build railcars needed by domestic mass transit agencies. There are two other major producers of railcars in the US - Bombardier and Kawasaki, and neither are domestically owned companies. They have factories here to be sure, but their parent companies are overseas. That’d be no different than the Chinese companies that Rouda’s looking to ban.

Trump started a trade war with China. That’s entirely on him. When China didn’t immediately back down, Trump doubled down. That means more taxes Americans pay on Chinese goods. China retaliates by shutting down their markets to American farm goods - a near fatal hit to those farmers. Trump’s answer is to bail them out, thinking that this is winning. It’s not. Those farmers have lost markets that took them years to cultivate, and there’s no easy way for them to bring those goods to market elsewhere because the distribution chain was targeted to Asia, not elsewhere.

All Trump does is lie, and since no one in Trumpworld knows what the fuck they’re doing, they’ll end up ceding outcomes to foreign powers because they can’t help themselves.

Trump’s idiotic trade war is doing damage to the US that isn’t easily overcome. Trump needs to find a way for him to claim a win, when there’s nothing he can do other than completely cave in. He started something he can’t win, because he never realized the only way to win is not to play this idiotic economic deathmatch.

There’s a good reason trade wars aren’t easy to win - there are no winners. Everyone loses. Trade disputes are best left to the WTO and trade deals that improve things over time. Having an ignorant know nothing Trump in the WH is bad enough, but his misinformed/know nothing base continuing to support his dumbassery only emboldens him to do even more damage.

Instead of doing the TPP, which would have boxed China in and given the US more clout, Trump left that trade deal because Obama backed it.

Trump’s the proverbial bull in the china shop, and we are going to be paying the tab for a long time to come.

Trump’s wishing for a return to the status quo, so everything he says is about claiming a win for doing nothing but scrambling relations and the economy for months.

He doesn’t have any other out here. More trade war is bad, and he’s sabotaging the economy. Ending the trade war would stop the pain, but he wants to avoid looking like he capitulated. So he’ll drag it out to 2020 and then claim he got some concession where there was none. He will claim a win when it’s a return to what we had before (and after the farmers got their bailouts and everyone else paid hundreds of billions in tariffs).

Which takes a ton of money out of the economy. Paying high interest forever means people cannot buy into the economy, no disposable income, no buying a house (which younger people do not seem to want to do as much anyway), no spending on this or that gadget, it’s a downward spiral for the entire economy.

And the companies that fight those taxes then further fuck over my generation and those behind by either importing educated labor from nations that have free/subsidized higher education or simply offshoring the jobs to those nations, making it more likely that those who’ve taken on massive debt to earn their degrees will end up delinquent on their payments.

NOAA: Nope. That’s a stupid fucking idea that idiots have been asking since forever (inside voice). Public voice:

During each hurricane season, there always appear suggestions that one should simply use nuclear weapons to try and destroy the storms. Apart from the fact that this might not even alter the storm, this approach neglects the problem that the released radioactive fallout would fairly quickly move with the tradewinds to affect land areas and cause devastating environmental problems. Needless to say, this is not a good idea.

aside from the fact that clean water and air wasnt the answer to the climate change question, still the obvious question that nobody asks is “exactly what have you done to promote clean water and clean air?”

You are pre-supposing a non-flat Pluto. Australia is obviously flat.

“Obviously”?!?

Nothing is “obvious” about a country with kangaroos and platypuses. (Platypi?)

I’ve been there — eating Pho in a Hmong village in the Amazon is one of the weirdest relics of colonialism I’ve encountered.

Two wholly different possibilities indicated for its path in the next week. windy.com ECMWF, shows a hard hit on Puerto Rico, a double pass through Florida and a churn up the coastline. Possible pandemonium. Previously Dorian wasn’t showing up this developed on that forecast until passing over the Panhandle and it was to hover in the gulf. GFS has it less organised over the islands then quickly intensifying but then it doesn’t much reach the mainland, the eye just skirting NC. (idk nuffin, just sharing because I was curious myself. Hopefully just a weather-watching exercise and not bad news.)
