Issa’s nomination as a trade official was put on indefinite hold because it appears he failed FBI background checks.

In going forward with the hearing, Risch broke with decades of bipartisan tradition in the committee, which normally would not schedule confirmation hearings without the agreement of the ranking member of the opposing party. Menendez had opposed the scheduling of the hearing.

Ultimately, Risch agreed to indefinitely delay the confirmation hearing on Issa’s nomination to lead the U.S. Trade and Development Agency after an unprecedented public back-and-forth with Menendez over allegedly problematic and potentially disqualifying classified information in Issa’s FBI background investigation. The White House has thus far declined to provide the information to the rest of the committee members.

That sounds entirely like how Trumpworld operates.

We’ve seen Trump lie and make boastful statements to Russia, giving them details that undermine our intel sources and those of our allies (Israel). That he’d be doing this regularly shows that he is unfit for office.

I’m not all together convinced we’d get anything that would be a game changer. We already know he had that billion dollar loss that he is probably still using to pay 0 federal income tax. If there was anything blatantly illegal even the IRS would have found it, so at best we end up with the Times and Post doing deep dives and coming up with stuff that is suggestive of money laundering or something but anytime you need to get down in the weeds like that the public is pretty much going to tune it out.

Please — the “wealthy” own a host of shady accountants who make it very difficult to uncover their actual criminality. It’s expensive investigating their taxes — much easier to pursue those who cannot afford serious legal advice.

I still recall, (and I mentioned this before) in the wake of Enron and the destruction of Arthur Anderson, a radio report about another major accounting firm that marketed a tax evasion scheme that they asserted would escape prosecution because it was so complicated that government investigators could not penetrate their deception. Someone did get hold of their internal documents to publicize this information but I don’t know if anyone was tried or fined for these actions.

Remember, Helmsley’s “only little people pay taxes” remark. Yes, she was imprisoned but there are many more who escaped. Several years ago, a colleague of mine had a brother who traded on the CBOE. Apparently, he and most of his colleagues never filed returns and so never paid taxes. Our tax system is a disgrace.

blatantly yes - which usually involves under or unreported income (that the irs can find) or overstated expenses.

however an awful lot of illegality or impropriety can be hiding in plain sight right in front of the irs’s nose and unless they were looking for something specific they might not see it

then there’s corroboration:
- did his lenders get the same tax returns that were actually filed. normally they get them from the irs directly to verify. with this bunch who knows.
- did he use different sets of numbers in his proceedings to undervalue his assets and save real estate taxes? the irs wouldnt know that either

The IRS audit division has seen its ranks thinned due to the GOP gutting enforcement and oversight - reducing the percentage of people receiving audits. It means there are fewer experienced audit investigators who can do the kind of specialized work needed to untangle Trump’s small business companies and all the cross-deals between them to find wrongdoing.

If you run a sophisticated enough scam and do enough self dealing for long enough, it can be hard to spot, even with trained investigators. I know that sounds weird, but if a business always does things a certain way, the bad act doesn’t stand out the way that a sudden change in financial accounting might. People, and computer systems that do audit checks, look for discrepancies and changes in patterns.

That makes spotting wrongdoing that goes on for years even harder to spot than the run of the mill tax evasion (like say purposefully mischaracterizing income or taking deductions that you were not entitled to, etc., all to reduce tax liability illegally).

Reading up on this whistleblower case on Trump’s promise, I’m beginning to think we need to codify the outer reaches of executive privilege. I doubt any president of either party would willingly sign a bill doing so, thus it’s going to require veto-proof majorities.

In explaining their position, ODNI has suggested there is a question of privilege. The agency wrote in a letter to lawmakers on September 13 the complaint “involves confidential and potentially privileged communications by persons outside the Intelligence Community.” The letter ends by noting the agency would work toward “protecting Executive Branch confidentiality interests.”

Because that sort of bullshit is incredibly dangerous.

Trump will blame wind turbines.

He will ignore that bird strikes against buildings and structures (including glass clad skyscrapers) is the biggest source of bird mortality. Even the USFWS indicates that anywhere from 365 million to 988 million birds are killed due to building collisions annually.

It looks like the upper margin appears to be involved here.

Even if Trump keeled over or was impeached out of office tomorrow, there is no going back to the way things were before he became POTUS, at least not completely.

Except for routine violation of the emoluments clause and a worship of Putin, what is it that Trump has done that is out of character for the GOP?

A compromised SC? — what about the 2000 court that stole the election?

Lying to foment war? Bush 43 did that.

Destroying the environment? Every modern member of the GOP.

Attacking health care? Preceded Trump.

Homophobia? Attacking women’s right to choose? Allowing corporations free rein? Destroying unions?

Purge Trump and the Republicans are back where they were before Trump: a malevolent organization out to harm anyone who isn’t rich or a religious fanatic.

Because that sort of bullshit is incredibly dangerous.

Pretty much every privilege in the world has an exception for illicit activity.

Because the market was over-saturated under Obama with Wayne LePierre warning that Obama was going to ban all gun and ammo sales, there is now a significantly diminished demand.

It’s mostly that there are just to many smaller manufacturers producing AR-15 clones for the market.
Since the patent expired on the AR-15 literally anyone can build them. Hell companies are getting rough receiver assemblies, barrels and other parts from the same suppliers Colt uses.
