Some More News: Bret Stephens, Bedbugs, and the Illusion of Civility [VIDEO]

The right wing’s “civility” scam is one of my pet peeves, so I laughed, I cheered, and I sagely nodded my head as I watched this episode. All at the same time.

In today’s episode, we discuss New York Times columnist Bret Stephens, who is definitely a bedbug, and how he and conservative figures like him weaponize the illusion of Civility in order to peddle their racist, uncivil, bedbuggian beliefs.

Civility is a way that the establishment tamps down criticism and threats to their power, especially when it is questioned in unconventional ways.

Fuck that.

re: #291 The Ghost of a Flea

The attempt to present post-9/11 as a period of unity is itself telling, since reactionaries and revanchists immediately leveraged the feeling of common grief to coerce people into compliance.

I keep saying it, but like the invocation of “civility” the invocation of 9/11/01 is a bad faith exercise for many of these people.

The whole “unity” business is nostalgic bunk, as what existed in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 was not so much “unity” as shellshock. If there was “unity,” it was that a group that is first shocked and then angered in unison. The shelf-life of that “unity” was shorter than the life of a Mayfly, as once the shock had passed and the anger taken over, everybody was blaming everybody else for the deaths and destruction of 9/11.

“Civility” is when you tell your opponents that, this being the anniversary of 9/11, there’s no important business planned in the legislature that day, and then you pull a ‘surprise’ vote to override a veto.

I decided not to do political posts on FB today, but boy, is it tough. I mean, ON HIS WAY TO a 9/11 memorial event at the Pentagon, Trump tweets out an attack on the media.

Then I see the video Giuliani posts, promising to crush free speech and dissent - on 9/11.

Then we find out that, OF COURSE, the idea of having the NOAA release the “correction” statement came from Trump.

Then I read that the NCGOP pulled a surprise vote in the legislature after reassuring Democrats that there was nothing on the schedule, so they could override a veto they couldn’t override with the full body voting.

And, honest to god, if Mrs. FBW says to me, ONE MORE TIME, “Why are you surprised?”, I’m gonna shoot steam out of my ears!

There’s an entire abandoned subdivision at the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant in Elwood that is used for just that sort of thing.

I know because I was a participant in a state-wide joint exercise there in the early ’90s.

re: #13 Eclectic Cyborg

It’s also Republican voters believing anything Republicans say.

The key here is ‘belief’. I was thinking about the Bolton/Trump situation, and the shambles that is Trumpian “foreign policy”. Time after time, frustrated non-Trumpkins say, “Imagine if Obama had done this! Republicans would have impeached him before lunch!” And of course Trumpkins all praise whatever it was as a genius move.

I thought about it - Trump’s talking about cutting sanctions on Iran to encourage them to meet with us, and he’s said he’d meet with no preconditions. “Imagine if Obama had…” Well, you know where I’m going with that. So why do Trumpkins think it’s okay for Trump to do? It’s not quite as simple as ‘whatever Trump does is good’, though it’s close.

No, these jaspers are CONVINCED that Trump is a strong leader, a brilliant negotiator, who wrings concessions out of our opponents that Obama could never dream of! Now, obviously, none of that has happened. Trump rattled his saber at NK, then did a 180, and now he’s making concessions that nobody would have dreamed of, bringing KJU onto the word stage as an equal, and all the while NK continues to build nukes and ICBMs.

This is, objectively, the WEAKEST performance by a US President against an adversary in our history. But because “Trump is a strong leader, a brilliant negotiator”, this MUST be a great deal!

Their belief that Trump is strong where Obama was weak means they praise diplomatic defeats as brilliant victories. If Trump makes a deal with Iran, it will almost certainly be pretty much the same as the old deal, but his followers will love it as much as they hated the same deal from Obama. More likely, it will give even more concessions to Iran, and be praised as EVEN BETTER than the original.

This is why Trump loved Bolton, BTW. Trump is the consummate bully, all bluster and puffery, but faced with a real fight, he backs down and cuts the same deal he could have had before, if not worse, in order to be able to sign something in front of the cameras. Bolton, OTOH, wants us to start the same way, but then go to war to grind our enemies into the dust. He never caught onto the “bluster-then-capitulate” method of diplomacy.

I hate this bulkshit. If God was really judging us, don’t you think he would have stepped in with some smiting when our forefathers committed genocide against Native Americans and brought slaves from Africa?

They do not really believe any of this shit, they are just spouting it because they know that their target audience will lap it up and keep the donations coming to help them “combat sin” and keep our country safe from God’s ongoing wrath.

I disagree — most of them really do believe this — they believe if you haven’t been saved, the Lord will smite you; only those who worship according to their practices can avoid harm and are superior to all other humans that walk this earth. After all most Southern plantation owners were devout white Protestants.

re: #92 DangerMan

[Chief legal counsel at Uber, Tony] West said Uber could pass the ABC test because drivers aren’t “core” to its business. “Under that three-part test, arguably the highest bar is that a company must prove that contractors are doing work ‘outside the usual course’ of its business,” West said. “Several previous rulings have found that drivers’ work is outside the usual course of Uber’s business, which is serving as a technology platform for several different types of digital marketplaces.”

Seems like a load of outmoded transportation creature waste product.

They could have made the argument if they had made an app that could be tailored to different businesses in the “gig economy.” But Uber is its only app, driving is its only business and they scrape money from drivers. Uber can bite me.

Great article here from TIME on how students are taught about 9/11 in schools

And here’s an excerpt that will make you bang your damn head on the wall:

Some non-profits and educational organizations offer free online resources that help fill that void, especially for the youngest students. Teachers to whom TIME spoke mentioned the 9/11 Memorial Museum’s interactive timeline; the museum also offers a range of educational resources, all the way down to kindergarten-appropriate lesson plans that talk about the search-and-rescue dogs and emergency preparedness. Other resources include sites like Teaching Tolerance, which produces online guidelines for educators on debunking negative stereotypes about Muslims.

But flexible curricula can also introduce a different kind of obstacle for teachers. For example, Turner says she’s gotten pushback from parents for making a point to tell her students that the Islamist extremists who hijacked the planes on 9/11 don’t represent the views of all Muslims, and she’s had students who have come to the subject believing conspiracy theories that 9/11 didn’t really happen or was orchestrated by the government. Stoddard says her experience is not uncommon, as other teachers have told him they are increasingly having to field questions from students about conspiracy theories.

The original intent of uber and the other gig economy apps may have been for what we traditionally thought of as independent contractors. But it has evolved in a way that doesn’t compute. You can’t just do a delivery or two or a ride here and there anymore.

That said, in a general sense, I’m not very keen on the new California law. Particularly the “central to business” test. Lots of attorneys, for example, rely on contract lawyers to make appearances or ghostwrite motions/briefs. If those contract attorneys are suddenly employees, it’s going to cause a lot of havoc. It’s also going to completely fuck up the truck driving industry and the idea of owner/operators.

One goober claims that firing a magazine down a tank barrel will “jam the gun.” Others think shotgun slugs will break the tracks, obviously only from close range. Some even believe in the old movie trick of jumping on top to toss a molotov cocktail down the hatch.* With the traitors standing in front of 120mm barrels, running up on the tracks, and trying to jump on top, the task of eradicating their stupid asses will be greatly simplified.

*With millions of soldiers fighting tens of thousands of tanks over the last century, this has probably happened once or twice. Just as likely that thousands of heroic but gullible types have died trying.

The loss of an unprecedented and ridiculously large fraction of jobs to automation and outsourcing is going to have all kinds of ripple effects. I can’t imagine a sector of the economy that isn’t going to get completely upended.

The important point is to make sure the corrupt and important pieces of shit in charge of the status quo don’t end up as the corrupt and important pieces of shit running the new world order.

Something else they don’t really think about is that both the Revolution and the Civil War had organized governments behind it who had organized militias/militaries. It wasn’t random terrorist cells shooting up government buildings. Or taking over the local Federal Express…

i’d guess you probably know the rules better than most

my experience has been to distill the irs 18 (or whatever) point test down to this:

- if someone tells you what to do, when to do it, and/or how to do it, youre (likely) an employee

- if you have a phone number, business cards, advertise or otherwise solicit business, have multiple clients or sources of income, can hire someone to do work on your behalf, etc, then youre (likely) not an employee

employee vs ‘contractor’ is not something you and the other party negotiate and decide - even with an explicit contract. rather it’s based on the actuality of how the power of the relationship plays out

w/r/t uber, start with a simple question: can drivers set their own rates with passengers? can they even negotiate them with ‘uber central? i dont think so in either case.

Weren’t all the crimes committed by the Nazis blessed by their courts? Our judiciary has been totally infested with Federalist Society judges; we can no longer count on any branch of the government to protect our rights. The House has little power to enforce anything without the cooperation of the Senate or the Department of (In)Justice or the judiciary. Our only hope is a great victory in 2020 but given the refusal of the GOP to protect our elections (and the sociopathy of 10s of millions of our fellow citizens) we may be deprived of that opportunity.

In this era of Republican fascism, purely procedural decisions aren’t really acceptable.

Jesus is dead

Jeff Fenholt — best known for playing the title character in the original Broadway theater production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” — has died.

Law enforcement sources tell us Jeff died Tuesday, only 5 days before his 69th birthday. We’re told Fenholt had recently been battling some health issues and was found dead at his home. Jeff’s death is not being investigated under suspicious circumstances.

Jeff famously played Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera, “Jesus Christ Superstar,” which opened on Broadway in October 1971 and played at the Mark Hellinger Theatre for a widely successful run of more than 700 performances.

Jeff was also embroiled in controversy over his involvement with the English heavy metal band, Black Sabbath. Jeff claimed he was a singer in the band for a few months in 1985, and says the band used several of his melodies for their album, “Seventh Star,” though he was not credited.

However, original Sabbath member Tony Iommi never confirmed Jeff was in the band … and the official line from Black Sabbath is that Jeff merely “tried out” for a spot in the group.

Jeff also gained notoriety as a Christian evangelist, and he says he made the conversion after becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol after the end of ‘JCS’ on Broadway.

Jeff was 68.

People made fun of this in the comments about how no one wants to work for the administration, but it’s more sinister than that. It’s basically further consolidating roles and power into a narrowing handful. It’s a step away from Stephen Miller, National Security Head, or Ivanka Trump, Commerce Secretary.

The bit about how Epstein was playing out a personal fantasy by having smart guys entertain his eugenic sex fantasies is a thought I’ve been struggling to articulate for weeks.

I keep talking about how power and wealth put you in a position to never here “No.” This applies to when they fund “science” and “research”: ultimately their interest is aesthetic and vain in ways that contradict the skepticism required to be empirical, so they’re going to both fund quacks and uncritically pursue wacky pie in the sky stuff that sounds grandiose. The point is their self-image and sense of power, not actually helping people.

…which is pretty much what we’re watching on billionaire social media. Jeff Bezos could do productive shit with his Smaug horde, but space travel is exciting and speaks to a kind of basic-bitch loftiness of purpose. It’s why they can hang out at Davos and talk about saving the world from climate change—a very publically-acceptable, sounds-good activity to perform—but be incapable of considering that it might not be a for-profit venture, to the point that they talk down to people that point that out.

This is why philanthropy is deeply fucked; even if their priorities are moral (no guarantee) they still might not be what generally needs a fucking ton of money thrown at it.

The MIT Media lab has been a flake and woo magnet for a long time. Long ago I briefly talked with a student that had some kind of connection there, and he was a total flake on all technical issues. I.e., at the having no respect for the idea of natural laws that you can’t repeal with a glowing press release level. IMO that’s the kind of crap that has to be taught to anyone bright enough to get into MIT.

This Epstein shit changes the story from flake factory to ‘holy shitballs, a rich sociopath is getting his vanity eugenics projects acted on’.

I wonder if Peter Thiel will manage to keep his disgusting pet science projects secret forever. Probably not. I’m sure they exist.

Ahh.. the common refrain for those who are explicitly white, explicitly part of the a plurality with overreaching power, and those have the overwhelming, personality-defining sense of Entitlement.

Philanthropy is also deeply fucked because it strongly reinforces the idea that the plutocrats are the rulers who determine what exists in society by choosing what to fund and what not to fund. Especially in relation to science and the arts. See also VC tech culture, where making money is the goal, but determining what exists by being the ultimate deciders of everything because $$$ is still the game.

Some even believe in the old movie trick of jumping on top to toss a molotov cocktail down the hatch.*

You don’t throw the molotov down the hatch, you throw it onto the back deck in an attempt to set the engine on fire. The Abrams has a fire extinguisher.

If one of the top hatches is open there’s a guy pointing a GPMG at you so trying to thrown a molotov down the hatch would be risky.
