From the last thread:

re: #74 HappyWarrior

I get that remakes are nothing new but it really seems lazy to do all these remakes.

I think a lot of studio executives are unwilling to take a chance on new ideas. It’s an ongoing trend in film right now, along with wanting things that translate well for overseas box office receipts. That second one is one of the reasons that the Rock has become a megastar - it’s easy to sell The Rock vs Whatever overseas.

Conversely, in television, everyone seems more willing to take a chance because there’s just so many outlets now.

If you want a feel-good story: a follow up on the Michael Vick dogs (fighting pit bulls).

washingtonpost.com

I read the follow up in each and every one (and I am NOT a pit bull fan, as two neighboring pits “raised from puppies with children and other pets”, came over and tore one of my loving cats in two in front of me. At least they did not turn on me when I chased them off). The only thing about the article that made me sick to my stomach was the role of PETA and HSUS, with PETA saying they still want to see all such dogs euthanized. Of course, it is really all domestic animals. Damn them.

We contributed to the rescue work at Best Friends for this because we’ve always had AmStaffs until our county passed an ordinance requiring a $500,000 bond for every AmStaff (purebred or mix), effectively making it impossible for them to be a part of our family anymore.

It makes MrBWS sick that the line he had always had as a companion stopped when the last one died of cancer just a few years ago.

To a certain extent. But I don’t feel like I’ve even seen much new white bread stuff in recent years. I mean of the top 10 grossing movies this year, only one is not a remake or sequel. You’ve got to go to 15 to find the second original IP on the list.

You basically hit it. It takes more effort, money and risk to build a new property than ride off the back of an established one. You might notice in a lot of cases the first film in a franchise is NOT its highest grossing title. That all goes back to needing time to build a new IP.

Video games are notorious for this too, to an extent. Most AAA titles are just sequels or reboots of well known properties (Mario, Zelda, Need for Speed, Call of Duty, Resident Evil, Halo, Mega Man, Final Fantasy, the list goes and on).

That said, when it comes to games, if you know where to look, there are plenty of good original IPs on offer from smaller indie developers.

And Hogger wanted a puppy of his own so Ellis (Little Shit Dog: read the initials) joined the pack:

All of these dogs were rescues except for CD, who was the last of the purebred AmStaff line.

Oh, I get all that. I suppose what I’m bemoaning, more than anything is the whole franchise trend right now. Everything has to be able to create multiple sequels and/or spin offs. It seems really difficult to do a simple stand alone movie, especially if it is character driven (harder to translate means harder to sell over seas).

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the John Wick movies just a bit too much, but I’d have been fine if it was just the first movie and nothing more. Now there’s going to be a fourth movie and a potential TV spin off.

Then again, Netflix has been pretty good in turning out the non-franchise movies of late. And I rarely have much desire to actually go to a movie theater, so…

They are GREAT dogs, especially with children (in Victorian times and even later, they were very much in demand as babysitters), it all depends on how they are raised…much like ANY breed of dog.

Last time I checked, the worst (read: most vicious/dangerous) breeds were Dachshunds and Chihuahuas.

I do know a bit about at least one Dachshund. We housesat for a family for a year when we were just married. Barely any rent, but we had to take care of their Dachshund. He was mostly sweet, but could get in a rage about food; but in particular his burrowing-animal instincts would kick in—dog under the table and your leg swings in his direction meant a lunge; playful dog goes down into the sheets on the bed—you lift the sheets and the dog comes at you like shot out of a rocket because vestigial impulses about being in a den of some kind and coming under attack kick in.

My wife was pregnant while we lived there and the little beast followed her everywhere; when she slept on the couch he would jump up to put his head on her tummy. Mostly a sweet boy, but I can see how they cause lots of bites.

re: #62 Barefoot Grin

I worked at a grooming shop for a few years. The meanest dogs we dealt with were little dogs. They are often spoiled and entitled because people think since they’re small they don’t need to train them. There was a Beagle Basset who refused to allow me near him. He was adorable looking, but the only person who could groom him was the meanest groomer we had. I think he sensed a kindred spirit.

The one major exception to this is Chow Chows. Several grooming shops won’t even deal with them. We had a Chow specialist and she was great, but she did get bitten severely one time. They do NOT like being groomed.

Huskies are the biggest babies. They’re beautiful, but my God are they dramatic. Not bitey, but just moan and cry and collapse. :D

When I was in junior and high school, my mom raised long-haired dachshunds. They were ALL adorable.

A few days/sometime ago someone posted here a tweet about a dachshund pup who was paralyzed at birth.

We had that prob with one litter and it was a hip dysplasia sort of thing at birth…it was a genetic thing.
Fortunately, it only involved two puppers…one was able to completely recover from the back leg taping followed by intense physical therapy. The other pup ended up with stiff back legs but otherwise you couldn’t keep him down…he was a jumper/hopper.

His name was TinyTim and MrBWS’s family took him into their family back in 1965

Was it Molly Ivins or Ann Richards who said of his RNC speech “it sounded better in the original German”?

Ivins, but Clarence Page also made the same observation as Ivins on TV the night of Buchanan’s speech, but observed that Buchanan had always been friendly to him when they were co-panelists on the McLaughlin Group, adding “But I guess you never really know about a person until he runs for president.”

My parents eloped from Lubbock and got married in Clovis, New Mexico. Her parents disapproved. She was said to be the prettiest girl in Lubbock and they were disappointed that she rejected the jug eared local boys in favor of a handsome young airman from California. Just being from Cal was scandalous enough but he also looked like a Mexican, Anglo name notwithstanding. The eventual parents went to England the next year. 8 months into my mother’s pregnancy, they went to Salisbury on the assurance that it was ok for her to travel. It wasn’t, and that is how I arrived a month early, within sight of Stonehenge, on the summer solstice.

Yeah. But as the top of the privilege food chain, I’m leery of being the first to excuse things.

My Nephew In Law posted on FB about how silly it was that there was controversy over the “Redskins” team name. I suggested maybe he and I were not the ones who should be making that judgement.

I dunno. In a way, this is a MUCH clearer transgression than Ralph Northam’s, who quite possibly was NEITHER of the people in the picture in that yearbook.

How many of you, when you heard about an ‘urgent and credible’ issue in the Intelligence Community that the White House and DOJ are trying to cover up, JUST KNEW it was gonna be Trump and his big mouth?

Trump’s communications with foreign leader are part of whistleblower complaint that spurred standoff between spy chief and Congress, former officials say

The whistleblower complaint that has triggered a tense showdown between the U.S. intelligence community and Congress involves President Trump’s communications with a foreign leader, according to two former U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

Trump’s interaction with the foreign leader included a “promise” that was regarded as so troubling that it prompted an official in the U.S. intelligence community to file a formal whistleblower complaint with the inspector general for the intelligence community, said the officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
