A team of Trump administration officials toured a California facility once used by the Federal Aviation Administration this week as they searched for a potential site to relocate homeless people, according to three government officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private tour.
President Trump has directed aides to launch a major crackdown on homelessness in California, spurring an effort across multiple government agencies to determine how to deal with sprawling tent camps on the streets of Los Angeles and other cities, officials said.
Trump is expected to visit California on Tuesday and Wednesday. One administration official with knowledge of Trump’s visit to California said there were discussions about an announcement related to California’s growing homeless problem next week, but a second official said that any decision could be premature and that it was not on the current schedule for the trip.

Did I say they needed no regulation? I’m saying the idea behind Uber and ride sharing is very sound. No offense but by your own admission, you’re not urban bound a lot. It can be very handy to use a mobile app to get a ride especially if it’s a rainy or cold day. Convenience is very important to consumers. They need to treat their employees much better but ride sharing is something I’m fine with.

There’s been a controversy in Alaska over a young woman who was disqualified after winning her race in a swim meet—because of the way her school-issued (and unaltered) swimsuit fit on her. Apparently a judge thought the young woman was wearing the suit “immorally.” Or some such. Yesterday, the Alaska School Activities Association reversed the disqualification, after an enormous hooraw.
Amazingly, it was not the young woman herself, her family or her school who brought the issue, but a coach at a different high school who was upset at the double standard. Apparently swimming is only proper for skinny pasty white young women or something.
Here’s a CNN article talking more about the issue and getting the perspective of the mother of the young woman. Mom thinks the swimsuit model reflects a 1950s view of women and doesn’t reflect modern muscular female bodies.
Oh, and by the way, let’s not forget the name of the official who made the original ruling. Her name is Jill Blackstone and she’s accused of targeting the young woman and her younger sister over the last year. *scowl*

We actually have taxis here (and Uber if you have cell service).
Treating their employees better is only one part of the Uber puzzle. If you’re in a wreck as a passenger in an Uber driver’s car, the car insurance company can deny a claim because the insurance was fraudulently obtained (as a private vehicle and not as a commercial livery service).
Uber is fraught with assaults, robberies, and rapes because they studiously avoid doing background checks on drivers. That doesn’t mean taxi companies don’t have the same, but they do the checks and weed criminals out for the most part.
It would be impossible for Uber to stay in business if they were required to follow the same laws as livery companies. All they are doing is avoiding taxes (unemployment, employer portion of social security, operating permits, &c).
Avoiding taxes and regulation is the model. (And assaulting women in their corporate offices, allegedly.)

That is true. It’s frustrating. As I’ve said, my Dad drove for awhile. They definitely ripped him off but at the same time, there’s a demand for it. I’ve never had to wait too long for an Uber. It proves more useful than cabs do in the burbs.

I’m just saying as someone who is out in the city a lot, quickly finding a ride and being able to use your phone to trace it can be helpful especially on a wild night. I agree completely with what’s being said but at the same time, I’m at a distinct disadvantage as someone who doesn’t drive. Ride sharing makes my life easier.

The content of this press release is very concerning as it compromises the ability of NOAA to convey life-saving information necessary to avoid substantial and specific danger to public health and safety. So Germany tried to crack down on this sort of pseudo-entrepreneurship model. It involved delivery people, for UPS or TNT and especially people delivering frozen foods. They had to wear company livery, drive trucks (often leased from the company) painted with the company logo, drove fixed routes and set rates but were considered “contract labor” and “free-lance workers”.
One restaurant even tried to get away with “renting” tables to its free lance waiters who then “purchased” the food from the kitchen and re-sold it to the customers, eating the losses if the customers walked out on it or sent it back…

I’m off to Denver in the morning to have my car serviced after it was pummeled near to death by softball-size hail.
As such, I will be missing from here. I also need to take a break from political commentary here for a while. I don’t know whether that will be a few days or a few months, but the open despite for my position about Twitter and Uber makes me feel as though I am not welcome here.
I will still read, as this is an important place to learn things I cannot learn from my completely conservative controlled local media. I presume the commentary from a purity pony isn’t necessary though.

That said, criticism of a particular behavior is not a blanket condemnation of a person. It does not mean you are unwelcome. I do not dislike you. I do not think that your contributions to this community are without value. It is difficult to convey tone in writing, so please accept that this is not being typed in an angry way. There are subjects where I have found your comments and behavior to other Lizards to be hurtful or infuriating. This is not one of them, this was just irritating at a point where my patience was running thin.
I will apologize in turn. I should refrain from commenting when I’m already edgy from events IRL and the constant onslaught of appalling news that has dominated this infrastructure week. I should not have echoed the phrase ‘purity pony’ since it has a weight of connotation that is out of proportion to the issue at hand.

One of the hardest things to convey in writing is tone. The same sentence can mean multiple different things depending on HOW it is spoken. I try to be as clear as possible with my writing but I am sure there are times I come across in a way I don’t mean to.

The problem is that we expected oversight when we got our blue wave…..and the oversight didn’t happen. Everything was either slow walked or simply ignored. No hearings yet on Cohen and his claims of Trump corruption and pay offs and we have had MONTHS to do that. No hearings expanding on the Mueller report whichever Pelosi has let die on the vine. They text talking about an maybe sort impeachment investigation, but nothing really scheduled. This is not to what we voted for, and it was inevitable that some people would wonder if bad faith is involved. Jesus…it’s crossed my mind once or twice and I’m not a conspiracy type.

That’s what I mean by the fear of bold stances and effective messaging. When has mealymouthed, muddled messaging ever helped a candidate? The Dems who took red districts (e.g. Katie Porter) were also willing to take stands.
Everything I’ve ever observed re human nature says that even people who disagree with you are more likely to respect you when you hold fast to your principles as opposed to dithering. No one respects, admires, or roots for a ditherer, and American culture as a whole can’t process nuance. Fence-sitters/swing voters in particular are far more likely to gravitate toward strong personalities who channel their frustrations with the system.

Part of the problem here is that there are so many criminal acts and so many potential avenues for prosecution, that you can’t/shouldn’t do X because that could preclude Y, and Y might be faster but X is more comprehensive.
Impeachment is underway per Nadler. They’re doing the initial steps. They’ve been doing the due diligence, but where the Dem leadership has fallen short is that they are waiting for critical mass, but aren’t willing to help get us to critical mass by speaking consistently on this.
Cohen’s been interviewed by NY prosecutors, which is bad news for Trump. That’s state charges that are not pardonable by Trump.
Could Democrats be doing all this faster? Absolutely. I’m a fan of good and fast, rather than perfect and slow since the latter would result in Trump sticking around beyond 2020 (because he’s got a solid chance of reelection due to the same factors that got him in 2016).

So I missed this yesterday, and it explains why there was so much talk about ectopic pregnancies yesterday in my timeline.
I mean….have they seen what happens every single time any remotely prominent Dem tries to actually call them out? Obama was pilloried by the entirety of the media for calling out Fox. Dems were crucified for not wanting to go onto Fox for a ‘debate’. Every time someone tries, it’s met with united contempt in a way that the GOP never receives, and even if Dems try to persist through it, they end up paying a price for it rather than successfully ‘working the refs’.
The entire fucking playing field is uneven and we’re never fucking allowed to use any strategy the GOP uses because only they’re allowed to do anything ever, they’re the only valid party in this country according to our political atmosphere, and no matter how valid the complaint we have is, it’ll always be met with contempt, derision, and calls of treason.
The problem is that Democrats don’t work the refs. We think they should act like adults, concerned citizens of the country, and do their jobs. And when they don’t, we get people like Beto and Pelosi (and others, they are just the most recent) say “Why aren’t you doing YOUR job?” And that hurts their feelings. Too many media people prefer to be told what to do, and the GOP does that.

As a long time dog-lover and on-and-off dog owner, this is all too true. Their taste in food or personal spaces aside, they’re excellent judges of character. If someone cannot get a single dog to like them, they’re not to be trusted. Even my mom, who is scared of dogs and had to re-learn to be around them, had the instant adoration of almost every dog our family owned, much to her consternation.

Dr Kendzior’s expertise is solid, but narrow. She specialized in the kleptocracies of the Former Soviet Union(FSU). She has been very effective in calling out the similarities between the FSU and the Trump Administration.
But she has not yet called out the differences. And, I think that is due to the current narrowness of her expertise. I have great faith that as she widens her knowledge and understanding, her views may modify.
Additionally, the reality show/psycho drama of the Trump Administration has exacted a psychic toll on a lot of people, including her. And I do hope that Trump is sanctioned for this.
I am writing up something on one additional point where I think she is correct and will post it shortly.
