Meanwhile another Pulpit Pimp gets caught fleecing the flock!

Federal agents from the Department of Justice are accusing Charles T. Sebesta, a prominent former leader at the Los Angeles Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, of siphoning off more than $11 million from the organization in order to fund a lavish lifestyle, including access to one of the hardest-to-get-into restaurants anywhere in America. Not only did Sebesta reportedly purchase a home with the funds, he also sprung for the ultimate Disney upgrade — a seat at the table at the expensive and exclusive Club 33 inside Disneyland.

Per the LA Times and others, Sebesta reportedly forged checks and used his position as a chairman for the Southern California Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist to draw in close to $11.5 million over the course of a decade.

The famed Orange County restaurant Club 33 actually sits inside the Disneyland park in Anaheim, but is only open to diners willing to pay an annual fee of $10,000 — and that doesn’t include the $25,000 initiation fee. Over the years, celebrities like Elton John and Tom Hanks have signed up as members.

While Sebesta reportedly did woo entertainment executives and folks from the sports world with dinners at Club 33, he could have spent far more if he had wanted. Disneyland has a separate meal at a space called 21 Royal that runs $15,000 just for the evening, and it’s billed as “the ultimate in Disney wizardry.” No word yet on whether or not Sebesta will have to formally rescind his Club 33 dining status.

CL’d re: screwing over poor and hungry children…

We do all these various things here: Coat drives, shoe drives, school supply drives. I have a friend who organizes a huge purse and jewelry sale that raises funds to help low income schools around the city. Low income kids do get meals at school here.

I have another friend who works with various groups to keep kids fed when school isn’t in session. (Lots of kids get one solid meal at school and that’s it, so when school isn’t in session, they are struggling for ANY meal.)

How is it that we’ve come to “Fuck you if you’re poor, starve?”

There just isn’t the proper words for how angry and frustrated this makes me every God Damn day. I can’t handle it.

Well, that is the thing. Russia has been run by the 100 families since the break-up of the USSR. They used to run the USSR, but are now “capitalists”.

Putin is their titular head, as long as he is in charge. He doles out the rubles to them and keeps the peace among them. It is an oligarchy and a cleptocracy, all in one. It is no wonder Mango Metamusselini loves loves him so much.

It is a spray-tanned spunktrumpet heaven.

And the Duetsche Bank records will absolutely confirm that Chito Bonito has absolutely had the Russians in his pockets for years, co-signing his debt. He has been supported by laundered Russian funds for years. It’s the only way he keep the plates spinning on the sticks this long.

Just ask Donny Jr., who bragged before the election (not since) that “a lot of our funding comes from Russia”.

It also helps to understand that even though co-signers can’t un-sign they can go public with proof of the arrangement. Meaning that, if true, once Trump denied any ties to Russia they had leverage over him. Which, yes, we already knew when the Trump Tower Moscow deal came to light, but this would be more proof of Trump’s repeated flagrant lies when it comes to Russian influence.

Also, if there are co-signers there are probably contingency side contracts in play.

You’re right. But the story itself is entirely plausible - I have little doubt that given Trump’s credit history (which is hot garbage), him needing a co-signer to borrow money* makes perfect sense.

*I wouldn’t lend Trump $20 to buy coffee and bagels without a co-signer and collateral…..and by collateral, I mean Mar-a-Lago.

Thanks for checking up on us though; I appreciate there is a group here which cares about us.

I’ve just been reading along when I had time since my last check in, since I didn’t have much to say about what’s going on in the world.

Things have been busy around Chez Tumbleweed: Tomorrow we have to take our car in to be assessed by the insurance company over the hailstorm a couple weeks ago, plus my wife needs to go to the dentist. We’re still waiting for the adjuster to come look at our house after the tennis ball-sized hail.

Regarding O’Donnell’s story about Russian oligarchs co-signing Trump’s loans, this is tangentially related:

I, and other Lizards, have been saying this since Trump was running for POTUS - that he’s up to his eyeballs in Russian Mob money and he’s been laundering that money using the Trump Organization and his real estate portfolio for at least a decade and a half, if not longer.

Checking up with Sen. Susan Collins of Maine:

Susan Collins ‘Sad’ Voters Might Punish HER For Impending Loss Of Reproductive Rights, How Rude! (Wonkette)

Maine GOP Senator Susan Collins has long enjoyed her reputation as America’s Reasonable Republican. The kind of Republican that Democratic moderates like to look to and say “See, that is how most actual Republicans are in America! They’re not stupid and evil like how everyone they elect is stupid and evil, they are just moderate evil. Just a little ‘don’t want to pay taxes’ evil.” The kind of Republican they could have a nice cup of tea with, have “reasonable disagreements with,” after which they can say, “We both have the same goals, just different ways of getting there” and feel very satisfied that they are nothing like all those polarized radicals out there.

As a result of this reputation, Democrats have never really mounted a very serious challenge to her Senate seat in Maine. After all, she’s pro-choice! There are many more terrible and not-pro-choice Republicans that have been more worth our time!

But then Susan Collins decided being moderate in temperament only is fine, and that she could reasonably get away with voting exactly like all of those wackier Republicans, so long as she was polite about it. She decided that it would probably be a good idea for her to vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, even as we all begged her not to do us like that. And now the motherfucking knives are out. And also the money. So, so much money.

(more, going into her record as moderate evil).

On farmers:

The flip has happened in Nebraska: Trump is now polling under water according to Morning Consult (from +25 on Election Day to -1 now).

I don’t know if our mere five electoral votes are worth it to the Democrats to try to compete for, but -1 makes us a swing state.

With the GOP struggling to hold Texas, they might be willing to sacrifice Nebraska. Since we have mail balloting like Oregon, a programme like Postcards to Voters might be very effective here to get people to mark the bubble for the eventual D candidate.

Moreover, Trump’s coattails for downballot candidates suck. That might be useful in ousting Sen. Sasse as well.

I’m going to head to bed, long day tomorrow. I just wanted to mark myself “safe.” /s

I’m sure the GOP is aware of that as well, and they’re probably not happy with having to spend money in what was their largest safe state to retain it.

That said, they never spent much money here either. I imagine this state wouldn’t be an easy pickup for the Democrats, and they might not want to invest limited resources here to do it, but flipping our five electoral votes and ousting Sasse would certainly sting the GOP.

It wasn’t long ago we had a Democratic senator. Unlike Wyoming up the road, the Nebraska Democratic Party is not a dead letter.

In case you were wondering whether YouTube kicking VDare off their platform would be permanent, the answer is “of course not.”

VDare is back; there is no way a libertarian outfit like Google is going to allow a money-maker like white supremacy stay off the platform long.

VDare posted to Twitter (because they won’t kick them off either) that YouTube reviewed their content and found that (their explicitly genocidal and violent content) did not violate the terms of service, so their channel was restored.

Make a very public claim “we kicked them off” then wait a few days and quietly allow them back.

If you type their name in YouTube’s search bar, all their videos are restored.

Then there’s VDare’s announcement on Twitter, with the post from YouTube showing they found no violation of terms-of-service.

VDare is also using the less-than-a-day ban to raise funds.

Holy shit, Boris Johnson is a madlad! He’s really going to ask the Queen to prorogue the British Parliament.

The Queen will be asked by the government to suspend Parliament days after MPs return to work - and a matter of weeks before the Brexit deadline.

The BBC’s political editor, Laura Kuenssberg, says it will make way for Boris Johnson’s new administration to hold a Queen’s Speech - laying out the government’s future plans - on 14 October.

But it means MPs are unlikely to have time to pass any laws that could stop the prime minister taking the UK out of the EU without a deal on 31 October.

A No 10 source said: “It’s time a new government and new PM set out a plan for the country after we leave the EU.”

bbc.com

This is it then - the biggest constitutional crisis since the English Civil War; suspending Parliament because they might well vote down BoJo’s Brexit policy.

Here in Czech Republic, Huawei just won a major contract to supply optical data network equipment for the Ministry of Finance.

Via Google Translate:

Huawei and Huatech will deliver DWDM networking technology to four sites where the Treasury operates and are interconnected through an optical network. It is the headquarters of the Ministry of Finance in Letenská Street, a branch in Voctářova Street, the Tax Office in Lazarská and also the building in Na Vápence. There is a data center under the State Treasury Shared Services Center (SPCSS), which is the entity that provides IT operations for the Ministry of Finance. However, this contract does not apply to the new data center in Zeleneč u Prahy, also under SPCSS.

Huawei won the tender several months after warnings about the company from the National Cyber and Information Security Authority (NUKK). The Ministry of Finance stated that it was approaching the contract with this knowledge and had evaluated the potential risks.

True enough, but there’s nothing stopping a new British government from applying to rejoin the EU if they so desired. That’s covered under Article 49.

In theory a new PM could do that as a massive “fuck you” to the Brexiteers.

True - and I also suspect the UK would have to make some major concessions. For example, ceding Gibraltar to Spain.

Which I’m sure a good many Brits would find wholly unacceptable.

I’m sure all manner of maneuvering is going on behind the scenes right about now in the UK. Oh, to be a fly on the wall.

In retrospect, the Scots should’ve seceded when they had the independence referendum. They may have been readmitted to the EU by now. This may break the UK.

Yesterday afternoon I was cleaning up in the living room and saw a car pull into my driveway and stop. The door opened and a guy got out, ran into the road and picked up a turtle, ran back to the driveway and found a safe place to let it go. I ran outside and thanked him. I live on a busy 4 lane road, the turtle’s chance of making it safely across were pretty much zero. For a brief moment I had some faith in humanity again.

Pound falls as Queen asked to suspend Parliament

The value of the pound has fallen following news that Prime Minister Boris Johnson is planning to suspend Parliament on 9 September.

The move is expected to prevent opposition leaders from passing a law to stop a no-deal Brexit.

The pound is down almost 1% against both the euro and US dollar. So £1 is now worth just under €1.10 and $1.22.

In retrospect, the Scots should’ve seceded when they had the independence referendum. They may have been readmitted to the EU by now. This may break the UK.

One of the major arguments about independence was the fact that it would leave them outside the EU with no guarantee of being let back in (Spain might have blocked it in order to set an example for Catalonia, for example)

The other reason was the uncertainty and lack of planning for what would happen after Independence…

That uncertainty did not hinder a majority for Brexit, after all, it meant no fore Foreigners taking our jobs and 50 million pounds per week for the NHS to train and hire new doctors, nurses and staff after all the Poles and Pakistanis flee!

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Aug 28, 2019 • 3:37:42am

The real reason Boris Johnson wants to suspend the British parliament

[…]

This is most probably his intention. Such a defeat will likely lead to a general election in early October - if not before - in which Johnson will enjoy significant advantages. Some recent polls suggest that the Conservatives enjoy a strong lead and Johnson’s novelty as a prime minister, as well as his enormous capacity to speak to voters and be listened to, will make him a hot favourite to beat his rivals, especially Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn, in a short, sharp campaign.

[…]

To get his election, though, Johnson needs to provoke his opponents into defeating him in parliament on a confidence motion. Judging by the reaction so far this morning, his opponents will do his bidding. Johnson’s outrageous act of seeking to suspend a hostile parliament, therefore, is entirely logical, even if it is a thrashing of the British constitution and its parliamentary democracy. It is also an astonishingly audacious move, which demonstrates how much he has seized the political initiative.

[…]

That people want a strong-man, combined with our general boredom due to the over-automation of our lives, will be the end of democracy.

And Corbyn is as big a failure as anything in politics. Old-time socialists seem unable to adapt.

Looking at the model output for Dorian, it’s quite clear that the uncertainty is great as the three major models come up with three solutions:

1) Dorian approaches Florida, then kisses the coastline and wanders north along the coast for 5 days then rapidly moves out to sea towards Newfoundland.
2) Dorian hits the central Florida coastline, crosses Florida, moves up the Gulf coastline of Florida, then enters GA and heads east to the Atlantic coast, wanders north to NC, then goes out to sea after 6 days of raining on the mainland.
3) Dorian crosses Florida, moves up to the panhandle, keeps heading north then northeast in the middle of GA/SC/NC where it becomes a remnant low and continues northeast.

However strong Dorian is when it hits the mainland, there looks to be about 5 or 6 days of rain ahead for the southeast.

I can remember back in the 70s and 80s Nebraska had 2 Democratic Senators and Democrats winning the governorship. We need to get back to the 50 state strategy and fight every election at every level!

Not to mention that Luck is the QB. Fair or not, the QBs are generally seen as the team leaders and the major factor in the rise and/or fall of teams alongside the coaches. Gronk was a tight end, albeit an elite one. While a good tight end will almost always make a good team great, they’re also not usually treated as a lynch pin position far as I’m aware, even with the rise of the position’s importance in the last couple decades or so.

So basically, fuck all can be done now, UK is headlong into unilateral No Deal Brexit because BoJo said so?

Fun. Fine. Fantastic. Nice to see the Tories just dispense with the idea of accountability and just muscle through anyways because what’s going to stop them. Clearly they’ve taken Trump’s examples to heart.

Everything across the world is just on a hard right-wing collapse that can’t be stopped, isn’t it?

re: #149 Belafon

What is it?

The Queen apparently approved the suspension of Parliament from mid-Sept through to October, the entire purpose of which so Boris Johnson can push through the No Deal Hard Brexit without any feedback or no confidence votes from MPs. It’s a pure power move to ensure nothing can prevent Brexit anymore.

re: #149 Belafon

What is it?

The British Parliament is to be suspended. Basically, this is BoJo’s move to either get a no-deal Brexit or alternatively, force a no-confidence vote so he can get to a general election. Frankly though, the latter - while an interesting idea, sort of ignores that Johnson could simply call a snap election whenever he wants to without having to suspend Parliament first.

What Boris is trying to do, it seems, is prevent Parliament from undercutting his threat of a no-deal Brexit, which is an idle threat at best, because the EU is at this point pretty much finished with their preparations for a UK crash-out of the EU.

It is the UK that will suffer the full force of a no-deal crash and burn. Not to say the rest of the EU won’t take a hit, but the UK will feel it the worst.

Though Isakson’s retirement/replacement may indeed open up an opportunity for the Ds next year: the seat was naturally a safe (R) otherwise: but I don’t know enough about Georgia politics to opine…..

ADD 2: found out that GA’s other Senate seat (Perdue) is also up next year: so two possible chances for turnover (unlikely, IMO, but possible)

With the UK out of the EU, they’re going to be just another backwater province with a small population and a small localized economy: but even if they do go through with an independence movement, there’s still no guarantee that a separate Scotland would be automatically admitted back into the Union. Yes, and there was a great deal of uncertainty about what would follow…which currency, what to do about UK’s nuclear weapons and subs (all stationed in Scotland) and whether they would be admitted to the EU.

Spain would probably have blocked Scotland in order not to create an example for Catalonia to follow. I believe that the EU would currently be happy now to let Scotland back into the fold when the UK falls away permanently.

Meanwhile in Italy, Salvini is absolutely losing his shit.

Nationalist League leader Matteo Salvini on Wednesday said the League would tell President Mattarella to end the “disgrace” of a government-formation bid by his former ally the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) and the centre-left Democratic Party (PD).
“This afternoon we’ll go to the Quirinal Palace and we’ll tell Mattarella to out an end to this indecent, disgraceful spectacle, without dignity or honour,” Salvini told reporters.
Salvini pulled the plug on the 14-month M5S-League government on August 8 citing inaction by the M5S, especially over a new high-speed train link to France.
The outgoing interior minister had hoped for a snap election to capitalise on booming poll numbers because of his anti-migrant policies.

Naive question: Would Donnie’s co-signer issue showed up by the mandatory audits the IRS conducts of all incoming potus?

based on absolutely no information, i’d say no

irs audits income and deductions w/r/t tax liability
the source of loan funds (generally) isn’t relevant

it could come up through questions about the deduction of the interest but even that still likely only goes to the legitimacy and source of the funds - ie the bank, not what dox had to be submitted to the lender to ‘qualify’ for the loan

(one man’s guess)

No, but it may well be the lesser of two evils.

Same here. It’d be very difficult for the GOP to defend a man, even if it is their POTUS, who’s been actively engaged in money laundering for the Russian Mob and quite possibly for the Saudis as well.

And if Moscow Mitch could pull this off:

Indeed it does - and pretty soon, we’ll probably all forget about Jared Leto’s take on the Joker. If Joaquin’s performance is as good as it looks in the trailer, he may well rival the late Heath Ledger’s bravura performance.
