I’d prefer a focused, well moderated, two hour debate.

I can dream, right?

I’d watch 3 hours of a REAL debate without the martial music, dumb gotcha questions and idiotic “lightning rounds.”

One of the biggest emotions the electorate has about politics is a deep, deep anger at how things are being done. They want CHANGE, That’s how Trump got elected…even though the change they got was not the change they wanted.

To tap into that, you nominate a candidate that embodies change. That’s Warren (and…sigh….Sanders). Nomianting Biden is Business As Usual and that will not tap into what the electorate wants.

In my mind, that was what made Obama and the coalition he built such a major winner, such that he was the first two-term president in years to win by better than 50% of the vote in both elections. If our candidate does not embody change, then there’s going to be a lot of voters who go third party or go home. Why? Because if it’s a choice between another 4 years of Trump or 4 years of Trump-lite, then what really is the difference? Yeah, we can overturn a lot of the policies imposed through regulation or Executive Order, but the will to change laws isn’t really there and I don’t feel that a Biden administration would want to risk stepping on the toes necessary if he feels doing so will hurt the chances of passing legislation he wants later.

OFFS, it’s hard enough to keep people’s attention for more than an hour these days, who besides political junkies is going to sit through 3 hours of moderators trying to catch candidates in compromising situations?

The Dem debate season is a circle-jerk. We never did a serious analysis of how Trump was allowed to get in, but a lot of it has to do with the last decade or so of the DNC.

For whatever it’s worth, there were no Marys in my graduating class. That said, since it only had seventeen people, that’s not a big sample.

I have an aunt named Mary, but that chart doesn’t go back to 1940.

Someone will have to prove that they can beat Biden, which starts in Iowa. African Americans are currently backing Biden in huge numbers because, while we talk about wanting change, they know it’s coming in a bad way unless we remove Trump from office.

FFS, I thought that when the number of candidates was halved, it would make the whole thing shorter and more pointed. I didn’t realize ABC would look on in disappointment that all 20 candidates wouldn’t make the debate and decide to tack on an additional hour. Are their talking heads paid by the word or something?

No, but a longer debate gives the network a great excuse to jack up advertising rates.

Why did you think it would make them shorter? The whole point of removing candidates was to give those that remain more time to talk.

That’s my point. It was already insane that we had two nights of two hour-long debates, even worse when CNN treated the choosing of who appeared on what night like the damned NFL draft. I didn’t realize ABC would decide that they could bork that chicken in a whole new way.

Yeah, Biden in particular doesn’t seem like a good match for the anger in the electorate. And, to a lesser extent, Harris and Booker (and somewhat Buttigieg and O’Rourke) has that same vibe of Business As Usual.

Warren and…sigh…Sanders…have that air of change and distinct difference. I think Dems ignore that to their detriment.

Oh, yeah, that’s definitely a factor. But that’s a factor that can change rapidly, once someone shows they can win (and Obama did that).

White Supremacist farmers backing Trump even as he takes away their livelihood.

Just goes to show that Pres. Johnson was exactly correct when he stated “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”

It is sad to think 67% of farmers are white supremacist scumbags. They deserve the financial beating they are getting because of Trump.

re: #21 Anymouse 🌹🎃

The chair of the Rockland County GOP is Lawrence Garvey.

His response to the video:

Rockland GOP Chairman Lawrence Garvey said while he appreciates James’ concern over the video, “I hope she will take a closer look at the real problems of overdevelopment and corruption that are plaguing our county.”

Garvey said, “For those not living in Rockland, it is harder to see the real and unique problems that exist here. They do not live with the burden that comes with overdevelopment and the risk it is to our first responders.”

Hey, my family used to live in Rockland. I saw the traffic and congestion from the failure of the county to provide proper infrastructure or zoning to address growth across the board. They wanted growth, but not from the Orthodox Jewish community, which is shifting the demographics in Rockland, particularly around Nanuet to Ramapo (I previously posted Nyack, but they are really centered on Nanuet to Ramapo along Route 59, which parallels the NYS Thruway).

I saw the growth of multifamily homes where there previously was forest or single family homes. I saw construction of yeshivas and shuls, and people wanting to move into the neighborhood because it was walking distance to a shul. I saw the traffic and the lack of sidewalks even as families tried to get to those shuls and yeshivas during the day, holidays, and on Shabbat.

Instead of making Rockland more livable and sustainable, they decided to attack Jews - particularly Orthodox ones.

The Orthodox community has its own emergency responders, including Hatzalah.

You’d think at some point the financial analysts would realize he’s full of shit and NOT take any damn thing he says at face value.

Nope. The stock market is by design to funnel money from the poor and middle class to the rich.

a) Trump makes BS statement.
b) Financial advisors tell mom and pop investor “this is the time to buy.” They do
c) Financial advisor makes money for giving advice
d) Market inevitably falls after Trump’s BS
e) Mom and pop are out their money, but folks who have microsecond access to the markets sell just as the market peaks, leaving tens of thousands of poor and middle class buyers who don’t have that access holding the sack.

When are we allowed to start calling Republicans “Nazis”?

When weren’t they? There has never been a time in my life when movers and shakers in the GOP weren’t Nazis. As long as they’ve been conservatives, they’ve been crypto-fascist. All they’ve done recently is drop the “crypto” part.

Everyone from the Koch Brothers to the John Birch Society, from Pat Buchanan to William F. Buckley, Jr. has always argued for the same thing (the “purity of America’s essence”).

As a member of the Gang of Eight who worked hard on comprehensive immigration reform, they had a bill that would have provided $46billion for security (not a wall), would have dealt fairly with Dreamers, and had other elements that would have rationally and humanely restricted immigration. It was blown up by House republican minority (Freedom Caucus) using the Hastert “Rule.” He was so pissed about this constant lying by the far right.

Twenty years ago I started a well-abandoned sci-fi novel in which a brain-in-tank experiment was accidentally contaminated with inputs from Dante. The motif was the mutual horror with which generations separated by 700 years would regard each other.

So what’s stopping Bennett from re-starting this initiative in the now-Democratic House? The Freedom Caucus - in the Minority - can’t do much if House Dems re-introduce something like the bill he says was killed. Of course, the Senate under Moscow Mitch would kill anything like this (and King Orangeanus would likely veto it as too-few people would die); but at least it would make a good campaign point.

Memo from Boston Children’s Hospital on Trump’s targeting of sick kids:

Dear colleagues,
There have been a number of reports this week about the apparent decision of the Trump administration to modify the “medical deferred action” program that allows non-citizens to continue to remain in the U.S. in order to continue receiving life-saving treatment after the expiration of their visas. As a result of this change, it has been reported that thousands of immigrants are receiving letters notifying them that their requests for deferment have been denied, and that they have 33 days to leave the country.

The impact this will have on the health and well-being of children, including a number of Boston Children’s patients and families, is staggering. The care that these children are receiving at Boston Children’s is simply not available in their home countries, placing the lives and safety of these children at risk.

We are deeply concerned by this change in policy regarding the medical deferred action program, which should not be confused with the medical visa program—currently unaffected. We remain hopeful it will be reversed. As this situation unfolds, we will continue to stand by our patients—regardless of where they come from—and do everything in our power to ensure they continue to receive the care they need.

Warmest regards,

So what’s stopping Bennett from re-starting this initiative in the now-Democratic House? The Freedom Caucus - in the Minority - can’t do much if House Dems re-introduce something like the bill he says was killed. Of course, the Senate under Moscow Mitch would kill anything like this (and King Orangeanus would likely veto it as too-few people would die); but at least it would make a good campaign point.

Good question. I don’t know.

From downstairs:

Judges. Appellate judges. Supreme Court justices.

I mean, sure a large blast inside the eye could probably disrupt the low pressure zone pulling air in for a few minutes until the mach stem dissipates, but that’s very temporary. Then as all the atmosphere superheated by the fireball rises it’s going to rapidly pull air back in and reestablish the cyclone even stronger than before.

re: #52 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I can see them surviving but only if they rethink the entire concept of retail electronics sales

From da Wiki:

RadioShack, formerly RadioShack Corporation, is the trade name of an American retailer founded in 1921. Since 2017, General Wireless Operations Inc. has licensed the name from General Wireless IP Holdings LLC, in which Kensington Capital Holdings owns a majority stake.[3] RadioShack operates primarily as an e-commerce website, a network of approximately 500 independently-owned authorized dealer stores, and as a supplier of parts for HobbyTown.

[…]

On May 13, 2015, General Wireless Inc., an affiliate of Standard General, purchased the assets of the company, including the RadioShack brand and related intellectual property assets, for US$26.2 million.[6] General Wireless Operations Inc. was created as an operating entity for the RadioShack store chain, while General Wireless IP Holdings LLC was created as holding company for the newly acquired RadioShack intellectual property assets.

During RadioShack Corporation’s bankruptcy filing in 2015, RadioShack Corporation sold the RadioShack brand rights to different entities around the world. Mexico-based Grupo Gigante, through its subsidiary RadioShack de México, owns the RadioShack brand within Mexico. El Salvador-based Unicomer Group owns the RadioShack brand within the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean. Egypt-based Delta RS for Trading owns the RadioShack brand within North Africa and the Middle East. General Wireless IP Holdings LLC retains rights to the RadioShack brand in all remaining territories, which is mainly in the United States since General Wireless IP Holdings never had the rights to the RadioShack brand in other parts of the world that were previously assigned to InterTAN in 1986, such as Australia. All companies are legally separate and unrelated.

In March 2017, General Wireless Inc., and related subsidiaries, filed for bankruptcy, claiming its Sprint partnership was not as profitable as expected,[7] and announcing plans to close nearly all of their company-owned stores after Memorial Day Weekend of 2017,[8][9] and to shift its business primarily to online.[10]

Just listened to Preet’s podcast with Senator Michael Bennett. Bennett is infuriated by this.

It was blown up by John Tanton’s racist and eugenicist groups such as FAIR and NumbersUSA.

They got conservative voters to lean on people like Rubio with outraged phone calls and visits, to the point where Rubio himself pulled the bill.

re: #25 Anymouse 🌹🎃

This isn’t remotely accurate, to the point of straying into tin foil hat territory. Only about half of Americans own stock. Stock ownership, like all wealth, tends to be disproportionately concentrated in the upper income brackets. Moreover, most people invest in mutual funds, rather than buying single stocks, so the “microsecond access” isn’t really applicable.

Republicans are now perfectly fine with being outed as white supremacist.

The masks have completely fallen away. They have their long-term agenda on full display now out in the open and have their champion in the White House working daily on furthering that agenda.

The strive for Purity is their primary order. Right now this very minute undesirables are now put in concentration camps, gunned down by allied members of the police, promised Pardons by Herr Trump, and now openly targeted by racially targeted propaganda campaign videos.

If Trump wins in 2020, expect the final solution to start being implemented. Did anyone take seriously the predicted worst Trump could inflict in his first 3 years? Now we have the threat of 5 more years with free reign by a neutered Congress and a compliant Supreme Court.

I know enough theology to be a counter-apologist. It doesn’t take a degree in theology (or even a college degree at all).

The Bible makes testable claims about the physical universe. It fails all those tests.

The idea that fundamentalists are somehow “new” is counter-factual. Fundamentalism has always existed in Christianity, and frequently ruled with an iron fist (there’s a reason we call them “the Dark Ages”). The Puritans didn’t come here for religious freedom, they came to set up a theocracy, and killed people for witchcraft because the Bible tells them to do that (and opposed smallpox inoculation because smallpox was “God’s will”).

Fundamentalism was beaten down by the Enlightenment and only seems strange today because it was quiet for a while. It is the norm, not the exception, of Christianity.

Hindu apologists are trying to win Christians with logic/facts when Christianity is nothing more than rebellion against Ganesha, Krishna, and Kali-ma. Muslim apologists are trying to win Christians with logic/facts when Christianity is nothing more than rebellion against Allah.

This tired argument has been used by Christians since the Middle Ages. Somehow though apologists seem to think it’s some new great insight.

It’s all about Israeli election optics.
A public meeting between anyone in the Trump administration and Zarif would be used against Bibi in a big way by his opponents on both the Israeli left AND his vocal critics on the right.
Several thousand times more if the man meeting Zarif was SCROTUS himself.

Boris will deliver the UK right into the hands of the American Republican Party.

Boris’ Brexit will crater the UK Pound greatly damaging the UK’s ability to purchase anything and Britain will save face not by reconciling with the EU but by running into the arms of the USA.

The US Republican’s desire all along has been to dismantle the UK’s social systems with the crown jewel NHS as the ultimate target. They wish to dismantle the NHS and allow US Big Pharma to move in and seize control over the health of an entire commonwealth.

With the NHS being a source of national pride with continued popularity there is no other way to get rid of it other than maliciously cause it to fail by economic means. Once the NHS is no longer financially able to provide health care US Health industries will move in, kicking people out of any health care, greatly raising drug prices, and limiting access to specialists and tests. Get ready UK, you really don’t know what you voted for.

You were conned.

The ‘reasonable’ rebels: Conservatives say we’ve abandoned reason and civility. The Old South used the same language to defend slavery. Eva Fairbanks in WaPo

After the El Paso shooting, Ben Shapiro — a popular conservative podcaster — asked Americans to draw a line between the few conservatives who are white supremacists and those who, like him, aren’t. Almost all Americans are “on the same side,” he said, and “we should be mourning together.” In his telling, we aren’t, for “one simple reason: Too many on the political left [are] castigating the character of those who disagree,” lumping conservatives and political nonconformists together with racists and xenophobes.

That moronic talking point has been going around with conservatives for years.

When we lived in Oklahoma, at the OKC VA hospital my wife said “I need to duck into the chapel for a moment.” Afterwards, she said “okay, I saw what I needed to see.”

When we got home she responded to an E-mail with the subject line:

She tore the wingnut apart and copied everyone on the list of about a dozen people in the E-mail chain. She was quickly taken off the wingnut’s E-mail list.

My Dad retired at 74, then his old employer begged him to come back and fix a problem for them, and he eventually retired for good and all at 78.

Joe would be STARTING THE JOB at 78.

Yes. statesville.com

FILE - In this Feb. 25, 1978 file photo, a Somali Army female recruit checks her automatic weapon at a military training camp in Halane, Mogadishu. At right is her instructor. On Friday, Aug. 23, 2019, The Associated Press reported on this photo circulating online, incorrectly identified as showing U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., undergoing military training. This black-and-white film image was made before Omar was born. (AP Photo)

Hence my comment about her being 65 years old.

Ugh. I can tell you for certain that a number of members of my extended family have decided to delay having children - or not have them altogether - because of the expenses of living and that they feel both spouses need to work in order to pay off student loan debts and afford a house and vehicles that are well-maintained.

Trust me if it was the other way around, if the 11-year-old black girl had slugged the man in the face, she would be in prison between 10 to 20 years.

All flavours of conservatives in that thread justifying slugging an eleven year-old girl.

About the only reason I could see in doing that would be if she was holding a gun or knife on me. Otherwise an eleven year-old is not a threat.

One thing they don’t mention is that, what with climate change and all, is it really such a great time to be adding humans? Fewer humans would burn less fossil fuel, plus fresh water and food may become more limited as weather changes.

When I was a teenager in the 1970s, I read a novel by Daphne DuMaurier called “Rule Britannia.” Basically, the US and the UK join in a union, but then things get weird when the Marines show up. An elderly actress, her granddaughter and a bunch of boys who live in the actress’ house on the southern British coast start raising hell. In the end, the US backs out of the agreement.

Here’s an article from 2016 wondering what DuMaurier got right. Quite a lot, in fact.

I used to really regret that my husband and I had not had children (not for lack of trying). But as I got older, and saw the world beginning to burn, I felt instead great pity for the children being born now (and over the past several decades). They are going to face such a different planet.

Why would you hope for the existence of an entity planning to torture billions of people for eternity?

I have no earthly (or heavenly) idea … but a lot of people seem to revel in the idea I’m going to burn in hell.

There’s also the argument there needs to be some sort of final justice for someone who gets away with a heinous crime (for example, raping a child).

The difference between those positions is the Christian argues that an omnipotent and omnipresent god sees this and says “I’m going to ignore it now, but I’ll get you in the end.”

I would try to stop the crime as it was happening if it was in my power to do so.

I consider mine to be the moral position.

Hué City moored across the river from me a couple years ago. And, our locally based USCG bouy tender always anchors around a mile and a half up river

A fair point, though you really never know. All I know is that despite the fact that both Mrs. Fish and I grew up in an environment that fostered this kind of thinking, if I had made such a proposal to her, I would be without functioning genitals at the current time.

My wife just suggested I call my son and ask if he wants to hide out here.

I imagine he probably wouldn’t. He lives just north of Five Points on the opposite side of Interstate 10.

The last time there was a storm he had slight flooding in the area, but nothing severe. We’ll have to see what Dorian does though.

I don’t know why, but it brings a smile to my face that a government agency has devoted actual effort to considering the consequences of detonating a nuclear bomb inside a hurricane. Then that smile quickly fades when I realize the tangerine wankmaggot lacks enough common sense to even understand that simple line of thought.
