A Selection of the Embarrassing Bad Craziness of Trump at the G7

Just a few snapshots of Donald Trump’s latest horribly embarrassing field trip to the G7 meeting.

There’s much more, of course. This tweet says it all:

Trump is malicious.

But we’re in the thick of the hurricane season now so he’ll once again show how clueless he is.

Anyway: Dorian may or may not make it to the US as a TS, as some models differ on whether it can survive the islands. If it does survive then currently the projected path should be into south Florida.

Here in SoCal… it was relatively muggy (for us anyway) last night. What remained of TD Ivo’s lower level water vapor came by. I had hoped the storm would have survived long enough to bring us some showers, but alas, like most storms it died southwest of us, down by Isla Guadalupe. A little stream of WV can be seen still coming up from a small thunderstorm on Ivo’s north side, the WV of which is merging with the earlier flow:

From the last thread:

re: #390 sagehen

Great. So our olds are the top 3 spots, just when president’s age-related dementia becomes front page, top of the broadcast, news.

There’s still a long way to go, we’re still 6 months or so from the first ballots actually being cast. A lot can change between now and then. Especially since all the real contenders are now going to be on a single debate stage.

As the guys on Pod Save America like to point out at this point in 2004 Lieberman was the frontrunner; and in 2008, it was Rudy and Clinton as the frontrunners at this point.

Oh, I know you’re not. I know there are plenty of people who have nothing to do with that movement that have large families by choice. I was merely offering up one possible reason he might have that many kids. He IS a Republican after all.

President again pivots, as he always does when asked about #climatechange, to saying how he wants “clean air and clean water.” Completely avoids actual issue of climate change.

like i said downstairs,

still the obvious question that nobody asks is “exactly what have you done to promote clean water and clean air?”

He’ll say the air and water are cleaner than ever before, and it’s all his doing, then he’ll start riffing on how Obama didn’t have air and water this clean, and that windmills are stupid and cause cancer.

Challenged on any of this, he’ll call the reporter nasty (if female), and Fake News (if male), before talking about HIS stock market and how you you’re only allowed to measure it from the day he took office, not the beginning of the year, and that somehow the trade war with China is going SO WELL he’s thinking of doing one with Europe.

Cotton’s making the claim that it was his idea, which is, yes, delusional, but it’s worse than sycophantic, because it’s just stupid - WE DON’T BUY AND SELL COUNTRIES AND THEIR POPULATIONS ANYMORE!

Honestly, at this point it wouldn’t surprise me if Cotton said that the US had been so insulted by Denmark’s dismissal of the idea as absurd that we should just TAKE Greenland from them out of spite.

Dr Lizardo  Aug 26, 2019 • 10:58:28am

For any Lizards up in the Portland/Vancouver Metro area (Portland, OR and Vancouver WA):

Grocery workers from across Oregon and southwest Washington have voted to approve a strike if negotiations with four of the region’s largest supermarket chains deadlock.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555, a union representing more than 20,000 grocery workers in the region, has been pushing Albertsons, Fred Meyer, QFC, and Safeway to increase workers’ wages as negotiators hammer out new contracts for members.

After tallying up the final batch of votes from union members in Baker City over the weekend, Kelley McAllister, communications director for the union, said it’s clear members across the region “overwhelmingly” support calling a strike if future negotiations with employers fall through. The next meeting between the two parties is Thursday, Aug. 29.

“It’s possible we reach a tentative agreement,” McAllister said. “And it’s possible they throw the stuff on the table and say, ‘Our economic conditions are not their problem,’ and they walk away. If they do that, that’s not good. That feels to me like asking for a strike.”

McAllister added it’s also possible no resolution is reached and the negotiations spill over into future meetings.

Counterpoint: Some of us Boomers have seen our parents gradually slide into dementia, and so are acutely aware of how this year’s forgetfulness about unimportant stuff becomes next year’s circular conversations, covering the same questions over and over, and the year after that no longer reliably recognizing their own children.

Trump, Sanders, and Biden don’t belong in the race, honestly. They’re all as old as a President should be at the end of their term, not the beginning.

meanwhile trump’s got like 3 opponents, wont debate any of them, might not even be on the ballot in all states. and you have states like was it SC cancelling the primary?

THE JEWISH SAMURAI (in spoiler tags for those who don’t like old-fashioned Mel Brooks style humor)

The Emperor of Japan called for the most skilled Samurai in the world to display their expertise.
The first Samurai warrior released a fly, and with one flash of his sword neatly sliced the fly in half.
The second Samurai stepped up. Another fly was released, and with two flashes of the sword the fly was cut up into four equal parts.
The third Samurai, who had spent many years in Palestine, stepped up. The fly was released. The sword flashed so fast it was a blur. The fly fell to the floor. Then, after a minute, it flew away.
The Emperor exclaimed, “But, you did not kill the fly!”
The Samurai said, “No! I gave it a bris!”

Looks like China’s been doing some winning lately - and I don’t mean Trump-style “winning”, I mean winning. Like this:

A senior U.S. Indo-Pacific Command officer August 15 confirmed Cambodia and China are proceeding on a base for China’s navy in the Southeast Asian country’s Preah Sihanouk province.

Army Brigadier General Joel B. Vowell said construction would begin next year at Ream Naval Base, confirming to a group of regional journalists here that Cambodia will grant China access to the deep coastal waters on the Gulf of Thailand.

“We have information that tells us that there will be some development by the People’s Republic of China to facilitate a naval base at Ream,” said Vowell, the command’s deputy director for strategic planning and policy.

“So that tells me they want to build something there, facilities to wharf, to house and sustain naval projection of combat power from Ream,” he said.

Pentagon officials in Washington would not comment on Vowell’s remarks.

Vowell called China’s military extension plans in Cambodia “a big concern” for the U.S. and its allies in the region.

I find this happens often, that you go your whole life without ever hearing a word and suddenly you hear it a lot.

In fact, there was an episode of “That Girl”, the Marlo Thomas sitcom from the late 60s that talks about this, and the word is “baguette” - which I literally had never heard before that episode but then came up in other discussions that very month.

It never occurs to these people that even if we COULD ‘bring the jobs back’, either they’d have to pay really low wages and no benefits, OR the goods would be so expensive that nobody not already rich could afford them.

These jaspers think there are people in China and elsewhere, working with 1950s technology, doing exactly the jobs that Americans used to do, rather than a lot of technology doing most of that and a much smaller number of people to turn out the same quantity of goods.

After all, we’re talking about a guy who thinks “We’ll stop testing now that we have a working thermonuclear bomb and missiles we can hit you with, but here’s some nice letters while we build up our arsenal” is an acceptable response to our demand that NK denuclearize.

So what “jobs”, exactly, does this moron “Leo” want “brought back” to the US? Manufacturing of cheap consumer goods? Electronics? Clothing-industry sweatshops? And how, exactly, would all these “returned” industries be able to compete on prices? Especially having to be, in effect, re-created from scratch at 2020’s cost levels? I’m sure that, technically, rebuilding sectors of the US economy to replace what we import from China could (theoretically) be accomplished: though at what cost? Something these simpletons who seem to actually “think” in Trumpian clichés never quite get…..

I think many Dems are seeing him as Obama, but without the pesky blackness*, but really, Joe is Joe, the walking gaffe machine, and he’ll keep saying things that make people cringe. Plus, one debate performance where he comes across as a doddering old fart, and he’ll be toast.

*Because many Dems, apparently especially black Dems, seem to be afraid that any deviation from The Norm will drive more voters away than it will attract

Biden had 100% name recognition and the nostaglic glow of being Obama’s guy. The problem for frontrunners in that position in primaries is they really don’t have anywhere to go but down. It happened to Clinton in 2008; it almost happened to her in 2016.

I fully suspect that Joe will find a way to shoot himself in the foot between now and February that will see him drop even further off. I also don’t think Sanders really has that much to offer and I expect him to fade at some point too. Which means, my hunch is, that the nomination is Warren’s to take at this point (assuming no surge by Harris/O’Rourke/Castro/Buttigeg)

So, Weigel is touting a Monmouth poll that shows Biden slipping significantly against Sanders and Warren (essentially a 3 way tie).

There are huge problems with the poll, not the least of which is that this national poll has a MOE of 5.7 and a sample size of registered Democrats of under 400 (which helps explain the high MOE).

But people will take this to mean something. Don’t.

It’s confirmation bias for those who think that Biden’s seriously falling in the polls, or that Bernie and Warren are really leading, or something in between.

It’s a single poll that seems to be an outlier and the fundamentals on the poll are iffy at best.

This poll isn’t worth the time it took to me to post about it.

Moron still moron-ing: Sen. Tom Cotton beating the drum in the NYT for the “let’s buy Greenland” bandwagon.

Basically, his “argument” - larded with historical irrelevancies: Cotton (unsurprisingly for a GOPer) seems to think it’s still the 19th Century - is that we “need” to acquire Greenland, since the Chinese are looking to grab it first.

It’s ironic that their know nothing supporters/followers will believe it each time they tweet it notwithstanding the fact that the parties have flipped positions since the 1860s so that the GOP stands with the white supremacists, Jim Crow, slavers, etc., while Democrats are supporters of civil and voting rights for minorities.

California is leading a nearly 20-state lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s abandonment of a long-standing rule governing how long migrant children can be detained.

State Attorney General Xavier Becerra and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced the suit at a press conference on Monday, marking nearly the 60th time California has taken legal action against the Trump administration.

Joined by Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey and the attorneys general of 17 other states and the District of Columbia, the lawsuit challenges new rules set forth by the Department of Homeland Security last week that effectively undo the Flores settlement.

I get that. But the latest polling is showing that Biden has lost ground across the board among Democratic voters. And it may well be that we simply end up with another choice between two very old boomers. But I do still think it’s possible for Harris or O’Rourke or Castro or even Buttigeg to make a run now that the field is starting to narrow.

I do think the narrowing will help. And my preferred ticket right now is Harris/Beto. But Warren is the one right now kicking ass and taking names.

Reminds me of a Seinfeld episode I saw recently, the one where his girlfriend is a nudist, which initially seems good, but then Jerry discovers that, in addition to ‘good naked’ there’s also ‘bad naked’, like when she’s trying to open a jar of pickles. Also that there is no ‘good naked’ for men - “The hair, the lumps, it’s almost simian”, says Elaine.

Ana Marie Cox had someone on her pod recently (a lot of pods have run together lately for me) and one of them made the point that Evangelicals don’t really mind Trump being as terrible as he is because in their view they basically need a non-Christian to do the dirty work for them. Like some of them think that Pence is too gracious and “christ-like” to be able to do the messy work of bringing about the end times they so desperately crave.

Okay, so there’s one thing I want to know about Tammy LePetomane’s “Athleisure” wear:

“yoga pants that have room for packing a firearm.”

I may be crazy, but I thought the whole point of yoga pants was that they fit skin tight, and are very flexible so you can move in the into all the strange positions of yoga. So, you put a pistol in your yoga pants - presumably in back - won’t they keep sliding down your ass? Plus, if you’re wearing them to show off the ass you got from all that yoga, won’t the gun sort of ruin it?

Also, I know it’s shallow as hell but, ideology aside, I find nothing physically appealing about Tomi Lahren.

Same goes for Kaitlyn Bennett.

If you were 17, overflowing with testosterone and significantly lacking in higher analytic brain function… you’d probably feel differently.

I’m disappointed that Bennet has not made it to the September debate— he would be a far better candidate than Biden (or Sanders or Yang ). He is the right age with real experience. I do like Elizabeth, but feel that she is too old; and O’Rourke just doesn’t have sufficient experience.

Watching another stream, they’re remarking on the language used
In SpaceX scrubbed means done for the day, aborted means we’re gonna look at this and see if there is a quick remedy
SpaceX still streaming live, which leans toward the above “aborted” definition

Saddened to see that “dimwittery” is not in the English lexicon, because we sure could use it in the age of Trump.

Note, however, that “nitwittery” apparently is in the lexicon, so it’ll have to do.

Jennifer Rubin has an idea to attack DT:

Democrats should not get down in the mud with Trump. They should not spew obscenities, cruel remarks and bigoted stereotypes. However, they do want to name Trump’s greatest weakness and create an easy-to-remember message associated with the Democratic nominee. I humbly offer: “Stop the Craziness” (or “Stop the Crazy” or “End the Crazy,” if you want to fit it on a hat).
