So I was thinking about mass shootings earlier.

Specifically the oft-used anti-Gun Control argument that “Bad guys are still going to get get guns no matter what.”

I think on one level the statment is accurate. Obviously, if a person is 100% determined to get ahold of a weapon and shoot people NO MATTER WHAT, they are going to find a way to succeed at doing so.

Here’s the problem though: Real Life isn’t always so black and white.

Consider this scenario: A guy has no criminal record but has been going through a bit of a rough patch. Close friend died not too long ago, separated from an ex-wife and single at the moment. Struggling to pay his bills.

Now imagine this same guy goes in to work tomorrow morning only to be told he is being let go and to pack up his things and leave the premises.

Currently, it would be VERY EASY for this person, after he gathered his things up and left his workplace, to drive to the nearest gun store, purchase a small arsenal and return to either his workplace or go somewhere else and take out his frustrations on whomever happened to be convenient at the time.

But what if it WASN’T very easy to drive to the nearest gun store and purchase a small arsenal. What if there were more barriers in place?

The guy STILL might be determined enough to try and get a gun some way, but there are good odds he might deem getting a gun too difficult or inconvenient and find some other way to deal with his frustration that DOESN’T involve shooting his office up or killing innocent people.

Living in Canada, I never felt “vulnerable” because I didn’t have a gun but the bad guys still might. Also bear in mind most mass shootings are committed by people who were NOT violent criminals PRIOR to the shooting. It’s not gangbangers and drug dealers shooting up Night Clubs and Garlic Festivals, it’s young white guys who are angry about the world and easily able to procure military style weapons and high capacity magazines to let their anger be known in a very public way. When I was bullied in school, I at one point got angry enough I probably could have talked myself into committing a violent act if I had easy access to weaponry. Of course, I didn’t have such access and so nothing ever happened.

I do NOT advocate for banning all guns. I enjoy target shooting myself from time to time. But I do believe we should at least make it a lot harder to purchase weapons like an AR-15 if an outright ban is unrealistic.

I just get so angry that we can’t even get something as logical as Universal Background Checks passed.

Again, a reminder: After a mass shooter killed 51 people in New Zealand, the politicians there managed to enact new gun laws in THREE WEEKS. Australia is also notable as a place that quickly changed their gun laws after a massacre.

But not in America. In America the bodies keep piling up and piling up and piling up as the NRA conveniently buys all the Senators it needs to maintain the status quo and keep the blood flowing, no matter how much the rest of us are screaming about how fucked up this all is…after we attend the funerals of friends and family we have lost.

If the Founding Fathers could see how we’ve twisted the Second Amendment they’d say: “What the fucking hell is wrong with you people?!”

Will America ever learn? I’m starting to wonder if the answer is no.

I’ve been warning about de facto church militias for quite a while. Looks like they’re ready to come out into the open. This is a serious threat because Evangelical church networks provide the local organizational framework that armed right wing nutjobs otherwise lack.

The average uniformed private militia would have trouble mustering 20 armed members for an operation, and their motivation is certainly open to question once things become real. There are plenty of nutter churches that could raise a force of 200 or more armed fanatics on a moment’s notice.

Heck, I’d propose that your scenario is so humane you’re missing out on sizable chunk of likely outcomes to waiting lists:

Some shitty people with rage issues won’t be able to sustain that urge to kill and therefore won’t, though they will remain shitty people.

I worry that in the wake of a major natural and/or man-made catastrophe that large parts of America are going to start looking like Somalia on steroids

Rees-Mogg accuses Letwin of “stunning arrogance”. He says Letwin has misunderstood parliament. Its authority comes from the people, he argues (which is why he says it should not be challenging the referendum result).

We got a taste of that in the post-Katrina South. Lots of gun toting folks around threatening to shoot anyone on sight if they caused problems.

And that WAS before, Obama and Trump ratcheted the RWNJs up to 11.

Rees-Mogg says parliamentary rules (the ones he has accuses John Bercow of subverting) are there to protect people from tyranny. He says there is a tried and tested means of removing an unpopular government - a confidence vote. But Labour has not tabled one, because it is afraid of losing, he claims.

Rees-Mogg says the bill involves a deliberate attempt to allow an extension long enough to allow a second legislation, or to allow Brexit to be revoked.

He says this procedure could be used again to have a further Brexit delay.

This would create a marionette government, he says.

Yep. That’s the idea, Jacob.

Frankly, a second referendum would be the most ideal. And if the Leavers lose in a second referendum, there will be virtually zero political will to go through this shower of shit for a good long time - and that explains why they’re getting increasingly desperate to ram through a no-deal.

This is it. This is their one and only chance, probably for a generation….and they damn well know it.

US vice-president’s unexpected support for British position on EU talks not expected

US vice-president Mike Pence leaves for London on Wednesday following a visit to Ireland that did not go entirely to plan. re: #1 Eclectic Cyborg

One thing about mass shooters is that they largely seem to be poorly socialized loners, generally not swimming in money. Right now, they can walk into a sporting goods store in many states and walk out with an AR15 and a crapload of ammunition, plus extended magazines to put it in. They don’t need social skills for that, and they don’t need a lot of money.

Now imagine if such guns were not legal in the US. Imagine the same poorly socialized loner, with a low wage job, trying to buy an AR15 on the black market. Imagine the sort of folks who would sell them, and imagine how much they’d charge, to cover the risk of arrest and imprisonment.

Jim Jeffries does a bit on this, saying that an AR15 on the black market in Australia costs $20K. I don’t know if it’s true, but that puts it squarely outside what a guy making minimum wage can afford.

The smell of desperation is utterly thick. So long as there’s neither a no-confidence vote or a snap election, the Tories are utterly powerless to do much of anything without a majority. Hence the efforts to goad the Remain crowd into a no-confidence vote, as even if Boris loses the vote, he’ll get a general election if Labour and the Lib Dems can’t form a new majority gov’t.

“Clever at fucking over people to get what you want, primarily leveraging their desire to be helpful and open, is not actually a skillset that translates to anything else. “

It’s kind of like when people declare serial killers genius when they all just get…as far they get…because normal people wouldn’t consider doing what they do, let alone counting it a win.

But the telling thing is that the shameless manipulation is presented as “genius” because people that deal in rhetoric…other politicians, commentators of all stripes…are evaluating the use of rhetoric orthogonal to honesty and morality. It’s the same shit that turns US analysis into discussions of “optics.” It’s like a bunch of actors that play surgeons trying to speak authoritatively about a real surgery but instead they end up calling Ted Bundy a criminal mastermind because they actually have shit for brains.

And I’ll go for the bonus points and observe that “love of rhetoric with nothing to it of meaning or conscience” explains the arc of fawning over Ben Shapiro as “smart guy” that continues even as he openly says stupid shit. If you only care about “winning” in rhetorical exercises his “I get the couch at a discount because I went to the store and defecated on” style of argument is pretty cool.

Extra funny points to the world for setting things up such that people high on the idea they’re the culmination of Western Civilization, and thus the successors of Hellenic philosophy, are sophists or individuals gulled by sophists.

I mean, the only thing that could be funnier was if the people screaming about the danger of postmodernists were exactly the kind of people the postmodernists warned us about, doing the exact thing the postmodernists said would fuck everybody up.

And the only thing funnier than that would be the same thing, but with Karl Marx.

In Brexit news:

Emily Thornberry, the shadow foreign secretary, has just told Sky News that Labour is desperate to hold a general election. But, asked if Labour would support a vote for a general election tomorrow, she says the party might abstain, or vote against. She says the party wants to see the bill ruling out a no-deal Brexit on 31 October passed first.

Under the Letwin plan, the bill could become law on Monday.

No 10 has been saying that, if the government loses the vote tonight, Boris Johnson will push for a vote on an early election tomorrow. But without Labour’s support, he will not get the two-thirds majority required under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act for the vote to be operable.

Good. They’re worried that Boris might try some shenanigans so by not collapsing his government right now, it’ll hold his feet to the fire. It makes it difficult for him to wriggle off the hook.

I remember something from the 80s that seems relevant now. There was an organization called Future Aviation Professionals of America. It helped newly licensed A&Ps find jobs in the aviation industry, especially the airlines. Their resume-writing guide included a strong warning against including any reference to guns or an interest in guns. It included some bad examples. For instance, don’t mention that you enjoy reloading or target shooting, or that you are an NRA certified instructor. I don’t know if these kinds of standards still exist but it’s a fair bet. I will mention it to my friend Carol, who is an expert on HR evaluation. She confirmed to me a while back that belief in batshit conspiracy theories was a disqualifier in many industries, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the closely related gun cult would be the same.

it’s got a thing called VHC that i never heard of till today

Vehicle Hold Control (VHC) applies and holds brake pressure when activated and prevents the motorcycle from rolling after the rider has released the brake controls. The primary function of VHC is to prevent the motorcycle from rolling when it is stopped - for example at a stop sign on a hill, in stop-and-go traffic on a slope, or on a steep decline out of a parking structure. VHC is designed to make it easier to ride away with confidence by minimizing the number of controls needed to pull away smoothly.

Idea: The EU countries have every right in the world to exclude anyone they consider to be a danger to public safety. This could very reasonably include NRA officials, prominent member and advocates, since it is their influence that keeps guns easily available in America. In turn this increases their illicit availability in Europe. Organized terror gangs can get their guns from colleagues in the middle east or Africa but garden variety scumbags use a different channel. They typically get them from the seemingly endless and relatively cheap supply in America.

re: #1 Eclectic Cyborg

I’m starting to wonder if the answer is no.

correct

there is no way to prevent the next specific mass shooting - by definition the next one that ‘gets through’ will be ‘next’

what we can easily do is prevent a lot of them overall - ie bring that veritable, predictable average of a mass shooting every single goddamned day down to something substantially less

re: #65 HappyWarrior

Because I’ve been on a weird sleepless journey making a forum post that heavily involved Milton and Goethe, my observation about the entire anti-SJW thing is that it smacks of the same shit that drives the literary devils.

They love order so long as order permits them what they want, but hate order that forbids them or is permissive to others; they celebrate power as long as it buoys them, but despise power that makes them feel governed.

And at the bottom, there is a wheedling cowardly love of the technicality and “to the letter” precisely because fine print and exceptions allow them to argue away the humane general principles of the law…whether that law is divine, of the state, or of general social mores. This is why regardless of country or context, in different arguments, the same elevation of rhetoric over episteme occurs: words do not exist to describe or express, only to convince. And why consent is a technicality, and why general principles suddenly develop exceptions when pointed towards their wants.

And what we’re watching as this fails to produce particularly good results, even relative to their limited and dull wants, is that they will accept the illusion of victory, coins with no worth, rather than reconsider their framing of the world [that what they want is wrong (incorrect) and wrong (inaccurate)]. Which is why they’re trapped in a cycle of conning and being conned by each other, all pretending that they’re acting in good faith until the simply can’t hide the bad faith…and the re-starting the same cycle, with the same obvious bad faith, the same pretending, and the same shitty outcome.

It would be funny except in the process they have to destroy anyone that won’t turn life in sad narcissistic point-scoring exercise.

There’s only two real good explanations for Moss’ attitude today. The first is that he’s purposefully trying to provoke the opposition into calling a no-confidence vote, in the hopes that they’ll fail to put together a coalition gov’t and force an election. One feature that annoys me on the stick shift is that it has a “fuel saving” feature, so if you’re quarter throttle and going about 20 mph, it sends you from first to fourth. And it always finds a way to kick in at the worst times, like when I’m in line turning onto a freeway on ramp. Or it does it in relatively stop-n-go traffic where I can’t get the RPMs up to suit fourth gear.

At least you don’t have the MDS, that shuts off 4 out of 8 cylinders when cruising. Mostly, I don’t even notice it, but at certain speeds, on the freeways around here which go up and down a bit, the engine tries too hard to keep being 2.85L instead of 5.7 when I’m going up a mildish grade.

I’d always had manuals, but I got an automatic in the Challenger - too much time crawling in stop-and-go traffic with the awful clutch in my old Outback! - and then the week after I got it I developed painful sciatica in my left leg that would have made it pure torture to drive a stick.

I went there once - one of my Imaginary Friends (as Mrs. FBW called my friends from the Bowsite) organized a get together there as part of the Farewell Tour for a beloved member of the crowd.

As I neared the place, I started seeing signs for acts I thought had long since given up the ghost. I mean, it was 2003, the Soviet Union hadn’t existed for a dozen years, and Yakov Smirnoff was headlining? “Eeen Amerrika, subject verbs object. BAHT, een Soviet Union, object verbs subject!”

The kicker with a discretely placed electric start button is really great when you find yourself in front of one of your favorite gathering places, amongst a group of fellow travelers who are desperately kicking their bikes in the dead of winter.

In the early 1980s I was in Japan as an exchange student; a couple of years later my homestay brother came to America as an exchange student. He was placed in a small town in the Osarks area (think Winter’s Bone and not Branson). As I passed broken down home with old cars and appliances in the yards when I went to pick him up to visit us in Illinois for a few days my heart sank.

Surprise: he was treated like a star in the community. It was so cool for them to have a kid from Japan and he had a great experience! His English was already pretty good, but he really improved. Today he’s an executive for Japan Airlines.

First he whipped Leave fervor so much that it won the referendum, but then got drug down by Cameron in the conflagration that immediately followed. He spent years in the political wilderness because he was an utter asshole on the foreign policy circuit. Boris Johnson says he will not go to the EU and request an extension and calls for a snap election. The opposition says they won’t grant an election until no deal is off the table. So if they take no deal off the table and refuse a new election and Boris refuses to ask for an extension, wont no deal happen anyway just because the clock runs out?

Johnson has capacities for learning and some erudition, but ultimately his personality cancels out the beneficial effect.

It’s stupidity emanating from fundamentally not caring about the worth of information and people beyond super fucking basic selfish ends, and thus neglecting skills for handling information and people that do anything other than buoy their (super fucking basic selfish) worldview. He and has cohort are specifically losing their shit because they can’t conceive their power doesn’t grant deference, even when they’ve undermined the norms and rules that undergird and justify that power.

I need someone to explain UK parliament to me. So the commons is going to vote tomorrow to take a no deal Brexit off the table.

The commons can’t just say we won’t leave without a deal, someone has to go negotiate that with the EU right?

The “Benn bill” that’s coming to a vote tomorrow says that Boris has to either get a deal that Parliament agrees to by Oct 19th or else must seek an extension from the EU for no earlier than Jan 31st, 2020. And if the EU offers a longer extension, then Boris has to agree to it within two days unless the Commons votes to oppose the offered date.

Yeah, Boris could refuse to execute the bill if passed, but the bill also allows time for litigation in such a situation. And considering the revelations today in the courts about his reasons for prorogation, as well as other members of his Cabinet being on record as admitting they don’t believe Boris will seek a deal, the odds that he wins in the courts are…remote.

So then pass a law making the private sale of guns illegal. Works for me. This is not an impossible problem to tackle if our politicians are willing to do something.

im fine with private sales
make every sale subject to background checks - otherwise the idea, as we’ve seen, is worthless

if you dont reasonably vet the buyer, it’s an invalid transfer and whatever he does with your gun is on you

Yellow lines are original coastline. You couldn’t comprehend the amount of flooding and destruction they’ve seen

Is the “disappeared” coastal plain a temporary effect of water that is piled up for the moment, or have hydro forces scoured away layers of the land? Anyone’s guess?

What is it with rich women and expensive, dumb and obviously uncomfortable dress choices? That’s just dumb and hideous. I bet she paid more for that than most people make in a month, or more. Gross.

re: #197 Khal Wimpo (the extinguisher of tiki torches)

Boomers buying these bikes lack the hand/foot control to keep the rear brake on with the right foot while gradually rolling on the throttle and letting out the clutch.

And no, they don’t know how to ride. They just want to grab a piece of their youth back. Which is why accident stats for old farts are going through the roof…

I’ll confess that I’m one of those people who can’t coordinate my hands and feet to brake and shift at the same time. To get around that, I bought a 250cc scooter with a CVT transmission and brakes that work just like my bicycle. I was about 55 when I bought it and it was the most fun decision I’ve ever made.

I don’t remotely care about the cool factor (it’s a Kymco, not a Vespa). I like that guys on Harley’s don’t want to be seen within 500 feet of me. I like that I don’t have to care that I can’t afford the clothes that go with the Harley image.

I upgraded to a 300cc fuel injected scooter a couple years ago (another Kymco) and I love it. The third best thing about it is that it can go 85 mph if I need to. The second best thing about it is that it’s a lot more comfy at 55-70 mph. The absolute best thing about it is that it can’t go 120 mph.

edit: and of course the thread is now dead.
