My much, much loved psychiatrist took his own life. Some of these professions you would think would have a lower suicide risk for various reasons are actually elevated. Psychiatrists have some of the highest in the medical community, which already struggles with an inflated rate.

I have mixed feelings about free college for everyone.

Sure, free college made all the difference in the world to my family — but that’s because my parents went to college at a time when fewer than 25% of people did, and they needed it to prepare for Med school and Law school, but…

Building trades, health care and beauty and other personal care workers, 3/4 of restaurant staff, and another dozen or so of the highest-employment fields, a year of vocational school is plenty to make them good at their jobs. For retail workers or warehouse workers, high school should be enough.

Another 100K worth of education for EVERYBODY is probably not the most cost-effective way to improve people’s lives, or society at large.

I assume that even with free universities, everyone won’t be interested in pursuing higher education. For those who want to do so, they shouldn’t be saddled with huge debts which take decades to pay off.

A girlfriend of mine who graduated from university in 1998 is still paying off her school debt and it’s a huge amount. She’s just thankful that it won’t be passed down to her children.

When I said goodbye to Daisy this past Spring, it was after three very stressful weeks of ups and downs, doing everything possible to make her comfortable in the hopes that the every small improvement might BE THE ONE that meant she was turning the corner. Alas, it was not to be. But I was thankful for the 17 very happy years.

Half the people who are “interested in pursuing higher education” — it’s just because “isn’t that what people my age supposed to do?” Or because it can be a 4-year party. It’s nothing to do with how they’re going to earn a living. I don’t mind paying for public education for people whose goal is something that requires an education to do it well, but if high school were more rigorous, that should be enough. For a lot of jobs/careers, an extra 3 or 4 years of doing whatever it is they’re going to do, with that extra 3 or 4 years of income (10% of their lifetime earnings), will do more to enhance their lives and benefit society at large.

re: #28 plansbandc

This.

I was blocked from college due to extreme poverty as a child. Had I been wealthy enough to even qualify for a loan I would have gone, but that did not happen and never will.

That said, college should be available to everyone who qualifies for it. As it is now, we are regressing back to the pre-WW2 era where only the wealthy and connected can go. That will leave our economy and country behind in the XXI Century.

But for those who cannot or do not want to go to college, vocational/apprenticeship training should also be upheld as necessary to a functioning society and also provided for.

The “college for all” plans being floated would have been really nice when I was of an age to benefit from one of them, but they need to benefit everyone they can. I wish I was in a position to get that through Democratic candidates’ heads.

I keep thinking of college as a general term for any post high school education, but it would be good to bring that up to people like AOC. But I would also require that we either restructure middle and high school education so that they get more government/economics like I did back in the 80s, or that things like that are required to be taught no matter what type of education you get post high school.

Trump has been manipulating the markets since he was elected. I don’t remember such a level of volatility at any time in the past 40 years. Swings of 300/400 points in the dow on a daily basis are NOT normal. I can only assume someone in the family has been making money out of what is happening. Why else would trump be doing same.

There are so many things that affect your grades in school, high school and college, that are not college related, that I wouldn’t want to do that. I would definitely want to see something set up to better align what a student wants to do with their education. If you suck at higher math, you’re probably not going to make a very good physicist.

Because they all adopted the model of having the loans do the paying.
It’s all disconnected so no one feels it till it’s too late.

Just like how much car or house can you afford vs what’s the payment.
Same with health insurance

Conservatives either are the authoritarian, work for the authoritarian, or follow the authoritarian.

Case in point this week: the Taliban. It doesn’t matter whether Trump really invited them to Camp David or not. He said so, that’s all that matters.

When called out on the BS optics of inviting them (if he did) near the 9/11 catastrophe (anyone remember the outrage from wingnuts over Park 51), conservatives must try to find some or any justification for the utterance of the authoritarian, even bending history (or National Hurricane Center maps) to do so.

By next week, conservative followers will be absolutely convinced Ronald Reagan invited the Taliban to the Oval Office. There are multiple conservative mouthpieces working to ensure only the approved history is fed to the followers.

OK: I can get behind the concept (disgusting as it is) of negotiating with the Taliban (and/o the Afghan Government) to try to avoid minimize the bloody fiasco
which will inevitably explode on our final withdrawal from Afghanistan: but seriously!
You wanna do this, you do it good-old—fashioned Kissinger-style: dead quiet; under-the-table; in a neutral/obscure country; low-level at first: then make careful announcements about “impending developments”, first making sure everyone is on board (i.e. who is being paid off, how much, and for what) - and only THEN announcing “talks” .

re: #34 Anymouse 🌹🎃

I came from a poor family with six children and a father who abandoned the family right before I graduated from high school.
The divorce decree stipulated that he would pay college expenses for all of us.
He never paid a dime.

I paid for every bit of my bachelor’s degree on my own, even though it took me 10 years.
I also paid for the first quarter of my master’s degree but then got a teaching fellowship to pay for the rest.

Being wealthy back in the day had nothing to do with it.

Matter of fact, it has nothing to do with it now. Our granddaughter is attending a local northern Kentucky university, pursuing a nursing degree. She will not be graduating with a huge overwhelming debt.

FWIW, MrBWS is a high school graduate.
He was a gypsy non-union lineman for decades, then got the opportunity to get into the IBEW Albat program to move from Apprentice to Journeyman status.
Cost can be a thousand dollars or so, but the reward is a six-figure (or close to it) annual income on successful completion. (BTW…MrBWS didn’t have to pay for anything but the books, which he got on the cheap from Amazon, and he got the electrical engineering tutoring from me…yep…that was one of my university minors, plus what I learned for my Extra Class Amateur Radio License.)
And the benefits are beyond amazing.

Just saying that there are very affordable options out there.

As I posted elsewhere in a FB discussion: The cost of college at traditional 4 year institutions has exploded over the decades, far faster than inflation. When my sister attended Northwestern (on scholarship and commuting from home), tuition was 1800 annually; when her daughter attended 33 years later, tuition was 27,000. Inflation during the same period was about 409%; so to be equivalent, the tuition should have been 7,362. Our real problem is the skyrocketing expense; it’s ridiculous that price has so exceeded inflation. For the health of the nation, public universities (yes — I know — Northwestern is private) should be affordable — so that students can graduate without facing overwhelming debt. But colleges are not for working class or middle class families.

Colleges used to be for working class families, if they qualified for college. My uncle and aunt had six children before he died. His union (he was a finishing carpenter) paid for college for two of his children, vocational school for two more, one joined the Army, and the last chose to be a homemaker.

Regrettably the military did not do the same. My sister attempted college, but finances crushed her.

The reason college tuition has soared is the “greed is good” philosophy of conservatism coupled with Republicans everywhere they could defunding state schools and community colleges. It fits right in with Lee Atwater’s note that “you’re hurting white people, but you’re hurting black people more.”

That resulted in the state schools having to dramatically raise tuition to stay afloat.

The total cost hasn’t gone up by more than inflation; it’s that the percentage of that cost being covered by State appropriations has been slashed and now most of it comes from tuition.

Don’t worry, I’m sure if the media actually tries in earnest to look into this story, the excuse we’ll receive from the White House will be something about how “we” can’t afford to have all these refugees coming into the US, that if the people of the Bahamas want help they need to stay in place. When the reality is that the anti-immigrant faction of the WH are entertaining fantasies about how all these refugees will enter the US and then refuse to leave or even disappear to avoid being deported.

It Was Her Christian Duty To Shoot That Bitch
(Goes to Juanita Jean’s)

TL;DR version: A pastor’s wife didn’t like the t-shirt of a youth pastor’s wife. They took it out to the parking lot, where the pastor tried to calm down his wife. She ran to her car and grabbed a gun to shoot the youth pastor’s wife, the pastor tried to get her to give up the gun by praying with her, she fired the gun (but didn’t hit anyone). She’s in jail.

What gets me is all of these people are Apostolics, some of the most straitlaced church people in the land. Women are told to wear dresses and skirts only, no jewelry and can’t cut their hair *at all*, because they have this idea that if your hair is uncut, God has to honor your devotion by granting healing if you spread your uncut hair around. Uhm, as you might expect, there’s no objective evidence that uncut female hair has any specific healing properties.

I couldn’t tell from the website articles I looked at what the offending t-shirt had to say.

I agree with you 100%. The difference between the United States and the rest of the world (at least before we descended into this nightmare Mirror Universe) is that students here who did not do particularly well in high school are able to get into a college (affording it of course is another story) and their future options are based on college performance not high school. Community colleges, which should be free or perhaps with a minimal charge, offer students the opportunity to find themselves and a field of interest. And then they can transfer to other institutions once they have established themselves.

Especially when I was in law school, the stress level is too enormous to worry about whether having a bad day on ONE FINAL for a class could completely trash your GPA.

My parents paid for my college education, both times. I’m very lucky like that. I went to college right out of high school, lasted three semesters, I cared about skiing more than I did educating myself in those days. Didn’t return until seven years later, where I completed a B.A. in English with a History minor and made the honor roll (my GPA was 3.76).

I’m still working in the ski industry. Though I have a healthy habit of reading because of my time getting that degree, it hasn’t amounted to much since I got it. People say “you should be a teacher!” Thing is, I hate fuckin’ kids and couldn’t care less. Therein lies my problem with pursuing pedagogy.

I still like reading my 15 page paper on the literary criticism known as deconstruction. I actually had fun writing that.

Unless the instructor changed editions or went to a completely new book for the next semester, in which case you were stuck with expensive doorstops.

Been there, done that, got the degree (BFA in mass comm, Austin Peay, Clarksville, TN; 2001-2005), paying off the loans until the heat death of the universe (or another nine years, if I can hold onto my income-based repayment plan, which would waive the unpaid balance after that point).

I paid $212.50 for my last semester of college at UT Austin in spring 1984. My textbooks cost more than that.

University fees started going up significantly after that. When I went to my first semester of law school, it was $36/hour, then $48/hour for the second year and $75/hour for the last year. The rationale was that tuition had been too low for a long time and students had to have more skin in the game. As it turned out, I got grants that covered my tuition. For some reason, the government gave me a national defense grant to learn me some lawyering skillz. I took out $5,000 loans every year and lived off that money.

I just checked, my alma mater is charging $1,071.40/hour for law school now. In other words, just for tuition, you’d be sitting on a bill of $100,000-just for tuition. NOPE.

After the ski area closed Matchstick Productions - a local ski film house - took all the snow from the halfpipe and made this monster. You had to be towed into the jump with a snowmobile and make a slingshot move towards its ramp, where skiers were going about 70-75 m.p.h. It was a thing to see.

The transition (the lip of the ramp to the point where the slope *slopes* way down, where it’s safe to land) was a little over a hundred feet. Some of these guys were going 200+, and doing floating iron cross 1080s. One guy did a 180. He went off the jump, spun 180° and landed backwards, going highway speeds.
