What the Democrats don’t seem to understand is that they are participants in a war vs. Republicans and Republican enablers in the media.
So far it’s mostly a propaganda war, and the main problem is that the Democrats aren’t really fighting back as needed to even stay in the war, much less win it.

Y’know, that does bring up a sad reality: For all the excitement and expectation when Rudy blurted out that Donny had paid off Cohen to pay off Daniels, there were no negative consequences whatsoever experienced by anybody not named “Michael Cohen.”

It is, and it’s a huge wake-up call for the petrochemical industry on the Texas gulf coast, and on into Lousiana.
The refineries that supply gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, and the cracking plants that supply feedstock and finished products for the plastics industry (and there are literally thousands of these plants and supporting facilities between Corpus and New Orleans) were built because they had easy access to ports where ships and pipelines provided them raw feedstock to make their products.
They have billions of dollars in infrastructure in that swath of coastal land, and now all of them are at a much higher risk because of climate change.
You know who will eventually demand a carbon neutral electrical grid? ExxonMobil, Shell, Texaco, BP, and the rest of the Gulf Coast petrochemical industries. They aren’t idiots. They’ve run the numbers, and they are looking down a huge and increasingly lethal gun barrel to their profits.
This is the blessing and curse of capitalism, where the companies that have caused the problem in the first place eventually realize that their self-interest forces them to be part of the solution.

The Trump administration has threatened to withdraw federal funding for a Middle East Studies course jointly taught by Duke University and the University of North Carolina because it believes it is too positive in its depiction of Islam in comparison to its portrayal of Judaism and Christianity. The Department of Education said the consortium had failed to offer a “balance of perspectives” on the religions and ordered the universities to remake the course to provide a more “positive” portrayal of Judaism and Christianity or lose its federal funding. The consortium received $235,000 in federal grant money last year. There is “a considerable emphasis placed on the understanding the positive aspects of Islam, while there is an absolute absence of any similar focus on the positive aspects of Christianity, Judaism or any other religion or belief system in the Middle East,” the Department of Education said in its letter to the schools.
“In a rare instance of federal intervention in college course content, the department asserted that the universities’ Middle East program violated the standards of a federal program that awards funding to international studies and foreign language programs,” the New York Times reports. “The inquiry was part of a far-reaching investigation into the program by the department, which under Betsy DeVos, the education secretary, has become increasingly aggressive in going after perceived anti-Israel bias in higher education.”

It’s the usual “muddying the water” BS to justify draconian policies, combined with “doctors are always playing CYA” BS for flavoring. Since the overall goal of wingnuts is a total ban on abortions of any kind, the “centrist” position that abortions be kept legal in cases of incest and medical necessity have to be kneecapped. Enter articles like these where you get the “baffle them with bullshit” approach of arguing that doctors are only performing abortions in the case of ectopic pregnancies to avoid being sued, rather than because early intervention is the only sure means of preventing a woman from dying due to internal bleeding.
As we’ve seen in other countries, the result is that even in cases where “medical necessity” is an exemption under abortion bans, hospitals are so scared of being held criminally liable that they gamble on risk “wait and see” approaches in the hopes that they can convince a prosecutor that they had “no choice.”

A couple days back, I posted about the South Korean authorities finding the identity of the Hwaseong Serial Killer. His name has been officially released by the police there.
Between 1986 and 1991 a record number of police officers were mobilised to try to find the person who raped and murdered women in rural parts of Hwaseong, south of the capital, Seoul.
They investigated 21,000 individuals and compared the fingerprints of about 20,000 more without success, and the case inspired South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho’s 2003 box office hit Memories of Murder.
But using the latest forensic techniques to retrieve DNA, officers have identified Lee Chun-jae, 56, as a suspect in at least three of the killings, said Ban Gi-soo of the Gyeonggi Nambu provincial police agency.
Samples collected from evidence, including a victim’s underwear, matched Lee’s, the police said.
Lee is serving a life sentence for raping and murdering his sister-in-law in 1994. He denies involvement in the Hwaseong murders and the 25-year statute of limitations has expired, meaning he will not be prosecuted, police added.
The statute of limitations ran out in 2006, but at the very least, it now seems the mystery has been solved.
Personally, I hope that one of these days in the not-too-distant future, we’ll finally know who the Zodiac Killer was. Even if he’s deceased, it’d be nice to finally have a name, not a moniker.

First off, why the heck is there a statute of limitations on murder, especially serial murder. It would be nice to get an identity on the Zodiac, but it is not going to be easy. He didn’t leave DNA at any of the crime scenes. They got a partial profile from the back of the stamps he used to mail his ciphers, but that was already submitted for a genealogical search almost a year ago and since it is a partial they were not hopeful.
He did send a piece of one of the victim’s shirts to a newspaper, so maybe if he touched that they can use new tech to pull touch DNA from it? Wouldn’t count on it though.

The SNC Lavalin scandal originated with the Harper government and, if the Liberals had one ounce of intelligence, they would have held hearings and get on record who wanted the largest firm in Quebec (not to mention Canada on the whole) to go under (for 10 years, which might as well have been permanent) because there would literally be not one conservative MP would would have gone on record to do that. Not one. (nor would there have been many Liberals who would go on the record for that, because that would guarantee that the party would never, ever win any seats in Quebec again. Ever.

I’ll go further. I am simply bemused by the enormous scandal over his adding makeup to resemble a deeply tanned white (Caucasian) cartoon character.
