UPS truck fully involved on South Loop between University and Indiana Avenue

The call came in just before 10:00 a.m., and Lubbock Police were on scene assisting.

No injuries have been reported. The main lanes of South Loop 289 were blocked for a time. Later, emergency crews re-opened one of the main lanes.

Drivers were urged to avoid the area and drive with caution.

A reporter on scene said the UPS driver smelled something weird, and pulled over. The driver saw that something among the packages in the back of the truck was on fire.

There’s Only One Way to End Gridlock in Washington

Mitch McConnell doesn’t care how clever you are or how you frame your message on climate change or any other issue. If we haven’t learned this already, we should know it by now: no matter how strongly the American people disagree with him, McConnell isn’t going to change his mind. In order to maintain power as his party slides into a minority, he’s willing to throw democracy under the bus by breaking the Senate, suppressing the vote, gerrymandering congressional districts, and packing the courts with extremists. That is the political reality we are dealing with right now.

As [Sen.] Schatz said, the only way to make any headway on climate change, or any other issue, is for Democrats to beat Republicans in 2020. He goes on to say that the way to do that is to ensure that all of the young people who are climate activists also become climate voters. We could say the same thing about other issues like gun violence, health care, or immigration. While activism continues beyond an election, it will accomplish nothing if we allow Republicans to maintain gridlock.

During Friday’s taping of The View, Meghan McCain (of the Do You Know Who My Father Is McCains) stormed off stage after guest Ana Navarro asked her to please stop yelling at everyone.

The panel was discussing the news that a whistleblower filed a complaint regarding Donald Trump’s conversation with Ukraine when McCain abruptly changed the subject to talk about Wikileaks’ Julian Assange and a heated on-air argument she recently had with Pamela Anderson over the matter. McCain says that there are “a lot of liberals who are okay with Julian Assange releasing Hillary’s emails” but who are “screaming bloody murder right now about this whistleblower.”

Now, there are definitely a lot of people who identify as liberal or progressive who are very pro-Assange. They in no way represent the general views of liberalism, and it’s pretty ignorant to lump all liberals in together as loving Assange. McCain of all people should take some care with making blanket statements like this, as she really hates it when people lump her in with the worst homophobic, transphobic, generally bigoted conservatives out there-by which I mean her husband.

There are several benefits to impeachment that have literally nothing to do with whether Republicans in the Senate ultimately convict. One more time, for the cheap seats in the back:

1. The impeachment inquiry and public hearings associated therewith GRAB THE MIC from Republicans. It lets US control the narrative for once. Republicans have been blasting lies and distortions from a loudspeaker for years, while we’ve been whispering the truth in 450 page PDF documents no one reads. An impeachment inquiry in the House changes that.

2. It informs the VOTING PUBLIC before the next election.

HE IS ALREADY DOING THAT! And if we don’t impeach, he gets an argument just as strong, if not stronger. He gets to say that even DEMOCRATS are ok with everything he’s doing.

The Aussie Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, is visiting the US and of course he’s Trump’s guest. Well, Morrison wanted to bring along his mentor, Brian Houston, the lead pastor of the Hillsong megachurch (with several outlets here in the Phoenix area). *However*, someone in the White House either let their fingers do the walking or knew that Houston was unacceptable in one particular way.

Even though Brian Houston would have fit in very well with Trump’s court evangelicals, the dude is highly radioactive because he covered up his preacher father’s sexual abuse of children. A standard response of both policy makers and private citizens to hardships—from natural disasters to mass shootings—is to offer “thoughts and prayers.” Critics argue that such gestures are meaningless and may obstruct structural reforms intended to mitigate catastrophes. In this study, we elicit the value of receiving thoughts and prayers from strangers following adversity. We find that Christians value thoughts and prayers from religious strangers and priests, while atheists and agnostics are “prayer averse”—willing to pay to avoid receiving prayers. Furthermore, while indifferent to receiving thoughts from other secular people, they negatively value thoughts from Christians.

When they “pay,” they mean pay actual cash money.

The authors devised a study launched right after Hurricane Florence struck North Carolina of Christians and atheists.

They explain how they arrived at their conclusion that the “average” atheist would pay a Christian $1.51 to leave them out of their prayers.

Christians valued most a prayer from a priest (regardless of whether the person was Catholic, Protestant, &c) and would be willing to pay over $7 to receive a prayer from him in a crisis. They valued prayers from religious people more than thoughts.

Atheists would pay to avoid thoughts and prayers (implicitly preferring actions).

I’m trying to get them pinned down on asexuality, but so far, they’ve refused to answer. For the record, I don’t consider myself defective, I just see being asexual as part of being who I am. The only time my epilepsy drugs were ever late were two: When I lived in Oklahoma and the VA for some moronic reason decided to use UPS. The drugs arrived at the distribution centre on the same day our town was hit by a tornado. They never found the box.

The other time is any time I go on a trip longer than the thirty days of medication they will give me. It’s like pulling teeth to get an extension, as if I was dipping into someone’s personal stash of barbiturates.

California High School Principal Threatens Students Right to Protest (goes to the American Humanist Association)

(Washington, D.C., September 18, 2019) - Attorneys at the American Humanist Association warned administrators at Mira Costa High School this morning against the unconstitutional behavior of discouraging students from protesting the Pledge of Allegiance.

On September 11, 2019, the principal of the Manhattan Beach Unified School District high school announced via the intercom that he was “personally offended by any teacher or student who did not stand for the Pledge.” The principal has also canvassed the school in an effort to discern if anyone was not standing for the daily ritual.

As the warning letter states, any attempts by the school district or administrators to infringe on students’ rights to refuse to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance “would be actionable as a serious constitutional violation.”

The question of the Pledge of Allegiance was settled in 1943 in a case of Jehovah’s Witnesses against a school district in West Virginia.

Last year there was a flock of 10 turkeys hanging out on the north side of campus up to early November. One day, an eleventh turkey joined the group — and the next day they were all gone. (Was the newcomer sent to warn them that Thanksgiving was coming?)

So yesterday morning, I was walking across campus, and what do I see but turkeys! 🦃

Not only that, but there were geese with them (I’ve never seen a goose on the campus, they hang out at the marina). And here’s a rare image of a turkey courting a goose. Pervert.

When the news broke Sept. 10 that a lawsuit had been filed against NFL star receiver Antonio Brown accusing him of rape, Barstool Sports, like many other websites, published an article about it. But it was the comments on that article that told the real story.

Two comments alone — “I hate this guy but I think this is all BS and some chick is trying to get paid” and “Most obvious extortion attempt I’ve ever seen” — racked up hundreds of “likes” on the sports and culture blog geared toward young men. A majority of replies to the article on Twitter elicited jokes about rape or crude remarks and captured a perspective popular with Barstool Sports’ readers.

That was a direct and deliberate contrast to the ascendance of political correctness.

The current Congress is the most diverse in U.S. history, and American women have won more attention for sexual harassment issues in the years following the birth of the #MeToo movement. But Barstool Sports has found a base hungry for its politically incorrect content — all the while also creating a steady stream of controversy.

I’m not sure how I feel on this article. It gets into the bones of what Barstool is doing, but seems way too focused on it as a branding and active PR strategy, while burying the lede about its effects, and how its attempt to play victim of ‘ascendant’ PC Culture is literally just wrapping itself around what is already the dominant culture while stomping on those who are actually trying to make ground. And only gives sparing details it feels like about how unethical the whole skeezy operation is especially when it comes to Portnoy.

On the California emissions case — if the car companies chose to ignore consumer sentiment and want to be more pollute-y and it goes to Court —

The Bush admin tried this too. The same thing will happen, in spite of Trump’s court packing.

District Court will take note that the Environmental Protection Act very specifically, overtly, within the text, declares that California has the absolute right to pass stricter emissions limits than the national standard. This is something Nixon insisted on, because physics and geography. There’s actual reasons why CA needs stricter limits than everyone else.

Trump admin will appeal. The Appellate Court will find for California, and take note that the actual specific legislation says, in so many words, that California is entitled to demand stricter limits than the national standard. It’s the law.

Trump admin will appeal that as well. When it gets to the Supremes, if they decide to take the case (in the GWB admin, there was an election and the case became moot, because the Obama EPA granted the waiver — so the Supremes never had to say) — even the wingiest of right wingers would have to turn themselves into pretzels to try to overturn this law that’s been in place for almost 50 years, there’s shitloads of documentation about the legislative intent behind that provision of the law. • Exercise tracker
• Telling time
• Reading and dictating texts and email when my phone isn’t readily available
• Making and catching phone callsl when my phone isn’t readily available
• Dismissing scam phone calls when my phone isn’t readily available
• Checking the temp and weather real quickly when my phone isn’t readily available
• Setting reminders and appointments when my phone isn’t readily available
• Doing quick factoid checks (sports scores, measurement conversions, how tall a certain celebrity is, etc.)
• Getting directions when my phone isn’t readily available

LOL, sensing a theme?

I will straight up admit it’s a luxury item, and most people don’t need this level of geekery. I have found it really useful, though. Again, one big thing for me is that if my phone is buried in my pocket or in another room in the house, I can still do stuff like dismiss scam calls or send a quick text right then and there on my wrist.

Now if Siri would only work consistently…

I bought a smart watch and used it for a couple weeks. I kept forgetting to charge the damn thing. Then I got one of these for like $35 and it does everything I need and the battery is good for more than 2 weeks at a time. I can get all my notifications and can see who is calling and decline phone calls but it really isn’t an input device so you can’t make calls or compose texts on it, which for me is fine, not something I was looking for. The fitness features are quite good also, and it is waterproof. Ordered a couple replacement bands for it because I am not a fan of the silicone band it came with.

The majority of hunting rifles are based on the bolt action military rifles of WWI so yes they are. That said, 5 rounds in a bolt action is much less efficient at it than an AR/AK design.

All guns CAN kill people. But weapons of war are made to kill many people in a short period of time while having enough ammo to handle possibly many waves. Hunting rifles, shotguns and such really don’t fulfill what you would predominantly need in war situation. Sure they could be used, but an assault weapon is far more practical in a ground war assult.

Deer rifle, one shot off at the animal maybe 2. If you didn’t hit it the deer it will not be firing back at you or even if you did hit it there will not be 4 more deer charging at you to do you harm. I think here in PA you can only have 3 shells in your rifle at any one time when deer hunting. And shotguns are not real effective once you get over 50 or so yards away (same with most pistols). So not effective other than in close, urban settings if used in war. Plus shotgun and a lot of shells is quite a load to carry around.
