Playing for Change: “The Weight,” Featuring Robbie Robertson, Ringo Starr and an Amazing Assortment of Musicians From All Over the World [VIDEO]

After another day in which the bad craziness escalated to yet another level, here’s something that might restore some balance to your world. It did to mine.

All the musicians in this are incredible, but I just want to point out that Ringo, who is often dragged for not being a great drummer, and certainly could never sight read The Black Page, lays down a beautiful fat groove here that never stops.

We’re excited to share our newest Song Around The World, “The Weight,” featuring musicians performing together across 5 continents. Great songs can travel everywhere bridging what divides us and inspiring us to see how easily we all get along when the music plays. Special thanks to our partner Cambria® for helping to make this possible and to Robbie Robertson, Ringo Starr and all the musicians for joining us in celebrating 50 years of this classic song.

Take a load off and turn it up!!

Dedicated To “The Band”:

Playing For Change is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. Our primary focus is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos we call Songs Around the World. Creating these videos motivated us to form the Playing For Change Band—a tangible, traveling representation of our mission, featuring musicians met along our journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation—a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world. Through these efforts, we aim to create hope and inspiration for the future of our planet. Learn more: http://playingforchange.com

I’ve read somewhere that while people rag on Ringo, the Beatles wouldn’t have been THE Beatles if he hadn’t been in the band.

At 600 PM MDT (0000 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Lorena was located
near latitude 23.6 North, longitude 109.5 West. Lorena is now
moving toward the northwest at about 5 mph (8 km/h). On the
forecast track, the core of the hurricane should move over or near
the Baja California peninsula during the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher
gusts. Some weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours if Lorena
moves inland. If the hurricane moves over the Gulf of California,
it could strengthen instead.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 10 miles (20 km) from
the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45
miles (75 km).

The estimated central pressure is 986 mb (29.12 inches).

LOL, that’s not controversial at all!

I forget where I was the other day bit Ringo was on the radio and the owner of the store said “Ringo is under-rated”, I said “all of them are under-rated”….lol I think I ended up walking out of there with free stuff…..

As Charles Pierce would say, here we go back to Mena Airport again. Here we go with a press that cannot abide a Democrat going through an election cycle unscathed, a press that simply must dig for any “dirt” because Zod forbid they be accused of “bias” for not doing so. So some luckless bastard(s) will be sent to Ukraine to bother the locals and dig through dumpsters for the least bit of “dirt” to spin into years of stories about the Bidens and “corruption.”

Meet the Trump era Dream Machines. The once happy-go-lucky queer-fronted L.A. band have re-emerged a little angrier in 2019, infusing their still-euphoric dance-soul-pop with an anti-nationalist message.

“We wanted to write a political song,” says frontman Harry May-Kline of “Sarajevo,” the first single off Dream Machines’ upcoming EP Trust/Desire, due later this fall.

The track may express Kline’s anxiety about the current state of the world, but bandmate and producer Luke Burba insists it’s still indicative of the high-energy sound the band does best. For proof, just check out this exclusive live video, filmed at L.A.’s iconic Troubadour recently.

The columnist in question is Max Boot

‘Impeachment time’: Conservative columnist says Pelosi must end her caution if Trump-Ukraine scandal is true (Raw Story)

Conservative columnist Max Boot, like fellow anti-Trump conservative Rick Wilson, had long supported House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) cautious approach when it comes to impeaching President Donald Trump.

But in his latest column, Boot argues that Pelosi cannot simply ignore the latest Trump scandal that involves allegedly strong-arming the Ukrainian government to help him dig up dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden.

“If the new scandal involving President Trump and Ukraine is as bad as it seems — and that is, of course, a very big if at this early stage — the House will have no choice but to impeach, consequences be damned,” he writes.

Lubbock:

UPS truck fully involved on South Loop between University and Indiana Avenue

The call came in just before 10:00 a.m., and Lubbock Police were on scene assisting.

No injuries have been reported. The main lanes of South Loop 289 were blocked for a time. Later, emergency crews re-opened one of the main lanes.

Drivers were urged to avoid the area and drive with caution.

A reporter on scene said the UPS driver smelled something weird, and pulled over. The driver saw that something among the packages in the back of the truck was on fire.

JM Ashby: Trump Says He’ll Release ISIS to Own the Libs

bobcesca.com

It’s so obvious it almost feels like a cliche to say it, but seriously — can even imagine the response if President Obama said something like this?

Fox News would already be accusing Obama of being a member of ISIS.

I don’t believe Trump actually will release ISIS prisoners into the wild because neighboring countries would definitely have something to say about that, but the American President is saying he will and that alone is truly insane.

Nope. Media outlets are run by-and-large by conservatives and corporations. I am not surprised at all.

Just like the complaints of regulatory capture, I have long complained of media capture.

It’s why outlets like NPR put on people for the Center for Immigration Studies and don’t identify them as one of John Tanton’s hate groups. It’s why Maggie Habberman is still the Trump whisperer at the New York Times (and that paper still hasn’t apologised for endorsing Hitler).

There’s Only One Way to End Gridlock in Washington
by Nancy LeTourneau, Washington Monthly

Mitch McConnell doesn’t care how clever you are or how you frame your message on climate change or any other issue. If we haven’t learned this already, we should know it by now: no matter how strongly the American people disagree with him, McConnell isn’t going to change his mind. In order to maintain power as his party slides into a minority, he’s willing to throw democracy under the bus by breaking the Senate, suppressing the vote, gerrymandering congressional districts, and packing the courts with extremists. That is the political reality we are dealing with right now.

As [Sen.] Schatz said, the only way to make any headway on climate change, or any other issue, is for Democrats to beat Republicans in 2020. He goes on to say that the way to do that is to ensure that all of the young people who are climate activists also become climate voters. We could say the same thing about other issues like gun violence, health care, or immigration. While activism continues beyond an election, it will accomplish nothing if we allow Republicans to maintain gridlock.

Meghan McCain Stormed Off of The View After a Confusing Rant About Julian Assange (with video)

During Friday’s taping of The View, Meghan McCain (of the Do You Know Who My Father Is McCains) stormed off stage after guest Ana Navarro asked her to please stop yelling at everyone.

The panel was discussing the news that a whistleblower filed a complaint regarding Donald Trump’s conversation with Ukraine when McCain abruptly changed the subject to talk about Wikileaks’ Julian Assange and a heated on-air argument she recently had with Pamela Anderson over the matter. McCain says that there are “a lot of liberals who are okay with Julian Assange releasing Hillary’s emails” but who are “screaming bloody murder right now about this whistleblower.”

Now, there are definitely a lot of people who identify as liberal or progressive who are very pro-Assange. They in no way represent the general views of liberalism, and it’s pretty ignorant to lump all liberals in together as loving Assange. McCain of all people should take some care with making blanket statements like this, as she really hates it when people lump her in with the worst homophobic, transphobic, generally bigoted conservatives out there-by which I mean her husband.

On today’s Climate Strike even Wyoming media is reporting on it (though apparently nothing happened in Wyoming today), but media here has a news blackout on it.

wyomingnewsnow.tv (KGWN television, Cheyenne, with photos)

NEW YORK (AP) — Young people afraid for their futures protested around the globe Friday to implore leaders to tackle climate change, turning out by the hundreds of thousands to insist that the warming world can’t wait any longer.

Marches, rallies and demonstrations were held from Canberra to Kabul and Cape Town to New York. More than 100,000 turned out in Berlin.

Days before a U.N. climate summit of world leaders, the “Global Climate Strike” events were as small as two dozen activists in Seoul using LED flashlights to send Morse code messages and as large as mass demonstrations in Australia that organizers estimated were the country’s largest since the Iraq War began in 2003.

From the WaPo comment section on George Conway/Neal Katyal’s OpEd:

MC4IY

There are several benefits to impeachment that have literally nothing to do with whether Republicans in the Senate ultimately convict. One more time, for the cheap seats in the back:

1. The impeachment inquiry and public hearings associated therewith GRAB THE MIC from Republicans. It lets US control the narrative for once. Republicans have been blasting lies and distortions from a loudspeaker for years, while we’ve been whispering the truth in 450 page PDF documents no one reads. An impeachment inquiry in the House changes that.

2. It informs the VOTING PUBLIC before the next election.

3. Public hearings labeled “impeachment” get viewers. Lots of them. From both sides of the political spectrum. And a live public hearing has the advantage of not being filtered through right wing propaganda. It will likely be the only time Trump supporters have heard anything resembling reality.

4. It forces Republicans to go on record as aiders and abetters of Trump’s corruption and criminality AFTER it is aired to the public in lurid detail. If you think that will help them, you’re a fool.

5. It at least puts an asterisk by the most corrupt and criminal president in American history. At least history will record that we were not ok with this. That’s the least we owe future generations.

And for everyone about to say, “but Trump will just yell that he was exonerated when the Senate doesn’t convict,” let me stop you right there.

HE IS ALREADY DOING THAT! And if we don’t impeach, he gets an argument just as strong, if not stronger. He gets to say that even DEMOCRATS are ok with everything he’s doing.

“If I had really done anything wrong, don’t you think those angry Democrats in the House would have impeached me?!?!?”

An impeachment inquiry must begin now, in earnest, in public—-with passion, zeal, and moral clarity

“You’ll get the Republicans to do nothing. They’re going to do nothing. They will be entirely complicit and die on this Orange, corrupt hill,” he said.

“The question is for the Democrats, ‘How low will Trump have to go for you to impeach him?’ That’s a question that should be asked of all Democrats who are on the fence. ‘What will be impeachable for you?’ What will get you to vote formally to impeach this man?’” he asked. “Who, by the way, agrees with Vladimir Putin, throws his own intelligence under the bus and says Russia is fake news story — even though it isn’t — and now is asking the Ukrainian president to interfere in the upcoming 2020 elections.”

From the Nebraska Democratic Party, who said it:

Let’s play a little game.

As you probably heard, venerable NPR political correspondent Cokie Roberts died this week from complications due to breast cancer.
Following are several quotes from past and present politicians on Roberts’ passing.

1. She was “a role model to young women at a time when the profession was still dominated by men; a constant over forty years of a shifting media landscape and changing world, informing voters about the issues of our time and mentoring young journalists every step of the way.”

2. Roberts was “A pioneer. Relentless in her pursuit of the truth and steadfast in her commitment to breaking down barriers for women in journalism—our country is better because of it.”

3. She was “a talented, tough, and fair reporter. We respected her drive and appreciated her humor. She became a friend.”

4. “I never met her. She never treated me nicely. But I would like to wish her family well. She was a professional, and I respect professionals. Never treated me well, but I certainly respect her as a professional.”

So here we go: No.1 was from former President Barack Obama; No. 2 came from former Vice President Joe Biden; No. 3 was from former President George W. Bush; and No. 4 was from (WAIT FOR IT) President Trump.
Nothing but class — at least from three of them.

Beto destroyed any chance of getting on the ticket or getting elected statewide in Texas because of his gun confiscation stand. If Biden or Warren put him on their ticket the NRA would go nuclear. I believe the best match with Biden would be Stacy Abrams and the best match with Warren would be Sherrod Brown

Personally I’d prefer Sen. Brown to stay in the Senate. We need every seat there, and Sen. Warren would be leaving if she won. Sen. Brown is hanging on over Ohio’s wingnuts.

On the other hand, I could see a Warren ticket with Jay Inslee (or for that matter, most of the candidates).

If that’s the case, no Democrat can be the vice presidential nominee. Contrary to what a lot of people think, a majority of Texans support gun control, and a near majority wouldn’t have any problem with eliminating AR-15s or moving them to gun ranges.

The estimated central pressure is 986 mb (29.12 inches).

nhc.noaa.gov

I guess Lorena is going to be the late-season hurricane that breaks up the hot summer weather here in Arizona early next week. Why, we might have days where we don’t top 90 and there are serious chances of rain! I can’t wait for the return of weather that we live through summer for. :)

I don’t know if y’all saw this, but I am completely gobsmacked that the Trump Admin actually got something right for once.

The Aussie Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, is visiting the US and of course he’s Trump’s guest. Well, Morrison wanted to bring along his mentor, Brian Houston, the lead pastor of the Hillsong megachurch (with several outlets here in the Phoenix area). *However*, someone in the White House either let their fingers do the walking or knew that Houston was unacceptable in one particular way.

Even though Brian Houston would have fit in very well with Trump’s court evangelicals, the dude is highly radioactive because he covered up his preacher father’s sexual abuse of children. The WSJ article quoted doesn’t even tell the half of it. So someone over at State was doing their job for once.

As some models predicted several days ago, in the East Pacific we now have tropical storms which are making duos, interacting (Fujiwara effect):

Alas, they won’t bring any rain here, but will pump a lot of moisture into the mid-levels that will affect the central part of the US.

The value of thoughts and prayers (goes to The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a study from a woman at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, and a woman from Dennison University):

A standard response of both policy makers and private citizens to hardships—from natural disasters to mass shootings—is to offer “thoughts and prayers.” Critics argue that such gestures are meaningless and may obstruct structural reforms intended to mitigate catastrophes. In this study, we elicit the value of receiving thoughts and prayers from strangers following adversity. We find that Christians value thoughts and prayers from religious strangers and priests, while atheists and agnostics are “prayer averse”—willing to pay to avoid receiving prayers. Furthermore, while indifferent to receiving thoughts from other secular people, they negatively value thoughts from Christians.

When they “pay,” they mean pay actual cash money.

The authors devised a study launched right after Hurricane Florence struck North Carolina of Christians and atheists.

They explain how they arrived at their conclusion that the “average” atheist would pay a Christian $1.51 to leave them out of their prayers.

Christians valued most a prayer from a priest (regardless of whether the person was Catholic, Protestant, &c) and would be willing to pay over $7 to receive a prayer from him in a crisis. They valued prayers from religious people more than thoughts.

Atheists would pay to avoid thoughts and prayers (implicitly preferring actions).

The city of New York has decided to dump an ordinance which bans conversion therapy, not because they wanted to, but to avoid a lawsuit by the mendacious “Alliance Defending Freedom.”

So Kris Vallotton, a pastor at Bethel Church Redding and head of the Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry (aka “Christian Hogwarts”) was all happy about that. I follow Kris just to keep an eye on shit like this, since Bethel’s trying to take over Redding, CA in the same style as Scientology attempted to take over Clearwater, FL and I tossed off a comment.

I let Kris know how I feel:

While Kris Vallotton won’t admit that he believes asexual people are defective, one of his followers told me there were only two genders and sexualities. I noted that was biologically incoherent as it ignores the existence of intersex people.

I know it’s a waste of time to deal with these people, but I want to drag them out into the light and get them to admit that they even think those of us who don’t have much, if any, sex drive are just as sinful in their eyes as the rest of the LGBTQ people.

As in fear of Christians? You mean those folks who threaten to abuse gay people if they don’t change their sexual spots? Who blow up abortion clinics and harass women? Who rail against education as evil? Those people who threaten to kill your wife and baby son? Who claim other Christians are not “true” and would round them up right after the atheists if they had the power to do it?

Phobias are irrational fears. There ain’t nothin’ irrational about fearing one of the most blood-soaked religions in the history of humankind.

No, as in fear of Jesus. What I haven’t told this guy, what I want to tell this guy, is that I think about Jesus more than I think about my sexuality. Except for the last 24 hours. I’ve spent more time thinking about my sexuality today than I have in a very long time.

This particular church is at the epicenter of bringing back conversion therapy and #oncegay and so on and so forth. I’m trying to get them pinned down on asexuality, but so far, they’ve refused to answer. For the record, I don’t consider myself defective, I just see being asexual as part of being who I am. I suspect being asexual is somehow linked to being on the autism spectrum, but, dammit, I’m NOT DEFECTIVE. And I certainly don’t need to be converted or changed!

You’re certainly not defective.

I would imagine you’ll also get the occasional “you haven’t met the right guy” statement from other Christians as well. (Come to the dark side (:: we have cookies and don’t give a flip about people’s sexuality or gender.)

My wife just mentioned to me when I read that Twitter string to her she constantly got “what church do you go to/are you a Christian”/veiled threats of hell when she worked for Digital Equipment Corporation (at work).

When she applied for work at Raytheon she was told it was a “Christian company” and knew people fired from that company for not being Christians.

And this is one reason I stay at the evil too big to fail bank. Because religion just doesn’t enter into it here. Heck, we lost Focus on the Fetus Family as a customer when we gobbled up a Colorado bank over a decade ago. They were all upset that the bank, as a corporate entity, supported LGBTQ causes. The bank’s position is that LGBTQ money is just as green as anyone else’s money and “don’t let the door hit you in the azz as you’re leaving.”

I know there are conservative church people who work at the bank, like the new manager who moved in from Alabama. But he surprised me today when he asked if I thought we should have a woman president. Knowing he’s conservative, I was being cagey before I said, “I’d like there to be a woman president before I die.” He slapped his knee and said, “that’s right! The only time my epilepsy drugs were ever late were two: When I lived in Oklahoma and the VA for some moronic reason decided to use UPS. The drugs arrived at the distribution centre on the same day our town was hit by a tornado. They never found the box.

The other time is any time I go on a trip longer than the thirty days of medication they will give me. It’s like pulling teeth to get an extension, as if I was dipping into someone’s personal stash of barbiturates.

2 Pro-Choice Abortion Bills Take Effect In Maine (Yahoo!)

Two bills aimed at expanding abortion access in Maine take effect Thursday, a day after anti-abortion activists announced they fell short of getting enough signatures to continue their effort to repeal the measures.

Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) signed the two bills in June. One requires that all insurance plans in the state covering prenatal care also cover abortion care. The other overturns a ban on qualified nurse practitioners and other advanced practice clinicians providing abortion care.

“While anti-choice politicians around the nation are passing laws to chip away at our rights, Maine is moving forward toward a more just and equitable state,” said Alison Beyea, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Maine branch. She was referring to the more than half a dozen states that have passed strict anti-abortion legislation in recent months.

California High School Principal Threatens Students Right to Protest (goes to the American Humanist Association)

(Washington, D.C., September 18, 2019) - Attorneys at the American Humanist Association warned administrators at Mira Costa High School this morning against the unconstitutional behavior of discouraging students from protesting the Pledge of Allegiance.

On September 11, 2019, the principal of the Manhattan Beach Unified School District high school announced via the intercom that he was “personally offended by any teacher or student who did not stand for the Pledge.” The principal has also canvassed the school in an effort to discern if anyone was not standing for the daily ritual.

As the warning letter states, any attempts by the school district or administrators to infringe on students’ rights to refuse to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance “would be actionable as a serious constitutional violation.”

AHA sent a letter to the school after receiving a complaint from a teacher in the school. The AHA link has a copy of the letter sent, demanding a response from the school administration within a week.

The question of the Pledge of Allegiance was settled in 1943 in a case of Jehovah’s Witnesses against a school district in West Virginia.

This is a clear attempt at enforced speech.

Though not related to Brexit, it looks like Thomas Cook, Britain’s oldest travel company (178 years old, through various iterations) is on the brink of bankruptcy, which could force the British government to do the largest peacetime repatriation in its history.

The government and the aviation watchdog are drawing up plans for the biggest ever UK peacetime repatriation if Thomas Cook collapses, with 150,000 British customers currently on holidays overseas with the travel company.

Thomas Cook is holding last-minute talks to stave off a bankruptcy that could happen as soon as this weekend unless it secures £200m in extra funding.

The Department for Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have made initial preparations to bring stranded passengers back to the UK, under a plan known as Operation Matterhorn.

Britain’s oldest package holiday company has held emergency talks to sell its Nordic airline and tour operating divisions in an attempt to raise money.

I forgot to add that in addition to the 150,000-odd Brits who may be potentially stranded in the event of a Thomas Cook bankruptcy (it’s looking increasingly likely, as a government bailout probably isn’t gonna happen) there’s an additional 200,000+ who’ve already booked holidays with Thomas Cook - and they’re now wondering if they’re going to get their money refunded.

That’s not to mention the roughly 20,000 jobs that might well disappear like a fart in the wind by tomorrow.

Some of it seems tangentially related to Brexit as bookings dropped because of Brexit travel uncertainty. So while it’s not directly related to Brexit (the company’s been struggling for years, apparently) you could probably chalk some of it up to Brexit-related collateral damage.

Partially, yes, but Thomas Cook also has a crushing mountain of debt, £1.6 billion worth. And competition, particularly online competition, has been eating them alive for about a decade or so.

Brexit was just the cherry on top of the shitcake.

The Guardian article notes:

Around 600,000 customers in total are abroad with Thomas Cook - which has significant operations in mainland Europe - including around 300,000 Germans and tens of thousands of Scandinavians.

Is anyone asking if the German government is going to repatriate 300K Germans? I can’t seem to find anything in English on the situation.

Not typical weather for this area

I don’t know what normal is here in NH. We’ve lived here about 6 years and it’s been a bit different weather each year. Right now we’re having cool nights and hot days, so the tree colors should be really vibrant.

So Ken Vogel is setting the stage for another epic “both sides” battle over Trump’s Ukraine crime by focusing on Hunter Biden.

Facts that Vogel has previously reported that apparently don’t matter anymore:

1. The “investigation” of the company that Hunter Biden worked for had closed 2 years before Joe Biden said anything whatsoever, to anyone, about that prosecutor.

2. Joe wanted the prosecutor fired because HE WASN’T DOING HIS JOB. He wasn’t vigorously investigating and prosecuting corruption. He was mostly ignoring it. It wasn’t just Joe-for-the-US who wanted him fired for that and made a big public fuss — it was also Interpol, Europol, and the IMF.

3. Because the guy ultimately was fired, and replaced by someone who did do their job, that’s how/why Paul Manafort’s misdeeds (and the evidence proving it) came to light. THIS IS THE PART THAT TRUMP IS REALLY PISSED OFF ABOUT.

When the news broke Sept. 10 that a lawsuit had been filed against NFL star receiver Antonio Brown accusing him of rape, Barstool Sports, like many other websites, published an article about it. But it was the comments on that article that told the real story.

Two comments alone — “I hate this guy but I think this is all BS and some chick is trying to get paid” and “Most obvious extortion attempt I’ve ever seen” — racked up hundreds of “likes” on the sports and culture blog geared toward young men. A majority of replies to the article on Twitter elicited jokes about rape or crude remarks and captured a perspective popular with Barstool Sports’ readers.

That was a direct and deliberate contrast to the ascendance of political correctness.

The current Congress is the most diverse in U.S. history, and American women have won more attention for sexual harassment issues in the years following the birth of the #MeToo movement. But Barstool Sports has found a base hungry for its politically incorrect content — all the while also creating a steady stream of controversy.

I’m not sure how I feel on this article. It gets into the bones of what Barstool is doing, but seems way too focused on it as a branding and active PR strategy, while burying the lede about its effects, and how its attempt to play victim of ‘ascendant’ PC Culture is literally just wrapping itself around what is already the dominant culture while stomping on those who are actually trying to make ground. And only gives sparing details it feels like about how unethical the whole skeezy operation is especially when it comes to Portnoy.

That said, despite their malfeasance, the NYT is one of the few publications with the resources and the history of doing in-depth investigations. We do need them but they also need some self-reflection and rethinking of their obligations to the public.

On the California emissions case — if the car companies chose to ignore consumer sentiment and want to be more pollute-y and it goes to Court —

The Bush admin tried this too. The same thing will happen, in spite of Trump’s court packing.

District Court will take note that the Environmental Protection Act very specifically, overtly, within the text, declares that California has the absolute right to pass stricter emissions limits than the national standard. This is something Nixon insisted on, because physics and geography. There’s actual reasons why CA needs stricter limits than everyone else.

Trump admin will appeal. The Appellate Court will find for California, and take note that the actual specific legislation says, in so many words, that California is entitled to demand stricter limits than the national standard. It’s the law.

Trump admin will appeal that as well. When it gets to the Supremes, if they decide to take the case (in the GWB admin, there was an election and the case became moot, because the Obama EPA granted the waiver — so the Supremes never had to say) — even the wingiest of right wingers would have to turn themselves into pretzels to try to overturn this law that’s been in place for almost 50 years, there’s shitloads of documentation about the legislative intent behind that provision of the law. California must have stricter emissions limits than everybody else because PHYSICS. Because GEOGRAPHY.

Isn’t this the continued problem that Democrats face? The MSM is afflicted with a toxic blend of both-siderism in which if the GOP does something bad, it has to be balanced by some attack against the Dems; but the converse is never true.

Last night, Bill Maher pointed that over hundred papers called for Clinton’s resignation in the wake of the “Monica” charges — but here, where there is widespread blatant disregard for the law, there isn’t a peep of this nature from the press. Of course, one factor may be consideration of the next in line: Gore would have been a perfectly satisfactory President if Clnton had stepped down, while Pence would be another nightmare.

• Dismissing scam phone calls when my phone isn’t readily available
• Checking the temp and weather real quickly when my phone isn’t readily available
• Setting reminders and appointments when my phone isn’t readily available
• Doing quick factoid checks (sports scores, measurement conversions, how tall a certain celebrity is, etc.)
• Getting directions when my phone isn’t readily available

LOL, sensing a theme?

I will straight up admit it’s a luxury item, and most people don’t need this level of geekery. I have found it really useful, though. Again, one big thing for me is that if my phone is buried in my pocket or in another room in the house, I can still do stuff like dismiss scam calls or send a quick text right then and there on my wrist.

Now if Siri would only work consistently…

But then there’s that camera setup on the new iPhone 11 Pro.

re: #179 Hecuba’s daughter

And my RW brother reminds us that Lincoln was a Republican and the Republicans supported women’s suffrage. He is the perfect mark for Dinesh: the parties are exactly where they were a century ago — no changes.

Republicans used to be the liberal party, this is a true thing.
Democrats used to be the conservative party, this is a true thing.

The essence of conservatism — everywhere, always — is attachment to the status quo. Conservatives like what they’re used to. They want tomorrow to be just like yesterday and today.

At the time of the American Revolution, or the abolitionist movement, or women’s suffrage, or civil rights, or just about anything else… the conservative position has always always been “let’s not change anything. let’s just keep it as is.”

The only conservatives who ever supported any of those things were decades after the fact, once they were used to it, because it was the new status quo.

Republicans used to be the liberal party.
Democrats used to be the conservative party.

Starting in the 1960’s, and continuing for the next several decades… whatever liberals were still in the Republican party became Democrats. Whatever conservatives were still in the Democratic party became Republican.

Dinesh and his fans would prefer you not notice that it was always, and still is, Liberals who supported these things and Conservatives who opposed them.

I haven’t really been interested in the watch until Series 4. While pretty basic, it has a sensor that allows it to record an ECG. Since my health scare in June, I’ve been wanting a watch just for this feature alone.

The essence of conservatism — everywhere, always — is attachment to the status quo. Conservatives like what they’re used to. They want tomorrow to be just like yesterday and today.

Conservatives want to revert to the status quo of the 1950’s, at least for social issues. Choice has been the law since the 1970’s so status quo would be to retain legalized abortion. Conservatives pick some idealized time in the past and want to return there.

Remember that after the Civil War, no Southern politician could expect to be elected as a Republican, so they formed the Southern Wing of the Democratic Party. It was Nixon and Lee Atwater who started winning those people back into the GOP fold, and Reagan who completed the task.

I bought a smart watch and used it for a couple weeks. I kept forgetting to charge the damn thing. Then I got one of these for like $35 and it does everything I need and the battery is good for more than 2 weeks at a time. I can get all my notifications and can see who is calling and decline phone calls but it really isn’t an input device so you can’t make calls or compose texts on it, which for me is fine, not something I was looking for. The fitness features are quite good also, and it is waterproof. Ordered a couple replacement bands for it because I am not a fan of the silicone band it came with.

Motherfucker comes gliding down his escalator to start blaming non-white people for America’s problems, and these mouth breathers are like “Just hook it into my veins.”

I mentioned the other day at my job there’s a guy I work really well with, but he’s a MAGAt; reads Ann Coulter and has a meme on his wall that Trump is a secret hero of 9/11 because the “liberal” media is hiding the story.

The guy is really smart, but goddamn; I keep trying to figure out what went haywire in his life that he looks at Trump as being worthy of the same office Lincoln and FDR held.

And I keep coming back to the one thing that pretty much unites conservatives/Republicans/MAGAts together.

Dude is a card carrying NRA member (I’m working on it. His dad was a member for years until he figured out late in life what the NRA had become. So there’s hope.) and even he agrees with this basic point. If the weapon is designed solely to kill people, then that weapon should not be in the hands of a civilian. He’s still got that deep seated paranoia that any anti gun legislation will lead to the banning of guns, though.

261
Eventual Carrion  Sep 21, 2019 • 2:39:12pm

re: #252 Eclectic Cyborg

Aren’t most guns designed to kill people?

All guns CAN kill people. But weapons of war are made to kill many people in a short period of time while having enough ammo to handle possibly many waves. Hunting rifles, shotguns and such really don’t fulfill what you would predominantly need in war situation. Sure they could be used, but an assault weapon is far more practical in a ground war assult.

Deer rifle, one shot off at the animal maybe 2. If you didn’t hit it the deer it will not be firing back at you or even if you did hit it there will not be 4 more deer charging at you to do you harm. I think here in PA you can only have 3 shells in your rifle at any one time when deer hunting. And shotguns are not real effective once you get over 50 or so yards away (same with most pistols). So not effective other than in close, urban settings if used in war. Plus shotgun and a lot of shells is quite a load to carry around.
