re: #201 Interesting Times

Another thing I just realized is that the trump rally chants contain, as marketing parlance would put it, a Call to Action (“lock her up”, “drain the swamp”, etc)

So sane people/groups could try something like:

Trump’s a thief
Stop the con
End the grift
Vote them out
Im-peach trump

And while it doesn’t contain a Call to Action, an example of a chant that’s already taken off is “Moscow Mitch”

Ditch Moscow Mitch

Note that “do something about it” almost CERTAINLY means “add them to the concentration camps.” #FirstTheyCame just reached its second or third line, folks.

I’m glad you reposted it because it leads me to (again) post Tom Paxton’s liner notes and still (sadly) applicable song from 1965:

“Begun in the London subway on the way to a Trafalgar Square peace march, this song is a reflection of my preoccupation with fascism and what makes it tick, particularly in some quarters here in America. The traditional German cop-out is all too easy to spot. With the soldiers it was obedience to orders; with the civilians it was variations on a theme of ‘I was never a Nazi’ and ‘We had no idea of what was going on.’

In Mississippi we have families who ‘know nothing’ of lynchings, beatings and murders. In any case, there is ‘nothing they can do to stop it.’

Even our establishment press has published pictures of South Vietnamese troops ‘interrogating’ a captured Viet Cong with the help of the water torture, beating them and dispatching them with .45’s.

Tell me you support the government’s policy if you like, but don’t try to tell me you didn’t know what was going on.”

We Didn’t Know

I look at Joe Biden and I see John Kerry. I see the “elder statesman” who is trying to appear as non-threatening as possible to white voters while preaching incrementalism, the long-debunked Dem theory that the only way America will accept progress is if it’s introduced like iPhones: A new model every few years that updates a few features, but remains largely the same so people will accept it readily.

I swear, all this blood-curdling talk of violence and murder from the ammosexuals tempts me to consider using nuclear weapons against them. I mean, just small ones, and, like, just to set an example. You think force is the solution, goobers? Ok, here is force.
I went to Alex Weller’s handy nukemap and set it for our lowest yield nuclear weapon, the .02 KT (20 tons of TNT, 1/1000 of a Hiroshima) Davy Crockett warhead from the 50s. We apparently don’t actually have any of these just now, but it shouldn’t be too hard to whip some up in an emergency.

Davy Crockett was a recoilless gun on a tripod for firing the M-388 atomic round

I figured putting it on the White House might earn me a visit from the Secret Service even though I do not have a nuclear warhead, and have no idea how to get one.
Instead, I put the little guy on another den of RWNJ violence and depravity, the belly of the beast in fact, the NRA headquarters in Fairfax Virginia.

As you can see, it made short work of the whole complex, with little damage beyond. There is that whole unpleasant radiation/fallout thing but that is science and RWNJs don’t believe in science so they can hardly complain on that basis.

Not entirely.

The Balfour Declaration was 1926; UK was already on board with establishing a Jewish homeland on part of what UK won from the Ottomans in WWI. Right around the same time UK was using other parts of the former Ottoman Empire to establish Iraq, Transjordan (that the now-called Palestinians were supposed to be part of), Saudi Arabia, etc.

But it wasn’t until after the Holocaust and those gazillion Jews piling up in the Displaced Persons camps in Cyprus that there were enough people to make it a hugely controversial thing (controversial in the sense that Arab and/or Muslim nations got upset about it; and what remained of the European nations were happy enough to just not have the survivors trying to reclaim their homes and be an in-your-face reminder of something the Germans, Poles, French, Italians, etc., didn’t want to have to think about)

Of course, but the holocaust was the trigger to implement Balfour. Without it, the declaration was sitting there for 20 years without any implementation. It was a fait accompli that was waiting for European guilt to utilize. In the end, it was useful to establish the Jewish State, but it was fuzzy enough that it resulted in the chaos that has existed for the last 71 years. I know this is a shallow dive into the establishment of Israel, but dear dog, the situation has been fucked up from the beginning and begging for conflict.

The former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott has defended a speech he gave in praise of the far-right prime minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, and says a Brexit failure by Britain would be comparable to losing the Falklands war.

In an opinion piece for Spectator Australia, published on Friday, Abbott said the real “extinction rebellion” facing Western society “is not against our failure to reduce emissions more but against our failure to produce more children”.

By which he means white babies.

Bottom line is that Abbott and his Australian throwbacks are part of the same movement as Brexit, Orban, Trump, and the rest.

It made news last year as a proposal:

Hungarians protest against ‘slave law’ overtime rules

I wasn’t sure what came of it, but it did pass their parliament:

Hungary’s ‘slave law’ passes, sparking protests in parliament and on the streets

There was this analysis that a search provided:

‘Slave act’: changes to working time rules

The exact implications of the new rules cannot be predicted. Supporters of the new rules state that they will provide those seeking additional work and earnings with a means for attaining them. It is also believed that the more flexible rules on work scheduling will attract multinationals and foster further foreign investment in Hungary.

Only time will tell whether these expectations will be fulfilled or whether further changes will be required in order to better protect employees’ rights.

That was 8 months ago, so I wonder what time has told?

Lake Michigan flood barriers to be installed along select beaches starting Thursday night or Friday

Hundreds of yards of jersey barriers will be installed along the lakefront in September to mitigate flooding at eight locations, the Chicago Department of Transportation said. The installation is expected to begin Thursday night or Friday.

Record high water levels in Lake Michigan have drastically raised the potential for flooding. While Wednesday was the perfect day for a September swim, if you wanted to sunbathe in Rogers Park you had to pick a spot on the grass, as high lake levels and erosion have wiped out the sand.

Too bad climate modelling didn’t predict that part of the world will have increased precipitation as the Earth’s surface warms…. oh wait…. they did.

oh good grief. that was not a “death threat tweet.” Beto offered a hypothetical gun policy position. the other guy offered a hypothetical, extremely vague rejoinder. nobody is going to waste their time investigating that.

By this time tomorrow, we’ll have been assured that this was a “joke,” that he totally never meant to issue a threat towards Beto, and that liberals are “humorless” for not recognizing it as such.

I really hate to harp on this, but this is idiotic. Here, let me offer a parallel example: “If Trump rapes my sister, my .38 will be ready for him.” Did I just “threaten the president”? No, I did not. Nor did this goober threaten Beto.

Belafon  Sep 13, 2019 • 4:41:01am

WFAA, Dallas Ft. Worth area, is doing a snap poll in response to Beto’s statement to buy back assault weapons. It’s not scientific, but can be seen as a passion measure. After 200k votes, gun buyback support was at 57% for 43% against.

93
A Mom Anon  Sep 13, 2019 • 4:48:13am

re: #92 Belafon

The buyback needs to include destruction of the weapons so they don’t end up being resold or stolen. Otherwise they end up in the black market or at gun shows or whatever. I couldn’t watch last night, hopefully plans for things like this include some “then what’s next?” thinking.

It made news last year as a proposal:

Hungarians protest against ‘slave law’ overtime rules

I wasn’t sure what came of it, but it did pass their parliament:

Hungary’s ‘slave law’ passes, sparking protests in parliament and on the streets

There was this analysis that a search provided:

‘Slave act’: changes to working time rules

That was 8 months ago, so I wonder what time has told?

I dated a Hungarian back in my single days. He was a no shit white supremacist. And the thing was he was not like these yokel rednecks or Proud Boys running around. He was very smart, dignified, smooth, urban. Scary as hell.

That lasted until I figured out that, yes, he meant all of this.

White supremacism was an integral characteristic of American culture from our nation’s inception. Google “Hitler inspired by the United States” to see articles such as this one Nothing could have been more mainstream than slavery and the later Jim Crow laws that infested our nation and that the maladministration that governs us today is trying to reinstate. Indeed, if you look at the modern GOP and its efforts to disenfranchise minorities, you have a model of how this evil has never left us. The Russians may have interfered in the 2016 election, but white supremacism is not a foreign import; it is made in America.

I have read his gun law proposals, and I agree with all of it. I just want to make sure those physical weapons are secured and disposed of, rendered useless, no exceptions. I don’t think cops and the military need vast stockpiles of these sorts of weapons either. And more special training for them for those that do use them as part of their job.

Lake Michigan flood barriers to be installed along select beaches starting Thursday night or Friday

Too bad climate modelling didn’t predict that part of the world will have increased precipitation as the Earth’s surface warms…. oh wait…. they did.

There are areas in Chicago where high rise apartment buildings were built just a few feet from the lake. Expensive high rises. When they were built, they were probably 20 or 30 feet from the water but that has changed and last time I was there, the lake was spitting distance from the building.

If you look at a map where Lake Shore Drive begins (at the north), you will see what I am talking about. That entire area going north for probably a mile is going to have big problems.

I grew up near there. I know the area well.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I guess there was something called a debate last night among Democratic party candidate for POTUS. Didn’t watch it.

Does this make me a bad person for thinking that: 1) this isn’t actually a debate, but a way to spew as many talking points and getting noticed as possible; 2) avoiding gaffes to seem presidential; and 3) doing just enough to get to the next debate?

This debate should have had half as many people participating as it did, and you’d have probably gotten twice as much substantive discussion going.

And the folks up there seem to forget that the biggest issue is Trump and a fascist curious GOP are intent on breaking government in every way imaginable - and that’s who needs to be called out nonstop. Health care debate is great and all, but the GOP is actually currently fighting to eliminate Obamacare and roll back health coverage for 25% of Americans should they win their current lawsuit (it challenges the entirety of Obamacare as valid; if the courts rule it is invalid, all of it is wiped out, including preexisting conditions protections, so if you have any preexisting condition, you’d see your premiums soar and many would lose coverage). As it is, the GOP assault on health care has already seen nearly 1 million lose coverage - the first drop since Obamacare was rolled out - that’s entirely due to the GOP sabotaging of the program.

There’s no way you get to M4A or anything better than the existing plans if the GOP wipes out the existing health care programs and the judicial branch sets the stage for further rollbacks of every govt program. The GOP long con is to roll back govt to the Gilded Age where the rich get richer and everyone else is fucked.

Prediction: These swaggering gun punks will fold like a cheap tent when the proposition becomes real, just as their New Orleans counterparts did when the yokel cops confiscated guns without a shred of legal authority after Hurricane Katrina. The victimized gun owners had to get the hated ACLU to retrieve them. The average conservative male overestimates his capacity for force by a factor of 10 and overstates it by a factor of 100. As my First Sergeant said, “Red neck, yellow belly.” Everyone who served in combat then knows it. True 50 years ago, and true now.

We were long overdue to call it quits after four years together but she avoided the issue. And still would not tell me why, just hit me with some cliché talking points about “needing to be single”…

Still miss her fiddling.

I had only been with the girl in my story for about nine months but, to the best of my knowledge, I hadn’t done anything to aggravate her or upset her. Regardless, I feel like I dodged a bullet on that one.

I didn’t really get a chance to watch the debate last night, but I did catch some of the live tweeting where I could.

It feels like people were watching two very different debates, with the usual ‘serious’ press corp lauding Biden for being king of the stage, while commentators who I tend to trust a lot finding him condescending and dismissive.

Seemed like Warren, Beto, and Harris had good nights though?

For years I had bad luck with women, which was surprising because I always treated them respectfully.

In college I was supposed to go on a date with this girl in my class and I was excited because I never thought she’d say yes when I asked, but she did. Anyway, she blew me off on our first date but ended giving me a semi-plausible excuse why she couldn’t make it. So we sent up another date for the next weekend. She blew me off on that one too then promptly ghosted me.

WHY THE FUCK AGREE TO A SECOND DATE IF THAT WAS YOUR PLAN, LADY?

I don’t think Biden’s response to Castro was particularly good (and I don’t think Castro was wrong in going after Biden the way he did). Biden also fucked up when a question about executive orders was directed at Harris and Biden jumped in before she could even answer.

I’ve got the feeling that the case for Biden’s candidacy isn’t much more than “it’s my turn.” And that’s never worked particularly well for Democrats.

Watched it with a small group of white anti-Trumpers of various political persuasions. Some liked Booker and most felt Amy and Mayor Pete did fine too. One, who supports Pete, was dismissive of Warren — he likes her but thinks she has 0 chance of victory. Another thinks that Beto’s proposals, if promoted during the campaign, would doom the party to failure. Who knows what would work in the Trump era?

By March 10th, 26 of the 57 primaries/caucuses will have been completed (and that includes most of the biggest states). My guess is that we’ll have a presumptive nominee by then; and if not, then by the 17th when there’s 5 more contests.

“…Prior to the debate, RNC chair Ronna McDaniel and Kayleigh McEnany, press secretary of the Trump 2020 campaign, were in town to hold an event as part of the “Vamos to Victory” tour, which the campaign said was to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

The Trump campaign, doing Hispanic outreach? Exciting stuff. The rally took place in the bowels of a geographically isolated whiskey distillery in an industrial part of Houston—the kind of venue that would serve as a defensible home in the event of a zombie attack. The event was an example of the rich tradition of campaigns doing things so that they can be seen to have done them. A few dozen people listened to McDaniel speak. At the end, a Hispanic Republican from California gave a presentation about how to register voters. Maybe a dozen people stuck around to hear him, with a few other attendees drinking and chatting in the background.

One of the instructions: Follow the president on Twitter. Another: “You have to be really careful not to bribe anyone,” he said. And: “You can’t throw away their ballot if they register as Democrat. That’s super-illegal.” (There’s no party registration in Texas—you can’t register to vote as a member of any party.)

Oh yeah, they were dark as fuck. Very well written I might add. The first live action movie was essentially a toned DOWN version of those comics.

But in order to achieve mass market success in those days, they had to soften things up and turn it into a colorful kids cartoon.

What is a Post Malone (a dude, I known that much) and why do I need to know that?

He is, I believe, a rapper. The face tattoos are, well… his aesthetic.

So some goober with a grill and a tattoo’d face. I still don’t know why I need to know who he is.

I am not a rap fan…is his music any good? Coz, if not, pointlessly filling up my brain.

I don’t listen to much rap or R&B, but this one sort of crossed over and I liked it:

That’s ok. Thanks. At least it has music in it (I don’t like the beat and words only stuff). So rap is now anyone who sings fast? :D

He’s had some biggish hits. He’s also one of Fallon’s favorite guests.

Yeah it’s the lightbulbs.//

LEDs and compact fluorescent have a higher color temperature than incandescent, so you are LESS likely to look orange under them.

Ahh yess.. that horrible show with badass spaceships and dumb as fuck premise. Even a talent like Martin Landeau couldn’t save it from being utter dreck. Ever tried watching it now? Unwatchable.

The Eagle spaceships were still badass though. They could conceivably even work in real life- artificial gravity ignored of course.

Dragon’s Domain was freaking terrifying, though. Legit one of the most horrifying monsters I have ever seen on TV…still. Scared me to death as a kid and one of the few that still genuinely holds up.
