Before you tell me, I know I posted this one before. But it remains one of the most beautiful arrangements of this classic Lola Beltrán ballad ever recorded. (And I’ve listened to a lot of them.)

From the DVD “Yerakina” released September 23rd, 2014 on GroundUP Music.

Dicen que por las noches
no mas se le iba en puro llorar,
dicen que no comía
no mas se le iba en puro tomar;
con sus puertitas de par en par;
juran que esa paloma
no es otra cosa mas que su alma,
que todavía la espera
a que regrese la desdichada.
Cucurrucucú, paloma,
cucurrucucú, no llores.
Las piedras jamás, paloma
qué van a saber de amores.

English Translation

They say that at night
all he could do was cry;
they say he wouldn’t eat,
all he could do was drink.
They swear that even the sky
Shuddered, listening to his cry.
So much he suffered for her
that in death he still called her.
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, he sang
ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, he whimpered.
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, he sang,
of mortal fervor, he was dying.
A sorrowful dove would sing
in the early morning
in a lonely house with wide-open windows.
They swear that the dove was nothing else
but his soul
that still waits for her return.
Cucurrucucú paloma,
cucurrucucú, don’t cry.
what do stones know of love, paloma?

Or perhaps, just maybe, there’s nothing wrong with multiculturalism because integrating the best parts of multiple cultures makes the resulting combination even stronger. But these people don’t like that because it means a loss in their (perceived or actual) power.

Unless we create such destruction that we are isolated back into low-population enclaves, humans will inevitably blend into one culture. PhD Ethnologists hate this simple trick.

I’ve dreamed about my ex over the years, less as time’s gone on. Common theme: we’re in a relationship but it’s stale and awkward: think Bruce Willis in 6th Sense.

Same for smoking. Except in the dream I’m smoking and feel bad about it, then wake up and feel good.

Something to consider as it was mentioned above on why wouldn’t the Taliban want to meet in a neutral country such as Switzerland:

I imagine the Taliban’s leaders trust Donald Trump about as much as we do. Imagine the press coup for Trump if he had them all arrested at Camp David. Then imagine the international outrage at imprisoning negotiators (which Trump doesn’t care about). Trump gets to claim a “greater victory” than Obama.

I’m lucky in that I was never in bad relationship with a bad person. I was crushed when my first wife said ‘I love you but I’m not in love with you.’ Sorta ruins the moment, no? Like BB King said, the thrill was gone with her.

I got lucky and found love again and we’ve been going strong for 18 years now. I still probably dream about my ex maybe once a year.

No. I’m pretty sure I was happily single when that happened.

I had zero desire to ever marry again. None. At all. Ever.

And honestly, if my current hubby wasn’t a foreign national and if Canada didn’t start giving me a hard time about going there (here) so often, I probably wouldn’t have.

I spent a good month doing introspection about WHY I dreamt that. To this day I have no clue. And it creeps me out just thinking about it now.

Yes it is absolutely a “thing which matters” for two reasons:

a) The president keeps bringing it up. Much as we’d like to, we cannot ignore the president.
2) He is trying to bend the free press to his will (and with it whatever remains of our democratic republic).

And as the forecasters at NWS Birmingham have already noted, they didn’t know about Trump saying anything about potential hurricane impacts on Alabama. They only sent out their tweet because they suddenly started getting a bunch of calls from concerned residents in the area, and they took to Twitter to note there would be no effect from the hurricane in their area.

They were the Mujahideen at the time. Ronald Reagan’s government funded them (though the USA was not the primary funder) against the Soviet Union’s occupancy of Afghanistan.

After the Soviet Union withdrew its troops, elements of the Mujahideen attempted to form a government, but fell to fighting with each other. The Taliban took advantage of the civil unrest and took the country and crushed the Mujahideen.

I had a period of a couple months where I smoked in my dreams. It felt very relaxing and natural. I smoked maybe two cigarettes in my teens and then never touched them again.

In a development I’ve always dreamed of but never thought I’d actually get to write about, an actor from The Room, the 2003 movie so awful it’s become a great cult classic film, has announced a bid for Congress.

Via the Texas Tribune’s Patrick Svitek, Daily Kos Election’s (okay, only my) new favorite Democrat in the whole country is Dan Janjigian, who was on Armenia’s two-man bobsledding team during the 2002 Winter Olympics shortly before his star turn as the drug dealer Chris R. (The character is only in one scene and just referred to as “Chris R.”) Janjigian was later played by Zac Efron in The Disaster Artist, the 2017 Oscar-nominated movie about the making of The Room.

On Thursday, Janjigian announced he was launching a bid for the Democratic nod against veteran GOP Rep. John Carter in Texas’ 31st Congressional District, a 54-41 Trump seat in Austin’s northern suburbs. Carter won an unexpectedly expensive contest just 51-48 last year against MJ Hegar, who is now running for the Senate, and he could be vulnerable again in a seat that GOP Sen. Ted Cruz carried only 50.5-48.4. Sadly, though, I doubt that this district has a large enough electorate of fans of trash cinema to give Janjigian much of an opening. Though maybe he could try raising money as Chris R. and see what happens.

I hadn’t realized that the Disaster Artist was actually about a real movie.

Few politicians have lied as brazenly and habitually as Boris Johnson

Today the political environment has changed and we seem to live in an age of shameless political liars and bloviators from Johnson and Nigel Farage in the UK to Donald Trump in the US.

I maintain that contemporary societies are struggling to deal with the after effects of modernism, from the death-of-god, to instant messaging around the world (making the world much smaller.)

The detachment being engaged in holding accountable the outright sociopathic liars like Trump and Johnson is because their followers don’t really want to accept the unpleasant conclusions of the post modern world: that we are just animals on the way to our graves, that there is nothing magical, and no escape, that no group is special in this world, no one group are the “chosen ones”, that in the end all we have are each other to help us find our way to the next day.

PETA takes aim at Nebraska Game and Parks for duck, fish competitions (goes to Nebraska TV-ABC)

If you’re in need of a brain scan, PETA is offering to foot the bill for hunters who compete in some Nebraska Game and Parks programs.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals released a statement on Friday regarding the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s “Duck Slam,” “Upland Slam,” and “Trout Slam.”

People who obtain pleasure from killing others are mentally deficient, missing the empathy and mirror neurons in their brain wiring, and PETA is out to prove it: We’re offering $1,000 towards a brain scan for psychopathy in the first hunter to complete one of these odious slaughterfests.

Does it tho’? At this point we’re essentially just differentiating between marketing schemes for selfish, awful, inexcusable behavior. The way I see it right now the latter group is more honest about being okay with abject evil while the former are mired in denial about the predictable consequences of the policies they tacitly supported for decades. That’s pretty thin as far as moral distinctions go.

JFC, these people:

Boris Johnson is threatening to sabotage the EU to make it cave in on a Brexit deal - or reject MPs’ plan to stop the UK crashing out of the bloc.

In a dramatic escalation of its battle with Brussels, Downing Street believes it has devised a way out of the crisis to make the EU no longer “legally constituted”, paralysing its decision-making.

The extraordinary plan would see the UK refuse to appoint a commissioner, putting the EU in breach of its own legal duty for all 28 member states to be represented on its executive branch.

No 10 believes the UK would be “disrupting” Brussels life to such a degree that member states will then make it clear they will refuse to grant an Article 50 extension - even if asked for.

A source said: “We will turn the pressure onto the EU to show how difficult it will be for them if the UK is still hanging around.”

The aim is to force an acceptable Brexit deal, but the source added: “If they won’t negotiate a deal, it would be ideal if they would kick us out.”

independent.co.uk

The obvious glaring flaw in this Baldrick-esque plan is that there is no legal mechanism in the EU to actually kick out a member state.

Nope. The human brain is the cause of these messes.

Democracies are getting into these messes because the principle of democracy itself carries the seeds of their own destruction. All it takes is enough voters to vote in conservatives who care more about power than representative democracy, and the democracy is done.

Nope. The human brain is the cause of these messes.

Of course. My contention is that we’ve made something or ourselves about which we can’t really comprehend or process emotionally.

In the big picture of life on this planet, an oft encountered phenomenon is that a species grows to be too large physically to adapt to some rapid change (climate, introduction of a new predator, etc.)

We now are doing something similar socially, if not anatomically (though we are getting bigger anatomically too, which is its own problem.)

So wingnut radio in London (LBC) distorted what France actually said about this. Quelle Surprise.

France’s Europe Minister Amelie de Montchalin reacted sceptically on Thursday to British MPs’ quest for a third Brexit delay, saying that delaying the process again, “without changing anything”, would not solve Britain’s Brexit “problem.”

De Montchalin was speaking a day after British MPs approved a bill that could force Prime Minister Boris Johnson to delay Brexit until January or later.

“It’s not because a problem is complicated that by diluting it over time and delaying it for three months without changing anything, it will be resolved,” she told France’s Radio Classique.

That is not the same as “France will refuse.”

re: #183 Dr Lizardo

There doesn’t necessarily need to be any formal coördination between various right-wing outlets.

They can just follow each other (in this case the Czech site following Breitbart) and regurgitating what each other writes.

It makes that appear as though a lot of different outlets are reporting on something when in reality it’s only one or two and the rest is copypasta.

Dorian is still causing damage.

The center of Post-Tropical Dorian was located near latitude 48.7 N longitude 60.8 W or about 157 km north-northeast of the Magdalen Islands. Dorian is still an intense Post-Tropical cyclone with maximum winds estimated at 70 knots…130 km/h and central pressure at 964 mb. Dorian is moving northeast at about 23 knots…43 km/h.

Environment Canada is reporting over half a million customers without power, down trees and power lines, and other damage.

Yes it is absolutely a “thing which matters” for two reasons:

a) The president keeps bringing it up. Much as we’d like to, we cannot ignore the president.
2) He is trying to bend the free press to his will (and with it whatever remains of our democratic republic).

Trump sees it as symptomatic of how the Fake News Media mistreat the President and how much he deserves an apology for it.

Trump sees it as symptomatic of how the Fake News Media mistreat the President and how much he deserves an apology for it.

As others have noted here, that’s why he won’t let it go. He’s waiting for some outlet (other than FOX) to either move to a magic balance fairy centrist position (maybe we should listen to both sides) or outright apologise, so he can then claim victim of a “presidential witch hunt” by the “lugenpresse.”

“Not one of those academics would factor a students ideology into grades.”

And appropriately so, but I think these conservative students are more talking about the fact they’d be graded poorly on an assignment in which they said there’s a lack of evidence supporting evolution or that the American Civil War had little to do with slavery or the science behind Climate Change is not even close to settled, so they give the more “Liberal” answers to keep their grades up.

Mostly, they’re afraid they’re not going to get laid.

The way I see it right now the latter group is more honest about being okay with abject evil while the former are mired in denial about the predictable consequences of the policies they tacitly supported for decades. That’s pretty thin as far as moral distinctions go.

But, recognizing it as hardly “a swing state,” Parscale still pointed to California — a bastion of fundraising, voter contact operations and volunteer firepower — as a lynchpin in “the fight for the future of this country,” he said, predicting that “the Trumps will be a dynasty that lasts for decades.”

Asked later if he believes the Trump children represent future candidates, Pascale said: “I just think they’re a dynasty. I think they’re all amazing people…with amazing capabilities. I think you see that from Don Jr. I think you see that from Ivanka. You see it from Jared. You see it from all.”

Just cause a previous president ( of either party) did or didn’t do something doesn’t make it smart or not smart to do it now….

Brad Parscale predicts Trump Dynasty:

Out of the Trump brood, the only one who might have a political future…is Barron. Uday and Qusay are fighting over that brain cell their father bequeathed to them, Ivanka has all the depth of a parking lot puddle, and Jared could used as an example of “rich idiot” if he doesn’t end up in a cell next to daddy before this is all said and done.

Of course, none of this matters if the Trump family’s “wealth” ends up the subject of numerous lawsuits and criminal investigations once Comrade Combover leaves office.

Oh, and the biggest obstacle to any of Trump’s children ever being a politician: Being a child of Donald Trump. Most political dynasties in US politics were usually built upon a patriarch who either never held office or one who did but never achieved much, so that their sons could be seen as succeeding where their fathers didn’t. Mango Mussolini is going to be seen as a failure and none of his kids are ever going to be able to live that legacy down. The only one that has any hope is Barron because he’s too young to have been part of the whole spectacle beyond that of a bystander.

Arnold pushed through a DMV license rate cut and a tax cut that let the red ink run like the dam was broke. It took a full term for Jerry Brown to stop the hemorrhaging and put California back in the black. Jerry also said he would not back a tax increase without going to the people and having them pass it via initiative, which we did by a substantial margin.

From Fox News:

Fox News Legal Analyst Has A Stark Warning For Republicans Who Support Trump

In a video on Fox News, Napolitano said Trump has also essentially created his own sales tax ― again, a power that is supposed to belong to Congress ― in the form of his tariffs on Chinese goods, likewise done in the name of a supposed emergency. He summed it up in his column:

After years of faithless Congresses legally but unconstitutionally ceding power to the presidency, we have arrived where we are today ― a president who spends unappropriated funds, raises taxes, defies courts and changes immigration laws on his own.

Napolitano warned that the same Republicans who are cheering as Trump uses these unconstitutional powers “will weep over it when a Democrat is in the White House.”
In his video presentation, Napolitano called it “dangerous to our liberty” to let the president take the powers that belong to Congress.
“When Congress lets presidents write their own laws, then he’s not a president,” Napolitano said. “He’s a prince.”

He’s such an idiot. Whoever told him that the world needed his insights is an even bigger one tho. Anyhow conservatives are so threatened by people encouraging less meat consumption. Maybe conservatives wouldn’t be such angry babies if they ate based on pissing off liberajs.

A couple days ago, a “libertarian-lite” acquaintance posted on FB an attack on Kamala Harris from townhall.com alleging she proposed “regulating” meat consumption. The Trumpsters all too this as an opportunity to demonize Republicans. Several of his sane FB friends pointed out that her actual proposal had to do with dietary guidelines — not regulations. His response — that was a slippery slope. I finally chimed in challenging that position and pointing out it was reminiscent of the conservative attacks on Michelle Obama for promoting healthy eating for children.

Amusing aside: when I was young and naive, I got a job with an actuarial consulting firm; my background was strictly in mathematics and statistics with no legal training. I didn’t know what a regulation was and so used the term inappropriately in a memo — for which I was appropriately excoriated. I suspect the Townhall person deliberately used the term to mislead his audience.

Thankfully, aside from the judicial appointments made by the Short-fingered Vulgarian, most of the exec branch appointments either expire with his presidency or can be launched out via trebuchet by whoever replaces him. And his failure to get much of a legislative agenda passed means that he’s been forced to take actions via exec branch departments or EOs, all of which can be reversed by the next person in line.

The damage, however, it going to take a good while to fix. And some damage, such as the lost markets for our agricultural goods, may be gone for good.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) said in a new interview that she opposes an effort by dozens of House Democrats for an impeachment inquiry into the president, saying it would cause further divisions within the U.S.

I don’t [support impeachment,]” Gabbard said. “You know, I think it’s important for us to think about what is in the best interest of the country and the American people, and continuing to pursue impeachment is something that I think will only further to tear our country apart.”

“Make no bones about it: We need to defeat Donald Trump. But I think it’s important for our country’s sake and our future that the voters in this country are the ones who do that, and I believe that we will,” Gabbard added.

Post Civil War samplers can be purchased for several hundred dollars, framed and admired. (Antebellum samplers generally run in the mid-five figures.) These I am not interested in. It’s the heartfelt words embroidered on cloth with needle and thread that get my attention. Last night I happened upon (again) Ashley’s Sack, a sack given to a nine-year-old slave girl by her mother with a few things in it when the child was sold off. The words on the sack were embroidered by Ashley’s granddaughter, Ruth.

The sack was originally at a museum at Middleton Place, whose antebellum owners possibly also owned Ashley and Rose, but its historical weight was apparently too much for the museum to bear:

Middleton Place staff recall that Ashley’s Sack posed interpretive challenges for many of the more veteran volunteer guides, who were more familiar with storylines emphasizing the accomplishments and refinement of the white Middletons. Some felt uncomfortable with direct discussions of slavery; others were overwhelmed by the emotional responses catalyzed by the object, which brought tears to many visitors’ eyes. Some volunteer guides complained that the sack, and the powerful reactions it engendered, distracted from the core mission of the tour: to highlight the wealth, political leadership, and cosmopolitanism of the white Middletons.

southernspaces.org

The sack is now on display at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. I think what happened to Ashley’s Sack is, in microcosm, how white Americans have so many problems discussing America’s twin founding sins—the extermination of the native inhabitants and the importation of millions of slaves to work the land.

On a more personal note, there’s a whole thriving industry of people who take old samplers, make charts out of them and then sell the charts so that you can stitch your very own reproduction sample. (You can even buy distress-dyed cloth to stitch your reproduction on!) They’re all samplers by white women and girls. There are a couple of extant samplers by black schoolgirls in the antebellum era, but they’re so rare the two I found are in museum collections and they aren’t charted. Blergh.

re: #329 Hecuba’s daughter

Or, alternately, while you were young and naive (as you put it), Townhall is purposely deceitful.

So there’s that.

During this morning’s appearance on Fox News Sunday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Trump “likes to take risks” in reference to why the administration thought it was a smart idea for Trump to invite Taliban leaders to America on the eighteenth anniversary of 9/11. The choice of dates created a huge pushback and the White House announced after this interview that they were delaying the meeting to a future date.

Wallace asked, “Who thought it was a good idea for the president of the United States to meet with Taliban leaders—who have the blood of thousands of Americans on their hands—just three days before 9/11?”

Wallace pressed it further, “But the Taliban has the death of thousands of Americans and it’s just three days before 9/11. No concerns about that? And I guess, my question is — you know, I can understand the [American] envoy talking to them, why does the president have to confer that status on them?”

As Trump’s former CIA Director Pompeo knows this, but still had the ass-kissing gall to say, “[Trump] is willing to take risks, if he believes he can deliver an outcome for the American people.”

Trump so badly wanted peace that he pursued it after two years of failing to force the Taliban to surrender through authorizing usage of all the DoD’s biggest toys, conducted the negotiations in secret so that his base wouldn’t chew his ass out for such, and then put the kibosh on the whole thing the moment the WH’s biggest warhawk said it was a bad idea. And he had so little faith in his appointed negotiators that he pushed to have the Taliban leadership flown to Camp David because he remains the only person he trusts to do anything in his administration.

By the way, I decided to check FR after the news broke to see how they were responding to the whole story about the Taliban negotiations.
