On CNN it was reported that a neighbor complained that he (Odessa shooter) had threatened to shoot her over putting trash in a dumpster (no more details on that) and that he was shooting into his backyard from his roof. She reported this to the police, but they failed to show up, claiming they didn’t have the location on GPS.

So, what caused the storm to bomb out and turn into a cat 5 monster? Short answer:

High water temps. Higher water temps give storms more energy.

If Dorian stays over the same area, it churns up colder water, which can weaken it some. Of course, that’s exactly what happened in the Bahamas since the storm is sitting pretty much over the country for nearly 24 hours.

It’s inching closer to the US, and any wobble in the track can take it onshore - a cat 4/5 landfall. Models expect it to remain cat 5 overnight.

Southeastern US remains under state of emergency because of potential catastrophic damage from storm surge and prolonged duration.

That theory did not work out. And American Elm trees are now far less common.

After my father fell 75’ through a tree and somehow landed unhurt at the base of one tree, he decided that the job was not for him. That was one of a number of jobs he tried before he finally settled on what he wanted to do. He went on to get his PhD and become a professor instead.

My wife explained to me why she hired the tree surgeon from Bayard.

She originally spoke to a person here in town, and he came and looked at our elm tree. He said he couldn’t do the job, and recommended the man in Bayard because he has a degree in arboriculture. He noted if there was any person in this part of the state who could save our tree, it would be him.

Wow, 75’ fall and unhurt. That would convince me the job wasn’t for me either.

I’m not sure what variety of elm it is. Looking at Wikipedia, the picture of an American Elm is pretty similar to our tree (except ours is actually two trees grown together, and the dying part is one of the trees).

I imagine our tree was spared from Dutch Elm disease because there are no trees at all outside of town, and as far as I can tell no other elm trees in town.

The storm has moved almost entirely off the south coast of Grand Bahama, according to the Bahamas Met Office. The eye is also getting smaller in the latter radar scans, and the northern part of the eyewall is raking the northern coastline of the island.

The western eyewall is still several hours away from Freeport at the current speed.

When Katrina got into the eastern Gulf of Mexico and blew up to a Cat 5 storm, it got really, really big. It was was carrying a huge amount of water at its periphery. By the time time it hit the Mississippi Delta, it was going through an eye replacement cycle and was down to a Cat 4. By the time it got to NO, it had Cat 3 winds, but the inertia of the previous strength of the storm meant that it still had a Cat 5 storm surge, around 20’ of water.

That was what devestated the Mississippi and Louisiana coasts and inundated New Orleans.

I was on a strike team two days after landfall. We got into the city through Airport Highway, from the west on a natural levee and blew right through town and crossed the bridge into the lower Mississippi delta no probs, once we got past the cops. (Don’t ask.) We got to Buras and there were two shrimp boats on the roof of the high school. We got to Sulphur and there was almost nothing left except for the remains of the hot water extraction factory that recovered elemental sulphur from the salt dome immediately under the town. We couldn’t get much farther south because there was too much crap on the road. Everything was covered with crude.

This storm is a monster. Normally, a hurricane above a Cat 3 goes through an eyewall replacement cycle every eighteen hours or so. You will note that the NHC is gobsmacked (quietly) that Dorian hasn’t done so. We may be seeing a new type of hurricane, powered by global warming, which will break new ground.

People who live in the warned areas of Hurricane Dorian (and the tropical storm warned areas around Gainesville and Ocala) should designate someone outside the warned area to be the contact point for information from family and friends. If it is in fact an American elm, we will contact the scientific organisations trying to identify elm varieties which are resistant to Dutch Elm disease and see if they are interested in either coming out to investigate our tree, or get a shipment of a huge box of seeds next Spring.

It could be like the elm trees in Central Park; spared because it is miles from any other elm tree. (Central Park’s elm trees are protected by miles of city in every direction.)

I was working as a contractor at FEMA during that period.

Under Clinton FEMA had been a cabinet level agency. The philosophy of the incoming Bush administration appeared to be that emergency management was not the role of the Federal government.

Under Bush, funds were cut and there was an attempt to dismember the agency. Parts were defunded and and the rest was supposed to be farmed out to other agencies. Needless to say, just about anybody who could get out, did. The survivors were kind of demoralized. And then the former commissioner of the International Arabian Horse Association was installed as its head.

The folks who were still there at the time of Katrina were working very hard, but were inexperienced, poorly led and badly supported by the administration.

After the hurricane, most of the regular FEMA staff did months-long tours of Louisiana in fairly primitive conditions. I heard quite a few stories of them getting death threats and being shot at.

Fortunately no one I knew of was actually shot. I suspect that the poor hurricane survivors desperately needed the help and while they registered their outrage, they did not want to drive away the assistance.

By the way, Michael “Heckuva Job Brownie” Brown is reportedly running an AM radio show in Denver these days.

I seem to remember that as the 2008 recession deepened, a lot of producers of beef, chicken and pork reduced their ‘herds/stocks/flocks’. For several months there was a lot of much cheaper than usual meat in the supermarket.

I am watching to see if that is going to happen this time.

Which is rather the point, that the morons who think that “AR stands for Armalite Rifle” makes a convincing argument because it makes them look “educated” about firearms are the same ones who think heavy snow means that the climate isn’t changing. Or even think that “climate change” means that the weather changed due to the seasons.

The long and short of it was the AR-15 (and it’s big brother AR-10) were designed by Eugene Stoner and marketed to the US Army as military weapons. Not hunting rifles, or plinking rifles, or “home defense rifles.” All that shit came up when Colt’s patents expired in ‘77 and other companies started selling their own clones on the civilian market. It’s about as “useful” to the discussion of what “AR” means as whining that it can’t be called an assault rifle because of the strict definition that says that it must have selective fire.

If we just start calling them “x” can we regulate them then?

- a week ago it was heading direct for us. we’re 15 miles inland from dania beach
- then the models had it crossing over orlando
- then they moved to the more or less current bouncing up the coast but no landfall of the eye

- we are now officially just south and outside the cone, by a hairs breadth
- there is still a tropical storm watch at dania beach

- we’re expecting some 10-20 mph wind over the next 2 days maybe gusting into the 40’s. and maybe an inch of rain.

The AR in AR-15 really does stand for ARmalite Rifle, just as it does in the designation of my Henry “US Survival” AR-7. The latter is a .22 LR breakdown rifle that was designed for aircrews to carry with their emergency gear. It was also an Armalite product and in fact was also designed by Eugene Stoner but it’s not an assault weapon by any stretch of the imagination.
The fact remains though that Stoner and Armalite never intended the AR-15 to be anything but a military weapon, based on the assault rifle principles established earlier by the Stg-44 and the AK-47. Another widely prevalent myth is that “AR-15” refers to the semi-auto civilian version while select-fire military versions are M-16s. In fact AR-15 is a commercial designation, originally a trademark, while M-16 is a military designation applied to the AR-15 when it was standardized for military issue in 1965. Before that, the US and several other countries had purchased thousands of select fire AR-15s on commercial contracts. IIRC, it was first taken into action by the British SAS in Borneo in 1962. My father had a select-fire AR-15 while he was in Vietnam in 1964. Robin Moore’s novel The Green Berets, written in 1964 and set in the spring of that year, mentions the AR-15 pretty extensively, describing its effects in graphic, and wholly accurate, terms. Finally, the rifle I used in basic training in 1970 was stamped “AR-15.” It was otherwise identical to the M-16s the rest of the company had. The armorer explained that it was just one of the ones purchased before the adoption of the M-16 designation and that he had seen quite a few of them over the years.

To summarize, “AR-15” does not stand for “assault rifle” but it damn well is an assault rifle by any relevant definition and by the intent of the designer.

There are a couple LGFers along the Florida coast who might be in the direct path if it wobbles over the coast.

I have a friend who lives in Savannah, GA and she’s really sweating this out. She broke both of her legs in a fall down a set of stairs in early July, so she’s barely hobbling around. She’s already in a great deal of pain from the breaks healing, experiencing a lot of stress from not working, and her narcissistic mother is giving her a lot of grief about not leaving with her. Her latest plan is that if her downstairs neighbor leaves, she’ll go with the neighbor, take a very few things and her ferrets. She just wishes Dorian would move.

A Trump supporter on my timeline shared a post lamenting that they’re aren’t any newscasters like Walter Cronkite anymore, who just reported the news and let the viewer make up their mind.

I pointed out that this is kind of disingenuous, in that one of his most famous on-air moments was criticizing US involvement in Vietnam, and heavily influencing public opinion against it.

She went full snowflake, offering to take down the page since she didn’t want to offend anyone. I asked who was being offended, and then wondered out loud how many of the original commenters bemoaning the lack of a Cronkite broadcasters were Fox News diehards. I described that scenario as entertaining and pure comedy.

Guess what FB post doesn’t exist anymore.

Not the best use of my time, but fuck it; this woman is a Trump supporter and birther. I keep her around just to see how the mouth breathers think.

(Probably starvation. In Iceland, I had the opportunity to taste their fermented shark “delicacy.” It drove home just how close to the edge Icelanders lived in past centuries. Fortunately, they also provided adult beverages to get the rotting gasoline taste out of your mouth.)

At 3:15 a.m., the U.S. Coast Guard and Ventura County Fire Department crews rushed to a mayday call that the “Conception,” a 75-foot-long charter dive boat carrying 39 people, was ablaze 20 yards off Platts Harbor on the north side of Santa Cruz Island, which is located about 30 miles west of the city of Ventura.

All five crew members aboard were rescued by a passing good Samaritan boat called the “Grape Escape,” while 34 passengers remain unaccounted for. The crew members jumped off the burning boat, Coast Guard Capt. Monica Rochester told reporters at a news briefing from Channel Islands Harbor.

“The crew was actually already awake and on the bridge and they jumped off,” Rochester said.

The passengers were all below deck at the time.

Wind gusts up to 50 mph are possible with this band.

the storms are being reported from much further away than usual because they’re moving at 45-50 miles per hour towards us (the whip effect)

So will having E15 on the market year round benefit Nebraska farmers and the economy? Maybe only slightly, and definitely not immediately.

Less than 70 stations in Nebraska carry E15, and it isn’t sold at all in 20 states - although availability is growing quickly.

But many hope the small change making E15 more accessible will make Americans more aware of their options.

Most states don’t sell E-15 gas. Only a few stations in Nebraska do.

The article at Nebraska Educational Television (text article) includes an interview from the owners of the ethanol plant in our county seat, along with photographs of the process to create ethanol from corn.

They’re engaging reads, and the books get progressively more difficult as you move into the series (being age appropriate as the subject matter gets progressively darker too).

Our rescue dog on walks reacts to other dogs, so when a neighbor’s little dog ran out of her house and charged right up at my dog (on a leash) I was terrified what would happen. She did exactly this. Just sent a message. The little dog quickly turned around and ran back home in a bit of fear but with no wounds.

Unbelievable:

The forward super-structure, two decks high, was completely gone, with very heavy damage to the hull just below it. This does look like a massive explosion forward. One guess is that a small fuel fire broke out in the engine room aft and the crew was back there trying to put it out. Fuel leaked forward, ignited, and and breached an oxygen or air tank, setting off a chain reaction explosion in the rest of the air tanks forward where the passengers were. They will have expert divers combing every foot of the wreck for remains but I don’t think there will be much to recover.
I can’t think of anything worse for a captain than to lose ALL of his passengers while he survives.

The US Coast Guard is sending helicopters to The Bahamas to assist in rescues.

CLEARWATER, Fla. (FOX 13) - Coast Guard crews from the Bay Area are getting ready for rescue missions in one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Dorian.

Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater is deploying personnel and aircraft to Andros Island, where they’ll be staging for post-storm response in the Bahamas. The teams include MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters and their crews, along with health service technicians.

Prime Minister: This Is the Worst Day of My Life (goes to the Nassau, Bahamas Guardian)

As Abaco continued to be pounded by Hurricane Dorian, a catastrophic category 5 storm, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis cried as he described today as the “worst day of his life” and expressed hope that those who refused to evacuate will survive the storm.

“This is probably the most sad and worst day of my life to address the Bahamian people,” he said during a press conference at the headquarters of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

“As a physician I’ve been trained to withstand many things, but never anything like this.

“We’re facing a hurricane… one that we’ve never seen in the history of The Bahamas, with wind velocity as high as 180 mph, with gusts in excess of 200 mph.”

He noted that Bahamian homes are built to withstand winds of up to 150 mph.

“So this will put us through a test that we’ve never confronted before,” he continued, adding that storm surges are projected to be as high as 20 feet.
