Aug. 23, 2019 | Bob Boilen — Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz made everything seem so easy, pulling a few acoustic instruments out of their car and, in no time, huddling around a single microphone behind the Tiny Desk. With that, Mandolin Orange was ready.

Emily bowed her fiddle while Andrew strummed a guitar and sang about his mom being carried away in a hearse. “Golden Embers” is the lead-off track to Mandolin Orange’s 2019 album Tides of a Teardrop. This song shines a light on the darkness that fell on Andrew’s family when he was 18.

Now ten years into playing together, this couple from Chapel Hill has a family of their own and recently released their sixth album. The two of them sing and play in such complementary ways; it’s heartwarming to watch the ease with which they perform and harmonize. Their second song at the Tiny Desk, “The Wolves,” is a story song that, for me, tells a tale on an older woman’s life, the “hard road” she’s taken and that feeling of wanting to howl at the moon when all is finally right.

There is joy and thoughtfulness in the music of Mandolin Orange. The duo’s set ends on the thoughtful side with “Wildfire,” a fan favorite from their 2016 album Blindfaller. It’s a song with a wish that the Civil War would have left racism to rot on the battlefield, and yet it still rages like “wildfire.” It’s a sobering message presented with a gentle tone, a tone that instilled hope inside of me — hope that we may all learn the lessons of history and rise above them.

SET LIST
“Golden Embers”
“The Wolves”
“Wildfire”

President Andrew Johnson once told a heckler to go fuck himself when the oaf interrupted a speech Johnson was giving in the midwest. The newspapers reported only that Johnson’s language had “lacked dignity and taste,” but several private letters and diaries attest to his real words.

Trump dupes the press about passing gun laws—again
Eric Boehlert 8-21-2019

“…The New York Times actually suggested Trump opted to side with his “populist white and working-class political base,” and do nothing on passing any gun laws. What the Times conveniently omitted was the fact that Trump’s base supports passing new gun laws. We know that because polling confirms over and over that basically everyone in America is in favor of passing new gun laws. It’s truly astonishing how reporters ignore this key fact in order to portray Trump as being super-savvy and doubling down with his supporters.

And that raises the question: Are reporters and editors being duped, or are they willingly playing roles in this national charade, which revolves around the specific topic of guns? But the larger issue remains the media’s senseless normalization of Trump. Indeed, this is one of the inevitable results when newsrooms won’t identify Trump as the compulsive liar that he is: Journalists then have to scramble to concoct reasons for why his policies change. Trump has been lying about his support for gun legislation for years. But because the press won’t state the obvious truth, he gets to do it over and over and journalists play along, pretending that maybe this time things will work out differently.”

During the first modern mass shooting, the Texas Tower sniper incident in 1966, dozens of helpful yokels took their rifles out of their cars and banged away vaguely in the direction of the shooter. This materially hampered the law enforcement and emergency response effort since, for all anyone knew, these characters were either the sniper himself or accomplices. It has never been proven that any casualties resulted from “citizen intervention” but it is a good possibility in several cases. No one, of course, came close to hitting the sniper.

Was the West Texas shooter trying to beat the rush?

West Texas shooting occurred one day before new state laws easing gun restrictions take effect

The shootings in West Texas took place a day before a series of new state laws easing gun restrictions were set to take effect.

The new laws were passed in August and will go into effect Sunday, September 1.

Among the new laws:

House Bill 1143 says a school district cannot prohibit licensed gun owners, including school employees, from storing a firearm or ammunition in a locked vehicle on a school parking lot — provided they are not in plain view.
Senate Bill 535 clarifies the possession of firearms at churches, synagogues or other places of worship. It allows licensed handgun owners to legally carry their weapons in places of worship.
House Bill 1387 loosens restrictions on how many armed school marshals a school district can appoint.
House Bill 302 bans homeowners or landlords of rental property from prohibiting residents from lawfully possessing, carrying, transporting or storing a firearm or ammunition on the property.
House Bill 1177 prohibits residents from being charged with a crime for carrying a handgun while evacuating from a state or local disaster area.
House Bill 2363 allows some foster homes to store firearms and ammunition in a safe, locked and secure place for personal protection.

Hi.

Another day, another mass murder. Unless the GOP (and especially Mitch McConnell) is pried out of the Senate, any sort of gun legislation will die. When a classroom of first graders were murdered and all the right wing could come up with was “false flag” or “they’re trying to take our guns” or “they’re politicising a tragedy” it became obvious they would do nothing.

In the meantime, Hurricane Dorian is visible on the Met Office radar from The Bahamas. The storm is very impressive on radar. (About two-thirds down the page.)

Not all cops are trained for this. That’s why cops call in SWAT/ESU units that have special weapons and tactics to deal with active shooter situations.

In NYC, if you’ve got a problem, you call the cops. When the cops have a problem, they call ESU.

Cops don’t all get the training, let alone the tactical know how and weapons to deal with active shooter situations. It’s why when you see active shooter situations, you see the street cops give way to heavily armed special units. It’s as much for the cops’ safety as anything.

ESU/SWAT train nonstop for active shooter situations. Regular cops don’t.

Non cops? They don’t have the skills to deal with an active shooter situation, and simply having a gun doesn’t deter, let alone stop active shooter situations.

Tomi Lahren Admits That Her Very Patriotic Leggings Were Made In China (Robyn Pennacchia at Wonkette)

The lede:

WELL HELLO.

As you may recall, last week, Tomi Lahren debuted her new line of “athleisure wear,” which she assured us were way more American and patriotic than all of the other commie athleisure brands out there. As you may also recall, just a few hours after Wonkette published my little article on Tomi’s latest venture, I discovered that this very patriotic line of $80 yoga pants for women who don’t hate America was, in fact, made in China.

More to the point it wasn’t an “impossible situation”.

In fact, it was only possible be cause the shooter had high capacity magazines.

Look, there are over 10,000,000 Rambo guns out there, costing around $1,000 each. A buy back would cost $10 billion dollars and that will never happen.

Just require all guns to be registered that have the capacity to hold more than eight bullets and limit clips/magazines to eight bullets (pistols and rifles) for private possession with a ten year mandatory sentence in the Federal gray bar motel.

If you want to get your jollies off, you can go to a licensed gun range and rent a high-cap magazine and do so, just like how people with automatic guns have to do now (bringing their magazines and ammo with them).

Like my Marine daddy taught me, if you can’t hit your target with six shots, you don’t need to own a gun.

I grew up with long rifles and shotguns. The long rifles held 4 or 5 rounds, the shotguns 5 or 6. I have hunted deer, elk, pheasant, dove, duck, geese, and grouse. It was meat hunting. I never, ever, emptied a gun while hunting. Take a shot, replace the round.

When hunting deer and elk, if you missed the animal with the first shot, you rarely got a second. Birds (shotguns) often resulted in the following conversation:

What did you shoot?

About two boxes.

What did you take home?

Two boxes of empty shells.

Now, I was a pretty good wing shooter. Dove, ducks, and geese were easy for freezer meat. Grouse, and especially quail were my nemesis.

Oh, and I don’t hunt any more . I just got to the point where it lost its glamor for me.

I’ve still got an old 12-gauge pump shotgun and an old but very accurate Moissant-Nagant in a gun safe, but unless things get really pear-shaped, that is where they will stay.

But if those idiots don’t think liberals can defend themselves, I’ve got a little surprise for them. That Russian Rifle can put a bullet into a 4-inch circle at two hundred yard over open sites.

The whole concept that you need a semi-automatic rifle for home protection is the single biggest lie ever perpetrated on the American public. What you need is a pump shotgun. The sound alone of you loading a round is enough to make intruders run. Shooting off multiple rounds travelling at 3,000 ft per second will not only penetrate the walls of your house, but your next door neighbors house. A low velocity round of two-shot will rid your house of human vermin quite quickly and keep you neighbors safe.

The New York Times analysed the NRA’s “A” ratings (and other ratings) of Democratic representatives and senators over the past ten years.

The number of “A” ratings has steadily declined, until their last round they only rated three Democrats with “A.”

They rate almost the entire Democratic US House with an “F.” Good, since the Democrats control the House.

Not only that, the NRA is also downgrading some Republicans to “F.”

The NRA noted that while Barack Obama was President, they could count on “A” rated Democrats to prevent any meaningful gun safety control legislation from getting through. They can no longer count on that anymore.

Of the 25 lawmakers who dropped three or more letter grades, only two — Senator Joe Donnelly, Democrat of Indiana, and Representative Carlos Curbelo, Republican of Florida — lost re-election, and Mr. Curbelo lost to a Democrat who also had an F rating. He faced no serious opposition in the Republican primary.

In fact, of the 83 members of Congress downgraded by any amount between 2008 and 2018, only 11 lost re-election. By contrast, 14 of the 31 members who were upgraded lost.

Since I keep a finger on the pulse of the adult entertainment industry, this was good to see.

An adult film company acquired a Website named PornWikiLeaks and shut it down today. The site’s purpose was to expose the names and addresses of everyone who works in adult films or erotic Romance novels, including family members (regardless of age), telephone numbers, real names, E-mail, you name it.

[That Website is similar to KeyWiki dot org, a Website dedicated to “exposing” members of the Democratic Socialists of America along with their families including children, so wingnuts can harass and threaten them.]

Behind the hide bar due to discussion of adult stuff.

Bang Bros Acquires PornWikiLeaks, Destroys Site Data (Goes to Xbiz, caution for adult-themed advertising on the site)

LOS ANGELES — BangBros has reportedly acquired pornwikileaks.com and incinerated what it claims are the hard drives containing all the website’s data.

PornWikiLeaks surfaced in 2010-11 publishing performer data that included real names and other personal details. The site reportedly built its database from a security breach at Adult Industry Medical, the talent testing facility that preceded Free Speech Coalition’s current PASS system.

(BangBros is an adult film production company)

They bought the Website, then replaced the Website with a statement saying they destroyed all the data from the site, including hundreds of thousands of comments including hatred and threats. The Website will now only contain the statement the production company made about protecting actors and their families including their children.

I know I’ve posted this several times, but it’s time for the periodic repeat.

In the 1950’s and 1960’s,, about 50,000 Americans every year died in car wrecks. Automobiles every single year killed more Americans than were KIA in the entire all-the-years of the Vietnam War.

So Congress appropriated money for research. The findings of that research resulted in seat belt laws, air bags, new materials for windshields and gas tanks, stricter drunk driving limits, guardrails and speed bumps and stoplights at selected locations.

It’s only about 30,000 a year now, in a country whose population is 50% larger and people commuting much further to work. It didn’t totally eliminate all automobile deaths; but the per capita per miles driven casualty rate is down by 80%. More than a million lives saved. All without infringing on any law-abiding citizens’ rights of free movement.

We can all think of a few obvious ways to reduce the frequency of gun deaths, and CDC research could probably come up with a bunch more good ideas for new regulations. There’s no reason such proposed regulations would infringe on any law-abiding responsible person’s 2nd Amendment rights.

The protesters are gonna push it too far, and Beijing is gonna come down on them like a ton of bricks. It’s only a matter of time.

The most likely outcome is we’ll probably see a mass exodus out of Hong Kong to places like Australia, New Zealand, Canada (B.C. in particular), maybe to the UK once Brexit settles down, and of course, the United States. And that mass exodus would be a win-win for Beijing…..as they’ll quickly bring in mainlanders to fill the empty spaces.

Not joking when I say the internet let all the psychopaths and narcissists network up.

Yup. It’s a Mimeograph machine on steroids.

There is a wingnut Nazi (really, he has Nazi flags on the gate of his ranch) here who mails out to everyone in the Panhandle a newspaper he has printed somewhere.

It is fortunate that there is little Internet penetration in this area.

We had a problem here a few months ago when a worker in the state capitol unwrapped some pipes for maintenance and found they were cast with swastikas.

That turned into a big debate on whether a whole bunch of the plumbing should be ripped out at great expense because of the association of that symbol with the NSDAP.

The plumbing in question was installed long before the Nazi Party arose in Germany, the plumbing itself is out-of-view of the public, and it was decided not to spend millions of dollars on a project to rip it out.

Over in Scottsbluff, a number of businesses have tiny tile mosaics for the entrances of their businesses, many of which incorporate swastikas. They were put in prior to the rise of the Third Reich, and hold the original meaning of fortune or good luck.

keyt.com

In the meantime, a Nazi flag was found flying in a public park in Wyoming a couple weeks ago.

cnn.com

The flag of Nazi Germany was sighted atop a flagpole in a public park in Laramie, Wyoming.

The US flag that usually flies from the pole lay crumpled on the ground when police arrived on the scene Monday morning, according to Lieutenant Gwen Smith of the Laramie Police Department.

Shortly after police were notified of the incident, officers promptly removed the Nazi flag, which bore the swastika symbol. Upon retrieving the discarded American flag, the officers folded it properly and one saluted the flag as the other returned it to its rightful place atop the flagpole, Smith said.

The GOP continues to be surprised (Narrator: they’re not) that they have Nazis in their midst.

Our own state governor had one on his staff.

Bennett Bressman; Nebraska Governor’s Field Director (goes to Anti-Fascist Action Nebraska)

Bennett Bressman likes to “name the Jew” in white nationalist chatrooms. That’s a problem for Nebraska’s Jewish population because he’s the Statewide Field Director for Nebraska’s billionaire governor Pete Ricketts. Bressman, a UNL student, leads a team of twenty-four interns operating Rickett’s phone banking, neighborhood canvassing, answering constituent questions, yard sign supply-chain management and the distribution of campaign literature.

He claimed he only made his Internet posts on his own time, but his own Twitter account and such refute that. Gov. Ricketts says he left after he was exposed by Unicorn Riot, but he still has been seen working with the governor and other Republicans.

Can we call the GOP Nazis yet?

A former Mormon (now atheist) who goes by the name Jesus Christ on YouTube is being sued by his ex-wife to end joint custody of their children.

When he received a witness list of people who will testify against him in the custody case, it includes friends and his own family. They are arguing as an atheist he should not be around children.

This is strikingly similar to my own ex-wife, who used the same tactics as a Presbyterian to remove my visitation rights from my son. The court in Florida ruled in her favour: as an atheist I would be a bad influence on my son. (That has irreparably damaged my relationship with my son. She also made the argument in court since I have epilepsy, that was proof of demon possession, and the court accepted that argument.)

Yeah, but Beijing’s problem is that the multinationals leave. The whole point to “one country two systems” is that Hong Kong isn’t just Shanghai South: the international community could count on doing business without authoritarian government interference. It’s a goose that lays golden eggs for the mainland. Once they kill off any sort of independent government, there’s no point for any company to have separate operations there and in Shanghai, so they pack up with all their staffs, and anyone who can get out does. Then, sure, you can get mainlanders to move there, but to do what?

Also, you’re probably looking at Taiwanese official independence. Once it’s clear to everyone that one country two systems is dead because Xi can’t tolerate any sort of dissent, the polite fiction with Taiwan has no point. And then possibly war.

In the meantime, a Nazi flag was found flying in a public park in Wyoming a couple weeks ago.

NHC Update:

nhc.noaa.gov

The eyewall of catastrophic Hurricane Dorian is currently reaching
the Abaco Islands. This is a life-threatening situation. Residents
there should take immediate shelter. Do not venture into the eye if
it passes over your location.

Hazards:
- Wind Gusts over 200 mph
- Storm Surge 15 to 20 feet above normal tide levels with higher
destructive waves

Isn’t that the highest elevation on some of those islands? A few of the islands have hills or limestone rock formations with elevations as high as 150 feet, but that’s not where the buildings are.

When it’s passed, the place is going to look like Bikini Atoll.

They’re fucked-er than Puerto Rico.

Beijing seems to be running out of patience.

Communist Party mouthpiece Xinhua on Sunday condemned the increasingly violent anti-government protests in Hong Kong, warning that “the end is coming for those attempting to disrupt Hong Kong and antagonise China”.

The news agency’s commentary did not threaten specific action to end the protests, other than repeating unwavering support for the Hong Kong government and police actions to end them.

But the commentary - the latest in a series of strongly worded statements from Beijing - did lay out three bottom lines “that must not be crossed”.

“No one should harm [China’s] national sovereignty and security; no one should challenge the power of the central authorities and the authority of the Basic Law of the HKSAR; no one should use Hong Kong to infiltrate and undermine the mainland,” it said, referring to the city’s formal title of Special Administrative Region.

I’ve been making an effort to buy local and only use Amazon if I can’t find it nearby. Luckily I live in a large metro where it’s not hard to find stuff. I try to use Amazon’s ‘Locker’ delivery service so that their drivers don’t have to come to my house and leave stuff on the porch.

I always use free (non-Prime) delivery because I’m cheap and can wait, but I wouldn’t doubt that Amazon just sits on my order and then makes their employees rush-deliver it when it comes to the top of the list.

I like that Jeff Bezos is mostly a passive owner of the Washington Post, but the way he runs Amazon puts him very close to the top on the “Eat the rich” list. Jack and Mark Z are still above him.

I remember in the mid/late 90s when I was delivering pizzas the rule was very clear you could not say “or less” when giving a time estimate. Two reasons: one, there was a liability issue (I think California even passed a law saying you couldn’t do that); and two, it implied a guarantee. We had to give an estimate “thirty to forty minutes.”

This is by no means a comprehensive list of Trump’s erratic and unpresidential behavior recently, but it gives you the flavor of a presidency whose defining features are crassness, cruelty, incompetence and — most of all — sheer craziness. I may not agree with Warren or Sanders on most issues, but I am confident they would not do any of the offensive and even impeachable acts that Trump commits with mind-numbing regularity. That is reason enough to vote for them, even if I would prefer a more moderate alternative. Saving U.S. democracy from a mad king matters more than the specific policies of his successor.

Unfortunately that kind of buyback will go nowhere and even if passed, many gun nuts already have plans to “lose” their weapons.

No, they need to be regulated not banned just like machine guns were in the NFA using that same law. Make every semi-automatic rifle with a removable magazine or holds more than 10 rounds covered by the NFA just like full auto weapons. The next time they are transfered - sales used or new, gift, inheritance - they are registered and a tax stamp is purchase. The cost of the stamp needs to be increased to ~$1000 and then indexed to inflation as well. This will regulated them in a way that is already settled law and more gun owners will comply than not. Save the hammer for the bad apples who refuse to register just as they have done with illegal fully automatic weapons for 80 years.

Oh, it definitely borrows from The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver. Martin Scorsese is a producer on Joker - according to one joke, it was so he wouldn’t sue for plagiarism.

Nonetheless, Joaquin Phoenix is a solid actor, so I’m interested to see his interpretation of the role. Can’t be any worse than the Joker we saw in Suicide Squad (though in some fairness to Jared Leto, the idea of a hedonistic/rock star/gangsta Joker is genuinely original, but it needs the right story and the right director).

No. The word ban is a loser. We never banned Machine guns. They are, instead, tightly regulated and almost never are used in crime. That’s what needs to happen with semi-auto rifles.

Yep, move them to category 3, licensing with a hefty fee , registration, law enforcement approval. The NRA hates Cat 3 as a successful example of regulation.

Hell, as far as I’m concerned we can start with Universal Background Checks and stricter safety training requirements and go from there.

I’ve been picking up the land line phone today because I’m waiting for a call with info about a deceased friend’s memorial. Just got a call from a guy who identified himself as a republican pollster who asked “Do you think President (sic) Trump is doing a better job than President Obama?” My answer was that “Trump should be impeached immediately”. It’s such a stupid question that I’m wondering if the call was a set-up for some other scam.

It’s actually a pretty striking fact that no recent mass shooter has used an actual machine gun, considering that there are many thousands of them in civilian hands. They are not rare but the supply is limited to what was on hand in 1986 so they are quite expensive. It would seem that the evil shits who do this either don’t have that kind of money or can’t pass a serious background check or both.

That’s exactly why I say to just add semi-autos with removable magazines to the NFA list. There was much gnashing of teeth and wailing then but since it wasn’t a real ban - anyone with the money and clean background can own one - it’s always been upheld as a reasonable restriction. Even Scalia couldn’t fault the NFA.

On top of the money a lot of it is probably just because these are mostly impulsive acts. Last I heard it takes about 9 months to process an NFA application and get the approved paperwork with tax stamp. That’s no good if you’re an asshole with obsessive homicidal ideations right now.

Machine guns are also designed for suppressing fire, so they’d just waste ammo.

re: #233 William Lewis

We can ban them. We can offer a buyback and then make it illegal to own one.

And we could get away with it because there were few left and they were expensive. We also banned civilian manufacturing.

One of my sisters lives in Ormond Beach and my father lived in Barefoot Bay before he died, plus MrBWS’s sister lives in South Carolina, and my mom, another sister, and brother live in North Carolina, so this is all kinda personal.
