The President revealed today that he fired National Security Advisor John Bolton not because of the recent Taliban situation, but because Bolton had angered the North Korean leader by suggesting the U.S. attempt the “Libyan model” to deal with Little Rocket Man. #LSSC #Monologue #Colbert

So in other words… Bolton was merely acting like Bolton away does. It takes a truly incompetent leader to hire someone you know is going to recommend only one avenue of action for any given circumstance. Bolton has always without fail had a reflex action recommending dropping bombs. Lots of them. Everyone knows this.

For Trump to know this and hire him anyway reveals a lot about his leadership. It is all a sham. Every single hire, every single policy recommendation from advisors is just a secondary afterthought towards Trump’s desire for a personality-cult led world. Trump wants a world led by himself, Putin, Kim Jong Un, and various other personality cult hucksters, gangsters, and monsters. These are the only leaders he admires, the ones who oppose democracy, can command at will and demand complete subservience.

Bolton was just another sideshow. Just another toady to Trump’s backalley thug. Just another green-leotard henchman to Trump’s 60s-era Riddler. Try getting that image out of your head. I wish I could. The next hire will also be a sideshow. The real policy is whatever gives Trump more legitimacy to move towards becoming another Mao, another Kim Jong, another Putin.

This is what is driving white nationalist/racist GOP agenda. Increasing diversity and whites are a declining demographic across the nation.

Right wing extremists make this sound like it’s a bad thing.

Angry white guys think this is Armageddon or the casus belli for a race war or something. They’ve said as much. They can’t stand miscegenation and don’t want to allow minorities to have and enjoy the rights that white guys have always been afforded.

From the discussion in the last thread…

One point that I agree with Dr Kendzior is that Trump is in the position of Julius Ceaser and facing the same choice.

That is, the Trump Administration is facing a date where they will either keep power and protect themselves or lose and be called to account for their lawless behavior.

Unlike the Bush II Administration, the Trump Administration is posturing and pressing this issue rather than backing down. I believe that David Frum pointed this out in a somewhat cryptic tweet back in 2017.

I think that Dr Kendzior is, like many, deeply worried about this. Particularly when looking at behavior by parts of his party, such as in North Carolina, by McConnell, and in the Supreme Court.

Unfortunately, I think that we are now in the position of having to play it out. I personally do not see impeachment as some easy silver bullet. We are going to have to go through the fight.

A taco is almost always finger food. The cheese is grated and not melted, and it’s crunchy (unless it’s a soft taco, but it’s still finger food).

A good burrito is something you could eat with your hands but it’s gonna be messy. Better on a plate. Full of melted cheese and other gooey goodness.

There’s no way these two food items belong in the same branch of the food taxonomy.

“What does it say that the conservatives are nicer to me? I’m a serious lefty but they are so — I understand why people on the right called them godless — I mean, it’s like, I didn’t think the left was as mean as the right, they are.”

It says that conservatives and the left are equally aware that you’re a joke, and any party that’s closely identified with you will be subject to endless ridicule from left, right and center (deservedly).

we have to remember that ‘impeachment’ is actually a multi-step process
we’re likely to get part of the way through at least
and as it plays out and unfolds, it may be clearer how far it goes - ie stops in the house, goes to the senate, etc

and it’s still way too early to know clearly whether a senate acquittal would be a bad thing politically

I agree with you.

That impeachment is a multi-step process. And as each step unfolds it will be much easier to see what the next step. (Including the results and consequences of a Senate vote.)

And I particularly agree with your point that “we’re likely to get part of the way through at least”.

Somewhere in comparing a taco and a burrito, doesn’t masa versus flour matter? I’ve never seen masa burrito, though given regionality it could totally exist and I’m just haven’t been exposed with my mostly-Americanized consumption of Mexican food.

Also, burritos are specifically North Mexican (Ciudad Juarez) and big thick ones started in San Fransisco.

Absolutely. The masa is crucial in distinguishing. There may be a masa burrito somewhere, but it would be a freak of nature shunned by all decent people.

a burrito is a wrap
a taco is a wad of folded bills

- rice pudding is not rice porridge
- potage parmentier is not vichyssoise

re: #83 Charles Johnson

Absolutely. The masa is crucial in distinguishing. There may be a masa burrito somewhere, but it would be a freak of nature shunned by all decent people.

See, my guess is that somewhere in the past there is splitting from a tradition of flatbreads on a comal when flour becomes available as a substitute for masa, and another splitting that has to do with stretch and foldability of flour, meaning wrapping fillings rather that just creating a pocket (gorditas) or a single fold (tacos) or a tight curl with just a bit of filling (flautas).

So there’s probably a bunch of intermediate stages more than a century ago in which the word “taco” and “burrito” are blurry because the new term hasn’t been arrived on 100%, and the form isn’t completely solid either. The Mission burrito isn’t exactly the Juarez burrito, so the meaning still isn’t truly fixed, either.

And all that’s setting aside the distinct possibility there’s some kind of separate thing going on in Southern Mexico. Tlayudas are their own thing distinct from tacos, so there might be a traditional big masa wrapper, but also not a burrito?

Eh, I’m just spinning wheels. Food language is alternately intensely precise…people having a very clear picture in their head of what a food thing should be…and then experiences explosions of the lexicon as individuals experiment with the limits of a form, but also try and brand new creations by naming them.

Not surprising from a man who doesn’t believe you should recruit foreign agents to provide information. Trump apparently has a mindset appropriate to 90 years ago:

“Gentlemen don’t read each other’s mail” was a quote from Henry Stimson in 1929:

From 1920 to 1933, Henry L. Stimson was secretary of state in the Hoover administration. In 1929, he closed down the State’s cryptanalytic office and his quote about gentlemen not reading each other’s mail became famous.

How to give a cat a pill:

Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat’s mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat’s throat vigorously.

Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil, and blow down drinking straw.

Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink 1 beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse’s forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

Retrieve cat from neighbor’s shed. Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard, and close door onto neck, to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer. Fetch bottle of Scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw T-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

Call fire department to retrieve the damn cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil-wrap.

Tie the little @!!@#@#$%’s front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy-duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of steak filet. Be rough about it. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

Consume remainder of Scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and remove pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

Arrange for SPCA to collect mutant cat from hell and call local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.
