I was curious last week what GOP strategist Liz Mair did to be named in the Devin Nunes lawsuit against Twttier. Some believe that she may be the individual behind the @DevinCow Nunes parody account, but this just didn’t seem right to me. The person who writes those tweets is amusing on a semi-regular basis, something that has never been said of Liz Mair.

This evening Newsweek has perhaps shed a bit of light on the situation. Maybe I am wrong, it’s not like the article linked totally clears her of having something to do with the parodies. Even so, awfully hard to imagine someone so difficult to like (even being anti-Trump) is behind the fun cow character.

Slamma bamma evangelist Todd Bentley is in trouble again.

Back in 2008, Bentley first became famous/notorious for his actions at the “Lakeland (FL) Revival.” At first it was his unconventional healing technique, in which he claimed God told him to kick people. He got a LOT of people to come out to Lakeland in the late spring of 2008 and GodTV was showing the revival nightly. He was attracting such great crowds that prominent charismatics, such as Ché Ahn, Bill Johnson, John Arnott, and Rick Joyner and Peter Wagner showed up to commission Bentley an evangelist in late 2008.

Two weeks later, the “revival” started to fall apart. The ABC show Nightline did a story about the alleged healings at the revival, including stories of people being raised from the dead, and found…nothing. A month after that, the revival had basically closed up shop, after it emerged that Bentley had filed for divorce from his wife and had had an “inappropriate relationship” with a ministry assistant.

Now, with that background, come up to 2019. Last Friday, a former ministry associate of Bentley’s named Stephen Powell accused Bentley of having a “perverse, bisexual open marriage.” The associate spoke of some incidents, including but not limited to naked pictures, sexting, masturbation and gay activities.

Here’s the article from Christian Post: christianpost.com

But, I should note, Powell did not provide any hard proof of the allegations. Instead, he claimed that he’d gotten a vision from God, that this whole thing was playing out in the “courts of heaven.” Powell claimed he tried to contact the men who had “restored” Bentley after the 2008 debacle. And then the report leaked out. One of the guys who restored Bentley in 2008, Rick Joyner, disclaimed any authority over Bentley, but accused Powell of operating in a “spirit of witchcraft” because Powell had gone public with his allegations.

This link to Charisma News, the house organ of the charismatic movement charismanews.com gives a window into the crazy going on.

Now, given Bentley’s past, I can surely see this. It’s not merely that he dumped wife 1 for wife 2. But there’s also the fact that he was convicted at age 15 of sexually assaulting a boy two years younger and spent time in jail. But I’m skeptical until I see more than “I had a dream/vision/bad indigestion and God’s going after this guy.” I thought we left spectral evidence in Salem in 1692.

If it does happen, I’ll probably have to take a week off after the election to recover. But Trump is making it more and more likely. We really need a huge voter registration and GOTV effort targeting this state, and probably a lot of people volunteering to be election monitors because the GOP running it are going to do whatever they can, and probably turn their heads whenever they can, to keep the numbers down.

There’s a lot to hate about social media, but I’ve been introduced to more interesting types of animals than I knew existed because of social media. Who knew hedgehogs could be cute? Or that bats liked to be scratched? Or watched a baby hippo grow up? That’s one good thing about social media. The rest, not so much.

If it were up to me? It would be Biden, Sanders (I know, groan, but he has support to keep going in the primaries at this point), Warren (I hate this fucking metaphor, but, my horse in the race), Harris, Booker, Buttigieg, and O’Rourke.

Update on a story I posted a while back.

Donn Wojtowicz

Lubbock man gets 4 years for impersonating public servant

A Lubbock man has been sentenced to four years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a third-degree felony count of impersonating a public servant.

Donn Wojtowicz, 48, was sentenced on Friday and as part of his plea a second case of impersonating a public servant was dismissed.

The plea stems from a mid-November incident in which Wojtowicz followed a Lubbock city council member in his car to the Costco on 34th Street and West Loop 289. Wojtowicz was driving erratically and began yelling at the council member once they both got to the superstore’s parking lot.

He walked to the council member’s vehicle and started yelling, saying he worked for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, according to a police report.

That council member called police and Wojtowicz left the area. However, his license plate number was written down and Wojtowicz was arrested a short time later.

I’ve been trying for some time to get the Travis County courts to appoint guardians for this gang and most of the legislature.
(Article V, Section 16 of the Texas Constitution of 1876 empowers county courts to appoint guardians for all “idiots, lunatics, persons non compos mentis, and common drunkards.” I figure that has the Perry/Abbott regime pretty well covered. )

First stroke, that sounds bad. I’m 4 years older than my father was when he died in 1992, that freaks me out. My future health possibilities freaks me out even more, especially since my high school friend just died of cancer. Facing my own mortality really sucks…

Many doc appointments and regulations regarding blood. Prone to clot problems in the legs and heart and strokes.

CNN: The US is throwing away at least 3,500 donated kidneys every year, study finds

UNOS has rules for when a less than optimal organ can be used in a transplant. They revised those rules a few years back to try and improve the situation, but the opposite occurred, the discard rate increased. The rate is also different depending on the region of the country.

But it’s also a good reminder that Trump/GOP policies are likely to result in more fatalities as a result of people unable to afford insulin and medical treatment to prevent the need for transplants all together, and then once they receive them, higher insurance costs due to preexisting conditions.

Well, when everyone was expecting multibillion dollar verdict and they got $574 million fine, yeah, J&J shares will rise.

Thing to remember is that J&J is facing similar suits nationwide and will likely lose ‘em in similar fashion. The ultimate tally will be in the billions of dollars, and it still wont be enough.

J&J also faces the ongoing talcum powder suits as well, and those have a similar trajectory too.

No. They don’t.

And as for Cottonmouth’s claims that we need to do more to protect our interests in the Arctic Circle, Trump has done nothing but cede to Russia. Trump’s given Russia carte blanche everywhere Putin looks. That includes Russia’s expansionist views towards the Arctic Circle and mineral resources there.

Trump hasn’t done anything, even minimal efforts like calling for new USCG heavy icebreakers that could help keep waterways clear of ice to allow navigation as the seas become less ice-choked thanks to global warming.

There are established diplomatic ways that one goes about making an offer to exchange sovereign territory for money. In one narrow sense, it is a “real estate deal”, but there is a lot more to it than that, and Trump and his people seem to be clueless of those conventions.

“One morning, as Brett Stephens was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that in bed he had been changed into a monstrous verminous insect. He lay on his armour-hard back and saw, as he lifted his head up a little, his brown, arched abdomen divided up into rigid bow-like sections. From this height the blanket, just about ready to slide off completely, could hardly stay in place. His numerous legs, pitifully thin in comparison to the rest of his circumference, flickered helplessly before his eyes.

Harrison Ford: “Stop Giving Power to People Who Don’t Believe in Science”

Celebrities often use their platforms to spread awareness on important issues. But while many of us have become numb to their warnings, there’s something about Harrison Ford that makes people sit up and listen.

Maybe it’s the cult following he’s acquired from playing heroic characters like Indiana Jones and Han Solo.

More likely, though, it’s because Ford doesn’t tiptoe around important issues, he charges through them with guns blazing.

Speaking at the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco this week, the 76-year-old actor and tireless climate activist issued a sober warning: “If we don’t change the path that we are on today, the future of humanity is at stake”.

Oh for fuck sakes:

Brazil rejects $22 Million in Aid pledged at G7 - Sort of

Hours after leaders of some of the world’s wealthiest countries pledged more than $22 million to help combat fires in the Amazon rainforest, Brazil’s government angrily rejected the offer, in effect telling the other nations to mind their own business — only to later lay out potential terms for the aid’s acceptance.

President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil expressed his ire in a series of Twitter posts on Monday, and specifically criticized and taunted President Emmanuel Macron of France, who had announced the aid package at the Group of 7 summit meeting. Their comments extended a verbal feud between the two leaders.

But early the next day, Mr. Bolsonaro offered possible terms for the acceptance of the aid package when he spoke to reporters in the capital, Brasília.

Straight out of the Trump playbook. This toxic fascism and incompetence is literally DESTROYING OUR PLANET.

Detroit company to start making Gibson guitars in Michigan again

Interesting backstory there. Echo Park Guitars has a dodgy rep in the custom guitar community - like the story says, they’ve built guitars for a lot of big rock stars, but there are a lot of stories out there about people who aren’t big rock stars getting treated like crap, with Gabe Currie promising delivery in 6 to 8 months but then not delivering for up to two years. And Currie regularly goes on Insta and mocks people who complain that his delivery is too slow and a lot of the work is sub-standard.

And Echo Park’s guitars price out for between 8 and 10 grand. Gibson may have bet on the wrong horse here.

And reminder: The Times eliminated its public editor because they figured the internet would serve that purpose instead.

Maybe I’m being too soft on Bret but let’s face it, we all talk about how Twitter is a cesspool and many here (including me) have never joined it. Perhaps his decision to quit was motivated by his realization that he, as a supposed voice of reason, had an over-the-top reaction to (as Twitter goes) a fairly mild insult — it didn’t even threaten his life or livelihood. He discovered that he really doesn’t have good control of his temper and perhaps he has decided a medium which encourages instant thoughtless responses, rather than carefully crafted comments, is too toxic for him to handle.

I certainly know that there have been times on FB when I’m tempted to call out someone personally for their absolute allegiance to Trump (or Bernie) but have always restricted myself to rebuttals, rather than insults (except for those rare occasions when commenting on news stories, where I accuse someone of working in St. Petersburg).

The problem is that it’s hardly the first time he did something like that, and judging from his appearance on MSNBC, it was all about his personal grievance and zero amount of soul searching on his part. Zero self-awareness and 100% victim complex.

re: #209 sagehen

Didn’t Gibson get in big trouble some years back for the sourcing of the wood they were using? IIRC, there was some big environmentalist whoop-de-do about importing old-growth deforestation something something?

Yes, the feds seized a bunch of rosewood from their Nashville plant, under suspicion that it was illegally harvested in violation of the CITES regulations that placed most rosewood on the endangered list. I believe a lot of it was ultimately returned to them, but it’s forced them and other guitar companies to come up with alternate woods (like pao ferro and baked maple) for use on fingerboards.

A lot of purists howled about it, but I’ve got a Les Paul with a baked maple fretboard and I honestly can’t tell the difference.

CITES regulations also restrict international shipping of rosewood. I missed out on a stellar Fender Telecaster a couple of years ago because a store in Montreal couldn’t guarantee that it would get through Customs.

Twitter is a place where these guys try to maximize their value/potential reach by getting more eyeballs. They then complain when people call them out for being racists, bigots.

He’s a thin-skinned bigot, racist-enabler, and decided to quit Twitter all while writing about how Twitter is mean to him and calling out one of the people who called him out.

If you are that thin-skinned, you don’t belong in the position of an op-ed writer at a major media outlet, because that’s your job. You write opinions, and if you can’t handle the fallout from your free speech, then you’re a garbage person.

Al Haynes, the pilot of United 232 at Sioux City, Iowa in 1989 has passed away.

A pilot who is credited with saving dozens of lives has died. United Flight 232 went into total hydraulic failure while Al Haynes was at the controls in 1989. With the help of three other pilots, he maneuvered the DC-10 to a miraculous crash landing in Sioux City, Iowa, and 184 of the 296 people on board survived.

Haynes is widely seen as a hero among aviation experts, akin to Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and his “miracle on the Hudson.” Haynes’ son Dan confirmed to NPR that his father had died.

Haynes was in the middle of the flight from Denver to Chicago when an engine suddenly failed. Shortly after that, First Officer Bill Records said he was unable to control the aircraft, as Haynes later recounted to New York magazine.

“I thought to myself, How are we going to keep this thing in the sky? You don’t train or drill for something like this, because it’s just not supposed to happen,” he said.

I remember that incident and later investigations. The engine in the tail failed severing all the hydraulic lines, meaning the plane was essentially a dead stick. They managed to keep the plane in the air by adjusting the power to each of the engines.

And there was a plane crash in Russia this past month where like the Sullenberger flight it ran through a flock of birds causing engine failures and he was able to crash with no loss of life.

It seems some birds in Dallas have been watching too much Alfred Hitchcock:

wfaa.com

Garry Black never thought picking up the newspaper in the morning would be an event.

The Black family lives in North Dallas, where trees are cherished and a healthy tree canopy is a result. But in the late part of July and early August, the family started getting visitors that made life interesting.

—-

“When he comes in it’s like, whoosh!” Black said.

There is a pair of Mississippi kites dive-bombing every visitor that comes near their nearly 60-year-old live oak. It is a spectacle done justice only by what the Ring camera caught.

Videos show several instances where UPS, Amazon, and post office drivers run to their vehicles as they are chased by a bird.

OT response from a 60-year-old

We used to be fond of any obscure British band that had not yet made it big in the ‘States (like Slade, Hawkwind, T Rex, the Strawbs, Barclay James harvest) and Pink Floyd was all but unknown in the ‘States until Dark Side of the Moon, which was about the last album of theirs that I paid much attention to, and I found The Wall so pretentious and self-obsessed that I really gave up on them after that.

Well, I’m 38.

I do listen to them.

I happen to think their music is some of the best rock music ever written. It’s great musically and I also like the deep political and cultural themes in a lot of it. It’s like they weren’t just trying to entertain, they were trying to send a message.

Now of course you need to understand the culture their music came out of to really appreciate it in 2019 but in other cases the songs will remain eternally relevant. The Wall, Part 2 and Money are just two examples of songs that resonate as well now as they did then.

I can’t really explain it that well, but when I listen to Floyd, I know I’m listening to something special.

It appears every last one of Trump’s photos are poorly framed or shot. Forget the subject - the objective photo is awful. Ignores rules of thirds, perspective, focus, framing, etc. It’s like a toddler with a camera is shooting for the first time.

Dumbasses are still trying to excuse Trump’s Greenland effort - as though it’s something worthy of doing (and if not Greenland, somewhere else?!).

Crudele is excusing Trump dumbassery and doubling down by claiming he’s a great businessman who knows how to close big deals and acquisitions.

Ummm… not so much. He is so leveraged right now he can’t build anything on his own and trademarks his name to plaster over buildings built by others. He can’t get loans from domestic banks because he’s a pariah.

But besides all that - none of these places are for sale and Trump has no way to “pay” for any of it. And knowing Trump’s history, everywhere Trump would look to acquire will be significantly higher cost than otherwise - because Trump wont care about the cost. He’ll just throw it on the tab and let others have to bear the burden.

Soon to be 56, Floyd is “ok”. Nothing special, nothing bad.

The Clash, The Who, Husker Du, The Replacements, The Foo Fighters, even Garbage were all far more important to me over the years. I saw the movie when it came out and that was probably the high point of Floyd for me. It’s slowly downhill since (espcially when Waters gets stupid).

I just heard on NPR yesterday that there was just a change in the rules to allow musical instruments to be made of rosewood and to get through international travel.

Seriously though, FUCK Trump for turning our country into this. How do you think this poor 17 year old feels about America now?

From the Harvard Crimson piece linked in no. 271:

“Applicants must demonstrate they are admissible into the U.S. by overcoming ALL grounds of inadmissibility including health-related grounds, criminality, security reasons, public charge, labor certification, illegal entrants and immigration violations, documentation requirements, and miscellaneous grounds,” McCarthy wrote. “This individual was deemed inadmissible to the United States based on information discovered during the CBP inspection.”

Well, OK, Chief: seeing as how Harvard U. itself not only arranged Ismail Ajjawi’s transit, his visa, AND is providing him with a scholarship, I think we can dismiss the “public charge”, and “immigration violations” crap: he’s 17, so presumably healthy (aside from Muslim Cooties or whatever), so basically, his rejection and deportation has to fall under those “miscellaneous grounds” - which sounds to me little better than “we don’t like your face”.

But yeah, seriously FUCK the government that can get away with garbage like this. Harvard seems quite pissed at this incident, though: I hope they can do something about it.

1. congress did not approve 92 billion
2. if they did, then was all 92 billion sent to the island?

no it was not. because

Congress has allocated $42.5 billion in disaster aid for Puerto Rico, according to federal data, but the island had received less than $14 billion through May, 2019.

that’s about a third of the allocated funds

and last, the 90-92 billion dollar figure was the total amount of damage done.

Pete Davidson’s set at the University of Central Florida Monday night reportedly took an offensive turn when he went on a rant about the audience, calling them “all fucking retarded.” The Hollywood Reporter says Davidson called the crowd “privileged little assholes,” after some people took out their phones. “I don’t have to be here,” the stand-up comedian said, “I can just give them their money back because I don’t give a fuck.” He added that the school was in the “middle of fucking nowhere,” and that the world is going to end in 25 years “because you’re all fucking retarded.”

This is the kind of outrage culture stuff that gets thrown in my face whenever I confront one of my relatives about Trump.

Not saying what he did was appropriate at all, but Pete lost his dad during 9/11 and it hit him really hard, he’s also had issues with substance abuse and has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. My mom has the same condition. People with it tend to have narcissistic tendencies and give no shits about anyone but themselves. They are also prone to exactly these kinds of emotional outbursts.

I hope Pete gets the help he needs.

I dunno….I clearly see the sharpened knives the college is preparing…..

That recording is of a band made up of old (very old), retired Royal Navy sailors in a small town in England. It is an old chestnut in the classical music-verse, akin to tapes of opera tenors cracking on high notes. Jollity ensues.

Domestic banks refuse to lend to Trump because he’s a credit risk. Most foreign banks wont lend to him for the same reason.

He’s gone to Deutsche Bank because they’re the only ones who’d lend to him.

Trump is a credit risk. He is a risk to defaulting on his loans, and therefore is charged higher interest rates than others.

He is highly leveraged and has low liquidity (cash reserves). Those are bad signs. So, even though he’s got a lot of NYC metro area real estate, the reality is that unless he sells them, he doesn’t have much cash on hand and has to borrow against himself to have cash. It’s a house of cards.

Oh, what that J-50 would be worth today…

Yea, it’s amazing.

I paid $50 for my J-50 in Macon GA in 1964.

A couple of years ago, was over at a friend’s house, and listening to his son play his guitar.

“Damn he’s a lot better player than I” and my J-45, Yamaha 12 string and, Ovation 6 string don’t get played much, so I gave him the J-50 and 12 string.

I’m glad that such nice guitars went to a good home.

Kept the Ovation to noddle on.

(Edited J-50 not a J-45)

Mormon church leaders explicitly ban all lethal weapons from houses of worship

The move comes in response to a new Texas law, which will allow licensed parishioners to carry firearms in churches, synagogues and other religious buildings.trib.al

How does that work? Can a house of worship ban guns by parishioners on its property?

When I was a young newlywed I had a next-door neighbor who was a young newlywed although she had been married for 6 months when I moved in.

Anyway there was a big stain on the ceiling in her kitchen right over the stove. I asked her what happened and she said she was cooking something in the newfangled pressure cooker when her husband came home and saw the jiggling regulator and was like “what does this thing do?”

Purdue is a privately held company and it’s believed that they have about $3 billion in revenue per year. This would basically try to settle for 4ish years of revenue, probably spread out over several years.

They’d get to write down the value so that the cost to them isn’t the full value of the settlement, but those funds would help states and localities suffering from the epidemic they started. Of course, Purdue and other pharma companies also benefit from the drugs that counter opiod overdoses and for treatment/withdrawal.

I’ve given away 3 guitars this year. I’m in a ‘paying it forward’ mindset nowadays.

There’s a shop in Brooklyn called Orphan Guitars, that sells guitars and uses part of the profits to buy local kids music lessons. I’m thinking of loading up 5 or 6 of my old acoustics and dropping them off there.

More seriously, i haven’t played my tele in a year because I love my casino coupe so much. I should probably find someone who can put it to good use. Then maybe I’ll get an inexpensive Ibanez 12 string electric.

The Mormons have excommunication; any parishioner who tries to “but state law says…” can be denied all religious ritual for all time. If they’re still believers they think they’ll be banned from heaven, if unbelievers they can be banned from their own kids’ weddings or grandkids’ christenings…

ETA: Mormons have as much enforcement powers over their membership as the Scientologists do.

Jews have nothing even vaguely similar. The most we can do is stuff like when Ruth Madoff tries to attend services, everyone sits as far away from her as possible and nobody will speak to her.
