Other than Canada and Mexico, the Bahamas is the only other country I have ever visited. The people I met there were really nice. I’m sure some of it was because we were tourists, but even away from the resort the people were nice.

I spent a good month doing introspection about WHY I dreamt that. To this day I have no clue. And it creeps me out just thinking about it now.

It was the most amazing trip of my life. We saw incredible sights, we enjoyed good food and good wine, we really took the opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of a beautiful city and all that history. I will never forget that time. I’m looking forward to our next trip, which I believe will be Paris.

In a development I’ve always dreamed of but never thought I’d actually get to write about, an actor from The Room, the 2003 movie so awful it’s become a great cult classic film, has announced a bid for Congress.

Via the Texas Tribune’s Patrick Svitek, Daily Kos Election’s (okay, only my) new favorite Democrat in the whole country is Dan Janjigian, who was on Armenia’s two-man bobsledding team during the 2002 Winter Olympics shortly before his star turn as the drug dealer Chris R. (The character is only in one scene and just referred to as “Chris R.”) Janjigian was later played by Zac Efron in The Disaster Artist, the 2017 Oscar-nominated movie about the making of The Room.

On Thursday, Janjigian announced he was launching a bid for the Democratic nod against veteran GOP Rep. John Carter in Texas’ 31st Congressional District, a 54-41 Trump seat in Austin’s northern suburbs. Carter won an unexpectedly expensive contest just 51-48 last year against MJ Hegar, who is now running for the Senate, and he could be vulnerable again in a seat that GOP Sen. Ted Cruz carried only 50.5-48.4. Sadly, though, I doubt that this district has a large enough electorate of fans of trash cinema to give Janjigian much of an opening. Though maybe he could try raising money as Chris R. and see what happens.

Today the political environment has changed and we seem to live in an age of shameless political liars and bloviators from Johnson and Nigel Farage in the UK to Donald Trump in the US.

I maintain that contemporary societies are struggling to deal with the after effects of modernism, from the death-of-god, to instant messaging around the world (making the world much smaller.)

The detachment being engaged in holding accountable the outright sociopathic liars like Trump and Johnson is because their followers don’t really want to accept the unpleasant conclusions of the post modern world: that we are just animals on the way to our graves, that there is nothing magical, and no escape, that no group is special in this world, no one group are the “chosen ones”, that in the end all we have are each other to help us find our way to the next day.

Boris Johnson is threatening to sabotage the EU to make it cave in on a Brexit deal - or reject MPs’ plan to stop the UK crashing out of the bloc.

Most political dynasties in US politics were usually built upon a patriarch who either never held office or one who did but never achieved much, so that their sons could be seen as succeeding where their fathers didn’t. Mango Mussolini is going to be seen as a failure and none of his kids are ever going to be able to live that legacy down. The only one that has any hope is Barron because he’s too young to have been part of the whole spectacle beyond that of a bystander.

His response — that was a slippery slope. I finally chimed in challenging that position and pointing out it was reminiscent of the conservative attacks on Michelle Obama for promoting healthy eating for children.

Amusing aside: when I was young and naive, I got a job with an actuarial consulting firm; my background was strictly in mathematics and statistics with no legal training. I didn’t know what a regulation was and so used the term inappropriately in a memo — for which I was appropriately excoriated. I suspect the Townhall person deliberately used the term to mislead his audience.

Thankfully, aside from the judicial appointments made by the Short-fingered Vulgarian, most of the exec branch appointments either expire with his presidency or can be launched out via trebuchet by whoever replaces him. And his failure to get much of a legislative agenda passed means that he’s been forced to take actions via exec branch departments or EOs, all of which can be reversed by the next person in line.

The damage, however, it going to take a good while to fix. And some damage, such as the lost markets for our agricultural goods, may be gone for good.

There’s only so many hours in a day, so many days in a legislative session. If a significant Dem majority wanted to devote every working minute to undoing Trump appointments and regulations, they could get to maybe 10% of it. And they’d accomplish absolutely NOTHING else.

The only resolution to the corrupted Supreme Court is expanding it from 9 to 15 or more and packing it with pro-choice women so the religious nuts will be stopped cold in their tracks.

This is a good thread about how people don’t like hearing about the slaves on plantation tours.

I am fascinated by embroidered words on cloth. There are lots and lots of samplers embroidered by white girls out there. Post Civil War samplers can be purchased for several hundred dollars, framed and admired. (Antebellum samplers generally run in the mid-five figures.) These I am not interested in. It’s the heartfelt words embroidered on cloth with needle and thread that get my attention. Last night I happened upon (again) Ashley’s Sack, a sack given to a nine-year-old slave girl by her mother with a few things in it when the child was sold off. The words on the sack were embroidered by Ashley’s granddaughter, Ruth.

The sack was originally at a museum at Middleton Place, whose antebellum owners possibly also owned Ashley and Rose, but its historical weight was apparently too much for the museum to bear:

Middleton Place staff recall that Ashley’s Sack posed interpretive challenges for many of the more veteran volunteer guides, who were more familiar with storylines emphasizing the accomplishments and refinement of the white Middletons. Some felt uncomfortable with direct discussions of slavery; others were overwhelmed by the emotional responses catalyzed by the object, which brought tears to many visitors’ eyes. Some volunteer guides complained that the sack, and the powerful reactions it engendered, distracted from the core mission of the tour: to highlight the wealth, political leadership, and cosmopolitanism of the white Middletons.

The sack is now on display at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. I think what happened to Ashley’s Sack is, in microcosm, how white Americans have so many problems discussing America’s twin founding sins—the extermination of the native inhabitants and the importation of millions of slaves to work the land.

On a more personal note, there’s a whole thriving industry of people who take old samplers, make charts out of them and then sell the charts so that you can stitch your very own reproduction sample. (You can even buy distress-dyed cloth to stitch your reproduction on!) They’re all samplers by white women and girls. There are a couple of extant samplers by black schoolgirls in the antebellum era, but they’re so rare the two I found are in museum collections and they aren’t charted. Blergh.

A couple days ago, a “libertarian-lite” acquaintance posted on FB an attack on Kamala Harris from townhall.com alleging she proposed “regulating” meat consumption. The Trumpsters all too this as an opportunity to demonize Republicans. Several of his sane FB friends pointed out that her actual proposal had to do with dietary guidelines — not regulations. His response — that was a slippery slope. I finally chimed in challenging that position and pointing out it was reminiscent of the conservative attacks on Michelle Obama for promoting healthy eating for children.

Amusing aside: when I was young and naive, I got a job with an actuarial consulting firm; my background was strictly in mathematics and statistics with no legal training. I didn’t know what a regulation was and so used the term inappropriately in a memo — for which I was appropriately excoriated. I suspect the Townhall person deliberately used the term to mislead his audience.

Or, alternately, while you were young and naive (as you put it), Townhall is purposely deceitful.

So there’s that.

The choice of dates created a huge pushback and the White House announced after this interview that they were delaying the meeting to a future date.

Wallace asked, “Who thought it was a good idea for the president of the United States to meet with Taliban leaders—who have the blood of thousands of Americans on their hands—just three days before 9/11?”

Wallace pressed it further, “But the Taliban has the death of thousands of Americans and it’s just three days before 9/11. No concerns about that? And I guess, my question is — you know, I can understand the [American] envoy talking to them, why does the president have to confer that status on them?”

As Trump’s former CIA Director Pompeo knows this, but still had the ass-kissing gall to say, “[Trump] is willing to take risks, if he believes he can deliver an outcome for the American people.”

Trump so badly wanted peace that he pursued it after two years of failing to force the Taliban to surrender through authorizing usage of all the DoD’s biggest toys, conducted the negotiations in secret so that his base wouldn’t chew his ass out for such, and then put the kibosh on the whole thing the moment the WH’s biggest warhawk said it was a bad idea. And he had so little faith in his appointed negotiators that he pushed to have the Taliban leadership flown to Camp David because he remains the only person he trusts to do anything in his administration.
