Trump Says He Fired John Bolton, Bolton Says He Resigned. Let’s Get Ready to Rumble.

Politics • Views: 22,720

In the ongoing clusterfuck that is the Trump administration, warmonger’s warmonger John Bolton is the next one to run for the door marked “EXIT.” And of course, something is fishy about Trump’s announcement.

Trump tweeted around noon: “I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House. I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration, and therefore … I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning. I thank John very much for his service. I will be naming a new National Security Advisor next week.”

But just an hour before the announcement, the White House announced that Bolton would be appearing at a 1:30 p.m. news conference alongside Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. It seems unlikely Bolton would agree to show up after effectively being fired. If Bolton was on his way out as of Monday night, why did the White House press office not seem to know about it at 11 a.m. Tuesday?

Adding to the subplot is Bolton’s comments. His tweets Monday night and Tuesday didn’t indicate anything had changed, and shortly after Trump’s tweets, he chimed in by saying, “I offered to resign last night and President Trump said, ‘Let’s talk about it tomorrow.’ ”

This has been today’s episode of “Trump Lies About Everything.”

Speaking of Javanka, I’m waiting for the inevitable “insider scoop” from Maggie where she says that Ivanka and/or Jared was the one who convinced Donny to boot out the “warmonger” over the whole Taliban debacle. The implied meaning will be that Bolton’s disagreement with the meeting was the “real” reason for it’s collapse, and not because the whole thing was a rushed mess that would have been as “successful” as the Singapore “Summit.”

Yeah, it’s looking more and more like the usual story: Guy gets hired to great acclaim by Trump, proceeds to get beaten down as his every idea is trashed in favor of Donny’s brain droppings, and then he’s kicked out the front door the moment Donny needs a scapegoat for his latest fuckup.

Now that Bolton is finally realizing that he is just the latest in a long line of right wing marks Trump has personally fleeced and embarrassed I wonder if he is ready to launch his own public media onslaught against his former master. Probably not.

Bolton after all is still just basically another military-service-free chickenhawk ready to send other people and their kids to fight his little wars and grievances.

But one would think that there is just one tiny shred of human dignity stirring inside that cold dead husk that looks back at him in the mirror ready to fight an actual fight. After all, his own tough guy persona is on the line… the only thing that matters to the hard right wackos that are his colleagues and fellow travelers in evil.

Not human dignity but I bet Bolton is appalled at Trump’s damage to American power world-wide and his subservience to Putin. No lord of evil (especially not Cthulhu) would demean himself to work for a bully whose
goal in life is to earn the Nobel Peace Prize and that is Trump’s goal only because Obama — undeservedly — was awarded one. If Obama had not received it, Trump would not have cared.

I was wondering last night if Congress might call the former spy/asset that was in Russia to testify regarding Trump possibly being compromised. Conservatism is a religion. No matter who Trump picks, the GOP will fall behind that pick and justify it, because their prelate told them to. We saw it with throwing Ukraine under the bus in the GOP platform during the convention. Every person Trump has picked has had a full house of GOP politicians supporting that person. They were all behind Bolton. They were all behind HR McMaster before him. Why would they suddenly be different now?

Trump is awful. He’s got awful judgment and no character. Zero understanding and no competencies.
Bolton is awful. He’s got awful judgment and poor character. He has some knowledge.

Firing a guy who is somewhat knowledgeable to fill with yet another yes-man makes everything worse.

Firing Bolton to keep Bolton from first resigning because you need to make a point that you’re the boss again shows Trump is a fragile snowflake who needs to show primacy when the reality is he is flailing about.

Nothing Trump does here will keep the nation safe. Trump doesn’t put American national security first. His profits and self-enrichment and self-aggrandizement are his motivations, when racism and misogyny aren’t pushing him to impose racist/misogynistic policies.

People need to quit it with the idea that Trump is anti-war.

What’s he done with drone strikes alone should demonstrate he’s apathetic to casualties and perfectly fine with interfering in regional conflicts.

If he’s deal-making with US opponents, it’s not from a place of conscience…more likely from a personal hang-up on the idea that he’s uniquely good at forming beneficial personal relationships, plus fear of having to take responsibility for an actual engagement.

He dropped a MOAB on Taliban to claim that he’s doing more and killing more Taliban than predecessors.

What is lacking is any progress on any front. He just ended talks, and the quagmire continues with no easy exits.

The MOAB is why I think that Trump is the perfect crystal example of an individual who cannot differentiate aesthetics from reality. He’s literally always in reality TV mode, doing things strictly for optics.

Like the landing strip bombing in Syria, the story of “I bombed harder” seemed to be more important than any objective. I strongly suspect that botched SEAL raid had a similar assessment behind it: good presidential television, not sound strategy.

But the other half of this is the malice of what he’s able to get away with if it’s completely invisible—because we have a picture now of Trump, Mattis, and the Pentagon where “lethality” is an end unto itself is being elevated—which is why I keep bringing up drones. The shitheads, Trump foremost, have embraced the idea of just continuously firing shots at crowds, because it hovers below the line of bad optics but also gives the semblance of meaningful activity in the conflict.

It’s a different technology, but it’s all sounding a like Vietnam…we’re killing all these guys, that’s a win even thought there’s no other metrics.

And I hate to put it this way, but, I think what we’re watching is the military-industrial complex’s latest adaption, post-Vietnam, to keep conflict going. With Gulf War One we say turning war into a pageant work, but then it failed with Gulf War Two. Now they’ve moved on to experimenting with warfare that’s completely hidden from the nation conducting it, always at a subcritical level of attention.

Well, Trump’s 3 years older than Warren, and Sanders is 8 years older, so I’m not sure I’d say they’re in the same age range, exactly.

But, yeah, honestly - when Reagan was reelected at the age of 74, there was a LOT of talk about how old he was, especially after he gave a real “doddering old fart’performance at the first debate with Mondale. And now people want Sanders, who if elected would take office already older than Reagan was when he LEFT.

Of those 4, she is the youngest. Sanders is 78, Biden is 76, and Trump is 73. Warren is 70, she will be six months shy of her 72nd birthday if she takes the oath of office. That is, in my opinion, probably a bit too old to be taking the job. Warren would be the oldest person to assume the office (Trump was 70 when he took the oath of office and Reagan was a few weeks away from his 70th birthday).

Perhaps because they’ve done something.

Biden is the frontrunner because he’s a familiar name associated with our last president. The polls among Democrats state this, especially among African Americans.

Sanders ran in the last campaign.

Warren is the one doing the best at making a name for herself, and she started out in third place, behind those that had more name recognition. And don’t forget how much Trump has helped put her name in the spotlight.

Then we can talk about the idea that a women won’t win the election that some people have.

And as much as I don’t mind Biden, he hasn’t run nearly the campaign Harris, Beto, or Pete have, and yet he’s still comfortably ahead of them.

People can’t remember what happened two weeks ago, much less 10 months ago.

With one exception: The impeachment of the President. The memories of that are long. Despite his acquittal, impeachment—a convenient shorthand for all of his despicable qualities—would hang around Donald Trump’s neck all the way to Election Day. And he would be stained forever in history, his just deserts.

I think you mean lower ceiling, but yeah. Support for him has almost nothing to do with his performance. The Bushes had high highs and low lows because not that many people actually liked them. They did a pretty good job at a crucial time and so were very popular, but then when things went south they didn’t really have much to fall back on. GWB was more personally popular than his old man, but still.

Trump, OTOH, has failed to deliver on anything he promised, apart from treating nonwhites like shit. But then, that’s what they worship him for.

re: #175 Blind Frog Belly White

I think you mean lower ceiling, but yeah. Support for him has almost nothing to do with his performance. The Bushes had high highs and low lows because not that many people actually liked them. They did a pretty good job at a crucial time and so were very popular, but then when things went south they didn’t really have much to fall back on. GWB was more personally popular than his old man, but still.

Trump, OTOH, has failed to deliver on anything he promised, apart from treating nonwhites like shit. But then, that’s what they worship him for.

Yes sorry I did mean ceiling.

re: #142 DangerMan

just to pick a nit:

haig - “As of now, I am in control here, in the White House”

That event was featured during a Season 1 episode of The Americans

Phillip & Elizabeth’s boss believed this was the opening move in Haig’s military coup, and they ordered Phillip to kill George Schultz. (Phillip disobeyed orders; he thought he and Elizabeth understood better than the Center did).

Also Nina’s first big plot point; she went to a bar where congressional aides and young WH staffers hung out so she could listen to them argue, and was able to report back to her boss that no, it was just clumsy media management, no coup, and the VP was on his way back to town and had everybody’s full support.

And Phillip’s first big intel score from his friendship with Stan — being able to report that it was some homegrown crazy, nothing political, many hours before that was officially released to the media. Being able to assure the home office that the US gov’t wasn’t going to pin this on the USSR.

Yeah. When I was in college I lived in a co-op. It was cheap, we had to do 4 hours of work a week (mine was breakfast prep, other people cooked, cleaned and we had a person in charge of our beer machine and another in charge of Friday bar). I enjoyed it but it wasn’t for everyone.

Buttigeg imo has the opposite problem. He needs more experience but I can hardly blame him after we elected our first President with no elected experience since Ike and no experience with any government.

And there’s the problem about bringing age into a discussion of who should be President.

You have to be at least thirty-five.

In the near future, assuming Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continues to be a good representative (or becomes a senator), running at age thirty-five she’ll have over a decade of experience in governance.

Most people who run for Congress don’t start out as young as she did. They kind of take the path I did (sans running for Congress)—starting in a local office, building up to a state office, then Congress. That takes decades.

Someone on the young end is very likely to have little or no government experience, and we can see how that works out with Trump.

Meanwhile, in Iran:

An Iranian woman detained for dressing as a man to sneak into a stadium to watch a football match has died after setting herself on fire upon learning she could spend six months in prison, semi-official news outlets reported Tuesday.

The self-immolation death of a 29-year-old known as Sahar Khodayari has become a hashtag trend across social media in the Islamic Republic.

It also comes as FIFA is working with Iranian authorities to overcome a ban on women entering stadiums for men’s games, a ban in place since the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. FIFA wants the issue resolved before Oct. 10, when Iran — the top-ranked team in Asia — hosts its first home World Cup qualifier against Cambodia.

Most presidents (and even presidential nominees) don’t often have local experience. Obama served in the Illinois legislature before the Senate, GWB, Clinton, Reagan, and Carter were all governors with no other elected offices. GHWB was all over federal government positions. Nixon and Kennedy started off in Congress together.

I think you have to go back to LBJ, who served on a local school board to find a president who previous held a local office.

Yeah, you’re right. He had a two year term as Arkansas AG. And Carter served in the State Senate in Georgia for 4 years.

In the modern era, presidents usually have fairly short political careers, relatively speaking. Which probably has to do with term limits in executive offices. For comparison’s sake, Pelosi has been in Congress since 1987.

It’s about the cut-off date for joining the PeeWee Leagues. By the time they’re 7 or 8, kids born at the “right” time of year have a year more experience than kids born at the “wrong” time of year, they’re more grown and more capable and get more starting time. The follow-on effects of that experience just increase as they work their way through the kids’ games until it comes time to try out for school teams.

Democrats are vastly outnumbered in my area (like 100-1), and most of them are elderly, and overall, they generally do not vote and when they do, they are likely to vote for republicans because they are Blue Dogs.

Since we have closed primaries, I would be throwing away the opportunity to vote in any primary should I change parties.

Warrick township official asks on Facebook if person with Middle Eastern name can be trusted (Evansville, Ind. Courier-Journal, more at the link)

The entire GOP seems to want to run on an explicitly racist platform:

NEWBURGH, Ind. — A local elected official recently posted on Facebook about the Middle Eastern name of an airline mechanic accused of sabotaging a flight, asking why anyone would “dare trust” a person with such a name.

Debbie Reid is a member of the Ohio Township Advisory Board in Warrick County. She has been on the board five years.

The post on her personal Facebook page was about Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani, who worked for American Airlines in Miami and was arrested in July. He was accused of tampering with an aircraft amid a labor dispute.

Reid posted a Fox News report about Alani’s case and asked: “DO WE DARE TRUST ANYONE WITH A NAME LIKE THIS ANYMORE???”

The Facebook post isn’t publicly visible on Reid’s page, but the Courier & Press was shown a screenshot of it, as well as some other posts she recently has made.

Reid hung up when the Courier & Press called to ask her about the Facebook post. She did not answer subsequent calls.

On what basis is Trump planning something like this; seems like its a local matter.

He has no authority in this area, though that would certainly please Stephen Miller and every other poor-hating conservative.

I will not give up my vote.

This is why in my frequent rants about motherfucking Republicans, I often put in the explicit definition of ‘motherfucking Republican’ as anyone who votes R in contested general elections. I could not possibly care less about party registration.

Expect this, which started in the fever-swamps of Christian YouTube conservatives a couple weeks ago, to make it to FOX News Channel soon.

https://saraacarter.com/leprosy-could-be-the-next-public-health-crisis-to-hit-los-angeles/ (Goes to Sara A. Carter’s blog. Ms. Carter is a FOX News contributor). This is another case study in how the propaganda farm of right-wing fear works.

The claim is that “liberal California” is failing to contain an ancient disease.

The report she cites is from Medscape (linked in her blog post and conveniently cherrypicked) which says there were 187 cases of leprosy in the entire United States since 1973. It notes that people from Mexico are more likely to be diagnosed with the disease, thus adding to conservative racism in addition to fear-mongering.

Leprosy has never been eliminated, and is treatable with simple antibiotics if caught early.

Pointing to foreigners as “diseased” is one tool of the fascist.

Very true. If I were younger, sleazier and more energetic, I’d seriously consider pulling a long con on the deplorables. Make a living by telling them the lies they want to hear for 20 or so years, and gradually work the fairy tales over to the conclusion that sexual prowess in middle aged conservative man can best be demonstrated by fucking a running wood chipper into submission.

Very little in yet… the results all say less than 1%, but also showing 50,000 total votes, which actually should be something like 25% of the vote total when it’s all counted. McCready (D) ahead by just a hair, but this is all early voting, I think, and the edge of Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) that’s in NC-9 hasn’t reported yet.

Why is homelessness in CA rising? Simple math:

Rate of population increase > rate of housing stock increase.

Also, the chart she posted makes clear who the trend started under. It’s not like black unemployment was flat or rising before 2017.

Exactly

Of those 4, she is the youngest. Sanders is 78, Biden is 76, and Trump is 73. Warren is 70, she will be six months shy of her 72nd birthday if she takes the oath of office. That is, in my opinion, probably a bit too old to be taking the job. Warren would be the oldest person to assume the office (Trump was 70 when he took the oath of office and Reagan was a few weeks away from his 70th birthday).

I’m 65 right now and I hope I’m as young as Warren when I reach her age.

NBC has called the NC House district three race for Republican Greg Murphy.

US House district NC-9 is still too-close-to-call (why is that when the GOP blatantly tried to steal an election), with 50.5% of precincts reporting.

D Dan McCready 50.4% 69,150
R Dan Bishop 49% 67,165
L Jeff Scott 0.4% 502
G Allen Smith 0.2% 261

re: #385 Belafon

I’m curious when North Carolina’s redistricting will occur and what those maps will look like.

They are required to have the redistricting complete by September 18.

The NC House and Senate have started on the project.

North Carolina legislators who are redrawing dozens of General Assembly districts that judges deemed illegal partisan gerrymanders turned Monday to considering district lines generated by a key expert for those who successfully sued over the maps.

The House and Senate redistricting committees met to figure how they would enact new boundaries for the 2020 election by a court-mandated Sept. 18 deadline. Last week, a three-judge panel declared Republican mapmakers violated the state constitution by manipulating districts created in 2017 to help elect a maximum number of GOP candidates and make it nearly impossible for Democrats to win majorities.
