Aug. 29, 2019 | Colin Marshall — Dan Tepfer has transformed the acoustic piano entirely with his new project, Natural Machines. Watch the keys and you’ll see this Disklavier — a player piano — plucking notes on its own. But it’s not a prerecorded script.

Here’s how it works: Tepfer plays a note, and a computer program he authored reads those notes and tells the piano what to play in response. Tepfer can load different algorithms into the program that determine the pattern of playback, like one that returns the same note, only an octave higher. Another will play the inverted note based on the center of the piano keys. These rules create interesting restrictions that Tepfer says make room for thoughtful improvisation. In his words, he’s not writing these songs, so much as writing the way they work. To better communicate what’s happening between him and the piano, Tepfer converted these audio-impulse data into visualizations on the screen behind him, displaying in real time the notes he plays followed by the piano’s feedback. We dive even deeper into this project in a recent Jazz Night in America video piece.

Perhaps the trickiest part here, unlike a human-to-human duo, is that the computer plays along with 100 percent accuracy based solely on Tepfer’s moves. He compares it to dancing with a robot that never misses a beat. Tepfer has to play in kind to keep the train on the tracks, but if he falls out of step, so does the computer. On the other hand, Tepfer has unlocked a new frontier of music available to acoustic piano players: He’s essentially given himself more limbs to play the piano at once, and at times we see more than 10 keys pressed at a time or a sequence of notes played at seemingly superhuman speeds. It’s a central idea to what innovative technology enables for us — that which is impossible for us to achieve on our own.

Yikes! A friend just sent me this link. I may know this person but I’ll keep it to myself until there is confirmation.

FBI /ATF investigating after executing search warrant at Lubbock home, apparently in connection with Midland/Odessa shootings

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - FBI and the ATF are still investigating after serving a search warrant in the 3400 block of Mesa Road in Lubbock, across from the Lubbock Country Club, apparently in connection with the Midland/Odessa shootings from Saturday.

We’re still waiting on official confirmation, but we believe this search is related to the manufacture and sale of the AR-15 used in the Midland/Odessa shootings.

The search was conducted around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Wall Street Journal reports that law enforcement is investigating a person of interest in Lubbock, suspected of illegally manufacturing and selling the rifle used in Saturday’s mass shooting in Midland/Odessa.

Ugh. Our little window air conditioner keeps the house cool enough. It seems to do okay even on the really hot days.

When our last air conditioner died, we were close to dying here with 100°F temps inside every day.

It’s not even close.

Recycling and using public transit are all fine and good if you want to reduce your carbon footprint, but to truly make a difference you should have fewer children. That’s the conclusion of a new study in which researchers looked at 39 peer-reviewed papers, government reports, and web-based programs that assess how an individual’s lifestyle choices might shrink their personal share of emissions.

Many commonly promoted options, such as washing clothes in cold water or swapping incandescent bulbs for light-emitting diodes, have only a moderate impact (see chart, below), the team reports today in Environmental Research Letters. But four lifestyle choices had a major impact: Become a vegetarian, forego air travel, ditch your car, and—most significantly—have fewer children.

Can’t live car-free here, no public transportation at all.
Avoid one trans-Atlantic trip. We’ve only made one.
Buy green energy? Does it come in bags or cans?
Buy a more efficient car. They aren’t much more efficient than mine.
Eat a plant-based diet. There’s a lot to unpack there. I’m not a vegetarian, so mostly no.
Replace gasoline with a hybrid. Sure, just need a huge injection in my bank account.
Wash clothes in cold water. Already do that with rare exceptions.
Recycle. Recycling is not available here. Where we can, we reuse though.
Hang dry clothes. Already do that most of the time.
Upgrade light bulbs. Most of my lights are tube florescents.

Looks like that might be over. Apparently, the House of Lords has dropped their filibuster efforts. Rumors are swirling as to the reason why - everything from a gentleman’s agreement for immediate snap elections to rumors that the government (Johnson and his cabinet) have basically given up and decided to face the inevitable.

re: #37 Targetpractice

The Brexiters are waging one last stands in the Lords, trying to drag out votes on amendments to prevent a vote before 5pm Friday when Parliament is prorogued.

Here’s the story:

The House of Lords has agreed to get the Benn bill ruling out a no-deal Brexit through all stages of parliament before it is suspended by Boris Johnson.

Around 1.30am on Thursday following late-night debate, peers were told it had been agreed that the bill - which has been passed by rebel Tories and opposition MPs in the Commons - would be returned to the lower house by 5pm on Friday, ruling out the prospect of attempts at a filibuster.

It could then be voted on again by MPs on Monday and presented for royal assent, the Lords heard. Peers are set to debate the Benn bill itself and amendments on Thursday.

Baroness Smith, Labour’s leader in the House of Lords, said the opposition supported the move, and hoped there would be “no further frustrations” of the bill on Friday.

theguardian.com

Like I said, rumors are swirling as to why this happened - but one obvious answer is that there are more Labour and LibDem peers than Tory peers; the Tories were simply outnumbered.

In business news (though not necessarily Brexit-related):

Marks & Spencer is to be demoted from the FTSE 100 for the first time in the latest sign of the declining fortunes of the retailer, which was a founding member of the leading City share index.

Relegation to the FTSE 250 comes as the company is closing 120 stores as part of an overhaul designed to shore up profits.

M&S’s demotion reflects a share price at nearly a 20-year low as a long-running sales slump at the retailer’s clothing arm is compounded by the high street crisis affecting rivals including Debenhams and House of Fraser.

I genuinely didn’t know that M&S was in such trouble. They do brisk business here in Czech Republic - the stores in the two shopping centers closest to me are never empty.

I’d hate to see them go…..no kidding, best place in the whole country to buy socks and underwear. They’re very durable and well-made and far better than anything else I’ve found here.

re: #45 NO SMOCKING GUN!

Yep, they are.

Here, in Czech Republic, I can certainly understand why.

I found a Casio G-Shock GW-M-5610-1 for sale for the equivalent of $118 USD - not too bad here. But, it was for sale at an online retailer in the city of Olomouc, about 60 miles from my location.

So I went to my local watch retailer and politely inquired if they’d do price matching (a not-uncommon practice with major US retailers). Well, they looked at me as if I’d just announced that I’d arrived from Mars.

My local retailers price on the exact same watch works out to $196 USD. So…..after finding out they won’t do price matching (for reasons best known to themselves), I took a trip to Olomouc, to the online retailer’s pick-up location, and got it.

Even with the train trip, I still ended up saving over $65.

Brick-and-mortar retail here is gonna end up getting eaten alive by internet shops, largely because traditional retailers here simply don’t know how to compete.

German retail trade laws dated back to the early 1900’s, when people were not as mobile or well informed, there were limited opportunities, and they also had to be protected from unscrupulous travelling salespeople.

Needless to say, the entire situation has become a lot more transparent and flexible and they did reform the laws to allow some more possibilities for discounts.

That’s good to hear.

In thinking as to why my local watch retailer wouldn’t do price matching, it could be because a lot of Czechs are still somewhat reluctant to do shopping online (I have some students like that, for example) and because they may also believe that no one would travel 60 miles to save some money. Indeed, for Czechs, travelling 60 miles (about 100 km) to purchase an item is something a good many of them wouldn’t do - but as an American, for me, 60 miles is nothing, especially when I can save the equivalent of $65 and some change by doing so. Hell, $65 is grocery money for almost two weeks for me.

If that holds true, there’s a good chance that the Tories could get hammered by Farage’s Brexit Party for having failed to deliver Brexit by October 31st - and owing to the nature of the UK’s “first-past-the-post” elections, that could fatally split the Leaver’s votes and possibly giving Labour an electoral advantage.

It’s why BoJo is so desperate to have an election ASAP. He knows the Tories would probably get their asses handed to them if Brexit fails to materialize.

I can sit in here with a fan and an open door, up to roughly 86. After that, I’ve got to get AC on. There’s no back door or window, so I can’t get any kind of breeze moving.

Boris…what a guy.

Jo Swinson, the Lib Dem leader, issued this statement welcoming Luciana Berger to her party. (See 11.14am.) Swinson said:

Luciana is a passionate advocate for women’s and LGBT+ rights, and she’s at the forefront of efforts to counter anti-Semitism and prevent discrimination. I’m delighted to welcome her to the Liberal Democrats, where we can work together to stop Brexit and build a fairer, more equal society for all.

Luciana becomes the fourth MP in three months to cross the floor and join the Liberal Democrats. We’re thrilled to add her perspective, expertise and skills to our ever-growing parliamentary team.

The Liberal Democrats are growing in strength as we lead the fight to Stop Brexit altogether. We are fully behind a people’s vote, and we are the rallying point for remainers and the liberal centre ground.

The other MPs who have joined the Lib Dems recently are Chuka Umunna, Sarah Wollaston and Phillip Lee.

And this is what Berger said in a statement about her move.

This is a moment of national crisis. The Liberal Democrats are unequivocal in wanting to stop Brexit and are committed to securing Britain’s future as a tolerant, open and inclusive society.

I am joining Jo Swinson and the Liberal Democrats today, in the national interest, to offer a vital, positive alternative to Johnson and Corbyn and help build a future that our country deserves.

As best I understand it*, Jeremy Corbyn built up his base of support in the Labour Party in the good-old-fashioned old-school-lefty way: building up cadres of sympathetic loyalists, and then getting them inserted in the Party’s organizational and administrative sections. And then relying on their support to first get him in power, and then, aided by the reluctance of a lot of Labourites to openly split the Party over internal disputes, stay there.

I also disagree ( but see disclaimer above) that Corbyn is an “empty suit” - it’s just that IMO, what’s in the “suit” - easily, if simplistically, caricatured as “boldly moving Britain forward into the 1970s!” - isn’t what a lot of the British electorate wants or needs. Admittedly, the man has been subject, of late, to an image-smearing campaign of Hillary-Clinton-level intensity, but the unfortunate facts are that old Jez is going to be the face of Labour for the immediate future. Which (even more unfortunately) is a gift to their opponents.

re: #91 Jay C

ADD: And, just IMO, I don’t think the Lib Dems are going to be much of a solution to the Brexit problem (last-chance bastion of Remainers as they seem to want to be). ISTM that British politics evolved into a de facto two-party system many decades ago, and that, whatever else its problems, those systems tend to be stable. When that model - in a parliamentary democracy - breaks down, one runs the risk of Governments having to rely (as in Europe) on parliamentary coalitions to govern. Which runs the risk of a) governmental instability/inability to get things done, or b) gives a built-in advantage to whichever side (Left or Right) can keep “on message” better: whether in Government or Opposition. And the Brits (AFAICT) seem truly appalled at the instability the Brexit debacle has engendered.

I agree with what you said, mostly. Definitely on part one. On him being an empty suit, perhaps I stated that incorrectly. He has no chance of winning as PM. None. He’s supported by the party (as you rightly noted) and completely ineffective.

That BoJo and Corbyn are the best options for the UK is appalling. At least we had good people (Clinton/Kaine) who were fucked out of the election, but the UK voters have little choice…and none that are good (at the moment).

And another one bites the dust:

Dame Caroline Spelman, the Conservative former environment secretary, has said she is standing down at the next election. Along with Labour’s Jack Dromey (they are both West Midlands MPs with many constituents working in the car industry), she tabled amendments earlier this year that led to the Commons voting against a no-deal Brexit. (The votes were not binding.) She also rebelled yesterday to back the Benn bill designed to rule out a no-deal Brexit.

I’ve given up on any “debates” with Conservatives when the entire Conservative debate tactic is to try and frame each topic with a laundry list of lazy labeling and logical fallacies, mostly false dilemma, hyperbole, cherry picking data, and broad use of red herrings.

If you go into a “debate” with a Conservative it is not so much an exercise in pure logic as it is grandstanding and a song and dance meant to make the right wing tribe viewership excuse and actually feel good about their sheer evil.

So sadly true. The “history” of Brexit is still unfolding, of course, but I have a sinking feeling, that when it does come to get written-about in the past tense, it is going to read like (and get the same general reaction as) accounts of the collapse of the French Third Republic in WWII. I.e., what should have been done will be obvious, but the failure to do so will be assigned to the fact that the politicians in charge were a bunch of second-raters, ideologues, or just plain idiots.

It’s remarkable how accurate the forecast model (the official NHC forecast w/5 day cone) was compared to the actual track. The actual NHC forecast - the discussion, which supersedes any spaghetti model or other product - never included AL in the path. There were several 5-day cone forecasts that touched the AL border, but that’s such weak tea that no one in Charleston would touch it.

Of course, Trump’s busy kvetching all over Twitter about this and other nonsensical ravings of a lunatic mind to ignore that Charleston is getting battered by the outer bands of Dorian and its storm surge as the storm strengthened back to a cat 3 storm.

That’s also kinda unusual given that the storm is interacting with the coastline and landmass of the continental US, and that usually causes wind shear and weakens the system. Thus far, by staying just offshore, the storm can continue to gain energy from the warm waters as it churns up the East coast.

I’m curious if Crenshaw, who seems so ready to vouch for he friends that he’d allow them to “borrow” his guns, would be willing to sign paperwork taking legal responsibility for any unlawful actions committed with those guns? If his friend should injure themselves or others, damage private property, or commit a crime (ex: murder), would he take responsibility for giving them his gun?

- my opinion is he doesnt have to be willing to sign anything, or actually sign anything
- he *is* the legal owner.
- no private citizen can sell it or tell him what or what not to do with it, or demand he cede it to them*
- as the legal owner he, and no one else, is totally responsible for all the decision making and controlling of his weapon at all times
if he gives, loans, or in any other way ‘transfers’ or loses physical custody of his weapon (improper storage), he is still responsible for whatever is done with or by that weapon

the overlayed spaghetti models are a public curio.
until you sit down and do the hard work of assigning probabilities to each path (plus a lot more analysis), they’re nothing but dumbed down, simplistic and cool looking pictures

that’s why there’s (generally) one single ‘official’ cone forecast, and even that has limits on what it is intending to predict

Boris has already more-or-less been painted into a corner by all this. Much like how Matteo Salvini was so recently hoisted on his own petard - his plan to get himself into the Italian PM’s office blew up in his face and while he is still an Italian MP, he’s no longer in any position of real power.

Well, Kushner rolled out a vaporware plan to the Arab Gulf States, and it landed with a thud. No one was supportive and Trump got nowhere with it. It remains vaporware, and now Maggie’s busy claiming that the architect of this is leaving?

How will we know he’s gone when there’s no evidence he did anything remotely identified as a plan. There’s just vaporware and bulkshit spewed by Trumpworld about everything, and we have Maggie regurgitating it as though we don’t see what she’s doing (or what Trump’s done).

How very trumpian.

BMA labels Rees-Mogg ‘disgraceful’ after he smears doctor who has warned about no-deal

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the leader of the Commons, has been strongly criticised for using parliamentary privilege to attack the reputation of a doctor who has warned about the dangers of a no-deal Brexit.

On Monday Rees-Mogg was involved in a row on his LBC phone-in with David Nicholl, a consultant neurologist drew up a risk register of epilepsy and neurology drugs for the government’s Operation Yellowhammer plans for no deal. Rees-Mogg said he did not accept Nicholl’s claim that people could die because of drug shortages in the event of a no-deal Brexit. Nicholl subsequently described the MP as an ignorant “muppet”.

Today Rees-Mogg resumed the dispute at business questions, comparing Nicholl to Andrew Wakefield, the doctor whose discredited research linking autism to the MMR vaccine has been blamed for vaccination levels falling, putting lives at risk.

Rees-Mogg told MPs:

Preparations are in place and they are being done with remarkable efficiency. But yes, a lot of remainers wish to make our skins crawl.

What [Nicholl] had to say, I will repeat it, is as irresponsible as Dr Wakefield in threatening that people will die because we leave the European Union. What level of irresponsibility was that?

And I’m afraid it seems to me that Dr David Nicholl is as irresponsible as Dr Wakefield.

In response, the SNP MP Carol Monaghan said Rees-Mogg’s comment suggested the government wanted to cause “reputational damage to experts such as Dr David Nicholl who dare to challenge the government or indeed raise legitimate concerns about the impact of no-deal?”

Jonathan Ashworth, the shadow health secretary, said Rees-Mogg’s comments were “offensive, irresponsible [and] shameful”.

Jacob Rees-Mogg is a living, breathing caricature of a Victorian undertaker. There’s a reason he’s referred to as “The Honorable Gentleman for the 19th Century”.

Johnson’s an entitled prick, a smug and boorish golden boy who thinks he deserves to be the UK’s Prime Minister. Watching him implode in damn near record time is liable to make me overdose on schadenfreude.

rikyrah has a very interesing comment over at Balloon Juice:

About Biden and his supporters:

Joy Reid had on Tara Dowdell (sp?) this weekend, and she told of going to a function where they were trying to recruit Black female candidates. She was at a gathering of Black women from over 14 Southern states, and she told of their support for Biden. She was like, this was the time before he even announced, and people were dumping opposition research stories about Biden.

In her words:
” They were not moved. Not one bit.”

She said, I’m paraphrasing
” They KNOW Joe Biden, and even though, yes, a nice part of it is Obama nostalgia, a large part of it not only do they believe they know Joe Biden - they believe that Joe Biden CARES ABOUT THEM…..and, THIS is his secret with the Union people TOO - they say it over and over when talking about Biden.”

I am a political junkie. Most people, regardless of race, aren’t. And, it goes the same for the Black community that I live in and navigate. These folks all have a positive thought about Biden.

The unsaid thing that so many who are dancing around Biden in MSM punditry, is the belief from Black folk that White folks showed their azzes in 2016, and until they prove differently, fundamentally cannot be trusted….but, folks don’t want to have that conversation.

While Trump wallows in the great Alabama hurricane of 2019, Chef Jose Andres is busy providing meals and assistance to the folks in Bermuda who were left without homes or power, just as he did after Maria hit Puerto Rico and the USVI.

He does more for victims of natural disasters than Trump does because he’s selfless when it comes to helping others beyond his immediate associations. Trump thinks only of himself and photo ops.

Manafort has filed papers in the NYS case against him, claiming that the prosecutors are pushing a political case and that the case should be dismissed on double jeopardy grounds.

He’s charged with 16 counts under NY law for residential mortgage fraud, attempted residential mortgage fraud, conspiracy, falsifying business records and scheme to defraud.

Hey Dan Crenshaw. That’s why you don’t give guns to people like candy.

That is why any transfer of a gun should require a background check, regardless of whether the transfer is a gift from a friend or family member or an inheritance. And if you give a gun to someone without the background check, then you should be subject to at least one year of prison.

there are various governmental efforts to stop drunk driving
whether they are effective, enough, at least they exist

part of why walmart stopped selling certain ammo and handguns etc is because governments (federal and state) are not responding to the obvious epidemic of gun related violence

i’ll just add:
- “transfer” includes temporary - ie ‘loans’
- penalties should also be commensurate with anything illegal done with that gun. if you didnt take reasonable precautions when you sold or temporarily transferred your weapon, then you lost control of it

unless every transfer is subject to a bg check, the system is meaningless
