Hurricane Dorian Now One of the Strongest Storms Ever Recorded

Environment • Views: 31,821

I strongly urge any LGF readers in the path of this monster storm to take all measures needed to be safe, up to and including evacuation. Hurricane Dorian is now one of the strongest storms ever recorded, with wind gusts up to 220 mph.

This is a very bad time to have a president and a political party that refuses to accept the reality of climate change.

Hoping that Dorian turns Mar a Lago into a pile of toothpicks. If it could also do the same to Rush Limbaugh’s gauche residence, that would be a bonus.

Someone asked earlier if there will ever be a Category 6 level on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

The answer is: probably not.

It’s been proposed a number of times in the past but the reality is only a small number of Hurricanes ever reach Category 5 and of those even fewer become strong enough to approach a level that would be a realistic threshold for a Category 6.

One analysis I read said that only seven of the hurricanes ever recorded would be reclassified as a Category 6 if the new level was officially added.

Storms just don’t get that powerful…yet. Who knows how things will be 10, 20 years from now and beyond.

Home Office planning to end family reunion for children after Brexit

The Home Office is preparing to end the current system of family reunification for asylum-seeking children if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, the Guardian has learned.

The government has privately briefed the UN refugee agency UNHCR and other NGOs that open cases may be able to progress, but a no-deal Brexit would mean no new applications after 1 November from asylum-seeking children to be reunited with relatives living in the UK. Even if there is a deal, the future of family reunion is not certain.

Lawyers and campaigners say they will be trying to get through as many claims as possible in the next two months, warning that the impact on migrant children stranded alone in countries such as Greece and Italy could be “fatal” as more head for the Channel to try to cross to the UK irregularly.

A spokesman for the UNHCR said: “[We understand] that if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, the Dublin Regulation, which allows for the transfer of asylum-seeking children and adults within the EU to join family members, will no longer apply to the UK.

“UNHCR urges the UK government and its European partners to work together to ensure that appropriate arrangements remain in place for asylum seekers, refugees and stateless people.”

Glad to know we aren’t the only buffoonish shitshow in the anglosphere, in a bile sort of way.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that due to friction and some other forces, the earth can’t actually sustain a category 6 storm. various forces simply contain the maximum speed that winds can move at.

Guns blazing, dead civilians, injured children… these things are normal in a war zone.

A long time ago as the NRA grew more and more powerful and gun laws started being overturned, along with a right wing lurch by the SCOTUS it was warned that as more combat-designed guns streamed off the assembly lines that it would turn the USA into a war zone. On the other side of the argument, the 2nd Amendment brigade theory was more guns = more safety.

Well, here we are. More guns than ever, and the average person feels less safe. Welcome to the American Warzone 2019.

According to a number of recent studies, while human hunting and habitat loss certainly contributed to the demise of the passenger pigeon, the idea that the most populous bird in North America crashing from billions to zero in fifty years likely had combined causes.

As such, genetic researchers dove in, and discovered that the pigeon was surprisingly non-diverse for a species with so many members. When a new predator (Europeans) were introduced into their environment, they could not adapt.

It wasn’t hobby hunting which wiped out the pigeon. It was massive amounts of hunting (including things like throwing nets around colonies to capture thousands of birds at a time).

The pigeon was hunted primarily for meat for the poor in places like New York City.

en.wikipedia.org

Barrels of pigeons would sell for fifty cents.

It wasn’t hunting per se which killed them. It was capitalism.

re: #152 Backwoods_Sleuth

and how much impact would massive over-hunting have on limiting genetic diversity?

Let’s ask the white rhinos about that.

According to the 2014 and 2017 studies, genetic diversity was already limited.

The birds were hunted by natives long before Europe colonised North America. Previous genetic bottlenecks (such as the last ice age) were overcome by its massive population and long periods of time.

The introduction of mass hunting meant the bird could not adapt fast enough to a new predator.

A similar problem exists with Atlantic cod in the Grand Banks, and though fishing cod was prohibited fifteen years ago, some scientists think that species will be extinct by 2030.

The Wikipedia article also notes how the pigeon altered the landscape of hardwood trees (by preferring certain seeds over others), and the bird’s elimination may have contributed to the rise of Lyme Disease (since the bird’s niche was overtaken by mice, since they no longer had competitors for the same seeds).

It’s coming.

There ain’t a lot to do in Odessa, if you ban video games then the only other thing to do is go out to the middle of nowhere (2 miles from anywhere there) and shoot guns.

If west Texas is still like it was when I was a kid, then the only thing left to do is sex, which is why Abilene had one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates back in the 80s.

Okay, for scientists, they’re surprisingly non-rigorous. We did not commit “mass murder” on the passenger pigeon. We killed tons of them, but murder is a silly word to use there.

passenger pigeons should have taken lessons from those damned starlings that aren’t native to this continent or even this hemisphere.
60 released in Central Park in 1890 and another 40 released the next year.
Now 200 million and no end in sight.

Interesting. In the same amount of time it took for the pigeon to go extinct, a fish in Alaska, trapped by an earthquake, evolved from a saltwater to a freshwater fish: sciencedaily.com.

The Medium article does have one bit that I approve of — they included a picture of the diorama in the Denver Museum of Nature and Science that features passenger pigeons. (And if I may get in a plug for one of my favorite places, that is only one of two floors’ worth of fantastic old dioramas that they have preserved. Worth visiting if one is in Denver for any reason.)

That is and always has been just an excuse. The reality is that the NRA has successfully spent decades convincing them that any measure of government involvement in the sale and transfer of firearms is the “camel’s nose,” that the next step will be the BATF showing up at their doorstep with a list of the guns they own and the muscle to take it all away. And to insecure white men, the idea that somebody (particularly the Feds) will show up one day and take “their stuff” scares the everloving crap out of them.

That’s what the whole “our way of life” shit about slavery really was in the end, the idea that the abolitionists would come in and take “property” away from the “rightful owners.”

I remember Crispy Critters and Linus the Lion (Voiced by Sheldon Leonard). They had a Linus & Friends Saturday Morning cartoon show in the late 60s until the FCC ordered off the air because they ruled it was a 30 minute commercial.
