It looks more and more like Trump tried to use military aid to Ukraine to extort them into assisting his campaign in destroying Joe Biden’s candidacy. And now that they’ve been caught, they’re moving quickly to the “Who cares?” stage where they argue that even if they did blatantly violate the law, nobody (who matters) got hurt and they’ve “made it right” by restoring the military aid, so he should be issued yet another mulligan and the matter dropped.

If this is all there is, I doubt it will change a single R vote in the Senate.

What the Democrats don’t seem to understand is that they are participants in a war vs. Republicans and Republican enablers in the media.

So far it’s mostly a propaganda war, and the main problem is that the Democrats aren’t really fighting back as needed to even stay in the war, much less win it.

Of course there can be no Fox News of the left because it would be stupid and also it wouldn’t work because the US left does not have the insatiable appetite for lies that the right does. The failure of Air America was disappointing.

But it remains essential for the left to have its own propaganda. That doesn’t have to be lies — Allied propaganda vs. the Axis powers in WWII was mostly truthful, and I see no reason to lie about Republicans when the truth about them is so damning.

re: #14 Ace Rothstein

So the deep state operative is right about the whole thing and they still deny it?

It’s the Steele dossier approach: So muddy the waters by arguing about the “bias” of the source that people will argue that rather than the actual contents. In this case, insist that this was a totally innocent call and that a “deep state operative” had a political motivation to bring it to the attention of higher ups.

Well, when the Russian asset in the White House starts fucking up everything the US intelligence community has been doing for decades, there will be massive resistance from the IC.

IMO the ‘deep state’ bullshit narrative is mainly focused on neutering that resistance. It’s also handy as a generic conspiracy theory to fill the hard vacuum inside wing skulls.

The find of my evening, courtesy of Mark Evanier’s blog and the husband who was reading it, wondering why is it we never knew this existed?

Quoting Mr. Evanier:
“In 1967, writer-musician Mason Williams released a song called “Classical Gas” and the following year, it became quite a big hit. Part of its popularity no doubt flowed from what we would now call a “music video” though at the time, that was not a term in the common lexicon. Working with a filmmaker named Dan McLaughlin, Williams made a film that set his song to the visual of 3000 great works of art, each of them on the screen for but a fraction of a second.

Williams was then the Head Writer for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour on CBS and the video debuted on The Summer Brothers Smothers Show, which was a summer replacement series that filled Tom and Dick’s time slot for a while in the summer of ‘68. Glen Campbell was the host.

This, uploaded to YouTube by Mason Williams himself, is that 3 minute and 10 second video. If you are familiar with the tune from its frequent radio play, you may notice that this is a different recording of the song. There are several. If you go to Spotify to listen to “Classic Gas” by Mason Williams, there’s a version that’s 2:36, another that’s 3:08 and one that’s 3:31 and I don’t think any of them are this one. My thanks to Maggie Thompson who discovered this was online…”

It’s starting to look like the only thing that was newsworthy about this whistleblowing incident was that it confirmed something that most of us suspected for awhile, that the withholding of military aid from Ukraine was an attempt at extortion. The sad reality is that the revelation of such will now do more to get the “BIDEN CORRUPTION!” story greater coverage than it might have received had Ukraine cooperated with the extortionists.

I wanted to ask:

Do Resurrection bodies?
1) drink liquids?
1b) if so, then do they urinate?
2) eat solid food?
2b) if so, then do they defecate?
3) become sexually aroused?
3b) even if they don’t have genitalia, is attraction still possible?
4) get hangnails?

But he blocked me right before I could post the tweet.

Y’know, that does bring up a sad reality: For all the excitement and expectation when Rudy blurted out that Donny had paid off Cohen to pay off Daniels, there were no negative consequences whatsoever experienced by anybody not named “Michael Cohen.”

I rather suspect that that will be the same outcome of tonight’s events, that now that Rudy’s admitted out loud what most people suspected for awhile, the trajectory of this whole scandal will rapidly mirror that of the stock market on Black Tuesday. The media’s interest in the story will have been sated, Republicans now have their excuse to ignore the crimes committed, and Democrats will be back to promising yet more “investigations” that will drag on to the heat death of the universe.

If you look at the scale to the right, you will note that the white areas indicate that more than 25” of rain has fallen in that area.

What it it doesn’t mention is that within that area, there are spots where over 40” of rain has fallen.

It is, and it’s a huge wake-up call for the petrochemical industry on the Texas gulf coast, and on into Lousiana.

The refineries that supply gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, and the cracking plants that supply feedstock and finished products for the plastics industry (and there are literally thousands of these plants and supporting facilities between Corpus and New Orleans) were built because they had easy access to ports where ships and pipelines provided them raw feedstock to make their products.

They have billions of dollars in infrastructure in that swath of coastal land, and now all of them are at a much higher risk because of climate change.

You know who will eventually demand a carbon neutral electrical grid? ExxonMobil, Shell, Texaco, BP, and the rest of the Gulf Coast petrochemical industries. They aren’t idiots. They’ve run the numbers, and they are looking down a huge and increasingly lethal gun barrel to their profits.

This is the blessing and curse of capitalism, where the companies that have caused the problem in the first place eventually realize that their self-interest forces them to be part of the solution.

Trumpworld is threatening to withhold federal funds from Duke and UNC Chapel Hill because a course being offered isn’t sufficiently positive about Christianity and Judaism, and focuses on Islam.

Umm…. this is actually a free speech abuse - where the government is seeking to impose its religious views on an educational institution.

The Trump administration has threatened to withdraw federal funding for a Middle East Studies course jointly taught by Duke University and the University of North Carolina because it believes it is too positive in its depiction of Islam in comparison to its portrayal of Judaism and Christianity. The Department of Education said the consortium had failed to offer a “balance of perspectives” on the religions and ordered the universities to remake the course to provide a more “positive” portrayal of Judaism and Christianity or lose its federal funding. The consortium received $235,000 in federal grant money last year. There is “a considerable emphasis placed on the understanding the positive aspects of Islam, while there is an absolute absence of any similar focus on the positive aspects of Christianity, Judaism or any other religion or belief system in the Middle East,” the Department of Education said in its letter to the schools.

“In a rare instance of federal intervention in college course content, the department asserted that the universities’ Middle East program violated the standards of a federal program that awards funding to international studies and foreign language programs,” the New York Times reports. “The inquiry was part of a far-reaching investigation into the program by the department, which under Betsy DeVos, the education secretary, has become increasingly aggressive in going after perceived anti-Israel bias in higher education.”

It’s rare until Trumpworld, which wants to remind everyone that Christianity is paramount in the US, and Islam is bad. They throw Judaism in for “balance” but make no mistake, this is about Trumpworld pushing their religious worldview to the exclusion of all others.

The program doesn’t violate any standards. It’s just more bulkshit from DeVos and the Christian fundamentalists.

The fact that these assholes are actually bringing ectopic pregnancies into the abortion debate is staggering to me. Talk about pulling back the mask in terms of the disregard they have for women.

It’s the usual “muddying the water” BS to justify draconian policies, combined with “doctors are always playing CYA” BS for flavoring. Since the overall goal of wingnuts is a total ban on abortions of any kind, the “centrist” position that abortions be kept legal in cases of incest and medical necessity have to be kneecapped. Enter articles like these where you get the “baffle them with bullshit” approach of arguing that doctors are only performing abortions in the case of ectopic pregnancies to avoid being sued, rather than because early intervention is the only sure means of preventing a woman from dying due to internal bleeding.

As we’ve seen in other countries, the result is that even in cases where “medical necessity” is an exemption under abortion bans, hospitals are so scared of being held criminally liable that they gamble on risk “wait and see” approaches in the hopes that they can convince a prosecutor that they had “no choice.”

It’s not confirmation bias; it’s an agenda that The Federalist promotes and it’s only when the pushback is overwhelming and hostile that they reconsider.

Small point: Besides the author’s insistence on relying only on anti-choice doctors for her arguments, it’s annoying to see her insistence on using “he” for the fetus. Yes, that was the grammatical convention foisted on us decades ago, but it has become jarring to see its continued use by conservatives because of their refusal to accept change in anything, including language, due to their continued view that “male” is the standard (especially white Christian males) and anything else is an aberration.

A couple days back, I posted about the South Korean authorities finding the identity of the Hwaseong Serial Killer. His name has been officially released by the police there.

Between 1986 and 1991 a record number of police officers were mobilised to try to find the person who raped and murdered women in rural parts of Hwaseong, south of the capital, Seoul.

They investigated 21,000 individuals and compared the fingerprints of about 20,000 more without success, and the case inspired South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho’s 2003 box office hit Memories of Murder.

But using the latest forensic techniques to retrieve DNA, officers have identified Lee Chun-jae, 56, as a suspect in at least three of the killings, said Ban Gi-soo of the Gyeonggi Nambu provincial police agency.

Samples collected from evidence, including a victim’s underwear, matched Lee’s, the police said.

Lee is serving a life sentence for raping and murdering his sister-in-law in 1994. He denies involvement in the Hwaseong murders and the 25-year statute of limitations has expired, meaning he will not be prosecuted, police added.

theguardian.com

The statute of limitations ran out in 2006, but at the very least, it now seems the mystery has been solved.

Personally, I hope that one of these days in the not-too-distant future, we’ll finally know who the Zodiac Killer was. Even if he’s deceased, it’d be nice to finally have a name, not a moniker.

Because he’s trying desperately to change the subject to one that benefits him, namely the idea that Biden’s son engaged in corrupt acts in Ukraine that warrant investigation. It’s the same reason he constantly talked about how the media “wasn’t talking about” Hillary emails or the Clinton Foundation, only to then turn the stories they did run into “proof” that she was corrupt and dishonest.

First off, why the heck is there a statute of limitations on murder, especially serial murder. It would be nice to get an identity on the Zodiac, but it is not going to be easy. He didn’t leave DNA at any of the crime scenes. They got a partial profile from the back of the stamps he used to mail his ciphers, but that was already submitted for a genealogical search almost a year ago and since it is a partial they were not hopeful.

He did send a piece of one of the victim’s shirts to a newspaper, so maybe if he touched that they can use new tech to pull touch DNA from it? Wouldn’t count on it though.

I’ve done the Migration Assistant thing for years (bringing in old settings) and that probably automatically copied over 10 year old settings that were bogging things down.

The GOP projects like IMAX incessantly. This is more of that. When they complain that X is doing something wrong/illegal/anti-Semitic, racist, misogynist, the odds are that the person making the complaint has actually done the bad thing, and the target X hasn’t done any such thing.

Or they’ve both done it, but IOKIYAR.

The GOP crime organization will readily dismiss Republican acts of extortion committed against our allies. Their behavior predated Trump and will continue long afterwards if they don’t suffer repercussions — and they won’t. The GOP march in lockstep to assure the destruction of our democracy.

It is only if the whistle-blower reported a Trump deference to Putin or a Trump support of the Khashoggi assassination that there might be a possibility that his behavior would be a step too far even for the GOP.

Looks like Trudeau is a goner…over…

Canada’s Justin Trudeau cannot say how often he wore blackface

Why? Trudeau is not a racist. He has been exemplary when it comes to the treatment of refugees (even meeting them at airports) and I’ve yet to hear of any racist incidents in his past. Wearing blackface is wrong but he has apologized and these incidents are well in his past. I hope Canadians aren’t silly enough to ditch him for Scheer who sounds like an actual racist and xenophobe.

True. However, Trudeau is also saddled by the legacy of his father who was one of the more polarizing Prime Ministers we’ve ever had. There are many Canadians who simply refuse to vote for a Trudeau. Justin was also tainted by a scandal earlier this year (google “SNC Lavalin” for more on that) which soured some Canadians on him.

That said there are also plenty of us who realize Andrew Scheer is an asshole, so we’ll see what happens.

The senior Trudeau was a much loved PM.

The SNC Lavalin scandal originated with the Harper government and, if the Liberals had one ounce of intelligence, they would have held hearings and get on record who wanted the largest firm in Quebec (not to mention Canada on the whole) to go under (for 10 years, which might as well have been permanent) because there would literally be not one conservative MP would would have gone on record to do that. Not one. (nor would there have been many Liberals who would go on the record for that, because that would guarantee that the party would never, ever win any seats in Quebec again. Ever.

Of course the people trying to hype this up are probably white supremacists who don’t see any difference between “Arabs” and Africans. (Quotation marks because the provenance of the 1000 nights suggests that Aladdin was Persian — i.e. one of the original Aryans).

I remember seeing this when it was shown on Glen Campbell’s show. Makes me wish those classic variety shows were on DVD or streaming. Production folks tell me the main thing stopping shows like Glen Campbell, Danny Kaye, Steve Allen and Judy Garland (among others) from going on streaming or DVD are the music clearances.

Dude. You have no idea.

Just trying to get the clearance from the Baha Men for “Who let the dogs out” for use in the Scooby-Doo movie ate up my roommate’s life back in the early 2000s.

The labels got desperate for money, and the one source left was Publishing. Used to be the bastard stepchild that nobody gave a shit about, now it’s steady hard cash, so they are milking the living hell out of their remaining cow.

Oh, I’ve heard from Sylvia Kaye and Joey Luft among others about how they can’t get the music clearances to get the Danny Kaye and Judy Garland shows on DVD or streaming. Shout ran into a stone wall with the clearances when putting out their Ernie Kovacs DVD set so they cut the songs out. Even the Tonight Show theme was cut from Ernie’s DVD set…

Adam L. Silverman would like everyone to understand that the Whistleblower Protection Act doesn’t actually protect whistleblowers in the intelligence community:

At this point, if they haven’t done so already, the Intelligence official or officer who made the complaint and his or her attorneys should have plans in place to both mitigate potential retaliatory legal action the administration might take and to safeguard her or his life and that of his or her family. The reason these actions are necessary is because the Intelligence Community Whistleblower Protection Act DOES NOT ACTUALLY PROTECT WHISTLEBLOWERS! Ken McClanahan, an attorney specializing in national security law, classification, and clearance provides a handy explainer at Just Security.

What is the ICWPA?

The ICWPA holds the dubious distinction of being the only “Whistleblower Protection Act” that doesn’t actually include any whistleblower protections. To summarize the law’s extensive history, I’ll say: It originally was intended to provide protections for national security whistleblowers who wanted to go to Congress, but was watered down in the final iteration due to separation of powers objections from the executive branch. While keeping the original - and misleading - name, the final law only really established a mechanism for Intelligence Community whistleblowers to forward a complaint to the congressional intelligence committees by way of an inspector general. It is a breakdown in this process that Schiff is flagging.

What is the ICWPA process?

Simply speaking, if a whistleblower working for an Intelligence Community agency wants to bring something to the attention of the congressional intelligence committees, they must write up a complaint and give it to either their agency’s inspector general or the Intelligence Community Inspector General (ICIG), specifically stating that it is an ICWPA complaint. The ICIG then has 14 days to decide if the complaint pertains to an “urgent concern” and if it is credible.
