So, wait - Trump’s claiming that, without any preexisting program, he totally revamped our nuclear capability in only 2 1/2 years?

Right. Pull the other one.

Yeah, it’s total bulkshit from the first word to the last.

Obama calculated a 30 year plan to modernize the entire nuclear arsenal, including new missiles, subs, and aircraft to launch them from.

Trump hasn’t done even a fraction of the modernization needed.

re: #30 lawhawk

In fact, the Arms Control Association indicates that Trump is essentially mirroring Obama’s requests, and has called for several additional new weapons to be developed.

The cost and timeline is 20-30 years.

Where we are right now:

Columbia class boomers? None under construction.
Replacement for the B-2? None under construction.
Replacement for Trident and Minuteman missiles? None under construction.
New warheads? They’re in process of extending life of existing warheads and reducing the type deployed to make it easier to maintain over life of system.

None of this makes the existing arsenal demonstrably better than it was when Obama was in office. It’s just typical Trump bluster and bulkshit.

Seems like a lot of the Democratic leadership is still thinking the GOP is the GOP of old, from the days of Eisenhower and Rockefeller.

The GOP has morphed into an authoritarian political power that seeks to perpetuate its rule, consequences be damned. They will not forsake power in the name of democracy. They will forsake democracy for perpetual power and they will let nothing stand in their way, including the Constitution of the United States of America.

The GOP is now an existential threat to American democracy and liberty. They must be stopped. There can be no compromise with the enemies of freedom.

I like Pelosi and I understand that there are procedural and legal restrictions on things she can do with all of this as Speaker of the House. However, as we’re seeing in this very thread (and other places online that lean Democratic as well), the perception is that Pelosi’s playing way too cautious, that she has lost the fire in her belly, and that perception is steadily overtaking any reality she’s had to hew to in her position with what she knows with the party faithful.

I will agree that, overall, the older Dem leadership, after all that TrumpCo has done and continues to do to this country, its reputation, and its standing in the world, is still playing by Queensbury Rules and Robert’s Rules of Order, when the Republicans threw out the final pretenses of following rules and the law when Trump took office and took over their party. On one hand, it’s comforting to have a party who still does believe in and plays by the rules, but, on the other, it’s also a handicap because the Republicans know this and take advantage of Dems playing fair to their benefit.

It’s fucking frustrating as hell, but I don’t see any easy or simple way out of this, aside from continuing to vote Dem every chance we get, despite their perceived inaction on Trumpworld, because the GOP has got to fucking go.

I could put up with glacially slow action in the House if there were a concerted D PR effort to try to move public opinion on the issue of impeaching Trump. Having the House following public opinion rather than trying to move it all alone is a legit strategy to deal with the hostile media.

However, there is no sign of such a PR effort.

The New York Times is lying by omission saying “thousands of students across the world are on strike today” (as part of the Student Global Climate Strike; the numbers are tens of millions).

“Fox and Friends” spent the morning making fun of children down to elementary school age, and incredulous “liberal schools” would give students time off for this.

500,000 or more are in Battery Park alone, where Greta Thunberg is speaking.

Even the billionaires and millionaires; if they’re women, if they’re non-white, if they’re not Evangelical Christian, if they care about rule of law and America’s global leadership… which a lot of very wealthy people believe are well worth an extra 5% marginal tax rate.

The best way to guess how the Fortune 400 will vote — separate them into “inherited their money” or “earned it themselves in their own lifetimes”. For the most part, the ones who inherited vote R; the ones who earned it vote D.

Democrat throws hat into the ring to run against Sen. Ben Sasse

starherald.com
(Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

He is running on the slogan “Enough.”

“I’m running because I’ve had enough,” he said. “As a small business owner, I’m on the Affordable Care Act. When our representatives started voting to take health insurance away, I knew I had to do something.”

[Chris] Janicek comes from a farm family and when he dug into what’s happening to the farm economy, he knew he’d made the right decision. He did admit it was the last thing he’d thought of doing.

“I see the destruction of our state’s farm economy and our current representatives are doing nothing,” he said. “They’re not standing up to anything that’s decimating our farm economy so I want to do the right thing for the people of Nebraska, because they deserve it.”

Mr. Janicek is from the Omaha area. He spoke a few months ago about considering a run against Ben Sasse, saying that Sen. Sasse does not represent Nebraskans.

Ben Sasse’s approval ratings in this state have steadily dropped since he was elected.
morningconsult.com

It would be a tough slog, but if Mr. Janicek can pull it out that would flip a seat in the Senate.

I think the only reason Tulsi Gabbard even got any early attention was what I noted back in June.

When we drove back from Massachusetts to Nebraska, there was a Tulsi sign about every mile on I-80. I think she spent her whole campaign budget trying to raise her profile through billboards in Iowa for their upcoming caucuses.

I have never seen a Tulsi sign anywhere else I’ve been.

No one seems to have a pulse on what drives the USA anymore.

Between the right-wing noise machine and regular American indifference it is impossible to gauge the American feelings, especially since our usual barometers of network nightly news and newspaper headlines are no longer read.

I keep saying that this scandal is different but this scandal may be different. Bribery is to understand and encapsulate, there is no debating whether bribery is right or wrong or a crime. Bringing up bribery brings up connotations of things worse, not exonerating things.

The real teflon Don has been Don Trump.

My state governor derided the rallies in Nebraska as people who want to outlaw beef and ruin agriculture for Nebraska.

omaha.com

(Omaha World-Herald, with photographs from Omaha and reports on other rallies in the state capital of Lincoln, Kearney, and other cities.)

Nebraskans for Peace, a Panhandle organisation which organised the protest in Scottsbluff today, has a Facebook page which is set to private on today’s action there (as it is set to private, I can’t see it).

facebook.com

As such, I can’t see how that turned out.

No media in the Panhandle is covering the event, except as something happening in distant and far away places (they’re not even covering the Omaha and Lincoln events). That’s what you get when you’re entire media apparatus is captured by conservative groups like Sinclair. (Tom Steyer, how about buying some media outlets in conservative areas? That would do a lot more good than a quixotic attempt to buy the presidency.)
